Week 7 [26.11-02.12.18] How to choose the perfect gift

Winter is coming…

So does the Christmas. And what does it mean? Yeees, that many of us will start to look for gifts for your family, friends and loved ones. It has always been a very fun time to me as I insanely love to buy and give presents, but I know that it’s not that easy for everyone. So today I decided to make a little guide to choosing presents and hopefully it will help somebody with such a hard decision :)
1.      Ask.
The easiest way to make a good gift is just to ask this person if he/she wants or needs something. Pros: recipient will definitely like this gift; you won’t spend too much time on it. Cons: it won’t be a surprise; sometimes you cannot afford it if gift is expensive.
2.      Listen.
If the recipient is close to you and you hang out together often, you most likely can hear sometimes the phrases like “oh, this stuff is so cool!” or “I would love to have it”. I have such a short memory, that I made it a habit to note things that my friends like, so when it comes to Birthday or Christmas, I can just find those notes and buy something from the list. Easy!
3.      Watch.
Social media can say a lot about the person. Check recipient’s Instagram or Facebook and analyze latest posts and general information about the person. Maybe he will be happy to receive tickets to the concert of his favorite band? Maybe he just broke his favorite headphones and you can afford to buy same ones? Maybe dancing inflatable man is something he desires? You never know. But maybe social media do?

4.      Personalize.
Remember that price doesn’t matter! Think how you two met or how you like to spend time together. You can give something representing the place where you met (like tickets to the same place or even the map with the sign in exact place of meeting) with the text like “I’m happy that I was in the right place at the right time” works mostly for girls. Or if you two likes to play games, maybe 100zł gift card for Steam is the best present you can make. Some time ago I gave to my friend a present in a wooden box, which was thoroughly glued with super glue so that it can’t be open easily. After seeing confusion on his face, I gave the second part of the gift – a crowbar with the red bow – and said that he always can count on my help :)
5.      Create.
Do some funny handicraft. Your mom will love the awkward handmade cake with uneven letters on it and ugly scarf with the penguins that you made yourself will definitely make your other half laugh, and that’s exactly what we want, right? There’s a lot of tutorials on the internet, and you can definitely find the one that is doable for you.
6.      Exaggerate.
This person loves chocolate? Give him 5 kilograms! Loves to draw? Buy a giant pencil with a giant eraser. Or you can make a funny present by giving a 1000000 dollars… Zimbabwean dollars ¯ \ _ () _ / ¯

7.      Impress.
Well, more precisely, give impressions as a gift. Take the person to a bungee jumping, a dark restaurant, luna park or take a day off and organize a city-quest guiding the recipient to his favorite places in the city and bringing back some good memories. The most important part of this present is to be near the recipient all the time.
8.      Kits
“Netflix kit” with the popcorn and cola, “Christmas kit” with the cocoa, cookies and marshmallows, “Date kit” with the wine, cheese and grapes, “Harry Potter kit” with the chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts beans… If nothing above works, food works.

Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
What was the best gift you gave and received?

Comments

It's not hard for me because I'm buying gifts only for people I know very well ;)
I'm afraid that I have not used you ideas :(
Hmmm the best gift ever? It's really hard to say, but if I have to:
- I remember my first PC. It was something really big in my life, because maybe due to it I'm programmer now.
Damn, I am not religious, but sure, Christmas does indeed affect me with its spirit! And I personally never expect any gifts for birthdays or any other holidays, since I already have everything I want. But some Steam cards or Ps store codes will be perfect)

There's never too much Steam cards ! xD

Well, sometimes it's hard to find a perfect gift even for the closest people. What would you buy for the person who has everything?
Bartosz Barnat said…
In my opinion it's hard to find a gift for someone that you don't know many things about. When you know a person you can instantly think of like 10+ things that you could buy or create or even arrange.

I think I used all ideas listed by you. I sometimes mix 2 or 3 of them just to make it a little more interesting.

