Week9[09.12-15.12.19] History of philately

After the creation of the first courier service in Egypt in 2400 BC which is now known as Mail, it has undergone many changes and modifications. But a really great invention for mail was made on May 1, 1840, as part of Sir Rowland Hill's postal reform. He suggested changing the method of calculating the cost of delivering letters and parcels, as well as who paid for the shipment (previously the recipient did it). That was the reason for the creation  of the first postage stamp - Black Penny. It was the event that created such a famous hobby as philately - collection, appreciation and researching stamps.

Penny Black

And a year after the Black Penny was released, the first announcement of their collection appeared: The Times published an advertisement for "a young lady, being desirous of covering her dressing room with canceled postage stamps." Since then, many countries have adopted the British delivery system and also created their own postage stamps, which in turn created more diversity for a person who wanted to collect "images for sending letters". In 1861 the first lists of stamps were published by Oscar Berger-Levrault in Strasbourg and Alfred Potiquet in Paris. This gave impetus to the occurrence of an entire hobby-related industry: lists of all postage stamps released at the time sorted by topic were created, albums for postage stamps were invented, books for collecting year packs were published, etc.
The father of stamps

In the 1860s, a small collection (for today) of 3,000 stamps could contain world-wide stamps available at that time. Today such a collection of this size is not surprising to anyone, every country releases several dozen different stamps a year or even more, but the presence of stamps from that time can boast only some philatelists.Today, philately is an affordable activity for everyone (especially after the invention of the Internet). Any collector can find the stamp he needs for his collection in a few hours, and in a few days pick it from letterbox. Now, Post Offices produce various, not typical stamps in large quantities and offer a fast delivery around the world, but the first stamps remain the most valuable historical monument and exhibit for philatelic collections worldwide.

1. Do you collect anything? If yes, what is it and what is the reason for that?

In the past I collected skins in a videogames but nothing else unfortunately. My sister collected coins but gave up on it after 2 years ( she had quite impressive collection ).

2. Do you use mail services? Why?

I use it sometimes to send some packages or when I ordered something so it is delivered to me but other than that I don't really use it that much.

3. What would you put on your postage stamp?

I would put there a dark mask. I always use this type of avatar in my online accounts. If it wouldn't look nice I guess I would create my own image connected to invisibility.

1. Do you collect anything? If yes, what is it and what is the reason for that?
Yes, I collect beer mats from the bars I've spend a good time in. The real reason I don't know I just wanted to have something from the place and abroad they have really nice and specific ones not like in Poland everywhere a generic Tyskie or Warka mat.

2. Do you use mail services? Why?
For packages only as I order various things on the internet.

3. What would you put on your postage stamp?
Oh man, I would never decide there are to many things. From my top five it could be a beer, gopnik, kolovrat or drinking horns smashing each.
1. No, I collect nothing. I've never had or thought of such a hobby. I used to think about collecting classic football shirts, but their price is staggering, you just don't have to buy a shirt for a few thousand PLN. Maybe someday, when I'm rich enough, I'll start collecting old cars, I don't hide it, I'm very interested in this type of collections.

2. No, I do not use. Since I started using email and instant messaging I have not used mail services. However, I know that many people still use it - paying bills, sending official letters, fines - all this must be done by mail services. Certainly, the post office is not as important as it used to be, I think that its importance will diminish.

3. Certainly some symbol associated with Poland, perhaps a Polish hussar - knight on horseback. This is one of the symbols associated with my country, I think it would look good on a postage stamp. And what would you put on your postage stamp?

Especially I don't collect anything, but I have a set of old coins, and coins from different countries. Most of them I found by chance, or someone gave me their. Oldest among these coins is just over two hundred years old.

2. Do you use mail services? Why?
Generally I don't use mail, but when I fly somewhere abroad, can send a postcard or some souvenir to my parents or friends by mail.

3. What would you put on your postage stamp?
I don’t know, I never thought about it, probably it should be some kind of national treasure or an important historical figure.

