Week 11 (01.06-07.06) Imigrants

For the last few weeks  there has been many discussions among politicians from many different European Union countries about immigrants from Northern Africa. Poland will be probably forced to accept a few thousand people from that unstable region of the world. http://i.wp.pl/a/f/jpeg/32172/migracje_infografika_poprawka2_wp.jpeg Do we know who those people are ? Could we be sure that terrorists won’t take advantage of placing their “spies” in our country and in future make terrorists attack ? Is there any possibility for those immigrants to integrate with our community and to be useful for our country ? In my opinion we should answer those questions before even starting discussions about the number of admitted immigrants. http://static.polityka.pl/_resource/res/path/89/7a/897a6e87-280a-40e2-b1b4-e7879c3589ad_900x The most popular way for immigrants to get to Europe is across the Mediterranean Sea. They  pay gangsters for slots on primitive boats, which trans...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) The fall of Detroit

As some of you may know - 2 years ago first US city became bankrupt and withdrew  to pay its liabilities. It was a huge shock for investors and Detroit's creditors, because everyone knew that the city's economical situation wasn't perfect, but no one expected such a move. Detroit was one of the richest cities in the United States after II World War till the end of the70s. It was home for huge automotive corporations such as General Motors, Chrysler and Ford. Nowadays Detroit is a poor city with one of the biggest crime rates in the country.  In 1950 Detroit had 1.85mln citizens, in 2010 only 0.7mln, in 2013 it became the first city in US, which filed for bankruptcy. http://www.frontpagemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/detroit-fight-shows-why-public-pensions-are-bound-for-problems1-450x337.jpg   What were the reasons of that fall ? It’s really hard to choose one key reason, because there were a lot of them. Some of the most important are deindustr...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) The exotic fruits of Poland

Don't take it too seriously. The title is just humorous. It refers to imported fruits from exotic countries. We all like to eat. We all have to eat. We all eat differently. Each one of us has a tendency to eat particular type of food. The nature, our organism, our biology, the DNA , defines what we like and what we dislike in our daily diets. These preferences do not only come from the biological definition. In other words we also choose what to eat based on some other complex decisions. In the case of selecting the right foods to eat the culture we are in plays a major role within the social aspect of our life. Speaking of the culture, it varies in as little as in different countries, but there also exist the very best practices being practiced and applied by individuals all over the world - such as eating healthy and staying fit.          There are so many tropical foods that I have limited my ...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) Do Apps Help You or Just Waste Your Time?

From the minute we wake up, we depend highly on our phone. We use it to check the time, set our alarm clock, upload pictures on Instagram, or post a status update on Facebook. In a society like ours, it is almost impossible to be in a public area and see an individual that is not straining his neck to look down at his mobile device.        Smart phones are getting more and more popular due to the number of applications that the user can download to make his phone work accordingly to his needs. Some of these apps are used for productivity purposes and they are supposed to save the user’s time and energy. But is this really what applications do for us?        Apps demand our time and energy. Our phones basically control us. Users believe that thanks to productivity applications they can better sort out their schedules to allow for improved time management, but really all they do is wasting more time. In the time it takes to find ...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) Does keeping a messy desk make people more creative?

Scientists have found out that being surrounded by clutter can promote creative thinking and stimulate new ideas. In contrast, working at a clean desk may promote healthy eating, generosity and conventionality.        The research was conducted by a psychologist Professor Kathleen Vohs and fellow researchers at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Each subject of experiments was assigned to either a messy or a tidy room. The whole study was composed of several tests.        For example, the subjects were told to imagine that a ping-pong factory needed to think of new uses for ping-pong balls and to write down as many ideas as they could. The subjects in both types of rooms came up with about the same number of ideas, which meant they put about the same effort into the task. Answers given by "tidy room" subjects included using ping-pong balls for beer pong and they were rated low in creativity. "Messy room" subjects’ answers ...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) Movies

Nowadays the art of movies is slowly disppearing. American high-budget films have taken over almost the whole movie industry. Small cinemas are yet closed, high-street cinemas like Helios or Multikino are on the top now. People have already forgotten that not everyting that is mainstream, is the only way to do so. There is plenty of interesting  events concerning movies. Future Shorts - 22nd May, Kino LAB, Warsaw Future Shorts organise such events all around the Europe and they still boom. It consists of a few short, mainly low-budget movies, so together it lasts like an usual film. It's really interesting as movies presented are very diversified so the viewer leave the festival totally absorbed with thoughts. At the end of the display, the viewers decide which movie was the best. Although the spring season of the future shorts is gone, it's regulary organised in Poland so nothing is lost. https://www.shortoftheweek.com/?s=Campbell%20Hooper Euroshorts - sho...

Week 11 (01.06-07.06) Running

Recently, running has become a trend. It's enough to get out on the street to notice at least few runners, no matter if you're in Warsaw or in small village somwhere in Mazury. Nowadays runners are everywhere. What have changed that people have decided to leave their couches and start doing sports? What encourage these people to leave their warm beds every early morning, to put their training shoes after busy day at work, just in order to run a few kilometers? What can be that tempting in sweating like a pig and spending several dozen of minutes running? Below you'll find some of the stimulus, and trust me, there's something more in running than people would expect. Fit body . Let's begin with the obvious part. People mainly start running in order to lose some weight. That's the easiest method - the fastest, and the cheapest. You don't need a lot of equipment at the beginning, your legs are enough. With time when you get known runners...
