Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Vegan Leather

Did you know that: 1. Every year around a billion animals are allocated for leather accessories production. 2 . Most of the skins are imported from China and India, where there are no Humane Slaughter Acts. 3 . In india, cows are forced to march for days with no end, without water, they are beaten and pushed. Red and green chili peppers are being inserted into the eyes of bulls that are loaded on trucks for transport. The peppers are meant to sting the eyes so badly that they are unable to lie down and rest. 4. Supposedly, sometimes cat and dog skin is mixed with other products on purpose. 5. In order to prepare leather for manufacturing, it’s treated with different kinds of extremely poisonous chemicals, including formaldehydes, that pose threat to the natural environment. 6. 20 to 50 percent of dye-works workers have increased risk of cancer. Leather for clothing and accessories is most commonly skinned from animals, such as cows, pigs, goats, sheep, alligators,...

Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Making your own board game

Have you ever played a board game? Of course you have, be it checkers or chess, board games are one of the oldest pastimes of humanity and even if you’re not really into more complicated games you must have played some. Games have evolved a great deal, especially in the last decade. Surprisingly, the new golden age of board games can be attributed to the popularization of the internet, which allows us to find easily more people who want to play, and more games. SOURCE Modern tabletop games range from simple, abstract games of association like for example Dixit to long, 8 hour fantasy adventures like the Might & Magic board game. Actually, it might be hard to find a big intellectual property that doesn’t have a tabletop counterpart - Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Witcher, there’s even a board game based on Doom and This War of Mine in the works. But designing and making board games is not reserved for big companies with already established properties, if you ever had a...

Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Drug sounds: e-drugs

Everything in the electronic version Nowadays we can buy books or newspapers in electronic versions. It can be sound – audio books or a file with text – e-books. We take notes, do shopping lists or drawings using our phones and computers. What else can be transformed into the e-version? What are e-drugs and how they work? A few months ago there was an article in the Polish Newsweek presenting new drugs: e-drugs. Basically it’s a sound that may cause effects similar to traditional drugs like heroin or cocaine. After using e-drugs you may feel relaxed and comfortable or you can be anxious, nervous and irritated. It all depends on the sound type, and of course on a single person. I have read a lot of opinions about using e-drugs. The descriptions were various. Some students use e-drugs to relax before exams, to improve their memory or just to feel better. Other people use it to feel stronger, more energized, and stimulated. There was also an experiment with a sound en...

Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Barbie and how little girls view the world

What forms a worldview of a child? Probably everyone being a little kid was sure about becoming a princess, footballer, hero or a singer in the future. It didn’t matter that our parents were for example doctors, lawyers or mechanics and had a simple, common jobs – no, we were born to live in a fairy tale and be heroes or princesses. We watched a lot of cartoons, tales or just family movies where everything was possible. Also we played special toys like Barbie, My Little Ponies or Superman and Batman, read comics about super heroes like X-men, Hulk or Spiderman. All of these things formed our worldview and our way of thinking. However, most men already know that they won’t be super heroes, but just engineers. On the other hand,  young women still want to look like Barbie. They want bigger lips, a narrow waist and long legs. http://static.wixstatic.com/media/3601aa_8a364dc73d654ac58dcb6bb634ccfdfe.jpg Barbie – some basic facts I don’t want you to get bored, so I...

Week 11 [09.01-15.01] LEGO - one of the world’s most powerful brands

It is probably fair to assume that every reader of this article knows Lego. There is even a great chance that you’ve owned at least one of the Lego sets. Furthermore, according to the most recent Brand Finance’s research, Lego has been classified as the world’s second most powerful brand. There is no wonder people like it so much; Lego is truly awesome! Let’s start off by reminding ourselves a little bit of history of Lego. As some of you may know the Lego Group is a Danish family-owned company and its name comes from the Danish phrase leg godt, which means “play well”. The very first Lego bricks sets started to be manufactured in 1949 and they were called "Automatic Binding Bricks". Since then, more than 400 billion Lego bricks have been produced. Pretty impressive, don’t you think? The first Automatic Binding Bricks set in the original cardboard box. Very hard to find these days. https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=700-12#T=S&O ={}  ...

Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Quantum Entanglement - the future of communication?

Have you ever thought about faster-than-light communication? Can you imagine a mechanism that would allow you to instantaneously exchange the information over arbitrarily large distances? Well, this is exactly what many people were thinking about when the scientists revealed the theory behind quantum entanglement. Before you get too excited, be aware that physicists had already agreed that the quantum entanglement does not contradict Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and yes, it basically means that the faster-than-light (FTL) communication is not possible. However, the entanglement phenomenon is still having a great potential to be a technological breakthrough in telecommunication. Why? We will get to that soon, but first let's try to explain to ourselves what the quantum entanglement really is.   The theory says that each fundamental particle has a property called “spin”. This property can be measured once we choose the direction in which to measure it. Such measurement ca...
