Week 9 [09.12-15.12.19] Survival of being buried alive

Have you ever wondered what your burial will look like, whether the doctors will make no mistake when writing the death certificate, or will you suddenly wake up under the lid of a closed coffin lying in a buried pit? Maybe you have decided to cremate your own body a long time ago and have never had such fears. I encourage you to watch a short video below, which shows some useful tricks that will allow you to be a bit calmer in that case. If this is really not your concern, please answer the questions assuming that this could also happen to you.

Please watch a short video below and then answer the questions:

Questions for you:
1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
Yes, all the time almost the same fear as damaging my brain forever and living as a vegetable.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
I hope I won't have to as I prefer to be burned on the wood. Much safer.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
Safety coffin sounds like my new best friend if someone decide to bury me this horrifc way, toher then that OG nokia 3310 and unlimited minutes for help.
1. Honestly, I never thought about it. But the fact sounds terrible. Such dying is more severe because it lasts several hours during which you are powerless. Flash death is much better.

2. If I were in what casket, I would try to act like Uma Thurman in the movie Kill Bill 2. If I was buried alive, without a casket, I would probably have no chance of saving myself.

3. I guess I'll start paying attention so that my phone is always charged. If I was buried, I would pray for a cellular phone coverage to call for help. What's more, I would invest in a notification system for loved ones - a band or a chip. That my family would know my position and condition.

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
Now I am afraid of that.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
First of all I would panic, then I'll check what's in there, maybe I can find something suitable in such situation, probably I will try to open the coffin from the inside. But mostly I will just die, I'm a bit klaustrofobic so I'll consume all air before I will calm down.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
It's kinda strange thing, I don't think many people are considered dead when they're not. But first of all I'll ask someone to ensure that I'm certainly dead and then ask to put a charged phone with me.

1. Actually i was never afraid of it, i've never thought of it and even after watching a video i'm still not afraid as it's still a totally abstract concept to think about.

2. I think I would do everything that I could but the chances would be really small to get to the surface.

3. I won't choose a safety coffin as if my family would put me inside a coffin they wouldn't like me to crawl back from it. Or i believe so at least.
Olga Przytula said…
1. I’ve never thought about it before so I wouldn’t say I have ever been afraid of something so abstract to happen. Plus, it doesn’t make any sense for me to be afraid of something so unlikely to happen. Nevertheless, I guess when you are claustrophobic, the fear of being buried alive is much stronger and intense.

2. Honestly, I think I would suffocate before I would figure out what is going on. I am also not that strong so I don’t think I would have any chance to dig myself out to the surface. Plus, I don’t think my family would be so precautious to bury me with my phone, especially when iPhones are famous for short battery life, lol.

3. No, I don’t think so. I plan to die at the age of 90, and seriously I don’t see any point in digging me out when I am that old. And if I happen to die earlier, I don’t think it would be because of the natural causes so … no. I’m not planning to spend money on safety coffin, or rather force my relatives to do so.

1. Yes, I have. Being buried alive frighten me so badly. It would be a scene from my worst nightmare. Being conscious of having very fat chance to survive, I’m pretty sure I would have a panic attack. Furthermore I suffer from claustrophobia, so due to this I would lost my lucidity very quickly.

2. I have to admit that I have no idea what I Would do. Unfortunatelly I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to do anything. at first I’d be paralysed with the situation and then I’d push the panic buton entirely. Maybe I’d try to cry for help, that’s all I think I would be able to do in such situation.

3. After watching this video I will choose a “safety coffin” for myself , definitively. Of course I hope I will never have a chance to experience of being buried alive but in case It will ever happen to me I want to be prepared for that.

I never thought what would happen if I was buried alive. I hope it never comes, because it's certainly nothing nice.

However, if I were buried alive, it certainly depends on whether I would be buried in a coffin/casket, because then I would knock. If I could, I would also try to use the phone.

