Week 7 [26.11-02.12.18] Why videos go viral

How often do you watch YouTube? Have you ever experienced the situation when you watching a tutorial but twenty minutes later you catch yourself watching some cat videos?
Kevin Allocca is working at YouTube and watching  videos is the part of his official duties. In this TED Talk he shares with us his observations of how videos become viral and what is the key to make your video viral.

1. Do you follow or check regularly tastemakers like Jimmy Kimmel? Which ones?
2. Have you ever tried to film videos for YouTube or any other video platforms? If yes what was your experience? If not would you like to try?
3. Share your favourite viral video :)

Comments

I watch you tube quite often, and I can tell one thing: its algorithms suck. Like really, I spend about an hour a day watching some programming tutorials and sometimes check out latest content on the channels I am subscribed to. And guess what, YouTube instead of my preferences suggest to watch some videos because they are super popular (no, Dua Lipa, I will not listen your songs!), and... Fills up suggested list with videos I have already watched. Cool. So, to the "Have you ever experienced the situation when you watching a tutorial but twenty minutes later you catch yourself watching some cat videos?" -- the answer is No. I have not. For in order to watch a certain video I have to google it.

I know, right?! I've never watched Polish YouTubers, not once, but YouTube keeps filling up my suggested list with their channels. I even tried to click "I'm non interested" but it doesn't change anything. Arrrrgh!

I don't really follow any tastemakers on any socialmedia. All virad video I saw were sended to me by my friends or I just came upon them when watching something else.

I didn't make any youtube video or something but I would love to try I to be honest I wanted to start my own youtube channel and post everyday videos related to motorcycles and previously games of course ;p.

My favourite viral video would be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRv7G7WpOoU
because it involves my favourite youtuber and snowboard.

I have never heard of Jimmy Kimmel and I don't watch this kind of videos so often. I used to watch a lot of vlogs on YouTube but now I simply have no time for it so I watch them rarely.
I film a lot. I love documenting my life to see in the future how much has changed and how it was. I haven't posted any video to YouTube except one tutorial when I was 14. I don't know why but I have kind of barrier to put stuff on youtube. I was thinking a few times about vlogging but I didn't post anything.
My favorite viral video comes from Casey Neistat, a popular YouTuber that makes good content. You can find a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRv7G7WpOoU . I like this video because of the work that has been put on it and the Christmas atmosphere which is awesome.

No, I don't watch his late night shows and I'm not into his video format, to be honest.
No, I haven't tried to film videos and then post them on Youtube. I think making Youtube videos like hobby is not for everybody. There are too many "wannabe youtuber" people who think that it is a very easy way to get fame and become rich, but as it was mentioned in the comment above Youtube algorithms work a little bit strange. As far as I know if you want to stay relevant on platform then you should post videos almost every day and keep them 10 minutes long at a minimum. Not everybody can just sit and record videos for a whole day straight just to keep yourself "searchable" on Youtube.
I don't have any favorite viral videos although this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCgymPq-b2U) is pretty good although it's probably staged and fake.
Anna Moskalenko said…
So why haven't you tried yet? I think, it could be really fun :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
But what causes this kind of barrier? Bullying on the internet or something else?
Anna Moskalenko said…
Haha, I really hope it's fake because otherwise it's a very big fail. Or some marketing trick, who knows?

I am afraid I don’t follow any tastemakers and I don’t even know who Jimmy Kimmel. This is mostly because I don’t find people interesting and I not into spending hours on social media.
I have never tried to film videos for YouTube. I am an introvert and I don’t have any drive to share anything with other people. What is more, I am not interested in creating movies or photography.
One of the viral movies I have seen was about cat Maru. I don’t remember how i have found it, but as i know it is quite popular, it has 15 million views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XID_W4neJo

No, I do not follow the authors of the video. Most often I see such videos in already grouped cuts for 20 minutes. And I do not have bloggers whom I would watch regularly.
I may have shot such videos, but only on my phone. I never put anything on the Internet. I guess I'm just not looking for fame :)
This video scored almost 6 million views, but it seems to me that I heard this song and saw a lot of parodies that for me this video became really viral.

