Week 9 [09.12-15.12.19] Can listening to classical music make you more intelligent?

I am sure that most of you are aware of the benefits of classical music to the psycho-emotional state of a person. Classical music undoubtedly affects many parts of the brain. But can it affect your effectiveness in the short term? As it turned out, it is possible. This phenomenon is known as the Mozart Effect. For example, listening to Mozart’s music enhances our brain activity. After listening to Mozart, people who answer the standard IQ test demonstrate an increase in intelligence. What is true here, but what is just a lie, and what is statistics? I suggest you familiarize yourself with this in more detail:

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?

1. Sometimes I listen to music at work, but that depends on the task I'm doing. I'm sure music can increase my productivity if I solve some mathematical or logical tasks.

2. In my opinion, music can cause a wide range of effects on the human body. Listening to music I can feel everything, starting with sadness, through indifference and calm, ending with joy and euphoria.

3. Usually I try to find a quiet place to stay away from the rest of the environment to focus more on my work.

1. Yes I listen to music when I work or study but my playlist is always different. I tend to use some random playlists almost every time I start to do something. It really helps me to focus what lets me to be more productive.

2. Well music can change the way we feel for example we will get sad or angry after listening to some music. Sometimes music can bring our memories back or help us to relax. It has a really big influence over us so we areally should match music to a situation.

3. I don't need much to boost my efficiency. I try to make myself a coffee or buy energy drink, play some relaxing music and find a place without people or if its not possible just wear headphones that will mute the noise.
1. I don't listen to music to increase my effectiveness. I am a person who likes silence. Music distracts me and prevents me from focusing on my task. I tried to listen to classical music, but there were no positive effects.

2. I have the impression that thanks to music man can relax. I love listening to music while running. I always try to do it after a hard day at work and at the university. Thanks to this, I can forget about everyday problems.

3. I don't have any tricks to increase my efficiency. I just focus on tasks. Other activities can distract me. As I mentioned, I like silence. When I'm sleepy and full - I can do every task.

1. I always listen to music when I need to concentrate.
I can listen to music for a whole workday to keep my mind productive.
The only thing that I change from time to time is the genre that i want to listen.

2. Some people use music to relax or even for meditation.
People from ancient times have used music at battles, or to improve work and synchronize the rythms.

3. I think drinking coffee may help.
But most boost gives you task that you're most interested in.

1. Normally i do not as i'm best focused when i'm working in complete silence.

2. I've observed when i'm training than certain type of music pumps up a human body better than other. It's easier to train with fast paced loud music then with classical masterpieces.

3. Normally i'm just locking myself alone with every thing that could disrupt my work switched off. It works really well.
Olga Przytula said…

1. Yes, I tend to do this quite often, moreover – I think it has a positive effect on the quality of my work. When I’m involved in some process, that does not require my full attention (especially regarding my hearing) I usually listen to my favourite artists and genres. It helps me focus, boosts my concentration and helps me do my work faster. Of course, there are exceptions, and when I’m in the middle of learning Spanish, French or something regarding animation projects I turn the music off, as my brain requires 100% of concentration. Nevertheless, I work surrounded by music whenever it’s possible. I hate to work in silence.

2. I think music can give us huge boost of positive thoughts and confidence, helps us during tough times to identify with sorrowful emotions, and it’s also a great motivator during workouts and physical activities. At least for me all of these things are true.

3. I don’t think I have any kind of method to increase my work efficiency as I am rather pleased with my productivity. I have this habit to list all the things I should do throughout the day, and thanks to that it is easier for me to keep track of all my duties and everyday tasks. I always try to get rid of all the distractions: I mute my smartphone notifications and try to find a place somewhere quiet so I can focus and get in the zone. I’ve also noticed, that sometimes it’s just better to let go, and postpone the work to different day rather than force something completely inefficient to correct it later. I think it also improves work efficiency in some way, as you do things, that you are capable of doing, at the moment, rather than force yourself and your brain to do something sloppy.
Szymon Kluczek said…
1. Yes,I always listen to music while working but I only use to listen to soul music in order to Focus better during work. I have to admit I didn’t know about Mozart Effect until now. I have to try it anytime soon, if there is at least small ghost of a chance to make my work more efficient by listen to classical music meanwhile, It’s worth trying, who knows... maybe I will even reach new heights at my work.

2. I know music has stress-relieving effect on people. It lets us to calm down and get a break,. Music also elates people and makes them put their problems behind them for a little while. Listen to music can make you feel motivated to do something, that’s why always at the gym everyone works out with their headphones on.

3. One of the best methods of increasing work efficiency for me is: not having to much on my mind at the same time. I am not good at multitasking, so I just avoid it, so as to fully focus on one task, make it done properly and be able to take another one. I also mute my telephone in order not to get distraced if I get a message or notifications on my social media.