The best gift I gave hmmm... I think it was 6 presents for christmas all packed separately just that someone will have fun ripping the paper from them. I listened to a person so I knew what she would want to get for christmas and I think she didn't really though about getting all of them at once and then spending best 6 hours in a trip talking to each other about everything that have happend from the day we met. When it comes to the best gift I got I think it was a bracelet, a first present that was personalized just for me and It had a writing which was a part of a song that we sang together.

Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
No, it's not difficult for me,the more I like to make gifts than to receive.

Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
I have not used you ideas

What was the best gift you gave and received?
To be honest, I don't know,I was always asked what I want(
Although when I was little I always wanted a steering simulator , and dad gave me for the New year , all the girls want dolls and I wanted a steering wheel for NFS)
Unknown said…
Yeah, It’s very difficult to choose a gift. I can’t say why, I just can’t choose gifts.

From the ideas you mentioned I used only one to ask somebody what he or she wants to get.

The best gift ever I received was a big willow basket lined with a nice blanket. In the basket you could find everything that is the best delicious cookies, great tea ( with a cup ), foreign chocolates and the best - Jack Daniels. Everything looked phenomenal.

And all this I got grom a special girl but you probably don’t know her.

I love giving presents, but it's really hard to find a good one. I like buying gifts which are useful. I prefer to get no gift, rather than getting one that I will have no idea what to do with and which shelf it should stand on.
From the things listed above I most often listen. Very often people say that they'd love to have something but they don't want to spend money on it because of higher priorities. This is I think the easiest way to make a gift that fits. When I totally have no idea on what to buy, then I simply ask. The person we ask never knows if we'll buy it or not, and there're very often simple things that make people happy.
I don't remember what was the gift I ever gave because I classify them more in terms of usability, not awesomeness, but the best gift I ever got was a quad which I got when I was 8.
Anna Moskalenko said…
Oh my Gosh, those present ideas sounds really cute, lucky you :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
I still want this steering wheel! The happiest moment of my life was when I got PS2 for my Birthday.
Anna Moskalenko said…
One of the sweetest presents I have ever gotten was when somebody picked me up two hours before the Woman's Day for a night city riding and gave me my favorite wine at 0:00. As I wrote in the article, personalize :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
Yeah, it's true, usually things that people don't buy for themselves because of the "higher priorities" giving them much more satisfaction than any other ones.
Artem Lipovatyi said…
1. It depends primarily on the person to whom I want to make a gift. Often this is not a big difficulty, especially when you know this person, not for the first year. But there are also situations when I think over a few weeks over a gift or ask for help from close people.

2. Yes, half of the above ideas I used. I can say with confidence that they work.

3. It's hard for me to say because every gift is the best in its own way. The main thing is that it should be made from the heart and with warmth. After all, is considered the attention and care, is not it?
It is very hard for me to choose a perfect gift even when I know someone very well. I am trying to make the best present for someone and it is always hard to figure out what would be the best for him or her. It is either to many ideas or no idea at all.
I am trying to listen to what person is saying, what he or she wants and ask them if I have no clue. I like to personalise items which I give even with small meaningfull symbol. I also make christmas and birthday cards by myself so every is prepared exactly for specific person and one of the kind.
In most cases it is hard for me to choose a gift because I don't know needs of person and I can't choose something special and that's why in most cases I just give a money. But I have cases (like with my girlfriend) when I know some of general needs and give something what person needs and I think this is good way to make a gifts.

I usually try to ask person what he needs without direct questions and in way that this person didn't will be know that I plan something and this plan works for me.