After watching the film, I was confirmed that I want to be cremated. It's probably a better burial than burying the body and wasting space on graves on Earth. And as a powder I will stand somewhere or become a fertilizer: D

I have very vivid imagination and when i was kid, i used to imagine it several times.

This kind of situation is quite extreme. It is very hard to answer that question as it is hard to imagine that realistically. Depending on the reason why am i burried alive (am I in coffin?, is someone trying to murder me? was it some kind of disaster like earthquake?) I would probably try kill myself as i hate idea of suffocating. I would probably think of scratching vains in hand.

I've heard about it, but it didn't anything to me. I am not thinking about my funeral but defenitely i won't ask about getting special coffin. I think that cremation is good idea, so maybe this will solve problem.

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
This is literally my biggest nightmare. I really can not imagine anything worst than that.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
Well, I would do anything I could. It is hard to say exactly what as then one would not be able to actually know how deep he is and if there is any chance of getting out.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
Luckily I do not think about my funeral and I hope not to for many many years, but a safety gun in the coffin would be nice.
Thank you for the answer, you made my day by mentioning Nokia 3310, pretty clever to take with you the indestructible phone that we used to play football at school breaks. I also think that cremation is a better method than burying the whole body in the ground, certainly giving more peace. However, you must tell someone before you die, of course, because it will be too late afterwards.

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
No, I have never thought about being buried so far, so not even thought about being buried alive, maybe I am still not old enough to imagine about this.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
Without knowing the thickness and stiffness of the coffin, I can only push and kick the cover, I guess this is the only way if we get nothing with us inside the coffin.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
Of course I will choose a "safety coffin", everyone wants safer and better things, but as I answer in first question, I am not thinking about my funeral, I am still too young to smell the coffin candles.
Thank you for your answer. Yes, you are right, the oxygen in the casket is enough for a maximum of roughly two hours, then the worst time of slow choking comes. So it's not strange that the instant death is definitely a better death. Burial alive without a casket - I don't even want to think about it. However, I think that such cases only happen when you deal with some mafia. I like the chip or band idea very much, it would be a good alternative to a "safety coffin".
Thank you for your reply. First of all, I'm sorry for making you aware of another fear, it wasn't my intention. Yeah, having trouble controlling yourself when you wake up in a casket is the worst thing you can do. Then you have much less chance of survival (which is incredibly small anyway). Yes, you are right, nowadays such cases are very rare, but in the past it was rather quite frequent, that's why among others the "safety coffin" was invented.
Thank you for your answer. I understand your way of thinking, burying alive is really a rare phenomenon nowadays, that's why it may be considered really abstract. I'm sorry to hear that, but apart from the family, maybe you would become famous or you could share your achievements in the coffin, I don't know.
Thank you for your answer. You are right that the fear of being buried alive is most often associated with claustrophobia. Should you listen to the advice of a colleague at the very beginning of the comments and take Nokia 3310 with you, it will definitely give you more options than the iPhone. I am very pleased to hear that, 90 is a really nice number, I wish you all the best :)
Thank you for the reply. Being claustrophobic, thinking about burying alive certainly can't be easy, personally I don't have such fears, but I understand your problem, because claustrophobia has a lot to do with feeling that particular fear. However, if you wake up in a coffin, it's best to clear your mind and try to control your emotions with all your strength. Maybe as a last resort you will find something that will allow you to get to the surface. It's always worth a try, you just need the oxygen.
Thank you for your answer. It's always worth knocking or hitting the lid of the coffin, there is a minimal chance that someone could hear it. A phone is also a good option, but you must have it with you first. Well, I would suggest becoming a fireplace decoration as a nice urn with ornaments - certainly better than the vision of becoming fertilizer.
Thank you for your reply. You are right that the possibility of getting to the surface and getting out of such a situation would depend on the reason why you came underground. Maybe someone would like to make it particularly difficult for you to get out of this situation, maybe someone would especially bury you alive. Would you really rather scratch your veins than die by suffocation? I'm personally frightened by your idea and I would never be able to do that. Uh.
Thank you for the answer. I wonder if you suffer from claustrophobia, because if this is really your biggest nightmare, there is a great chance that you do. You have raised another interesting element of being buried alive, because the depth at which you are buried is also important. Sometimes you may be able to beat the lid, but the amount of dirt won't allow you to get out. A safety gun? An interesting idea, definitely one for the final decision, if all else fails.
Thank you for your answer. I understand that you are not thinking about your burial yet, it would be difficult to find a young person who would think about it. You're right that if you don't have anything with you inside the casket, you will most likely not be able to do anything. The only hope remains being heard by someone on the surface. However, remember about the belt buckle.
1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
I’ve never been afraid of that, but I’ve read somewhere that in middle ages some people have been buried alive and nail marks were found on the inside of their coffin, because they desperately wanted to get out. It was also a common practise to attach a bell to a string coming out of the coffin, in case the person wasn’t really dead and wanted to escape. But I don’t know if it’s really true, because it sounds far-fetched.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
I guess I’d try shouting for help and kicking the coffin, so somebody would hear me. But most likely I’d be to terrified to think clearly about what my best next action would be. The lack of oxygen wouldn’t work in my favour either and people aren’t buried with anything in their pockets, so that wouldn’t be helpful.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
In my opinion being cremated is a good way to make sure you won’t be buried alive. It’s certain that you won’t have to worry about that. Although if someone is indeed afraid of being buried alive, they can make sure to be provided with a phone, water and oxygen mask after they ‘die’.
Maciej P s16488 said…
It is extreme situation where nothing is pleasent. Scratching veins would be painful (but probably not as much as you could imagine, because of adrenaline rush) on the other hand you will feel lack of oxygen before you actually start suffocating and suffocating process might last longer than dying out of blood loss.
In Roman Empire cutting veins was a way to let go because it was one of least painful ways you could make it.
1. Obviously I'm afraid, like everyone. But after hugging this movie probably even more :(

