Week 3 [09-15.11.20] The Most Spectacular Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Almost all events including the Summer Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo were cancelled or postponed due to the quarantine.  I hope it will be held in 2021. But now, I suggest remembering the last few spectacular Olympic opening ceremonies. As it is a chance for the host to show its history and culture to the world, every country tries to do their best to impress viewers.

2008 BEIJING OLYMPIC GAMES

Beijing Olympic opening ceremony was regarded as one of the best in 2008. It had two segments: Brilliant Civilization and Glorious Era. The main director of the Olympic ceremony was the famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou. He is known for the films "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers". 2008 musicians performed at the beginning of the ceremony. There was also a roll of rice paper measuring 20 * 11 m, which weight was 800 kg. About 4 billion people around the world watched the opening ceremony.

2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPIC GAMES

Four Indian tribes, who were living in Canada took part in the ceremony. After singing the national anthem, four totems appeared on the stadium. People performed on the stage presenting national dances.

Then Brian Adams and Nelly Furtado sang the song "Beat the Drum". The viewers beat the small drums. After that, a huge ice bear (20 mh) was rolled out to the stage. It is one of the symbols of Canada.

2012 LONDON OLYMPIC GAMES

The London opening ceremony was called " Isles of Wonder ". It showed the history of England from the agricultural system to the industrial revolution. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Games. The television broadcast of the opening ceremony started with a video with James Bond, played by the actor Daniel Craig, and the Queen. At the end of the video, the actors jumped from the helicopter using parachutes and flew over the arena of the Olympic Stadium. The famous British actor Rowan Atkinson was among them. It was thrilling and spectacular.

The opening ceremony of the London Olympics was accomplished with colourful fireworks and a performance by Paul McCartney.

More 42 md were spent on this astonishing ceremony.

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

The ceremony presented the history of Brazil, its culture and landscapes. Some parts of the ceremony were about environmental protection and ecology.

Despite the low budget of the ceremony (only 10% of the total ceremonial budget for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London), the media highly appreciated the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro with its appeal to the environmental problems.

2018 PYEONGCHANG OLYMPIC GAMES

The official symbol of the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang was the tiger Suhoran. It is a symbol of trust, protection, and strength. The children carried it out to the stage. They got into the world of a fairy tale where they met blue dragons, butterflies, black snakes. The journey was accompanied by the performance of folk dances.

Questions:

1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

1.
I think from the opening ceremonies listed above I've only watched the London one from 2012. The latter editions of the olympics I've only watched the actual disciplines.
I've enjoyed it quite a bit and it must've been spectacular to witness this live and not in front of a TV.

2.
I really like to watch athletics.

3.
Recently because of the pandemic I'm only doing some gravel bicycling and calisthenics.
1. Yes, I watched all the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. What do I like the most? I cannot answer this question because I like everything about such ceremonies.

2. I think I like athletics the most of all Olympic sports.

3. I love swimming. Before the pandemic, I used to swim a lot in the pool. Now, unfortunately, everything is closed and there is no opportunity to swim.

Thank you for your comment! Yeah, I also want to watch Olympic opening ceremony live one day. If the ceremony looks grandiose on TV, then I can imagine what emotions will be sitting in the stadium. Hope, in the nearest future the pandemic will over and it became possible.

@Igor_Goryszewski
Hello Igor!
How about the Winter Olympic Games? Do you like to watch sports like hockey, bobsleigh or maybe biathlon?
I share your love for swimming, I have also gone swimming since I was 8 years old. Do you train on your own or with a coach?
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

The 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony is the one that stole my heart when I saw it at the age of 15. I was astonished by how many amazing artists they were able to invite and coordinate to perform together on one evening. Basically the most important musical (and not only) artists from Great Britain were performing together. That was simply beautiful.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

Usually when it comes to championships I am not much of a fan of any sports but everytime when FIFA or UEFA championships are being held I turn into the biggest football fan. I just love that atmosphere and emotions of watching the best of the best compete. Watching matches in which Polish Team is playing always gets on my emotions.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I am not much of a sports fan but I like to watch some sports from time to time. Football is not the only sport that I enjoy. I also like watching boxing fights. Klitshko versus Joshua and Tyson Fury versus Wilder are probably my favourite ones.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

That's how I've seen the Olympic Games a couple of times, so I've seen the Olympic Games open. My favorite opening was in 2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