For me if some who didn't know what to present to me better to not present any gift or just give money because if I will get thing that I don't need this cause stress for me because person expect good reaction from me but I can't give it.
Yes, sometimes it is hard for e to choose a git. Some people seems to have very narrow hobbies and it is hard to find something which would pleased them. On the other hand there are people who don’t know what they want. For me it is sometimes a misery, thinking about what gift would fit such person.
Yes I have been using some of these ideas. Mostly I ask directly what someone would like to get and I try also to buy or make smaller gifts as a surprise. Even if unexpected gift is more or less disappointing, there is always the second one which was “ordered”. When I am choosing the surprising gift, I am trying to think what the other person likes and what would make her happy.
Well it is hard to tell what is the best present, especially from someone else perspective. Last Christmas, I gave my mom a computer I think it was very good gift because she uses it everyday and it is much better than the old one. Best present I have received was air rifle. It was totally unexpected and it gave me and my whole family a lot of fun.
Marcin Mróz said…
It depends on the person for which I'm about to buy a gift. If I know someone well, probably I know what she/he would like to get, but otherwise it could be hard. Also buying gifts for my grandparents can be tough sometimes, as they tend rather to give away things for us or are so accustomed to the things that they already use that they find all new stuff unnecessary.
I think that I'm using mostly 1st and 2nd method. First one is the most effective, because you are certain that the gifted person won't be disappointed. Second is a bit risky, but the final result could be a lot better the first one.
I guess that the best gift that I gave was a new phone for my mom after she broke a previous one. The best present that I received was probably a new car from my grandparents.
It is hard to choose a gift for a person that i do not really know anything about, but usually i don't have problems choosing gifts, especially among my closest friend because we do not gift anything to eachother. I have used some of the ideas above, and it usually helps. I am rather ascetic person so i do not encourage people to gift me anything usually and do not mind to much about gidts, but i think that experiences and new opportunities that can be opened to you via "gift" is a best thing.

Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
Yes, I always have difficulty choosing a gift, because I always try to put a certain meaning in it, and I think a lot before giving gifts to someone. But in general, the process of finding a gift for any occasion is a very pleasant process.
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
No, I did not use your ideas. But the idea with 1,000,000 Zimbabwe dollars or 5 kg of chocolate I like.
What was the best gift you gave and received?
It is hard to say. I prefer to make gifts, but not to receive. But I still think that the best gift is a book.
Unknown said…
Yes, it is quite hard for me to choose a gift - while I'm usually reasonably sure that the gift will be well-received, even a small chance of the gift not being welcome is quite scary. I have used one of the ideas mentioned here - specifically, asking. While asking will ruin the surprise, it will ensure that the person you're giving a gift to will receive what they want.

I don't really remember what was the best gift I gave, but the best gift I've received is propably a drawing for use as an online avatar made by old friend. I use said avatar to this day.
Unknown said…
It is not difficult for me to choose gifts, because, as was said in this article, I listen to what people from my environment say (to whom I would like to give gifts). It happens that I have little acquaintance with a person and I need to choose a gift for him, then I will, of course, ask directly what he would like to receive as a gift. But more often it’s not difficult for me to choose. Sometimes the choice is obvious - the technique, it develops and changes very often, so the choice is great, then I have only to find out what is not and you can choose a gift for every taste.
Yes, I use all these ideas, but more often I apply them to different people. For example, I could make a cake for my mother, because she will be very happy to take a gift which was done by myself.
All the gifts I chose were super!
Unknown said…
It is very difficult for me. The closer the person the harder it is to buy a gift, because I really want this gift to appeal
The pressure is too high :D
Looking at your ideas, I think it was only the first time I applied it, but a bit differently.
For Christmas in my family there is such a custom that we write a letter to Santa Claus and then you know what a everyone wants to get and it is definitely easier to choose a gift.
I think every gift I got was great because it was a gift. As for the gift that I gave, I think that the girl is a night table, because all her life she wanted to have her own one, where she could paint herself and so on.

It is difficult for me to choose the presents, even if the person I want to donate is well known for me. At the back of my head, I am afraid that the given present won't be liked.

I usually ask someone if there is something that person needs. In most of the cases, I know at least category I want to focus. That way it easier to choose the right present because the categories are limited.

I am not sure if I have any 'best' present I received. However, the best present I gave is the one for my parent on their 25th wedding anniversary. With my brother and his wife, we prepared the presentation about their marriage where all of their friends could say something about them.
Unknown said…
With presents is different, it is not always difficult, but it is not always easy; p
it's the hardest thing with the guys, they have most things or they do not need much, with women it's easier because you can always buy a voucher for the store and after the problem.
Most probably, everyone used them: D but personally I am a believer in giving gifts that would be a gift and a souvenir in one.
What I received, definitely a barcelona t-shirt with player signatures. What I gave it is probably a frame with photos for parents after which they cried. :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
I agree, sometimes it's quite hard to fing a good gift even for the person that we know very well. Especially if this person has kinda everything :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
I loveee making cards, but unfortunately I can't draw, that's why sometimes it's hard for me to realize my ideas. Can you draw?