2. Hard question, I would probably scream until I run out of oxygen. But if I was calm, I would try to break something sharp

3. Probably yes, but you have to think about it in your lifetime :)
Kuba Berliński said…

1. Yes, I have. In the past I had nightmares about that.

2. Most likely just die in panic, but if I was able to keep cold blood I'd cover my face with shirt try to knock the coffin cover and try to dig to the surface.

3. Regardless of watching this video, I'd rather be cremated.
Thank you for clarifying this. Indeed, the suffocating process would be slow and very uncomfortable, maybe you are right to scratch your veins. Personally, however, I don't know if I would be able to do it, despite the adrenaline and no other way out. My psyche probably wouldn't let me, I would be paralyzed by fear at the very thought. I would certainly take it calmly and if all else fails, simply accept the fate of the lack of oxygen. Thank you also for the tip about Roman Empire, I didn't know that.
Thank you for your answer. In modern times, "sudden waking up" isn't common, and every such situation is widely reflected in the media. However, a few centuries ago, the graves of still alive people weren't so rare at all, so you are right. Archaeologists studying one of the 16th-century English cemeteries estimated that even one in 25 people buried there could have been buried alive! Such a large percentage was most directly affected by the doctors' errors in diagnosing actual human death. As for burying people without any objects, I wouldn't quite agree with you. Sometimes some have favorite items or souvenirs that were very important to them during their lifetime, or maybe the closest ones are putting something in their pockets as a gesture of farewell. You never know, but these items may prove to be the only tools that could really help you to reach the surface.

I just don't quite know what to do to actually get out. It is very unlikely that I would get out from this situation.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
I think I want to be cremated, so I am sure that I will never have to experience being burried alive.
1. Yes, every time I think of it it seems scary to me. Probably I will have myself cremated after I die just to be sure.
2. I think I would try to punch through the coffin. However, I think that nowadays coffins are so solid that it wouldn't be possible for me to survive. I guess I would just die.
3. As I said before. I will have myself cremated after my death and then have my ashes thrown away somewhere. I don't really care where.

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?

Yes, I cannot imagine death at the moment and still I would think that someone would bury me alive. These are terribly traumatic thoughts.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?

