Week 7 [26.11 - 2.12.18] Beating your weaknesses

Everyone has dreams. Also, there are a lot of obstacles to make your dream come true. Only a few people decide to follow their way, beat their weaknesses and fulfill their dreams.
One of those people was Leonid Teliga, the polish sailor.

Leonid Teliga

He lived during the Second World War and like every man during those times, served in the army. From his youth, his biggest dream was to become a sailor and travel around the world. In the army, he learned everything about sailing and passed an exam to become a skipper, which allowed him sail alone. When the war ended, he decided to build his own yacht. It is said that he sold his house to have funds to create his ship. At the end of his work, a lot of sailing institutions helped him finish the "Opty", that was the name of Leonid's yacht. However, mostly he built and funded his yacht by himself. Opty was a small, 10 meter long wooden ship, but well-equipped especially for those times.

A few words about the journey

From the beginning, he wanted to do that trip alone, only him and the yacht. When he got an opportunity to go, nothing could stop him. Before the cruise, he said that what he was afraid of the most were loneliness and lack of discipline. He had to be the captain, who gives orders and a deckhand who performs all the orders. Before his 50th birthday, he started his journey.
That amazing journey lasted for 2 years and 2 months! He had to face a lot of problems, not only fierce weather, but also issues with his health. He struggled with growing cancer, tough lumbago and many other sicknesses. His dream was to do this alone, not only because he wanted to go around the world but also overcome his weaknesses and become stronger than before.

Around the globe

After making a full circle he became the first Pole that went around the world on one yacht and also beat the record of non-breakable shipping alone. He made 13 260 miles in 165 days.
He finished his journey in April 1969.
After all, he said that this trip was the most amazing thing he did in his whole life. He became stronger, wiser and happier than he had ever wished,  but unfortunately, the cancer did not give up.

At the end

After his return to Poland, he went through an operation and his condition has improved for a while. Unfortunately, in the end cancer was too strong, and Teliga finally died a year after his incredible journey. What he has done, had a huge impact on every polish sailor. His strength, persistence and fortitude became main values to follow for all polish sailors. After all, he became an icon of sailing and the most important sailing reward in Poland was named in his honor.

I’ve never heard about him before. I admit him a lot and I’m sure that I wouldn’t do such a thing because of my physical and psychological barriers. He is some kind of hero and he must be a strong person. I’ve tried sailing and it’s good adventure for few days but as for me, after some time it turned out to be boring. I enjoyed it but I prefer motorboats or yachts with engines. I have some dreams. Maybe my dreams aren’t so great but I’d also like to visit many places. Generally as for now, school is the only thing stopping me from making dreams come true.
I have never heard of him before. But the whole topic of the sailing is what I was always keen on. Although I never sailed in an ocean, only at sea, I would like to do this one day. Not alone, though, on a cruise ship.
Thanks for your opinion! If you have never sail in the best weather, you won’t love it. But if you love it once, you will love it forever.
Are you going to follow your dream just after school end?
Are you going to go on a cruise soon? Or it’s just a dream that you would really love to do?

1.Have you heard about him before? What do you think about him and what he has done?
I’ve never heard about him before.I have never been interested in sailing, because I think it is a male occupation.

2.Have you ever tried sailing? Did you enjoy it? Or would you like to try it?
I haven't tried. I loved to swim, until the incident that happened to me last year at sea. When there were very big waves and they began to cover me, knock me down and tighten.

3.Do you have a dream like his? What stops you from making your dreams come true?
I want to go scuba diving on coral reefs. But I need to overcome the panic attack that starts when I don't touch the bottom with my feet.
I have never heard about him before, i'm not a fan of things that are close to sea, sailing. After reading your article, i would say that he did a good job and he travelled around the world, what made him famous nowadays. I have never tried sailing, but maybe, in 20 years, if i had nothing to do, i would try it, for sure. Almost every person have dreams, i'm doing everything right now to make my dream true.

I have never heard about Leonid Teliga before but what he did is awesome. He had a passion and a very risky plan but he did it which says a lot of him.
I have tried sailing once and I loved it. The silence and atmosphere on a boat were so awesome that I didn't want it to end. I don't think I'd go for a sailing trip around the globe, but I will definitely sail again.
I don't have this kind of dreams. My dream is to travel around the world and see awesome places with awesome views, and I do my best to make it happen.

