Week 12 [21-27.01.19] Yamato and Musashi - Biggest battleships in history

Yamato and Mushashi were the biggest battleships ever created. There were once symbols of the military might of the Japanese Empire and I would like to present you these amazing ships. As it was said at the beginning, Yamato and Mushashi were battleships. For these people, who are unfamiliar with the types of warships, I will try to explain this briefly. Battleships were descendants of sailing ships of the line from XIX century. It was   the strongest and biggest class of ships, designed to provide devastating fire power.   One of the first “modern” battleships was British Dreadnought from   1906 which set pattern for all later constructions. The main conception was to replace a huge amount of guns with a few cannons, but with outstanding fire power and range and to cover everything with thick steel arm or. No other warships had so much armour as battleships. However, steel is relatively a heavy material (the weight of a square metre of steel of t...

Week 12 [21-27.01.19] - Sound of 60s and 70's

Sound of 60s and 70's Have you ever wondered what's that warm sound, that's being heard in rhythm and blues, rock, and reggae, progressive rock? How about black church and gospel? And those old american movies where you could find baseball and hockey stadiums where such specific music has been played. That was all possible by two guys who invented the electric organs called  Hammond Organs - Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert Sometimes Hammond was acompanied by rotating speaker - Leslie speaker - which created a deep,  characteristic sound because of the constantly changing pitch shifts that result from the Doppler effect created by the moving sound source. Let's hear that genre-changing instrument. Have you ever heard about Hammond Organs or electronic organs? Do you like 70's funk or gospel music? Can you play any instrument?

Week 12 [21-27.01.19] - Trailer Park Boys

Since it premiered on an obscure Canadian cable channel in 2001, Mockumentary Trailer Park Boys has gone from an underground cult favorite to an international sensation, as audiences around the world loved Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles. Episodes revolve around Sunnyvale Trailer Park where our residents are trying to make money through dumb crimes while avoiding the police. Their schemes are complicated by the interference of the park's vindictive alcoholic supervisor Jim Lahey and his assistant and lover, Randy. Throughout the series, Ricky and Julian end up in and out of jail, with most of their schemes collapsing into failure. Some facts: -Almost nobody was professional Instead of professional actors many of the original cast were friends of creator. -Slow Start Trailer Park Boys debuted in 2001, but it didn't exactly set the world alight in its first season. However when the cast visited Los Angeles in 2004 they were shocked to find everyone knew who the...

Week 12 [21-27.01.19] - How to live without producing waste

I recently stumbled upon an interesting video where a girl tells that she has produced only 450 grams of garbage over the past three years. Then I found her lecture in the TED and decided to share it. I do not fully agree with it in some moments, in fact, I think, she is simply unhappy with modern society and unhappy with the lack of transparency in technological production.   But her overall message is clear to me. Questions : 1. What do you agree or disagree with in this video? 2. Will such small tricks related to household garbage help the ecology of city? 3. What steps in everyday life do you take to at least slightly reduce the amount of garbage you produce?

Week 12 [21-27.01.19] - Origin of the drifting

I am in love with Japanese culture and one of the reasons why I want to visit this country is one kind of sport - drifting. Here is brief history of this interesting sport. In different sources it is possible to find different mentions about the use of the guided skidding as a method of the most rapid passing of turn. Some certificates deepen even in 30th of ХХ of century, where the racing drivers of the European series of Grand Prix passed turns with displacement of back axis.  But all agree that the first country where the drift was formed as an independent movement and not related driving technique, was Japan. Originally from Japan, but got wide distribution and in other countri...

Week 12 [21-27.01.19] - Owning Tesla in Poland

When you hear about electric car, you most probably think about Tesla. These days electric cars are getting more and more popular. People buy electric cars for many reasons. Electric cars are mostly often used in cities, where distances are not too big so they can charge it at home. Going to longer trips requires more planning not to lose time changing the route or looking for chargers. Some people say that electric cars are awesome, others say it’s a mistake.  The model I chose is Tesla Model X. This car can fit your family and take you for a nice trip. Now let’s analyze how the trip may look like. Tesla says that the range of Model X is 295 miles which is about 415 kilometers. Let’s say that you live in Warsaw and you want to take you family to Gdańsk for a beach walk. The distance is 340 kilometers so assuming that you leave your house fully charged, you arrive to Gdańsk with about 70 kilometers distance left. And here comes the question, where will I refuel or actu...

Merriam-Webster declared 'science' the 2013 word of the year. But can reading something other than data and facts, say a work of fiction, help improve brain functioning ? Anthony explains many possible benefits that reading a fictitious book can have for the brain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYpofvqVxzc There are my questions to you: 1.      Do you think that reading fiction is still important nowadays? Week 12 [21-27.01.19] The gap between Project Managers and Developers

Many programmers don’t understand why they need a person in their team who can’t write a good code. This person makes agile planning, writes documentation, assigns tasks and always tries to control their work. Do they really need Projects Managers for making good software? The answer is yes. Two of these roles, Project Manager and Software developer are really important for the successful finishing of the project. Poor communication and lack of respect can crash even the most talented teams. So, both worlds should live in mutual understanding. Firstly, we should understand what responsibilities Project Managers and Developers have. A project manager is a person who has the overall responsibility for the successful initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling and closure of a project. Developers are responsible for the design, testing and maintenance of software programs for computer operating systems or applications. In agile methodology, which is ...
