week 12: Warner Bros.

I think everyone knows the logo of Warner Bros. and has watched many of its movies. However, do you know its history? I will try to tell you about it. This legendary film company was built by four brothers from Poland. Hirsz, Aaron, Szumel and Izaak Wonsal, who are known better as Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warners. These uneducated Jews from Mazowsze have revolutionized the cinema industry and created one of the biggest film studio in the world.  [photo from:  http://interactive.wxxi.org/files/images/highlights/WarnerBros.JPG ] Warner’s always liked business. In 1903 year they borrowed a thousand dollars and bought a kinescope and a projector made by Thomas Edison. To get the loan they had to give Bob’s horse and their father‘s gold watch as a collateral. They were travelling around cities and screening „The Great Train Robbery“ by Edwin’s Porter’s. This way they earned their first dollars. Later they invested in re

week 12: Love is all around

It seems to me that everyone has a tradition of doing some special things with friends just before Christmas, like meeting to have a herring, looking for presents, going skating or cooking Christmas’ specialties. In my case, we are baking gingerbread, drinking mulled wine and watching „Love Actually”.   [photo from:  http://www.funfitgirl.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/love-actually.jpg ] www.facebook.com/ZawszePrzedGwiazdkaOgladamLoveActually „Love Actually” is a typical British romantic comedy about the time before Christmas. It consists of ten stories about love. The main characters experience the power of love: the joy of being in mutual love or the despair of hopeless love, or the feeling of loneliness. The story proves that love leads our life. The movie is on the list of movies, I believe, that must be seen before Christmas. It makes me laugh to tears, especially dancing Hugh Gran

week 12: Martin Scorsese promotes the Polish cinema

The Polish cinema is in the phase of its renaissance. There are many Polish movies made these days, which are of „Hollywood quality”: interesting, up-to date and well-told stories, with terrific performances of actors. Good examples of such movies would be: “Ida” directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, „Papusza” by Krzysztof and Joanna Krauze or „Płynące wieżowce” by Tomasz Wasilewski, to name a few. However, abroad the Polish cinema has been appreciated for a long time. Martin Scorsese, an outstanding movie director, is one of its fans. Below you can read his opinions.  [photo from: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhcuvBZ5hjUGXam2y-aGSa29nH9KpKi3jcHeZYaYuVNQ4GB-RbOC1cCuosrt0WqrBXS49kPcIsKZ1QUzzYAj64ZNHk4B9IXTAbzEgAGf4wir8292db8n0fsrmlnY6FOF0S4vHW3vXWxZc/s1600/600full-martin-scorsese+%281%29.jpg] „Polish cinema has showed me a good way of telling stories, which existence I had not anticipated. I must

Week 11: Piracy

What is Piracy Media piracy is a activity involving illegal copying and using computers programs, music, films, video games etc. The term “piracy” should influence the awareness and moral judgments of users, convincing them the illegal download is just as bad as attacking and robbing the ships from goods. (http://wondergressive.com/hollywood-pirates-hollywood/) History of Piracy About ten years ago we could buy counterfeit CDs on the “Stadium of Decade” or another market place ( music, software for 20-30 zł). Then we could even record first CDs at home, but it was very expensive. After a   few years came the golden era of CD piracy with prevalence of recorders CD-R/RW (everyone was able to buy a recorder and they were attached to PCs). Next was invented a DVD player with 8.5 GB, which could record about 7 common CDs. (http://proline.pl/?p=MSI+DH-24AWSH) After CD/DVD piracy came the internet piracy, which was a huge technological step forward and became the