So, by your comment we can judge that after all this theory is more inclined to be true. I certainly support you in that it has a noticeable effect of course. Thank you!
s18716 said…
Sometimes it happens that music cannot affect us, for example, it does not fit the current mood. We are trying to switch to something more suitable. In most cases, is that so?
s18716 said…
That is, the desire to sleep makes you effective? This is an interesting observation.
In general, in your case the situation is the opposite. It's also good. But still, you try to use it during physical exertion. I think this phenomenon can also be attributed to increased efficiency through music.
s18716 said…
For meditation, yes too. Still for immersion in the deep phase of sleep. In general, for everything, the main thing is to be able to find and choose a genre. Coffee, on the other hand, has a less narrow range of possibilities, but it’s fine for concentration, I agree.
s18716 said…
Try Vivaldi. I mean, try it in training, it has very rhythmic pieces with an increasing rhythm. Maybe this will not be a bad alternative either. Well it is, purely for the sake of experiment.
s18716 said…
Well, in the nomination "Music lover 2019" you win! In general, in order to confirm this theory, we just had to read your comment. I am very glad that you have such a cool way of concentration as music. I wish you good songs in the playlist!
s18716 said…
The most positive comment. Thanks!
By the way, yes, according to recent reasearch in the field of neurophysiology and all sorts of things that affect productivity, it was concluded that multitasking is not the best way to solve everything at once. Therefore, you are on the right track. Good luck!
Pawel Bluszcz said…
1. Yes, I listen to music for almost 70% of my work. It varies and suits my humor. Sometimes I listen to classical music, e.g. Chopin, and sometimes I like more club sounds.
2. Maybe not necessarily about the impact on the human body, although once I heard that some gardeners play music to their plants to grow faster.
3. In my opinion, we should first of all ensure comfort at work. There should be nothing around us that can distract us and I think this is half of the success. In addition, I recommend everyone to sleep, eat healthy (remember that we are what we eat), and as mentioned in the article - I also recomend listening to the music when learning.

I listen to music in work when i have opportunity but it isn't always the case of increasing productivity. Sometimes indeed it is correlated. On the other hand, it never decreases my productivity.

It derives from our mood but also influences our mood. It is strong tool for affecting it.
I've heard that music has healing potential.

I use procognitive supplementation. Drinking yerba mate, eating healthy food, doing sports and getting good amount of sleep will increase work efficiency too.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
Yes I do. Not only the classical music, any music without anyone signing does the job while working. Words in songs tend to make you focus on them and distract from what you are doing.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
Music can actually can influence a person in very different ways, depending on genre. It can make one be relaxed, but also energetic or even angry. It really comes down to the choice of music type.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
As I mentioned before, music without singer is great for me. Also, complete silence makes me very productive.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
It depends on what I am working on, if it is about science, I do not listen to music, because sometimes it influences me especially when I have the solfeggio and ear training habit, which means my brain is easy to get distracted to decode the melody to musical notes subconsciously while listening to music, I guess other music students have same situation too. If it is about some simple work, I used to listen to music and it increase my productivity.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
There was a scene in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" made me very touched, In the scene, Andy was detained, and spent a full month in the dark room. After he came out, his companions asked him how he spent it. Andy answered "I Have Mozart with me". I guess this is also Mozart Effect too, it helps human body to keep positive.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
I guess I do not have any method, I am not into coffee, what I can do is not to be distracted by phone or other activities during work, and of course I have to sleep enough.
s15385 said…
1. It depends. When I have something important to do and I have to be focused then I don't listen to music. On the other hand when my work doesn't require more focus I turn on music.

2. It depends on the human. Music can have relaxing effects for ones or work energetic for the others.

3. I usually try not to focus on my phone and social medias but on my work. I turn off Facebook not to be disrupted by messages. These are my main methods of increasing work efficiency.
1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
Yes, I always listen to music when I work or do anything, because then I work lighter and more pleasant. However, if I need maximum focus on any command or element of a task, then I need complete silence, because music can then distract me and interrupt my fulfillment of my duty - this occasion happens quite rarely, therefore I like to listen to music during work. However, I don't listen to classical music, I prefer something more dynamic, lively, necessarily having vocals.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
I know that many people listen to music for relaxation, when lying in bed or even falling asleep to facilitate this process. Others listen to music while exercising in the gym, or while jogging to give themselves energy and a pleasant time. Others, like me, listen to music while playing computer games, which gives a sense of superiority over others and adds strength and increases skills during the game.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
Good ventilation in the workplace is crucial for me, my brain needs good oxygenation, and if it's missing, I'm very sleepy and absolutely unproductive. Secondly, coffee or energy drinks stimulate me a lot, which helps me achieve my goal faster. As I mentioned, music is a very good helper at work, as well as sometimes complete silence, thanks to which I can reach the peak of concentration.

So I decided to read about the effects of music on plants, and this is what I found:
70s: scientists from the Swedish Music and Therapeutic Society found that the plasma of plant cells under the influence of music moves much faster.
Well, in general, there has been a lot of research on this topic.
s18716 said…
If not mistaken, yerba mate also contains caffeine. In general, according to the comments, we come to the conclusion that the use of caffeine is the best way to concentrate. A moot point.
s18716 said…
Yes, for some reason, it also seems to me that music without singers, that is, without words, is more suitable in order to concentrate on your work. I sometimes see when people listen to rap during work, for example. How do they do it?
s18716 said…
Oh, by the way, there was such an epic moment in this film. But something I did not think about it. Okay, we assume that this is also a kind of Mozart effect. By the way, here is this passage:

Yes, oddly enough in the 21st century, in order to set yourself up for the right working wave, it’s enough just to disconnect from social networks, well, or just take the phone away. This also requires inner strength.
s18716 said…
Great example! Thanks! I'm about video games. A vivid example of how music affects a person. Namely, on the psycho-emotional component of the player. More than one research has definitely been done in this area. This is the whole art of choosing the right tracklist for the game. Absolutely!

