Winter is coming…
1. Ask.
The easiest
way to make a good gift is just to ask this person if he/she wants or needs
something. Pros: recipient will definitely like this gift; you won’t spend too
much time on it. Cons: it won’t be a surprise; sometimes you cannot afford it
if gift is expensive.
2. Listen.
If the
recipient is close to you and you hang out together often, you most likely can
hear sometimes the phrases like “oh, this stuff is so cool!” or “I would love to
have it”. I have such a short memory, that I made it a habit to note things
that my friends like, so when it comes to Birthday or Christmas, I can just
find those notes and buy something from the list. Easy!
3. Watch.
Social
media can say a lot about the person. Check recipient’s Instagram or Facebook
and analyze latest posts and general information about the person. Maybe he
will be happy to receive tickets to the concert of his favorite band? Maybe he
just broke his favorite headphones and you can afford to buy same ones? Maybe
dancing inflatable man is something he desires? You never know. But maybe
social media do?
4. Personalize.
Remember
that price doesn’t matter! Think how you two met or how you like to spend time
together. You can give something representing the place where you met (like
tickets to the same place or even the map with the sign in exact place of
meeting) with the text like “I’m happy that I was in the right place at the
right time” works mostly for girls. Or if you two likes to play games, maybe 100zł gift card for Steam
is the best present you can make. Some time ago I gave to my friend a present
in a wooden box, which was thoroughly glued with super glue so that it can’t be
open easily. After seeing confusion on his face, I gave the second part of the gift
– a crowbar with the red bow – and said that he always can count on my help :)
5. Create.
Do some funny
handicraft. Your mom will love the awkward handmade cake with uneven letters on
it and ugly scarf with the penguins that you made yourself will definitely make
your other half laugh, and that’s exactly what we want, right? There’s a lot of
tutorials on the internet, and you can definitely find the one that is doable
for you.
6. Exaggerate.
This person
loves chocolate? Give him 5 kilograms! Loves to draw? Buy a giant pencil with a
giant eraser. Or you can make a funny present by giving a 1000000 dollars… Zimbabwean
dollars ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯
7.
Impress.
Well, more
precisely, give impressions as a gift. Take the person to a bungee jumping, a dark
restaurant, luna park or take a day off and organize a city-quest guiding the
recipient to his favorite places in the city and bringing back some good
memories. The most important part of this present is to be near the recipient all
the time.
8. Kits
“Netflix kit” with
the popcorn and cola, “Christmas kit” with the cocoa, cookies and marshmallows,
“Date kit” with the wine, cheese and grapes, “Harry Potter kit” with the chocolate
frogs and Bertie Botts beans… If nothing above works, food works.
Is it hard for
you to choose a gift? Why?
Have you ever used
the ideas listed above?
What was the
best gift you gave and received?
Comments
I'm afraid that I have not used you ideas :(
Hmmm the best gift ever? It's really hard to say, but if I have to:
- I remember my first PC. It was something really big in my life, because maybe due to it I'm programmer now.
I think I used all ideas listed by you. I sometimes mix 2 or 3 of them just to make it a little more interesting.
The best gift I gave hmmm... I think it was 6 presents for christmas all packed separately just that someone will have fun ripping the paper from them. I listened to a person so I knew what she would want to get for christmas and I think she didn't really though about getting all of them at once and then spending best 6 hours in a trip talking to each other about everything that have happend from the day we met. When it comes to the best gift I got I think it was a bracelet, a first present that was personalized just for me and It had a writing which was a part of a song that we sang together.
No, it's not difficult for me,the more I like to make gifts than to receive.
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
I have not used you ideas
What was the best gift you gave and received?
To be honest, I don't know,I was always asked what I want(
Although when I was little I always wanted a steering simulator , and dad gave me for the New year , all the girls want dolls and I wanted a steering wheel for NFS)
From the ideas you mentioned I used only one to ask somebody what he or she wants to get.
The best gift ever I received was a big willow basket lined with a nice blanket. In the basket you could find everything that is the best delicious cookies, great tea ( with a cup ), foreign chocolates and the best - Jack Daniels. Everything looked phenomenal.
And all this I got grom a special girl but you probably don’t know her.
From the things listed above I most often listen. Very often people say that they'd love to have something but they don't want to spend money on it because of higher priorities. This is I think the easiest way to make a gift that fits. When I totally have no idea on what to buy, then I simply ask. The person we ask never knows if we'll buy it or not, and there're very often simple things that make people happy.
I don't remember what was the gift I ever gave because I classify them more in terms of usability, not awesomeness, but the best gift I ever got was a quad which I got when I was 8.
2. Yes, half of the above ideas I used. I can say with confidence that they work.
3. It's hard for me to say because every gift is the best in its own way. The main thing is that it should be made from the heart and with warmth. After all, is considered the attention and care, is not it?