I think that before I knew where I was and what happened to me, I would have already died. I don't think anyone would want to be in this situation. I think I would scream and call for help, maybe a miracle would happen and someone good would hear me.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?

In fact, I'm thinking about that right now. Why add traumatic experiences. I don't really influence it. If I die, it won't be my decision what will be put into my casket. I think it's just a waste of money.
1. Just the fact of being locked up in a very cramped place is overwhelming, not to mention the fact that this place could also be a few meters underground. I have always been a fan of cremation so I hope that the person who will deal with my burial will listen to my last will, it would certainly save a lot of stress for poor almost dead me :D

2. No idea, if I somehow would be able to survive a panic attack with the addition of my asthma I would probably check if I have a phone on me. If the answer is yes, then I would call the police or other emergency number. If the answer is no I would try to force my way out, but I would probably fail miserably.

3. I will always pick cremation, its compact, easy and cheap also I don't want to bother my family with the costs of my burial. They can always place my urn in some cool spot, scatter my ashes, make fake diamond or "vinyl" record out of me (yes it's possible) :D

1. I've never thought about that, but I think that it's absolutely crippling. Moreover I'm sure that it might be the worst possible way to die.

2. To be honest I have no idea what I would like to do in this situation, but I think that shouting may be the best way to survive.

3. I would like to choose a safety coffin for myself, because thank to it have chance to survive. Moreover I will be buried with mobile phone do that I will call for help.
I think everyone is afraid to be buried alive. I keep telling my family that in case of my sudden death they should put something into my coffin that could help me getting out or contacting anyone. Of course i would do everything i could to get to the surface.
1. To be honest, I never thought about that. But after reading this article I thought about it and it is terrible!

2. I would most likely use the methods outlined in this video.

3. I don't think I would do anything.
Of course, I have been scared of being buried alive. I think everyone at some point thought about this. It is really scary perspective being down there alone and just waiting to suffocate. Actually, I think to avoid such problem I would like to be cremated after death so I would be sure that this situation does not happen to me. This is answer to your second and third question I guess because if I will be cremated then I would never have such problem.
Thank you for the answer. I agree with you that the experience of suddenly waking up in a cramped coffin can be a nightmare, after which it's difficult to control and calm at first. I am also in favor of cremation of my own body, maybe not because I am afraid of being buried alive, but simply because of my own will. Well yeah, asthma certainly wouldn't be very helpful there, I don't know much about this disease, but I wonder how asthmatics behaves with a slowly falling amount of oxygen, whether the problems occur only when he gets tired physically, or also in such special, very different cases? I would also like to become a nice decoration of a special place in the home of the closest person. I don't know if I understand your last sentence correctly, but I don't think I would like to become a vinyl record, lol.
Nope, I've never been afraid of being buried alive, but after I watched this video I'll definitely will be thinking about this. Now I'm thinking about when I need to ask or tell what is needed to be put with me in coffin. Some items I believe is necessary like flashlight, knife, bottle with fresh air, mask. And the coffin will be wooden it’s number one request. Also if I left enough money as inheritance I would like to be buried in “safety coffin”. Thank you for this video, I enjoyed watching this.
Thank you for your answer. At the same time, I'm glad that I gave you a little picture of this problem, but I would also like to apologize, just don't think about it too long. Think of it as a curiosity. Definitely, during your lifetime, prepare a list of things you want to have in your coffin just in case, or invest in a "safety coffin". This may seem silly, but you'll definitely be calmer. After all, this is a one-time expense. Also, thank you for watching the video. I'm glad you enjoyed it. In fact, I wanted to choose some animated material with nice animations and a more infographical look, but unfortunately there was no such a production.
Attack of asthma is in some cases similar to drowning or near drowning experience. Imagine, that only a small amount of oxygen is being able to get into your lungs and with every breath its even harder to get more. Taking in consideration that air in the coffin would be stale and hard to breath in it would be even harder to recover from asthma attack so there is a big possibility that I would just suffocate even if there was a big amount of oxygen to breath in for normal person. If it comes to vinyl record I heard about the company that can compress ashes of a dead person to create something similar to vinyl disc and and then record something on it.
Thank you for the clarification. Wow ok, the vision of becoming a vinyl record sounds incredibly strange, but the possibility of recording something on it sounds even stranger. I wonder how many people decide on this type of transformation and what they record on it, or whether at all. Thanks for the tip! Regards.