I used to train swimming for many years and watch all competitions related to this sport. Nowadays I am no longer interested in swimming or training, so I do not watch competitions anymore.
Sometimes I watch soccer matches if the teams I am interested in play, or if they are the matches of the Polish team.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I don't practice any sport professionally, but I try to lead an active lifestyle. During vacations, I run a lot and play football with my friends. In the winter I play tennis with a friend. Tennis is currently my favorite sport.
Hello Anastasia! I enjoy your presentation! It was truly interesting.
The Olympic games are an amazing event. It shows that the whole world can gather together to celebrate the beauty of the sport.
I watched the Olympic opening once. During the winter Olympic games in Vancouver Canada. I remember there was a giant snow bear covered with lights and effective flowing icicles. I watched these games because of Justyna Kowalczyk. She won the gold prize.
Besides winter sports I enjoy watching ice skatings, swimming (specifically the male category), and equestrian.
I’m not a big fan of sports. But if I have to choose something I would say trekking and horse riding.
I would like to try climbing! I’m a big fan of documentaries about climbing.

Hi @Piotr_Malanowski!
My favourite Olympic opening ceremony is also the one in London. Do you remember Mr Bean`s performance? Rowan Atkinson can make everyone smile without saying a word!
Of course, football is the most popular kind of sport to watch.

@Mateusz_Cwiklinski
Hello Mateusz! Thanks for comments.
I used to swim with a coach too and like watching swimming races. Did you have any favourite swimmers? In childhood, I liked the American swimming team after the London 2012 Olympics.
Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin and of course Michael Phelps.

@Justyna_Wozniak
Hi Justyna! Thank you for your answers! I am very pleased that you liked a presentation 😃
Ice skating is my favourite kind of winter sports. Which ice skaters do you consider one of the best?
Wow! Horse riding is cool. It associates for me with the atmosphere of royal England. How long do you do this sport?
Piotr Góralski said…
1. I watched the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and enjoyed it very much. The show with Mr. Bean was very entertaining and fitted well with the ceremony. I think I liked the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games the most.
2. I enjoy watching many sports events covering many different sports. It seems to me that I like to watch the Olympic Games the most due to the very wide variety of sports disciplines which we can follow. I also like to follow the events in which Poles take part, if there is no Pole in the competition, they are indifferent to me.
3. I am an IT programmer, I do not have time for sports :) Honestly, I plan to do some sport after graduation, when I find a job and there will be more free time. I think that I will sign up for martial arts because you can get in good shape and you can feel safer on a daily basis.
When it comes to articles, this week is honestly not my lucky one, as I do not have anything interesting to say. I was trying to comment on posts about computer games which I do not play, so now I will try to comment on a post about sports, which I do not do.

I have never watched the Olympic opening ceremonies. Honestly, I have no idea when and where it takes place. Sometimes I see on the internet some graphic designs for the Olympics and this is when I get interested in it.

I do not watch or like to watch any sports championship, I find it really boring. When I was younger I really liked to watch Real Madrid football games, when my dad told me that Cristiano Ronaldo was playing. I guess, 9 years old me had a crush on him.

I guess, it is quite obvious that I am not really into sports. I like to walk, ride a bicycle, roller skate or swim. Since the pandemic has begun, I have started going for long walks, sometimes even 25 kilometers a day. I also ride a bike a lot. It all actually started with riding a bike, when one day I thought that maybe I will just walk on foot the route I usually ride by bike, and this is how I started walking so much. When it comes to roller skates, I used to go on nightskating, where you skate through Warsaw during the night. The routes were usually something about 30 kilometers. Unfortunately, I had a wrist operation and could not skate for a year, and then a pandemic happened. The last sport I really like is swimming. I really love it, but I also have very difficult to maintain, frizzy hair which get destroyed by chlorine, that’s why I stopped going to the swimming pool. The other reason was the price - the swimming pool right next to my house charges you 16 zł per hour, which is 32 zł per 2 hours! That’s crazy!

Good evening @Piotr_Góralski and thank you for your comments!
Have you already done martial arts, maybe in childhood? Or are you going to start now? And which kind of martial arts ao you want to try?