I am trying to listen to what person is saying, what he or she wants and ask them if I have no clue. I like to personalise items which I give even with small meaningfull symbol. I also make christmas and birthday cards by myself so every is prepared exactly for specific person and one of the kind.
I usually try to ask person what he needs without direct questions and in way that this person didn't will be know that I plan something and this plan works for me.
For me if some who didn't know what to present to me better to not present any gift or just give money because if I will get thing that I don't need this cause stress for me because person expect good reaction from me but I can't give it.
Yes I have been using some of these ideas. Mostly I ask directly what someone would like to get and I try also to buy or make smaller gifts as a surprise. Even if unexpected gift is more or less disappointing, there is always the second one which was “ordered”. When I am choosing the surprising gift, I am trying to think what the other person likes and what would make her happy.
Well it is hard to tell what is the best present, especially from someone else perspective. Last Christmas, I gave my mom a computer I think it was very good gift because she uses it everyday and it is much better than the old one. Best present I have received was air rifle. It was totally unexpected and it gave me and my whole family a lot of fun.
I think that I'm using mostly 1st and 2nd method. First one is the most effective, because you are certain that the gifted person won't be disappointed. Second is a bit risky, but the final result could be a lot better the first one.
I guess that the best gift that I gave was a new phone for my mom after she broke a previous one. The best present that I received was probably a new car from my grandparents.
Yes, I always have difficulty choosing a gift, because I always try to put a certain meaning in it, and I think a lot before giving gifts to someone. But in general, the process of finding a gift for any occasion is a very pleasant process.
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
No, I did not use your ideas. But the idea with 1,000,000 Zimbabwe dollars or 5 kg of chocolate I like.
What was the best gift you gave and received?
It is hard to say. I prefer to make gifts, but not to receive. But I still think that the best gift is a book.
I don't really remember what was the best gift I gave, but the best gift I've received is propably a drawing for use as an online avatar made by old friend. I use said avatar to this day.
Yes, I use all these ideas, but more often I apply them to different people. For example, I could make a cake for my mother, because she will be very happy to take a gift which was done by myself.
All the gifts I chose were super!
The pressure is too high :D
Looking at your ideas, I think it was only the first time I applied it, but a bit differently.
For Christmas in my family there is such a custom that we write a letter to Santa Claus and then you know what a everyone wants to get and it is definitely easier to choose a gift.
I think every gift I got was great because it was a gift. As for the gift that I gave, I think that the girl is a night table, because all her life she wanted to have her own one, where she could paint herself and so on.
I usually ask someone if there is something that person needs. In most of the cases, I know at least category I want to focus. That way it easier to choose the right present because the categories are limited.
I am not sure if I have any 'best' present I received. However, the best present I gave is the one for my parent on their 25th wedding anniversary. With my brother and his wife, we prepared the presentation about their marriage where all of their friends could say something about them.
it's the hardest thing with the guys, they have most things or they do not need much, with women it's easier because you can always buy a voucher for the store and after the problem.
Most probably, everyone used them: D but personally I am a believer in giving gifts that would be a gift and a souvenir in one.
What I received, definitely a barcelona t-shirt with player signatures. What I gave it is probably a frame with photos for parents after which they cried. :)

I have such dificulties with the gifts for my grandma as well, it was so hard to make her use her new phone, because OH MY GOSH it has no buttons :D
For me It is super hard. I have a big family so choosing personalized gift for everyone is a nightmare. This time I think I’ll do some group gifts.
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
Yes, probably most of them. The one with exaggeration is so simple but gives so much fun
What was the best gift you gave and received?
The best given would be song on guitar (I would feel too embarrassed to do it again). The best received would be photo album. I hadn’t any through entire life, received it during last Christmas
Yes, I have used ideas listed above, especially first 3.
The best gift I ever received was a hand made figure of my favourite game character. The best gift that I gave was probably wooden hand made little car model.
2. Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
I don't think it's hard for me to choose a gift. Yes, I've used the ideas listed above - at least few of them. When you really know the person you're going to give some gift, you are aware of at least few things that he/she likes.
If I don't know those things, I like to ask if there is anything that he/she will need - it always helps, because you're sure that this person won't get something that he/she won't like or need.
3. What was the best gift you gave and received?
It's hard for me to choose one, but one of the unforgettable moments is my grandfather's 70 birthday. His biggest passion and hobby is hunting. My whole family bought him his dream car - big, camo pickup with all the equipment he'll need. He was crying the whole evening. He wasn't expecting it at all. It was just amazing feeling for us to see him that happy.
To be honest, I'm happy and grateful for every gift I received. People who are with my on my birthday/any occasion when you're getting gifts are the most important thing for me.
But I think that the best gift I received was the VIP meet&greet with Korn ticket.
My friends know that I'm a big fan of them and it's my favorite band.