That's why I recommend you to watch video with Benedict Cumberbatch, where he's showing how to react to shitty gifts :D

Anna Moskalenko said…
I like your idea with the "additional" surprise gift, I think it's a great way to make a gift, that will fit the person for sure.
Anna Moskalenko said…
Oh yes, a new car is obviously the best gift ever!
I have such dificulties with the gifts for my grandma as well, it was so hard to make her use her new phone, because OH MY GOSH it has no buttons :D
Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
For me It is super hard. I have a big family so choosing personalized gift for everyone is a nightmare. This time I think I’ll do some group gifts.

Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
Yes, probably most of them. The one with exaggeration is so simple but gives so much fun

What was the best gift you gave and received?
The best given would be song on guitar (I would feel too embarrassed to do it again). The best received would be photo album. I hadn’t any through entire life, received it during last Christmas
Anna Moskalenko said…
But do you like to receive gifts or not, or you just don't care?
Anna Moskalenko said…
Book is obviously a great gift, but it's hard to fit somebody's tastes without knowing. Person that like to read Freud's books may not be happy to receive Harry Potter series.
Anna Moskalenko said…
But don't you like to make surprises? It's risky, but it's fun! :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
Mom is always happy to receive handmade gifts, because you will always be a child for her ;)
Anna Moskalenko said…
Haha, girls needs sometimes are so simple, you just need to listen to her :)
Vladlen Kyselov said…
For me difficulty of choosing a gift for someone depends on how much I know that person, when have I spoken to him last time and so on. The better I know someone the much more easier for me to decide what should I buy.
Yes, I have used ideas listed above, especially first 3.
The best gift I ever received was a hand made figure of my favourite game character. The best gift that I gave was probably wooden hand made little car model.

1. Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
2. Have you ever used the ideas listed above?

I don't think it's hard for me to choose a gift. Yes, I've used the ideas listed above - at least few of them. When you really know the person you're going to give some gift, you are aware of at least few things that he/she likes.
If I don't know those things, I like to ask if there is anything that he/she will need - it always helps, because you're sure that this person won't get something that he/she won't like or need.

3. What was the best gift you gave and received?

It's hard for me to choose one, but one of the unforgettable moments is my grandfather's 70 birthday. His biggest passion and hobby is hunting. My whole family bought him his dream car - big, camo pickup with all the equipment he'll need. He was crying the whole evening. He wasn't expecting it at all. It was just amazing feeling for us to see him that happy.

To be honest, I'm happy and grateful for every gift I received. People who are with my on my birthday/any occasion when you're getting gifts are the most important thing for me.
But I think that the best gift I received was the VIP meet&greet with Korn ticket.
My friends know that I'm a big fan of them and it's my favorite band.
Filip Sawicki said…
I’m so bad at choosing gifts… This is my main trait that I have no idea how to solve. I thought that people love surprises the most, but as I got older I came into conclusion that practical stuff seems more pleasing. That is why I always ask a person what he wants to get. I have little to no time to come up with creative gifts and I want to be sure that recipient will be satisfied.
Unknown said…
I did not even expect that you liked it so much. I really enjoy it, really.
Piotr Ciesla said…
Well it really depends on the person. If I know that person really good I can figure it out (of course if I remember to do it in advance)

I try to implement rule number 4 but I sometimes end up in rule number one ;)

One of my best gifts was my birthday gift. My close friends surprised me and gave me clues where to go. Outside there wos car waiting for me with driver. Later on we travel from clue to another clue. In every place staff knew I was coming and gave me some gifts. It was one of the best days of my life :).
Unknown said…
It's not hard for me to choose a gift, especially if I have to choose a gift for my family because I know them very well.
I used the second "listen".
I think that the best gift that I have ever received was PlayStation 3 which was bought by my sister for me.