I can’t say that I wasn't afraid, most likely I simply didn't think about it. As a child, I was very afraid to be locked in a small place such as a closet or a large bag or stuck under a bed.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
Without a clue, maybe I would panick, be shocked and lose consciousness :) One thing I know for sure, if I was buried alive and I could get out, the first thing I would do was find the person who did it and bury him, but so that no one has found him ...

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
If I had the opportunity to take some useful items with me, I'd take a gun and make people who decided to do this to me change their minds about.

3. I dont actually know. I dont think about death too much now. I think that such situations dont happen too much and I plan to die in an age that would leave no doubts that I ma dead.

I mean, I don’t like being in tiny dark places and being buried alive sounds like a horrible situation for me, but I hope that nobody hates me as much to bury me alive :) And that my family will check if I’m really dead before placing me in the coffin :D
Well, I’ve seen an article about it come time ago and it said few things, one of which was actually never mentioned in that video: do not panic, as you’ll consume more air, check around if you have anything useful and if you try to break the coffin (in case you’re buried in some cheap coffin which you can break) you might want to try to place your t-shirt or something you’re buried in on your face so the soil won’t get into your nose and mouth in case you’re succeeded with the coffin breaking activities.
I think that safety coffin is a good thing, because if you’re buried by mistake it should be enough to let somebody know that you’re alive, and if you’re buried by some not so good man they probably won’t respect your wish to take useful tools with you.
1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?
Yes, I have. Honestly, I cant't even imagine that something could be so bad as being buried alive. I am just terrified of this. During my childhood I used to watch a lot of crime series. Once I saw that one of the main character was buried alive and now I am really scared of that. All because of crime series.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
It depends on circumstances. At first I would probably start to panic. After that I would look for useful items that would help me to get to the surface like phone or belt. If I found something useful maybe I would be able to survive. But this is extreme situation and I hope I will never have to go through this.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
If I have to choose one of these option I’ll go with „safety coffin”. It gives a sense of security in emergency cases. But the best option for me is to be cremated. There is no chance that you will be buried alive then. I would like to be cremated to make sure I will never be buried alive.

1. Fortunately not, but I think it must be a traumatic experience.
2. I think that I would definitely try to dig myself up while saving air.
3. I think a safety casket will be a good idea. I would definitely like to have a hammer and an iPhone with me ;) , maybe I could catch the range.
1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?

Not really, but the concept of being buried is frightening for me. I would definitely panic but I am strongly convinced that I would be able to somehow manage to get out of there.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?

Propably I would try to gasp as much oxygen as I possibly could and try to brake the coffin desk from inside. By now you might have realised that my strategy is pretty much the same as the one which Black Mamba used in Kill Bill. If you think so - you are exactlly right.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?

I guess that when it comes to choosing my coffin I wouldn't have much to say. I hope that it wouldn't be my responsibilty to buy a coffin and arrange my own funeral. If it will be my responsibilty - something must have gone wrong on the way.

1. Have you ever been afraid of being buried alive?

Yes I have, I can’t really imagine more horrible scenario to die because you were buried alive.

2. If this happened in your case, what would you do to get to the surface?
I hope it will never happen to me, but if it did happen I would try not to panic and evaluate my situation. After that I would try to do everything possible to dig my way to the surface. But who am I kidding, I would probably just die.

3. After watching this video, will you decide in the future to choose a “safety coffin” for yourself, or perhaps you will take some useful items with you?
I would just write in my will that I want to be cremated, because of that I would be certain that I won’t be in this situation.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