1. Right now i do not collect anything, I remember in a past there were certain trends and i was hopping on them like crazy but now it doesn't speak to me anymore.

2. I do as i'm selling many things online so when someone is unable to collect a product personally then i'm bound to use a postal service.

3. On my postage stamp I would put my selfie or something stupid to make people laugh.

1. I do actually. I was brutally forced by my friends and family to collect sloths. No, I’m joking. I love them. Although I must admit it’s more of a collection created by my relatives, rather than by myself. When it comes to the collection of a genuine sunset my dad has been collecting stamps for more than 30 years and nowadays, I tend to help him a lot with arranging them, ordering new editions etc. It started as a passion to have something unique for himself. Everyone during my dad’s childhood collected stamps, they exchanged them with friends, detached them from envelopes. That was something fascinating for him. And this love to postal stamps stayed with my dad for few more decades and now we can see how polish stamps design changes throughout the years without leaving our house ;)

2. Of course, I do. Mostly I use them because I order stuff online, have bills to pay, and these are the things that are quite often sent by mail services. Additionally, I send postcards to my closest friends from every place I visit, and they do the same kind of thing for me. I think it’s a cool way to show someone you appreciate their presence without spending money on useless souvenirs.

3. I would like to see my own face on the stamp. It would be perfect if I was surrounded by dogs and sloths.

1. I collect magnets. Whenever I go abroad and visit new city, country or Island I buy myself a souvenir - magnet from that place to mark my first time there. As soon as I got back home from the journey I hang on the special board in my bedroom, so every time I look at the magnet I recall the place, where I bought it and situations combined with that journey.

2. Yes, I use mail services. I think it’s nice to show your mum or granny you remember about her by sending her a Christmas card, when you can’t actually visit her for Christmas. Maybe it’s a bit old-school and out of date but whenever I visit a new place I always send a postcard to my best friend, anyway she always does the same it’s our tradition.

3. That’s really good question. I am sure I wouldn’t put a photography of myself on the postage stamp. I’rather choose some nice view I’ve seen or maybe a drawing made by myself, I think it would make a stamp look really original and creative.
I used to collect skins in Lol, postage stamps and coins. Now I collect souvenirs from other countries. I like to remember where I was and be able to come back to memories until I was in this place. My dad is a great stamp collector. He likes it very much and is fascinated by it.

I use mail services when I pay a ticket or send / receive a letter from the goverment. I think e-mail is more convenient than mail services: P
Probably 80%+ prefer electronical email i think.

I don't have any preferences about postage stamps, but maybe different games or programming languages could be on the postage stamp.

1. Do you collect anything? If yes, what is it and what is the reason for that?
Probably it isn't kind of collecting you are asking about, because it is more about items itself than actually collecting them.
I collect vinyls and cd's because i love music and i try to support artists i like.
I also collect models of warhammer and infinity figurines but it is more about painting them and playing board games with them.
When i was younger i used to collect pokemon cards - I even managed to have full first serie.

Very rarely. Only sometimes when i send cards from holidays. It is easier and quicker to contact others via text messages or emails. Sending mails require knowledge about recipient's address.

It would depend on my mood. Probably something i find funny.
1. Do you collect anything? If yes, what is it and what is the reason for that?
If collecting skins (alternative looks) for weapons in a computer game can be called collecting, then yes. I am a big fan of having as many cosmetic changes as possible for my characters or weapons in various games, in this case I mean a MMORPG, where you can dress your character in any way, use any weapons and all this can be additionally colored in many color dyes you own. So, most often I just choose items of clothing that will match each other in terms of theme and color. Despite that, I don't collect anything in the real world.

2. Do you use mail services? Why?
Since I live alone, I don't use mail services because I just don't need them. When I lived with my parents, most often they were usually the ones who were sending postcards or Christmas wishes, but I personally never did it. I don't have close enough relationships with anyone to write letters to. I just prefer to communicate with them via the internet. It's simpler and the message reaches them immediately.