Yes, personalizing is a thing! I remember the really sweet video which my friend's parents prepare for her 18's Birthday, it contained a lot of videos from her childhood. This is a really great idea!
Anna Moskalenko said…
Oh my, vouchers are not the best gift for woman, hello! :D
Anna Moskalenko said…
I have to prepare at least 15 gifts for this Christmas, I can totally relate! :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
Wooow, wooden hand made car model sounds cool. Have you done it yourself?
Anna Moskalenko said…
I think your granfather is the happiest man in the world :D Of course he was not expecting it!
Anna Moskalenko said…
Well, it's very practical aproach, but I still think that creative and personalized gift have more heart in it.
Anna Moskalenko said…
It was probably the funniest day of my life (and Asia's as well), as we were running around the city and talking to workers of Starbucks, Handroll, PJATK and others that "we have a really strange question... But would you help us?" :D Greatest experience, never thought that people in Warsaw are actually so nice and helpful :)
Anna Moskalenko said…
Well, for me it's even harder to choose a gift for somebody from my family. Which method do you use when choosing gifts for them? Do you asking them or just clearly know what they would like to recieve?
Choosing gift depends on for who it will be. Sometimes is really hard to choose anything that other person will enjoy, but sometimes is obvious what kind of gift you should buy this person. Personally, I mostly have problem with buying gifts. I don’t know exactly why, maybe I’m just too worried about if this person will like my gift.
Those ideas you posted are really helpful. I used few times “impress” gift and it always was good idea. Funny presents also are great, all of it depends on relation with other person.
It’s hard to choose the best gift I have ever gave, but I think it was a big photography made of a lot of small ones. About received gift, I think it was a trip. Amazing week off when we visited as many places as we could. It was a really fantastic time.
Unknown said…
It depends who is my target. I have a list of gift ideas in my notes, so in most case, it's just about looking into that list when I need to buy somebody a gift.

Actually, I try to follow all of the ideas you presented, they really help!

The gift I'm most proud of is a surprise trip I bought for my mom and me this year. I was super happy that finally, I can buy something for her with my own money – money that I earned not get from her or my other parts of the family. The amazing gift I received was my first MacBook. I got it for my 18th birthday, and I remember the whole family was gathering funds to buy me one. I was so happy after opening the box and seeing that my desired machine was inside.
Anna Moskalenko said…
I think your mom is very proud of you :) Such a lovely present, good memories are the best gift!
Anna Moskalenko said…
Hm, big photography, that is made with small ones sounds great. How did you do that?

1.Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?
Everytime it's hard!!! I mean it's hard to chose gift for: parents, children in my family. It's not hard to chose it for gf.
Why? I have bought many things for them and I don't want to rebuy simillar thing, so year after year it's hard to choose something unique.
2.Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
Yup, every year for Christmas I'm making something by myself. I'm having fun making figurines, making some ornates etc. I'm just enjoying it :)
3. What was the best gift you gave and received?
Best gift I gave... It must be hand made replica of "Dragonslayer Sword" from Berserk. Me and my firends made it by ourselves and gave it to my girlfriend for this year's birthday.
Best thing I got... A handmade personal card from my girlfriend. It had so many emotions written in it.
Handmade gifts ROCKS!
Anna Moskalenko said…
Yep, handmade gifts are always the best, because they're showing all your love that you put into them :)

I think its depend of person, because sometimes we just know what gift its perfect for someone or we just thinking about months and didn’t figure out.

Yes, for example created gifts with origami and listen what person need in life.

Hmmm 5kilograms of chocolates its one of them xD.

3. What was the best gift you gave and received?

Yes, it's very hard for me. It's the same situation on Christmas every year when I want to buy something for my family. I have no problem with money and I don't think about it. I don't know how to choose thing which will be good and necessary for my family members. I hate it!
Yes, I have used some ideas what you mentioned in your presentation but I don't like situation described in first point. I understand that is the best way for good gift but it have to be surprise. It's the most important for me so that's why I never ask other people.
Hmm, I think that the best gift I have ever gave was Kindle for my mother because she love reading and I can see that was a perfect option. What I received? Probably car for my 18 birthday. It was beautiful day, seriously :)

It isn't so complicated to choose a present if you know person well. If not - you always could buy something standard but useful. For example good shower gel from Body Shop or Yves Rocher. I always use second advice from the topic: listen. It always works with girlfriends. Hardly recommend for everyone.

