Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] - India, the world of contrasts…

We live in times when equality and tolerance are very important. We try to endure all divisions, but are we sure that we can fight this everywhere? All we have to do is to get on the plane and after 7 hours we can find ourselves in country which have a completely different reality… On the one hand, we associate India with the colorful Holi, Bollywood, elephants or Taj Mahal, and on the other hand, it is a place where the caste division of the society has been functioning so far. Probably each of you has met with the concept of "caste", which is the most controversial aspect of this culture and theology, I'd like to introduce you to this culture in more detail.“Caste is a form of social stratification characterized by endogamy, hereditary transmission of a style of life which often includes an occupation, ritual status in a hierarchy, and customary social interaction and exclusion based on cultural notions of purity and pollution.”Hinduism divides Indian so...

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] What you know about ... Beatbox?

The imitating of sound had its origin in tribal music. Later people were singing a cappella and using their mouth to imitate the instrument, because they hadn’t got money to real instruments. They imitated mainly drums and bass to make not only rhythm, but all melody. So that’s why even w ell-known performers used this technique to create their songs e.g. ‘Don’t worry be happy’ (1969), ‘That would be something’ (1967) or ‘Billie Jean’ (1982). And how it looks now? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNZBSZD16cY Questions: Do you think that Beatbox is a kind of music or just a ‘noise’? Would you ever like to listen a story where background and narration are created by a Beatboxer? (Like in the video) Did you realize that a Beatboxer can imitate so many sounds and instruments? Have you ever seen this technology which he uses in the video?

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] From movie to reality…

Probably each of us saw at least a fragment of a movie, which was based on the comic book. This is only fiction, which is supposed to entertain us. This fiction shouldn’t affect reality. No matter that’s a hero or a villain, Deadpool, Batman, Ironman, aliens or princess. We are happy when we are watching the movie (or not). We are talking about it with friends and we forget about it. Because it was just a movie. But have you ever wondered what would happen if some of these films moved to reality? And what about Joker. Todd Phillips presents us a whole new picture of Joker. We don’t recognize him as a created character. Every change takes place before our eyes. It's not like Joker from ‘Dark Knight”. We don't see a psychopath with scars on his face. He don’t get pleasure from confusion, psychological games or just killing (at the beginning of course). The film begins in Gotham where there is a crisis. We meet Artur, who has problems and begins to kill in self-defense. Then it i...

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] The downfall of WeWork

In less than a year WeWork went from one of the most valued startups of all time (47 billion dollars valuation) to  losing ¾ of its value, desperately needing another 8 billion bailout from SoftBank (it’s biggest investor) just to avoid bankruptcy. WeWork is a coworking company, renting hot-desks, private desks, dedicated offices etc. to startups and primarily young entrepreneurs. It was founded by Adam Neumann, who recently was fired from his job as a CEO of WeWork, who tried to sell WeWork not just as an office space, but as a community of young minds, working together, networking and building lifechanging solutions. His vision quickly drew in a lot of investors to invest in his company, one of them was Masayoshi San, founder and CEO of Softbank, that gave them a valuation of 20 billion dollars which brought WeWork to a whole other level. In 2018 Softbank planned to make a 16 billion dollars investment which would  give them a controlling stake in the company, ultimat...

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] No, not all popular music sounds the same.

A very common opinion is that all pop music sounds the same. I think it's worth taking a closer look and see how this genre has changed over the years, even if you don't listen to this type of music on a daily basis. I invite you to view the analysis prepared by misteramazing. Questions: 1. What do you think about the analysis? 2. Another very common opinion is that "Everything has already been played." (not only in pop music, but among all genres of music). Do you agree with that? Why? or Why not? 3. Is it good that music evolves and changes over time?

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] VR for Business

VR technology has been developing for a very long time. Its origins date back to the early 1970s, when NASA began experimenting with head-mounted displays. They used them, among others, for various simulations and trainings. It wasn't until the 1990s that this technology hit the entertainment sector. Sega Mega Drive with Vr headset and Nintendo Virtual Boy were released. Over the years, this technology has developed rapidly, but the breakthrough was 2010 when the first Oculus Rift prototype was shown (made by 18(!) years old Palmer Luckey in his parents' garage), people loved it and supported the kickstarter campaign. Then Facebook bought Oculus company and is strongly developing its products. Other companies such as Google, HTC, Xiaomi or Sony have also released their googles. In addition to computer games and digital entertainment, there are many other applications for VR. The most popular are: - Architecture and urban design - Digital marketing - Education - Mi...

Week 8 [02.12 – 08.12.2019] What our body language can say about us

Social interactions have always been interesting for me. Since childhood I was wondering how others see me as a person. Does everybody else think that I am shy or confident? Can anybody sense when I am lying or when I truly believe what I am saying? It is truly amazing how much  we can tell about others’ state of mind just by observing their body language. In this video Amy Cuddy explains the secrets of body language https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_may_shape_who_you_are?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare Questions: 1. Have you been aware that so much depends on our body language? 2.Do you agree that our body language can shape who we are? 3. Do you pay attention to other people’s body language?
