Week 7 [07-13.12.20] Anime or cartoon?

Anime and cartoons have many similar features. They both take form of two-dimensional, illustrated visual art work, which is published not only on TV, but also in cinemas as a movies. For a person who isn’t a fan of any of those forms they might look really similar. Just some 2d characters living their lives on the screen for the enjoyment of masses. But looking at this topic closely, there are many differences between those two, which I would like to focus on.  The first thing that I would like to take a look at is a visual style. Of course, each work can have their own style, but there are some main features that are present in the most of each production. In anime, characters usually have an anatomy similar to normal people. The one, distinctive feature of this art style is the size of female characters eyes. They are usually big and shiny. Looking at cartoons, the style of most productions is simplistic, and artists can really go wild with their imagination, by thinking of the ...

Each day we stumble upon many funny images on the internet. Sometimes you see it on your feed, being unrelated to other topics that you are scrolling through, and other times you visit pages that are dedicated to assemble a lot of them, only to make you laugh and share it with your friends. Questions: Did you know the former definition of memes? Do you agree with it? How much time do you usually spend going through meme sites? Have you created any meme by yourself? Do you agree with the definition of memes given at the end of presentation?

Week 7 [7.12-13.12] Which is better: Soap or hand sanitizer?

Nowadays, we pay more attention to our hygiene. The pandemic has changed our habits. We wash our hands more thoroughly and more often, and we also use a hand sanitizer. Our hands have many folds and depressions where the virus can hide. If we do not want to get sick, we must make sure that our hands are free of pathogenic microbes. However, which is better, soap and water or alcohol. Before you watch the video below, which do you think is better, a soap or a hand sanitizer? Questions: What is better soap or hand sanitizer in the present pandemic? What did you think before watching this movie? What do you prefer, soap or hand sanitizer? Have you started paying more attention to hygiene since the pandemic started?

Week 7 [7.12-13.12] Time change - how does it affect our body?

On the night of October 26-27, there was a time change, perhaps the penultimate time. We put our watches back an hour, so we slept longer. But what does time change mean for our body? How we react to the change of time Our biological clocks do not like changes, even shifting the time one hour forward or backward can disrupt them. For a few days after changing the time, we may feel sleepy, tired, have a worse mood and problems with concentration. This is similar to jet lag after traveling by plane. The change from summer to winter time It makes the day shorter and dusk falls earlier. We miss the sunlight, we get up in the dark and go home in the dark. When this happens, the brain begins to produce more melatonin, the hormone that tells our biological clock what time of day it is. Melatonin levels peak at night, so we get sleepy. However, in winter, when less light reaches our eyes, melatonin levels also increase during the day. The change from winter to summer time The effects of moving...

Week 7 [7.12-13.12] The World revolving around Pizza

The World revolving around Pizza Pizza is undoubtedly one of the most famous dishes in the world. This simple and yet delicious dish is nothing more than a pie, a tomato sauce, some cheese, and a personal choice of toppings. -  Photo by Sydney Troxell from Pexels Despite having so few main ingredients, it’s quite difficult to make pizza at home. No to mention making it taste like it came from a restaurant. The genuine, Italian pizza made in a small, family restaurant on the outskirts of Naples is, even more, a rare, legendary, and luxurious commodity only for those who make the effort to travel there. So, how did it all start? The history of pizza The first kind of pizza-like dish dates back to antiquity when Romans made a panis focacius (also known as focaccia - a pie of flat, oven-baked bread) and added a variety of toppings to it. French and Italian archaeologists found traces of oven-baked bread with toppings made by Sardinians over 7,000 years ago. -  Photo by Markus Sp...

Today I would like to ask you to watch this video from the Ted-Ed channel. Do you know more than 1 language? If your answer is yes, then did you know that this may actually result in your brain looking and working differently from your monolingual friends? From this video, you’ll learn how knowing more than 1 language can beneficially impact your brain. Questions: What do you think of the video and the topic discussed? Did you know about that before? How many languages do you know? Which ones? Would you like to learn any other languages?

Week 7 [07.12-13.12] Let's talk about the power of visualization

image source: freepik.com I’m almost sure that by this point almost everybody has already seen this trend a million times online. And it’s not something new. But today I would love to talk with you about the power of visualization, to be more specific, letters to future self. Usually, they are written to be opened once again in a year. Some like to send them further in the future, to a 5-year mark.   This became popular a few years back. I remember the first time I read a letter like that when I was in school. At that time I thought the idea was kind of weird and pointless. A few years later, I’m writing an article to… kind of promote it.  But let me clarify why I think it’s worth trying to write such a letter.  There are a few steps you need to follow when writing a letter to your future self. Firstly, you should be specific when writing down what you want to achieve/change in a year. You need to try and imagine with all the details, goals you’ll achiev...

Week 7 [07.12-13.12] Why Electronic Voting Is A Bad Idea

Tom Scott is an English YouTuber, game show host and web developer. In those two YouTube videos (I recommend the second one) he is going to tell about e-voting. 1. Do you think the e-voting should be more popular in other countries? 2.  Would your older family members be willing to vote that way? 3. What is frightening you the most in e-voting?