3. What would you put on your postage stamp?
I think that on my post stamp I would put an image of some favorite character from books, series, universes which I like very much, or some nice landscape or place of special importance to me. I would like to make the stamp not stupid or ugly, I would like it to have some meaning that would convince all the people who come across it to learn the history of its image.

1. No, I don't collect anything.
2. Of course. Because the second way to deliver something to someone is to do it yourself. Mail is cheaper and easier. That's why I use its services. Of course, there are exceptions: too valuable or fragile thing, or some animal. But in general, it is easier to send mail.
3. It would be black. And a holographic arrow, which is used for archery shots.

2.I hardly ever try to. They are inrealiable. Many times I received damaged goods I ordered or after some ridicoulus period of time.

3. My very own face of course :).

I started to collect shot glasses. I bought one in a gas station on a trip in Amsterdam one time, and it blossomed from there. Since then, I've tried to gather shot glasses specifically with a City Name or a figure on them.. I have shot glasses from Istanbul, Paris, London, some of the continental U.S. states, Warsaw even from one from Hel... someday when I can travel more I'll try to complete my collection...but I'd say I have a little over 20 right now. So many to go..
2. Do you use mail services? Why?
Yes, I do. I ship parcels to family and friends.
3. What would you put on your postage stamp?
Idk, the cheapest stamp possible please. I dont care lol

1. When I was younger, I used to collect stamps. My father was really interested in it and we shared this passion. Right now I don't collect anything except from books. I really like both new and old editions of interesting books. Of course I read all of them, even though sometimes it's really hard as I have a lot of them.

2. Yes, I do. It's very useful when you order something or send packages to e.g. your family. I'm trying to avoid Poczta Polska and other courier services, because I'm not satisfied with the services that our post offers. To ship parcels I prefer parcel lockers.

3. I would like to see a collection of stamps with motives from famous books. I know that there are such series with classic novels, so maybe someone should make one with a classical sf books. I would love to see a stamp with a sandworm from Dune or robots from Isaac Asimov's series.

I used to collect a lot of things. At the age of 6 I collected various types of stones. They were very special and unique. I wanted to become a genealogist. I also collected postage stamps and old coins. Which I still have today. Just another hobby of a child I guess.

2. Do you use mail services? Why?

Yes, I do not send letters or postcards. Usually most of these are parcels and packages that I order from online stores.

3. What would you put on your postage stamp?

Probably some nice picture with me or my beloved Maltese dog with the background of a beautiful landscape.

1. I used to collect postage stamp, but now I don't collect anything. When I was a child stamp collecting was great oppourtunity to befriend and meet with people who have similar hobby.

2. I use it on order to send correspondence at work. Moreover I use mail service everytime when I order something online.

3. To be honest I have never thought about it, so I have to think on my feet. I think that I would put long-nosed monkey on my postage stamp. In my opinion this animal is realy funny and make me laught.
1. Yes, I collect fridge magnets. Magnets showing a panorama of the city or an object characteristic of a given city. The name of the town is on the magnet. In this way I collect souvenirs from countries that I have already visited.

2. No, I do not use postal services. Polish post office is slow and rarely performs its tasks. I prefer to use courier services because they are faster.

3. My cat!
1. I used to collect music CDs because I love music, but now I don't use them so they are just sitting there on the shelves.
2. Occasionally. I don't sell anything online or something like that so I rarely have to use one.
3. I don't think I want my personal postage stamp.