For me Dame Tu Cosita was one of the most irritating ones, and I agree, it was everywhere.

I don't follow or regularly check any tastemakers. I decided to drop social media at the begging of this year and started working on making my own dream come true. I check if from time to time to find new ideas on what I can do though.

Yes, I had a few attempts to recording videos on Youtube. There weren't successful, I mean they don't have many views even now, but I was fun, so I don't regret it. Actually one of them has helped around 4k people with running the game, there used to be a print error in the cd key which was in the game box. I was looking for a solution for days, and when I finally found it, I decided to record a video saying how you can solve it. I've got many positive comments and upvotes, so decisions to make a video of that was really worth it!

I don't have any viral video I can think of I can share right now :(
VIral videos tend to be viral only for a short period and after that, we forget about them, so probably that's why I cannot think of any thighr now.

1. The only person that I check on regularly and that could be considered a tastemaker is PewDiePie. He is the most subscribed YouTuber so I guess that makes him tastemaker.

2. Nope, not interested either.

3. Well... This guy is a living legend...

He started his YouTube career with this video and he still does vocal covers to this day.

- No, do not follow or check any tastemakers because I do not like that kind of entertainment.
2. Have you ever tried to film videos for YouTube or any other video platforms? If yes what was your experience? If not would you like to try?
- I have tried to create a parody of an old cartoon called "Pat & Mat". It was quite funny especial the process of editing the video in Windows Movie Maker and waiting one day to download the video from the internet to only find out it was not the episode I was looking for.
3. Share your favourite viral video :)
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqEzI9rPvP4 it was one of the first videos from How To Basic I have ever seen and I like it a lot how this simple idea evolved through years.

Unfortunately, I do not follow regularly tastemakers, sometimes I look with curiosity about a topic if I am interested in.
Once, I used to stream on the Twitch platform, I saw the potential, but without regularity, I could not go any further in this direction, so I gave up. It's not for me. I liked contact with audience and I had lot of fun about it.
I came across this movie on 9gag few months ago and to this day I’m still amazed with the courage of this man, I can watch him over and over: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9zxPi93GsM

Jimmy Kimmel Show, Jimmy Fallon show, Gratham Norton Show is my favourite. I always watch these videos on youtube.

I have never tried to make my own video on youtube or another platform because I think that this is not mine. I like to watch some TV shows or music videos and it's enough for me.

Viral videos are useless. I always try do not watch them. But there is one music video that could be named viral from Russian band Little Big that I really like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDFBTdToRmw

No, I don't have time for checking tastemakers. If I have free time I like to spend it on reading books or chilling with my family, it's the best option for me. Hmm, I remember that I have created YouTube account when I was younger, probably at my primary school. I have uploaded some videos but nothing more. YouTube is normal profession and people have to spend full time on that. It's very hard to get subscriptions and followers so if you want to spend only part time of the day on your channel it's probably only waste of time because it's too little.
My best viral video? I don't prefer these movies but I remember: https://www.facebook.com/alcoiri/videos/10205433319331704/ (probably have to sign in). What do you think about that?

I have never heard of Jimmy Kimmel before, I just watch videos on YouTube in general at different types of topics, I love create videos so much, but I haven't posted any video to YouTube I'm just keeping it private. I didn't take any action about it but I'm thinking about it always, I haven't any favourite video in my mind now to share it with you.
I sometimes watch Jimmy Fallon videos because I find his interviews and show the funniest among all other American late night talk shows.

I have indeed uploaded a couple of videos to YouTube and one of them has even made it to 4.6 milion views. I like sharing and promoting comedy so I don’t have any problem with it. I find that experience exciting.

My favourite viral videos are basically „classic” ones from Polish YouTube, like „daj kamienia” or „jestem hardkorem”. I grew up with those and they have a sentimental value for me. :)

No. No, I am not.
The more time passes the more strange this kind of video are posted. It is not usually that fun but everyone is quoting or parodying it. That is why some of them become so popular.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