No, I haven’t heard about him before. He was person with strong will power and person who can set himself a goal and follow it .
No, I never tried to sailing. Maybe in future but I’m not sure. I prefer paddle than sailing(for example on short canoe).
In my thought sailing is more complicated than paddle, on short boat it’s not a big deal to handle it , but handle the wind when sailing this is a real challenge.
No, I haven’t so big dreams. Now I have smaller dreams than Leonid had, but I making everything that I can to make it come true.
You will be really surprise how many women sail and how good they are, but for sure, there are more men. I’m really sorry for what happened to you and I believe that you can overcome your panic attacks and see those beautiful coral reefs.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. Are you afraid of water? Or you just don’t like anything that is connected to water?
Travelling is amazing and if you can connect it with sailing, it become even more awesome! What the most amazing place you have visited already?
Sailing is amazing, because you don’t need a lot of experience to do it. Recreational sailing is pretty simple and incredibly fulfilling.
Every dream is important and it should be our duty to make it come true, I believe you can too.
I have already heard his name before, but I did not know much about him. I think the most important is that he fulfilled his dream. In those years cancer would have killed him anyway due to the fact that medicine was not so developed, but at least he left this world as a man who reached his goal and becomes part of great history.
I have tried sailing while I was young, but I was incredibly terrified because I was not sure about my swimming skills and afraid of drowning. I don't think I have such dream which is comparable to the one described in the article, but I do have smaller ones like climbing Mont Blanc.

I've heard his name somewhere, but I must admit that I didn't know who was he. I think that his achievement is indeed impressive, considering the times that he lived in. He probably couldn't be so well equipped as all those sailors nowadays.
I sailed a bit, but on a really small boat and I haven't really enjoyed it. All those things with changing sides or ropes didn't seem to be too exciting for me. And the wind was so strong that it wasn't a pleasure for me. But that was just one time so I guess that I didn't get a full picture of sailing.
I don't have a dream like this, I think I couldn't stand solitude and all those obstacles. It would be just too stressful for me.

I unfortunately have not heard of such a brave man before. He can rightly be called a hero. I have never participated in sea voyages, especially in traveling on the ocean. But I think that in my life I need to try some of this. And I would rather not in extreme conditions, but with comfort on a cruise ship for example.

I have not heard about Teliga before, but I'm impressed with what he's done. Not everyone has the strength necessary to both follow and achieve one's dream.

Personally I've never tried sailing, and I don't particularly want to try it. I don't particularly enjoy traveling, and with my luck, I'd only get seasick if I tried sailing.

I don't really have any specific dream like his - all I really want is to live a relatively satisfied life, and I don't really care how I achieve this as long as I am happy. There's nothing really stopping me from achieving this - it's more of a long-term process that I constantly work on than a goal.

I have heard about Leon Tuliga, he is an amazing man who has done something unbelievable, and especially in such bad times without the technology that we have at this moment, I admire such people!
Unfortunately, I never sailed and I'm not in a hurry, I have many other hobbies and it does not belong to but I admire people who do it in the open seas and oceans!
Currently, I have a few other dreams and unfortunately as with dreams to meet them, I need money, although it is not impossible because money can always be somehow earned.

Unfortunately, I have never heard of him, but I must admit that I admire him, because I know how difficult it is. I was sailing on the Szczecin Lagoon with my grandfather and dad only for pleasure and it was very pleasant. Coming back we were caught by such a wind that we practically sailed sideways and it was both dangerous and attractive. I think that only I block myself from my dreams, but every day I try to make my dreams come true.

No, I've never heard about him before. I admire such people, his story is inspiring. Thank you for introducing him to me.

I've never tried sailing, but I would love to try. I know many people who are sailing. They spend every holiday on their boats. It must be great.

Since I finished my first marathon, I would love to finish all major marathons in the world (Tokyo, Boston, New York, London, Berlin, Chicago). What stops me? In order to take part in most of them, I need to qualify and it requires running marathons below 3 hours. Many years of training in front of me, before I will be able to realize my dream.
1. Have you heard about him before? What do you think about him and what he has done?
I haven't heard of him - amazing.

2. Have you ever tried sailing? Did you enjoy it? Or would you like to try it?
No, but I would like to try - I like to have holiday by the sea or by the lake, and I always liked to watch people sailing. I think it must be nice, because if You want to have control over the ship, You must do a lot of things manually, and it's the opposite of driving a modern car.

3. Do you have a dream like his? What stops you from making your dreams come true?
I don't have such a challenging dreams - and for now nothing is stopping me :)

I have ever heard about this guy, I think what he's achieved is outstanding but I wouldn't like it. I have tried sailing, I love it but not as much as he did. I don't feel any connection with people who do things like that. If he was happy about all that sailing then it's good for him.
I don't have dreams that are so specific but once I have the only thing it's stopping me is myself if.
I believe that every dream is equal and you can’t say that your dream is smaller or you can’t compare it. You can, and you should. Climbing is really challenging and it has to be awesome to fulfil this dream.
I’m glad that you’ve heard this name. I’m excited that what has he done is impressive for non-sailors too. Only if you like water, you definitely should try sailing once again, but this time be sure to choose good weather as it will show you all of the beauty of sailing.
I fully recommend you to do it. Memories from these kind of trips are amazing and we won’t forget them for a long time.
Having stable, satisfied life is a great dream and beautiful goal to work on. As long as you are happy and don’t regret anything, that’s amazing. But I have to ask, why don’t you like travelling?
I’m really happy that you have heard about him and you admire what he has done.
Are you currently collection money to make your dreams come true?
That’s great! Would you like to sail farther into see or even ocean?
I know what you are talking about. Thoughts like “I can do it, but I don’t think it’s a good time now” or other similar options. You have to overcome them and don’t look back.
No, I have never heard of him before. I respect him for making his dreams come true, but I would not like to spend the last years of my life like this.

