Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] GMO – an unfounded fear or a real danger?

Almost all of the food we consume is genetically modified. People have been doing it by pollination, which means the transfer of pollen from the flower of one plant to the flower of a plant having a different genetic constitution. But recently the genetically modified organisms have become controversial, because now it happens in labs. People tend to fear what they don ’ t know, and being a regular person makes it impossible to investigate dangers connected to genetic modification on our own. We must rely on what we read in newspapers and on the Internet. But, again, we cannot always check whether what we read is true or not. So, what is the problem with the GMO? Is it a good thing or we should definitely stop modifying organisms in labs? What is your attitude towards genetic modifications of food? Please, watch the short video below and share your point of view. Bibliography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TmcXYp8xu4 http://www.dictionary.com/browse/cross-pol

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Meaty names for veggie food?

Whenever I see a new vegan recipe posted by “ regular ” site many of the comments are “ you, vegans, should stop naming your food like meat ” , “ find your own names or return to eating meat if you miss it so much you have to name your food like this ” . Recently the UE passed the regulation forbidding plant milk producers calling their products “ milk ” . As I read on Independent website - “ Purely plant-based products cannot, in principle, be marketed with designations such as ‘ milk ’ , ‘ cream ’ , ‘ butter ’ , ‘ cheese ’ or ‘ yoghurt ’ , which are reserved by EU law for animal products, according to a European Court of Justice judgement ” . So, companies can no longer sell “ soy milk ” , “ rice cream ” or “ plant cheese ” . They decided those names may be misleading for customers. Okay, but why do vegans call their food meat names? Is it really to mislead others? Do they want people to mistake their meat substitutes for real meat and therefore buy more vegan food? Or mayb

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Is it better to have a only child?

Nowadays, people are living faster and faster. They do not have time to rest because they feel the need of constant work. We can say that due to earned money,   we can live better. Is it true, though? It often happens that people do not want to have children because it seems to be very time-consuming. And of course, it is always an additional obligation. Questions: What do you think about your speed of life? Do you have extra time for yourself after school/work? Do you want to have children? If yes, do you think that being an only child is better than having siblings?

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Animal testing, the worst thing in the world?

Animal testing is an extremely controversial topic nowadays. In my opinion it is vital to understand the whole situation and that is why I am writing this article. Everybody should be conscious of that problem. Disadvantages concerning this issue are countless. The most important fact is that animals often suffer and die because of tests. Here are some facts about that: One of records shows that every year more than 87,000 animals are used for testing causes. As a result, only in 2012 about 55,000 mice and 9000 rats were killed or euthanized. A secret film from Wickham Labs: It is a common knowledge that animal testing is expensive, mostly because scientists have to keep pets for several months. Breeding and creating appropriate living conditions are not cheap. Moreover, tests require using certain species of animals - so at this point additional costs should be counted. But still the real cost is not the one that testers pay for their researches, the real one con

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Holding the breath for 17 minutes!

David  Blaine is an illusionist and a showman with a worldwide reputation. And in 2014, after 4 months of training on a special system, he set a world record for holding breath under water: 17 minutes 4 seconds . It's worth saying that Blaine demonstrated more difficult  "tricks". He was buried alive, he "levitated", disappeared, burned, etc. And there are enough documentaries about him already. Personally, I was never a big fan of him, but after this video, I became really interested in his performances. His tricks cannot be called just "street magic". In a very personal speech at the TEDMED conference, he talks about what he went through in order to set a world record and hold the breath under the water for 17 minutes (only three minutes shorter than the performance!), As well as that for him it means his work on the verge of life and death.  If you are  interested, I also recommend seeing a video about how  David Blaine "barfs frogs": ht

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Movies So Bad They Are Good

Yes! He is back. The only guy who made Ed Wood look like a professional. He is a movie star. He is celebrity. And he is Polish! Tommy Wiseau has finally made it. There is a new movie The Disaster Artist coming out that tells the story behind his notoriously bad cult movie The Room. The Room has since its release become known as the "best worst movie ever". The terrible acting, awkward dialog and intensely cringe-worthy scenes made it a living meme. A lot has been said about The Room, but there are still mysteries surrounding the movie that are tearing us apart! Nobody knows who Tommy Wiseau really is, where he comes from and how he got $6 million to fund his movie. Wiseau has been secretive about his background, but according to his former coworker there is a Polish twist in this plot! Tommy is actually Tomek and he comes from Poznan. Have you seen The Room ? If so, what do you think about it? Do you know other bad movie

Week 9 [11.12 - 17.12.2017] Is Scientific Community Accepting of New Ideas?

We all want to believe that science is about pushing the boundaries of knowledge, breaking the status quo and persuading curious ideas, even if the majority of people find them unbelievable. But is it so? There are many cases of scientists who were disgraced and persecuted by the scientific community simply because their findings challenged the already existing beliefs. Humberto Maturana and Lynn Margulis Humberto Maturana is a prominent biologist who studied the examples of symbiosis between organisms: fungi that control the ants (there are farming ants that grow fungi for food) or the parasites that hijack the brains of snails. https://www.une.edu.au/__data/assets/image/0005/24791/leucochloridium-paradoxum.jpg Maturana wondered how is it possible that a symbiosis so complex as the one between a worm and a snail could ever take place? I t occurred it is actually a more general argument about the evolution. What comes first: the design or the applic