@Magdalena_Pierzchała
Hello Magdalena! Thank you for the comments!
Despite the fact that you didn`t have anything interesting to say, your answers are the biggest. Hope, you will find interesting topics for you, this week just 4 presentations among 14 are about sport and video games :)
You also can walk 25 kilometres to the cheaper swimming pool and combine your favourite activities. 🙃
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?
To be honest i didn't or maybe i saw some parts when i was younger but i don't remember that.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?
I don't like to watch sports i prefer to do something instead of watching this. For example soccer games in TV are boring for me. I can only watch this if i placed bets if i didn't there is no option. Maybe with one exception which is MMA - UFC/KSW.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
Yes i like sport. In last time because of covid i only train in home (typical workout) and sometimes jogging. Previously i was doing different things but i like a lot sports e.g. kick-boxing or brasilian ju-jitsu, swimming, soccer or bike ridding. My friend convinced me to tenis but we didn't go there yet.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

Rather not, perhaps I could have seen some sneak peaks from TV. This kind of events aren't really my thing but assuming reactions of lots of people every of those event has some unique value.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

None of them because as well as in the previous question sport isn't my piece of bread to me.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

Some time ago I was really into tenis which gave me the fine portion of physical activity few times a week as well as it was giving me a lot fun
1.Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?
Yes, I watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, each of them is a one-off journey through the culture of the country that hosts the Olympics. It is worth watching, because everyone wants their performance to be remembered as the best. The opening ceremony of the games that I liked the most was the opening of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

2.Which sports championship do you like to watch?
My favorite thing is watching the European Cup or the World Cup. The championship itself is a period of about 3 weeks, during which you can watch football matches every day. Of course, the coolest championships are those played by Poles.

3.Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
I try to be an active person. I run, exercise in the gym, swim, ski and bike. However, I love playing soccer. It is currently my favorite sport. You could say that I am an amateur player. Together with my friends we play in the amateur team of the 6-person league. I recommend you, really cool emotions.

Hi Anastasiia Bida, I have been practicing mixed martial arts and boxing for several months. I think I would continue to practice these sports.

During each Olympics, you can watch many excerpts from the opening ceremony on TV or the Internet. It’s not easy to follow each of them live due to the time difference. In full and actual duration, I only watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics 2012 in London. It’s a huge event not only in sports, but also in art. The combination of music, light, dance and other performances is a masterpiece.

I'm not a big fan of watching sports on TV. However, if I had to choose what attracts my attention the most during the Olympics, it’s definitely the relay race. After all, these are not ordinary runs or sprints, but teamwork.

I’ve never done any kind of sport on a regular basic, I only exercise for my health. Especially now, when I spend a lot of time at home and at my desk, I make sure that stretching is an integral part of every day.

How long have you played tennis? And are you planning to continue someday?

Hi @ Anna_Żak and thank you for the answers! 🙂
Summer Olympics 2012 opening ceremony is also my favourite. As it was held in London it was a convenient time to watch it live in Europe. Do you remember promo videos starring Queen Elizabeth?
Do you mean relay race on a treadmill or in a pool?

I wasn't interested in Olympic Game that much before reading your article. After watching all the provided videos at least I can say that they have outstanding opening ceremonies. That was pleasure to watch.

In my opinion the best one was Summer Olympics 2012 opening ceremony. The scale of that event were enormous. Especially I like the part with Mr. Bean.

I like watching Champions League or European League, because Im quite interested in football.

I used to play football (amateur level) and some tennis when I was younger.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

I watched the Olympic opening ceremonies in 2018. It was something new, but what impressed me was the drones. Creating animations from drones is something that makes an impression.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

I like watching athletics and swimming. Swimming especially as we had an Otylia Jędrzejczak

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I have been playing football since I was little. I used to train in clubs. Now I only play as an amateur with my friends
I watched the London opening as well as the Sochi opening when it was live broadcasted. The other ones I saw later on the Internet. All of them are great and unique, but I think Atkinson's performance was simply brilliant. I also liked a little blooper when one of the Olympics circles didn't open on Sochi's opening.

I like to watch running competitions as well as swimming and canoeing.

I used to take part in running competitions, but my results were average and I decided to quit. Maybe I should have trained more? Now I like to casually swim and ride a bike.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

Unfortunately, I haven't ever watched it. I am not a big fan of the Olympics, but when it comes to watching it, I prefer the final stages where Polish sportsmen are fighting for a win.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

Mainly football, but when the Polish team or sportsmen play and have a chance to achieve something big I can watch it, no matter what kind of sport it is.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I played football for 10 years, now I don't have one main discipline. Sometimes I run, sometimes I swim or play football, it depends on what I want to do.

1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?
Yeah, I watched few of them but I don't really think that I have my favourite one. Every one has it's own, nice atmosphere depending on the country it's in.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?
I like to watch football and volleyball the most.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
I used to play table tennis a lot but now I don't really have time for it. Nowadays my favourite activities are riding a bike in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.
My favorite opening ceremony of the Olympics was with Mr. Beans. A great musical joke, with taste. I always liked to watch the Olympics for 1 reason - I love ski jumping and then I can enjoy it. This is my favorite sport to watch at the Olympics.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?
I don't know how it possible but I have never seen before any Olympic opening ceremonies live streaming. Watching the above videos, I realized that I lost a lot. It looks stunning!