No, I never tried to sail. Maybe I will try in the future.

No, I have completely different dreams. I would like to create a cryptocurrency exchange and many other related projects. Mostly, I'm being stopped by money.

I’m really glad that you liked it. Spending time on a boat is amazing. You can forget about everything what is going in the city, turn off your mobile and relax with friends.
You have an exciting dream! Running a marathon isn’t easy and you need to be pretty strong, both physically and mentally.
Unfortunately, modern ships are also intelligent and there are a lot of electricity and devices that make almost everything for you, but it’s not fun. If you sail on classic ship, where you have to make everything by your hands, there is truly fun.
Fulfilling dreams like his can be a little bit challenging, because only individuals are strong enough to make this happen.
I agree that money is something like a barrier, but the only way is to collect them as long as you have to and when you reach satisfying amount of money, you shouldn’t even think about it.
Do you think you could collect money for you first dream soon or it’s still a long way?

I'm proud that he was a Polish guy. I admire him. He must have guts to do this alone. It's like overcoming something unbelievable. I'm delighted that he showed our men that if we want we can archive even our crazy dreams.

I steered a motorboat this holidays. It was cool! I enjoyed the fact that I was the captain and could choose whatever path I wanted. It's something different than when we are on the road and have only one option to drive. Whe you are sailing, you can swim whenever you desire. You can taste real freedom, which is incredible and now I encourage all my friends to try it.

I have other dreams than this guy had. I think I can say that I'm not like my friends, I follow my own hobbies, passions, desires and there is nothing that can stop me from archiving my goals. This year I wanted to travel to 12 different countries, it was my dream for a long time. I'm writing this comment from Budapest, my 11th country this year. I just around the corner of booking my last trip this year, so it's just a matter of time and I have plenty of time to travel to this one last country. That's one of the examples, I have many more, but this comment is not about barging, so I'll leave it for me ;)
I think I will try to achieve this goal. It's hard to say whether it will be a long way. :)
I have heard about him before and I admire his achievements. He was really determined and definitely can be viewed as a role model by many. He is a type of guy that earns his respect among people by his actions and proves others that nothing is impossible.

I tried sailing once and I really enjoyed it. Hopefuly I will have opportunities to sail again in the future :) I think it's a great way of spending your free time. It demands a bit of physical activity but also makes you feel relaxed and lets you enjoy fresh air.

I have my own goals and every day I am slowly getting closer to achieving them. My dreams are different than Leonid's but I think that his determination might inspire me to work harder towards them.

- I’ve never heard about him before actually, I have loved his story to beating his weaknesses, but I think if the human always thinking about beating weaknesses will waste a lot of time so, in my opinion, the human should work on strength points then the weaknesses will disappear automatically.

- Yes, I've n tried it before but just something like diving, In general, I love Sitting in front of the Nile "pure water" rather than sea "Salt water".

- l have dreams, not like his, what stops me from making my dreams come true, I didn't think in this question before.

Thank you for this great story.

No, I didn't heard about him, but I'm quite impressed about his achievements. It's hard to be that determined, and he did it. Wow

Have you ever tried sailing? Did you enjoy it? Or would you like to try it?

No, I didn't because I think that it is not my kind of thing to do. Of course it may be interesting for someone, but I feel like I wouldn't enjoy it.

Do you have a dream like his? What stops you from making your dreams come true?

I have a lot of dreams, and I think that nothing can stop me. It's my life and I have to live it in 100%. That's the way to live for me, wish me luck.

I haven' heard about him before but his achievements are inspiring, especially if he had to deal with bad health condition. I have tried sailing in middle school and it was quite enjoying and I would like to go on an yacht somewhere in the future, maybe next year. I could say that I have dream to become rally driver or MotoGP biker, but they are very unrealistic, as I don't believe that i could handle the pressure.
I have never heard about him before. I liked this story. It is inspiring to do something, inspiring to dream. I also dream about traveling. But I also dream about opening my own company in Poland. I want to be financially independent. Leonid fulfilled his dream despite the illness and difficulties. He is worthy of respect. And I think that is an example for people who for a long time can not decide on something. Indecision, laziness, temporary fear also bothers me. But I gradually correct the situation by working on myself. I will definitely make my dream come true!

Have you heard about him before? What do you think about him and what he has done?
No I haven't but I should! In my opinion his achievement should be more popular.
Have you ever tried sailing? Did you enjoy it? Or would you like to try it?
Yes I have tried and I really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of sailing and I'm not keen on taking an exam to became a skipper but from time to time I like to sail with my friends.
Do you have a dream like his? What stops you from making your dreams come true?
My dream is also to travel the world but not by sailing. I would like to see the world and connect it with filming. I think the biggest obstacle is to leave my family for long and other ordinary things.
I mean, there are some dreams which can be quite easily fulfilled and these are the ones I call small.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
