Week 9 (1-7.12.2014) Internet television

Internet television is a hot topic nowadays. It appears everywhere: in the traditional TV (“Hey, just after my program go to www.something and watch the rest of the episode”), in ads in magazines:“New episode of …. TV premiere: This Sunday. Watch today on www.somethingelse ”. http://findingmyinnerbombshell.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/img_0933.jpg I believe everyone with the Internet access did already watch some kind of TV show on the Internet. In my opinion we will be soon trying to get rid of TV and everything you want to watch will be available on the Internet, from legal sources, of course.

Week 9 (1-7.12.2014) Coaching

What do you think about people who teach other people how to live, how to be successful? I used to think that it’s some kind of a joke. How can another person even think that he can teach me a better life? http://www.studiohajo.nl/wpcontent/uploadedImages/2012/11/nextcoachcover.gif However , observing that “coaches” are earning more and more (source: http: //www.forbes.com/sites/russprince/2012/12/03/howlifecoachesbecomeverywealthy / ) and becoming popular people, I have decided to give this topic another look. In the past I only heard about coaches from across the ocean. Surprisingly, this ‘fashion’ came to Poland and we have our own coaches like Mateusz Grzesiak. He’s 34 years old and he teaches people how to be successful. Sounds weird? I did also think that it’s some kind of scam, just the way to make people pay money. He’s only 34. He’s just a little bit older than me and you. Well, maybe he remembers communism but… did he learn anything special living in ‘old times’?

Week 9 (1-7.12.2014) Running the (ultra)marathon

As I have noticed, many of you are active and like sports. I'm sure that you have heard about marathons, but have you heard about ultramarathons ?     The word of marathon comes from ancient times, from a Greek messenger -Pheidippides. The legend of this messenger said that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon back to Athens. He was supposed to deliver a victory message to announce that the Persians had been defeated. After running 42.195 km without stopping, right before his death he exclaimed 'we have won'. The current idea of marathon was presented by Michel Breal for the purpose of the first modern Olympics in 1896.     Ultramarathons are something more than the mythical marathon. Ultra distance run is any event which involves running, walking on distances longer more than the distance of a regular marathon. The most common distances are 50km and 100km, but there are many far longer. Ultramarathons are often held in very harsh conditions, e.g. in the mountai

Week 9 (1-7.12.2014) Neuromarketing - hopes and doubts

Perhaps many of you have heard about ‘Pepsi & Coke Challenge’, - the simple experiment in which there were two taste tests — one blind and one in which subjects knew which beverage was which. During the experiment researchers observed the corresponding brain activity. If volunteers were unaware of which brand’s beverage they were drinking, the fMRI showed more activation in a basic “reward centre” which is located in the prefrontal cortex. The winner was Pepsi, as it tasted better for the tester. However, when the person knew which drink was which, the winner was Coke. In this case the fMRI scans showed more brain activation in centres for memory and emotions [3]. So how is it possible that even though people prefer the taste of Pepsi, Coke dominates the market ? The answer is neuromarketing .     Generally speaking neuromarketing is an emerging branch of neuroscience. Wikipedia defines it in more detail as ‘a new field of marketing research that studies consumers’ sensorimo
