Week 6 (10-16 November): The art of disappearing

In my presentation I would like to tell you about an amazing woman whose exhibition we can currently see in Warsaw.   65 years ago her father took part in an unsuccessful assassination on Hitler, which was the reason why she was called “the daughter of a murderer”. Despite her severe childhood, she managed to create her own image as a mysterious girl from the East. She was friends and worked with such great artists as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Michelangelo Antonioni or Richard Avedon, who spoke about her with awe. “She is the most beautiful woman in this world. There is no one like her.   She was able to find herself.” Vera Lehndorff, known as Veruschka, “the face of the sixties”, the first German supermodel, who became a precursor of body-painting.    Veruschka by Franco Rubartelli, Las Vegas, 1967   Veruschka by Richard Avedon, New York, 1967     Her first contact with art was in 1963, when she worked with ...

Herbs and other medical plants have been very useful for human beings since the earliest times. Men have always chosen plants that were both food and cure. Nowadays fashion for herbs has returned. More and more people heal themselves with herbs, they use natural cosmetics or even grow plants on their windowsills.   I would like to present some interesting facts about herbs. Herbs in medicine Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts of natural origin as medicines or health-promoting agents. They were the first painkillers or bandage. People have studied different influence of herbs on the human body and from generation to generation they passed the knowledge, expanding it constantly. Almost every year we hear some new information about using herbs to restore health. Specialists in t...

Week 6 (10-16 November): Calisthenics - It's all about your body

Calisthenics are a form of exercise consisting of a variety of exercises, often rhythmical movements, generally without using equipment or apparatus. They are intended to increase body strength and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one's body weight for resistance. They are usually conducted in concert with stretches. When performed vigorously and with variety, Calisthenics can benefit both muscular and cardiovascular fitness, in addition to improving psychomotor skills such as balance, agility and coordination. The word calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek words kállos (κάλλος), which means "beauty", and sthénos (σθένος), meaning "strength".                                              ...

Week 6 (10-16 November): Why are women joining ISIS?

What is ISIS? The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. To be politically correct, let’s say that is a Jihadist militant group, which wants strict Sharia law, with strong influence on society in Iraq and Syria. Recently they have gained control over a large tract in both countries. They have been committing acts of violence and terrorism. ISIS members are mainly Sunni Arabs, who are the majority on usurped lands. ISIS seems to be the most successful Jihadist group we have observed. Their goal is to create the Islamic State and they are still on a good track. They control oil infrastructures, collect taxes, trade, basically run the country as rich as European ones. On the lands controlled by ISIS there are implemented strict Sharia regulations, which especially affect women. We can see a glimpse of life in such a city thanks to the brave woman who secretly created a video record. At the end of the film we can see the French woman, who is talking wi...
