Week 14: Smart home technologies - concept

Nowadays more and more companies are offering the so called smart home/house services. Today I would like to say a bit about this kind of services or maybe about the concept of Smart housing. Currently technology is a lot cheaper than a few years ago. I am currently working at Orange and a few days ago I had an opportunity to test these new technologies in real environment.  Basic setup contains a few devices responsible for getting information about temperature, humidity, light and a few sensors which should warn us about danger like fire and smoke. There is almost unlimited list of functions you can add to your system but I would like to focus on basic ones. Let’s say our home is turning lights on when we come back home and turn them off when we are going to sleep or when we simply want to. Controlling events is simple and can be done with a simple smartphone or a tablet. Setting humidity and temperature according to predefined settings is only one click action. Then we have f

Week 14: High-speed photography - Water drop photography

Today I would like to tell you about phenomena that are too fast to see, if photographed, give very interesting results, admired in arts, and often used in advertising but at the beginning I must say that the whole project was created by Armand Stańczak, Sergio Cosentino and me of course. We spent with this topic 2 years(finally the project is done) or even more so I hope it will be at least “ok” for you J Water drop photography is one of examples of events that could not be seen at all without a camera. High speed photography allows capturing such fast and amazing phenomena. There exist tools for high speed photography and, in particular, dedicated tools to photograph droplets of water, or milk, or other liquids but I will tell about tools and hardware in the second or third part of this presentation. History High-speed photography has now about 127 years and it all started with photography made in 1887. Someone captured shock wave which is generated by a bullet; these

Week 14: Time management

http://static.flickr.com/56/193033180_8f1a1040d5.jpg Time management Today world is filled with meetings and schedules. We live in a hurry to move forward. How do we can cope with this? How can we manage our time which is more precious than anything else? I will share with You methods I use to manage my professional and private time. No need to worry. Deadline is tomorrow... In my opinion one of the problems in work is tight plan of completing given tasks. It is hard to survive when you are not able to say "no" to your boss and You start doing something new and ongoing, previous tasks are delayed. Problem happens when deadline for them is coming because You leave everything you have been doing and finish them. Usually it requires staying after hours to finish them. Quality of such work in most cases is very low and you must improve it which takes additional time. As a result of such actions You are physically and mentally worn out. In short time perspect

Week 14 : Paper gold.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs41/f/2009/036/7/7/Sonic_comic_collection_part_1_by_Sonikdude750.jpg Paper gold. Everyone I know collected anything as a child. I also collected comic books, Pokemon cards and many more. When I was child I did not care if my great collection will gain value. I treasured it a lot but I took many pictures of my Pokemon cards before I gave it all to orphanage because I did not find joy in it. Few years later  I checked Pokemon cards price and I made list of cards I had. I was shocked. It turns out that my collection was worth seven hundred dollars. I was so amazed about that discovery that I made up my mind to start collecting things again. I chose Magic: the Gathering cards which I played at that time as well as pen & paper role-playing games. Beginning  I was on semi-pro level in Magic: the Gathering environment. I played good with medium results on competitive scene in Warsaw. I had small binder of cards but I used only to trade for more e

Week 14 : Finding job in Poland

( http://www.accounting-and-bookkeeping-tips.com/accounting-articles/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/hire-me.jpg  ) Finding job in Poland – true story. Most of us, people attending this course are working. But how do we as young people start our careers? I would like to describe my experiences finding a job in our beautiful country. “We will call You back” syndrome. I started searching for job in 2010. I was still on bachelor’s degree studies. I looked for work I would suitable for me – in terms of my practical skills and in sectors and positions I would learn and improve them. I remember my first recruitment call and job interview. I was very excited and I prepared a lot for it. I talked with HR department staff in Orange for six-month paid internship in Databases. I answered lots of questions, pass few tests and as a result I only get one simple sentence: “We will call You back” said with a smile. I waited for a positive feedback ( I thought it would be positive because I f