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?
Mostly I like watch football. To specify championship this is Champions League. This is a very prestigious competition in which the best football clubs and the best footballers take part. I would like to note that there is also a ceremony in the Champions League before the final match. Maybe Champions League final ceremony isn't as amazing as Olympic opening ceremonies but also you can see a lot of artists and ornaments.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
Yes, not one. During the pandemic, I run most often. Before lockdown I used to go to the gym regularly. Now, when we can't go to the gym I'm trying to replace the gym with other activities such as running or cycling. Although I won't build up my muscles by cycling or running, but it's very important for our health to move and do anything.
1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?
I watched only one Olympic opening ceremony. It was in 2012 and it was Summer Olympic Games in London. The part I remember best was when Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean was playing with British Orchestra. I also remember the concert of Spice Girls, there were later some rumours that they were going to come back.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?
I am not a huge fan of watching sports, I definitely prefer to do some. Nevertheless, I like watching Olympic games, at least some disciplines. Every year I watch with my father The Six Nations Championship, which the most popular rugby competition. Thanks to watching rugby matches I had a possibility to see Haka dance, which is a traditional, ceremonial dance in Maori culture. It is performed by New Zeland rugby players
3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
I’ve been practising Aikido for the last 17 years. It was fun for me when I was a child but later after a few years I started to treat it more seriously. It turned into a very important part in my life and I’m really upset that because of coronavirus I can’t go to trainings.
1) Since 2008, I have been watching every opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. I used to train sport shooting and watch every Olympics with nostalgia. What I like the most is the combination of modern technologies and taradition. Holograms of legendary animals related to the host country are great.
It is also a beautiful moment to welcome all participants of the competition.
2)
Of course I love watching the shooting sport. I was at the Polish sport shooting championship several times, I even had a silver medal in one competition, but I was far from being an Olympian.
3)
Sometimes I will visit the shooting range and shoot. I do not intend to continue my sports career anymore because every sport practiced performance causes some injuries. I once had a spine injury and returning to training may cause the disease to come back again

Hello guys! Thank you for your comments! 😊

After reading the answers, I see that most of you have chosen an opening ceremony in London. I also can say that this opening ceremony was my favourite. It was held in 2012 when we were the proper age to remember this. The ceremony also showed the well-known history of Great Britan. But I think the greatest impression was made by the performance of Mr Bean.
What about sports competition that you like to watch, here the comments surprised me a little. I have thought that almost all of you will name the European Cup and World Cup. But answers include different kind of sports like swimming, canoeing, volleyball, horse riding and even rugby.

1. Have you ever watched the Olympic opening ceremonies? If yes, which do you like the most?

Yes, yes! It’s my tradition to watch every Olympic opening ceremony. For me it's a great show, especially to discover the history and culture of other countries. I remember how I watched the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic games in 2008. I was only 8 year old, but it made a big impression on me. It was the greatest opening, the organization of the people really surprised me. Thousands of people connected in one bug installation. Also i like opening in Sochi 2014, because it was a great demonstration of Russion history, but there was a problem with the costs of this show. It was 10 times more expensive than the Beijing opening ceremony. In fact citizens were robbed by law and organizations. Also I like the opening ceremony in Rio. It wasn’t too expensive, but It was very cozy and intimate, like a family supper.

2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?

My favourite are of course horse riding and gymnastics. Also I like all skiing disciplines and figure skating.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I practiced horse riding for about 3 years, when i lived in Ukraine. I lived near a hippodrome and I had an opportunity to exercise often. It was show jumping discipline. But now I don't have enough money and time to practice, maybe one day I’ll be back into sport.

I'm not a fan of watching sporting events but I always watch the final matches of the champions league. In the year it's Olympics, I love watching athletics.

3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?

I trained ground tennis since I was a child, but at the age of 14 I switched to martial arts. I started from boxing, then I switched to kickboxing and after a few years I changed to muay thai which I train to this day.

Yes, I watched the opening in Beijing but it was a long time ago I didn't watch any other opening ceremony ever since
2. Which sports championship do you like to watch?
I like to watch football championships especially World Championships. In Olympic sports it's fun to watch for a while but not for a full lasting competitions.
3. Do you do any kind of sports? If so, which one?
I don't do any sports. I try to exercise with my girlfriend lately. In highschool I liked to play basketball.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
