Week 7: 40 years of turning – the Rubik’s Cube

For sure most of you here have seen the Rubik’s Cube and for sure you tried to play with it many times and arrange colors somehow. Even random turns count  J . But you might not know that the Rubik’s Cube celebrates 40 years since its invention this year. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/Rubiks_cube_by_keqs.jpg   Invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik who was a Professor of architecture from Hungary. Originally created to help students understand geometric concepts and 3D space . It was supposed to have only billions of combinations but actually has over 43 quintillion combinations so we can say it is a bit complex :). It took well over a month for Erno to work out the solution to his own puzzle. During his trails with the cube he said one time: “It was wonderful, to see how, after only a few turns, the colors became mixed, apparently in random fashion. It was tremendously satisfying to watch this color parade. Like after a nice walk when you have seen many lovel

Week 7: Copyright trolling

Copyright trolling Copyright trolling is the use of alleged copyright violations in order to extract money from people. This phenomenon is known in many countries, and can take various forms. It is sending mass letters to supposed perpetrators. In copyright trolling are engaged professional law firms. http://di.com.pl/pic/photo/9B50BBEC_7B8E_41D1_9C0B_1B9FFE5C4444_1402399285.jpg The worst in describing trolling is that professional lawyers do not understand or do not want to understand the difference between "prosecution of pirates" and "commercial intimidation of people under the guise of prosecuting pirates." Some publishers and authors also do not want to see these differences. What do they need to start an investigation and engage the police? ·       the name of the stolen fine, for example, the name of the movie ·       public ip address The problem lies in the fact that on the internet it is extremely hard to prove something

Week 7: Syrian hero boy

Syrian hero boy Recently on the internet we can see the heroic attitude of the Syrian boy. The  video has been available from Monday and has been re-uploaded many times Let’s watch:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cceu478rN_c What is your first thought? http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/78997000/jpg/_78997396_2.jpg I have to say you that it is a fake movie and everything was directed. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/79001000/jpg/_79001408_syriaboycrew.jpg The whole idea was created by a Norwegian director s Lars Kleberg, who was inspired by the events taking place currently in Syria. He says he deliberately presented the film as reality in order to generate a discussion about children in conflict zones. "It was not a cynical way to get attention. They had honest motivations," - Lars Kleberg A professional team and young actors, everything closed in a low budget of about £27,000 £. It was filmed in Mal

Week 7: Are you a pack rat or a trash-it-all?

The subject I would like to broach is not really about introducing something new to you. It is a trigger to create a little discussion, to let you take a break and consider your habits from a fresh point of view, maybe even make your own self-confession :) The subject is quite simple; it is about what kind of person you are. Are you a pack rat or a trash-it-all? Do you suffer from ‘save-stuff-itis’ or ‘get-rid-of-it-ness’?  To make the subject more understandable I would like to give some explanation. Pack rat - someone who collects things that they do not need, someone who suffers from save-stuff-itis. Probably his/her room might look like this (in extreme cases). This person is also called a hoarder. http://www.homeorganizeit.com/images/clutteredroom600px.jpg Here is a very interesting 5min documentary episode about clutter. It also shows another big problem that is hyper-consumption. In hyper-consumption society people tend to buy things they don’t need and as

Week 7: Books and magazines going electronic

I really love to read books. Since I was a kid I have read plenty of them and by now this is my best way to chill out and to relax.  The world is changing and brand new technologies are more and more popular. That’s why I want to talk a little about e-readers and electronic books called e-books. http://data1.whicdn.com/images/133696541/large.jpg I know many people who are confused when they hear about reading e-books instead of real, paper books. A funny fact is that at first I had exactly the same opinion about e-books - I love the smell of paper, I like to hold a book in my hand etc. But once I saw my friend’s kindle I totally fell in love with this device :) And not only me - also my mom has one and totally loves it! First of all it is EXTREMELY handy and comfortable to use. I have always read books that are rather thick - I mean more than 500 pages and because of it they are simply heavy (especially when your favourite position to read is lying and keeping a book up

Week 7 (17-23 November): Molecular Gastronomy - Food, Science or Just a Fad?

Food and cooking, just like any other areas of our lives or parts of culture are susceptible to fashion and new trends. For some time now there is a boom of culinary bloggers, vloggers, critics and foodies. They mostly focus on dishes that are traditional or creative and innovative through the unusual addition of new ingredients. Taking a classic recipe and giving it a new twist. Even when looking at the catering and restaurant business in Warsaw you can see how some food trends appear, have their big 5minutes and then slowly fade away. The first example, from the top of my head, would be burgers. There are just so many places that ‘specialize’ in making burgers that I have lost count. Some of them are just plain normal some are really exciting and use ingredients that I would never say that they would work in a burger. Still, burgers are just like a plaid of the culinary fashion, very hip and omnipresent but already fading aw
