Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Can two strangers fall in love with 36 questions?

I recently stumbled upon this video which I found super interesting.  Apparently asking 36 specific questions and four minutes of eye contact is a recipe for falling in love between two strangers. See for yourselves:  Here's a link to the set of all 36 questions: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/11/fashion/no-37-big-wedding-or-small.html Questions: 1. Do you believe asking this set of questions can actually lead to falling in love with someone? 2. Would you be willing to try it with someone?  3. Do you believe in love at love at first sight?

Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Startling history of piercing art

The history of piercing art probably goes back as the oldest human mummy and has taken many weird but surprising turns along the way. Even if you don’t have any piercings, there is a massive chance you probably know someone who has them. Nowadays, it’s a very common beauty trend and even sometimes a form of self expression which adds to personality. Piercing has been definitely around for thousands of years. But where did it come from? Why do we still do it? Actually, piercings are one of the oldest body modifications known to our human race. In very ancient civilizations, scientists found some records of many different kind of piercings, from noses to ears and shockingly; even nipples! Even before people were able to write, some piercings were a sign of a social class belongingness. Surprisingly, the oldest human who was discovered shows an evidence of an ear piercing, and it is estimated that he died 5300 years ago! Piercing art carries a huge deal of c

Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Living on your own

2 moths ago I finally moved out from my family home and rent small flat with my girlfriend. I was a bit hasitant at the begining, but overtime I think that was a good decision. It is widely known that you should at first try to live togheter to see if you are able to spend the rest of your life with that person.  There are plenty of articles with tips for young couples who decided to take a next step e.g. For me that was easy probably because we are togheter about 6 years and we basically know eachother very well. Taking the next step as moving out is a bit risky as everyone has theirs own habits, especially women tries to convince partner to adapt to theirs rules, it is important not to lose your temper ( tip for you guys :D ) ! I am joking, the most important thing are compromises , you need to settle down specific rules and both of you should obey them. Second thing is to figure out your finances . For example   we have create an bank account and we treat it as ou

Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] The world's oldest living things

I found this topic very interesting, did you imagine that there are that old, natural, amazing things among us ? Rachel Sussman shows photographs of the world's oldest continuously living organisms from 2000 year old coral to an over half milion year old bacteria found on Siberia. Please watch this short movie and answer couple of questions below: Did you know about any of those species ? Do you know about any other old plant/animal still living on earth ? Are you even interested in this kind of interesting facts ?

Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Bees are dying

From the beginning of the 1990s, beekeepers noticed massive disappearances of bees, especially during the winter months. Since those times the situation has become even worse: about 4 thousand species of honeybees have become extinct. In 2006 this phenomenon was named “colony collapse syndrome”. Nobody knows exactly why bees are dying. Source: https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/why-do-bees-make-honey.html “If temperatures on Earth rise as much as climatologists predict, then the bees will be on the verge of extinction because they run into their physiological limits. Bees will completely disappear in the warmer regions of their habitat. Such a prospect is sobering and frightening us " said Paul CaraDonna of Northwestern University in Evanston. In recent years, scientists have recorded a rapid decline in the number of domestic and wild bees on all continents except Antarctica, where they do not exist. Over the past five to ten years, the population of wild bees has

Week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Information Storage in DNA

Today people don’t feel a lack of space to store their information. We have cloud technologies with billions of terabytes of free space where we can store our photos, videos, important documents, etc, while 50 years ago people had to choose what information was important enough to save it on those huge machines that had only a few kilobytes of memory. Today we can store any information we want not worrying about its size or importance, but there is another problem that most users don’t see: huge data centres which cost a lot and take a lot of space. That is how big data has become a big problem. Scientists found out an alternative of hard drives: data storage in DNA. This idea is described in the video below: What do you think about an idea of storing data in DNA? Do you think that people are playing God synthesizing the most important thing of every organism just for storing files like pictures, images, etc? Do you see any problem of using DNA storage in our everyda

week 9 [20-26.05.2019] Each device has a life cycle

Each device has a life cycle When buying a new electronic device, a smartphone, camera or printer, we start a certain cycle. The video presents one of the stages of this cycle. Actually its end or the beginning if we look at it from the point of view of recovering raw materials. I mentioned the cycle because the Polish people also participate in it. I do not mean consumers. Looking at the video, I feel that these people are being used in some way. It seems to me that in a different way but in Poland too, we have a problem with it. We produce in China, we utilize it in Africa by getting rid of the problem. And what about Poland? It seems to me that in Poland we do office work (administration, programming etc.) for these companies for much lower rates than in Europe. In Warsaw, a skyscraper is being built one after another. I think in some sense we're Chinese underpaid office workers.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mleQVO1Vd1I 1.       Have you heard about this typ