For me the best gift was Kindle Paperwhite because I really like reading and mine was stolen.

Its hard to choose the right gift, my usual approach is to observe for a long time and look out for things that ppl get annoyed at or are in need of imminently that i can afford. It also comes to me at ease to simply ask them what they want, its not that hard and by any means its not rude, more than less its the best approach.
Too bad not even we ourselves know what we want sometimes.
The best gift i have ever received. hmm it would be a tablet it did not help me immediately but along the way i got much use of it and it helped me out in many situations, why it was the best ? Well because i would never have had bought it myself, considering a waste of money.

I buy gift for family twice years, for birthday and christmas. It is not hard to purchase a gift because I have scheme for present. On birthday I usually give something handmaded and for christmas I buy something practical. I generally use point „Listen” and „Create” if I connect that two things I can create something extra orginally. I exactly remember I gave diary for my girlfriend with our memories which we experienced that was a lot of work because 4 years we are together. Last week for my birthday I received package for my knife of course it made handicraft. I’m the happiest when I received that gifts.

It is very hard for me to choose a gift. I really care if my present will be liked and try to find the perfect one. I spend a lot of time in shopping malls looking for the best thing that I can buy. On the other hand I hate shopping so always when it's time to buy present for Christmas I am scare of this.
I tried some of them but also find some new that I think will help me in my future so thanks ;)
The best present for me is new game that I can play on my Playstation console so I am always very happy when i recieving one.

I have to admit that sometimes I have a problem to pick the right gift but mostly because I have to many ideas. Yes I use these ideas all the time but one which I don't like is asking pepole what they want. I know some people would like to tell me what would the want but I prefer to do it on my own. Giving other presents to other people gives me joy. I believe that some kind of suprise improves the effect and gifted people can know that I know them well. The best present I gave was propably tickets to Paris for my girlfriend because we spent a great time there. And the best one i recived was certainly a camera. Because of this this gift I started my hobby and passion which I'm still developing.
Usually, it’s challenging for me to choose a gift. Why? When I was younger I didn’t have enough money to present what I wanted to. And now I just don’t know what to present. I’m only talking about family members. I don’t have such difficulty with friends.

Of course, I have used the ideas listed above. Not each but mostly all of them.

In my life, I gave and received a lot of cool gifts. Choosing the best of them is hard. One of the best that I received was a Fender Stratocaster guitar. And the one I made was 21 balloons with a jewelry inside one of them.

"Is it hard for you to choose a gift? Why?"
It depends... If I know this person pretty well, I generally don't have any problems with buying gift. If I don't know that person pretty well, I still don't have any problems with that, because I'm not focusing on buying good, adjusted present. I just don't care as much as I should. But If I know this person, but we are not super close, I very often have big problem with choosing a gift.

"Have you ever used the ideas listed above?"
Nope, never.

"What was the best gift you gave and received?"
Hmm... Two years ago I gave my best friends huge (2m) teddy bear. To the present day she loves it. I saw in her eyes tears when I gave it to her.
I and my sister are planning to buy for our parents star map of the sky when they first met. I think that could be wonderful gift for them.

Yep, it is hard.
One of the best kind of present is present that really needs.

In other cases, you want to give something that would like to see and with some use in his life. It is sad to give present that will just stand on the shell.
Coming up with gifts for people was always a thing that gave me problems. I strongly believe in gifts that have a practical use and sentimental value, so finding something that works for a particular person is usually very puzzling. Asking for what they want doesn’t work on modest people, listening and watching is not going to be much help when dealing with someone that doesn’t talk much. I’ve used those methods before with various results, but now that I’ve read your ideas I think my gift idea arsenal has expanded.