Well why only by yourself? There are also courier services, or you can transfer through someone, in the end you can just throw the bottle in the sea and wait for it to find its addressee (by the way, not quite an expensive method, too :) ). So you don't have to use postal delivery services.
And as for your postage stamp, a pretty good design, I would add one to my collection - minimal and pretty symbolic.
Anton Chechel said…
Of course, collecting skins is collecting. No matter where it is in the real world or computer, but you are collecting something and it is good too. I also like when my game characters look good but turn it into a hobby and collect all the skins that are only available, I probably don't want. I like analog images more :)
And as for the postal services, in defense of them I must say that you probably did not feel the joy of receiving a letter or a postcard that went a long way to get into your mailbox. In fact, the letter, sent to you, has life full of travel. I should also add that if you want to try to feel this pleasure, there is a project called Postcrossing, in which people send each other postcards around the world. So you can try.
Anton Chechel said…
What kind souvenirs do you collect? Something like magnets or plates, or is it something more unique that represents the country of origin?
And stamps on which topics your father collects? Or does he collect what he likes regardless of the topic?
About the postage stamps you offer, I just say that the post market does not have enough stamps on this subject. I would be happy to buy a few from this series.
I don’t collect anything. I’m not interesting in this at all. I use mail services for work. Sometimes I need to send some documents to the other city. If I could I would put on the postage stamp middle finger, would be fun, XD
Thank you.
Anton Chechel said…
Why did you stop collecting this? Just bothered, or because it is energy consuming or is there any other reason?
As for the postal services, I agree, they need reform and reorganization. They need to follow the example of private courier services in the parcel delivery algorithm and in general, and also need to redesign the mail sort system to speed up delivery and increase its quality.
Anton Chechel said…
It is interesting to hear that you do not collect anything at all, because a person by nature is prone to collecting different things, it is not known what exactly may be needed :).
What about your stamp, as far as I know, many post offices in the world propose the service "own postage stamp" and if the image does not contradict the rules and laws of the country in which it will be printed (since it will be the official payment method) you can print even the middle finger. So everything is possible

Collecting stones is quite an interesting and rare hobby. They have a long history of creation and thats why contain a lot of information, which gives a great field for research, not just collecting.
You said that collecting stamps and coins is "another hobby of a child."Let me disagree with you. The above hobbies are very popular not only among young people but also among many adults. They are attracted to their history and therefore very interesting to many. Apparently you tried and it just didn't interest you.

No I don't collect anything. Sometimes I use the post office, mainly for wedding documents meant for red tape. In this moment I have no idea what to put on a stamp.
1. I used to collect many things like cards or toys when I was a kid.

2. I don't use postal services anymore, as I can do everything I need by email.

2. Not really. When we have the internet, mail services are only used to send packages or receive bills, but even this is becoming more rare
3. Maybe memes? Or images of popular topics like new Elon Musk's car? I don't really know, hard to say

1. When I was a child I used to collect pokemon cards, postcards and probably
some other things. Now I collect magnets which are souvenirs from places I’ve
been to. I try to choose these presenting something characteristic for the visited
city or country.
2. I’m trying not to. It’s ineffective and backward. However sometimes it’s
necessary to use it to receive a package or send documents. Once or twice I also
sent a postcard from vacation.
3. I’ve never thought about that. Probably something I really like. For example my
favorite car, a pork chop or something funny understandable only to
programmers.
1. No, I collected nothing. It's not for me.

2. When I just finished elementary school, I corresponded with a friend from a neighboring city. I liked to sign an envelope and glue stamps. There was also something pleasant in waiting for her letter. But with the advent of new technologies, I forgot about it and no longer use mail services. Now you can quickly and easily write to your friend on social networks and don't expect a week or more on the answer. Besides, there was also the possibility that the letter might be lost.

3. It is difficult to choose anything. Perhaps it would be my favorite flower or fruit or the first letter of my name. It would have taken me a long time to decide.

1) Yes, I love to collect perfumes. It is was my hobby for quite some time already, and the reason for that is actually very simple. I like to smell pleasant and attractive. And every good smell is good in its way, and hence by owning many good perfumes, you can smell good in many different ways and appropriately for many different occasions.
2) Yes, but only when I need to send some documents that absolutely have to be sent in a physical form. Otherwise, In my humble opinion, it is not worth the hassle these days.
3)The first thing I find that would do the job.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