I try to implement rule number 4 but I sometimes end up in rule number one ;)
One of my best gifts was my birthday gift. My close friends surprised me and gave me clues where to go. Outside there wos car waiting for me with driver. Later on we travel from clue to another clue. In every place staff knew I was coming and gave me some gifts. It was one of the best days of my life :).
I used the second "listen".
I think that the best gift that I have ever received was PlayStation 3 which was bought by my sister for me.
Those ideas you posted are really helpful. I used few times “impress” gift and it always was good idea. Funny presents also are great, all of it depends on relation with other person.
It’s hard to choose the best gift I have ever gave, but I think it was a big photography made of a lot of small ones. About received gift, I think it was a trip. Amazing week off when we visited as many places as we could. It was a really fantastic time.
Actually, I try to follow all of the ideas you presented, they really help!
The gift I'm most proud of is a surprise trip I bought for my mom and me this year. I was super happy that finally, I can buy something for her with my own money – money that I earned not get from her or my other parts of the family. The amazing gift I received was my first MacBook. I got it for my 18th birthday, and I remember the whole family was gathering funds to buy me one. I was so happy after opening the box and seeing that my desired machine was inside.
Everytime it's hard!!! I mean it's hard to chose gift for: parents, children in my family. It's not hard to chose it for gf.
Why? I have bought many things for them and I don't want to rebuy simillar thing, so year after year it's hard to choose something unique.
2.Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
Yup, every year for Christmas I'm making something by myself. I'm having fun making figurines, making some ornates etc. I'm just enjoying it :)
3. What was the best gift you gave and received?
Best gift I gave... It must be hand made replica of "Dragonslayer Sword" from Berserk. Me and my firends made it by ourselves and gave it to my girlfriend for this year's birthday.
Best thing I got... A handmade personal card from my girlfriend. It had so many emotions written in it.
Handmade gifts ROCKS!
Yes, for example created gifts with origami and listen what person need in life.
Hmmm 5kilograms of chocolates its one of them xD.
- It is quite easy, I always ask the person what she/he would like to receive and I buy it.
2. Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
- Yes, I always use the first one because it always works for me. It saves me time and money, also I am always sure that the gift will make this person happy.
3. What was the best gift you gave and received?
- The best gift I have ever received was my second PC so I could play Warcraft III. I do not know which gift was the best because I always ask people what they would like to receive.
Yes, I have used some ideas what you mentioned in your presentation but I don't like situation described in first point. I understand that is the best way for good gift but it have to be surprise. It's the most important for me so that's why I never ask other people.
Hmm, I think that the best gift I have ever gave was Kindle for my mother because she love reading and I can see that was a perfect option. What I received? Probably car for my 18 birthday. It was beautiful day, seriously :)
For me the best gift was Kindle Paperwhite because I really like reading and mine was stolen.
Too bad not even we ourselves know what we want sometimes.
The best gift i have ever received. hmm it would be a tablet it did not help me immediately but along the way i got much use of it and it helped me out in many situations, why it was the best ? Well because i would never have had bought it myself, considering a waste of money.
I tried some of them but also find some new that I think will help me in my future so thanks ;)
The best present for me is new game that I can play on my Playstation console so I am always very happy when i recieving one.
Of course, I have used the ideas listed above. Not each but mostly all of them.
In my life, I gave and received a lot of cool gifts. Choosing the best of them is hard. One of the best that I received was a Fender Stratocaster guitar. And the one I made was 21 balloons with a jewelry inside one of them.
It depends... If I know this person pretty well, I generally don't have any problems with buying gift. If I don't know that person pretty well, I still don't have any problems with that, because I'm not focusing on buying good, adjusted present. I just don't care as much as I should. But If I know this person, but we are not super close, I very often have big problem with choosing a gift.
"Have you ever used the ideas listed above?"
Nope, never.
"What was the best gift you gave and received?"
Hmm... Two years ago I gave my best friends huge (2m) teddy bear. To the present day she loves it. I saw in her eyes tears when I gave it to her.
I and my sister are planning to buy for our parents star map of the sky when they first met. I think that could be wonderful gift for them.
- I haven't used any ideas you mentioned before and really there are great ideas. And I'll use them in the next gifts in general.
- I don't remember any gifts in general gave and received because I don't care about gifts in general.
One of the best kind of present is present that really needs.
In other cases, you want to give something that would like to see and with some use in his life. It is sad to give present that will just stand on the shell.
It depends on how good you know person. For example I always know what I can present to my girlfriend, but it is far too complicated with my colleagues.
Have you ever used the ideas listed above?
No I didn't but on my girlfriends 20 birthday I made a quest for her in town that we visited, and my friends helped me to do it memorizable.
What was the best gift you gave and received?
I think the best was quest, because of emotions that I presented. And received I don't know actually. There were many good gifts.