You are right. Yerba contains caffeine, but contains less of it than coffee and yerba's caffeine seems to work differently. You can find interesting read here https://www.erowid.org/plants/yerba_mate/yerba_mate_chemistry1.shtml

Oh, thanks! I'll keep it on mind)
1. I listen to music while working. Music gives me concentration and calmness which is important in my work.

2. Surely therapeutic !. Music is good for the nervous system, calms down, reduces stress which is too much anyway.

3. It's hard to say. I certainly listen to music, I often take breaks (this is very important) and probably all in all
s15487 said…
1. Not really. I know, that listening to music help keep focused or even increase productivity for most people, but I rather prefer silence when I have some problem to solve.
2. I think that the most important and well-known feature of music is that it helps us relax and clear mind after intensive work. Unfortunately, no other examples come to my mind at the moment.
3. Making a short break, running for a while or doing other sorts of physical activity helps me clear mind and therefore, increase the efficiency a little bit.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
I love listening music a lot but I guess due to my kind of liked genre that's helps not being productive for me, instead it keeps my mind away what I am focusing on so when I work seriously I try to avoid listening to musics.
2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
Music has a profound impact on our mind and body. Modern life is so hectic, people don't get time for themselves. Listening to music while you feel you are disturbed can certainly relieve you of your tensions. Even for many people that even can help for productivity but as I said it just don't do it for me.
3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
I try to finish my work as fast as possibly because if i have a short break due to my laziness 10 mins breaks counts on Saturn time which takes 1 hour of break even sometimes more on Earh time.

1. I often listen to music during working, but I'm not sure if it increases my productivity. I'm afraid that I do it to make this time for pleasant and it rather interupts me than help with learning. All in all, this interruption isn't that big and I can still concentrate on what I'm doing.

2. I don't know many things about it, as I have never been interested in it. The only thing that comes to my mind is relaxation - music helps one to relax and for a while forget about everyday life's problems.

3. I try to concentrate on only one thing at once - do it from the beginning to the end and then start something new. Another important thing is making breaks - every hour or two of work should equal to 30 minutes of break - it increases efficiency as you're not tired with thing that you do.
1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?

Of course, I sometimes listen to music at work. It depends on what I have to do usually when I need full concentration, I don't listen to music but during my daily activities, which I do not for the first time, music allows me to do it better.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?

Music affects our mood and our brain waves. In fact, there are still a lot of uncertainties as to how our brain works, so there will certainly be more tests to check the reactions of our bodies.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?

I'm trying to write well and draw out what I'm supposed to do. It is also necessary to plan the time and steps that we have to do.

I know that music helps increase joy, focus and helps in difficult times.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
Of course listening to music, but also going for quick walk around my workplace for every two hours. Also drinking to much coffee helps me a lot.

I never listen to music while I work because I can't focus. I usually listen to music in the car or while exercise on the gym. It makes me happy, positive and motivated. Since I was a kid I couldn't stop dancing around music. On the other hand I sometimes listen to really calm tones or sounds of rain or ocean when I can't sleep and feel stressed. It helps me take bad thoughts away and calms me down. To work efficient I do it in silence and at the desk and eliminate distractions.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?

Music has an unquestionable influence on human mood. Her listeners intuitively choose songs that are right for them. 3. I drink a coffee and listen to music so as to increase my productivity. In addition I try to find quite places without things that can distract me. Moreover I make TO DO List, because it lets me control my effectivness.
1. I don't think listening to music will increase your productivity. Certainly not in my case. Music distracts me at work, so I only listen to it in my free time or while traveling.

2. Only such that long and loud listening causes partial or complete hearing loss and less orientation in the field.

3. I do not use any methods that increase work efficiency. The most important thing is to sleep well and have a lot of energy.
I listen to music almost all the time although I do not think it increases my productivity. Sometime I even turn it off for a moment because i can't focus so i think such statement is false. I do not think music has any influence on the human body except our frame of mind and comfort. I do not use any special methods of increasing work efficiency, I just do something until I do it right.
1. I often listen to music just to separate myself from the environment to increase my focus and so I won't be distracted from everything that happen around.

3. A good sleep before doing something requiring is a good way to go I would say.
1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
Sometimes I listen to poetry at work to cut myself off from others. I don't want to listen to other people's stories around.
Sometimes I listen to music when the current task starts to get boring and I want to make the time a little more pleasant.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
Music has different effects on the human body. First of all, it can calm you down, so often in wellness rooms or just after a massage and relaxing music fly in the background with a prosthetist.
Secondly, music can raise our pressure e.g. in the gym, loud fast music stimulates our body to work.
Listening to classical music supports our contemplation.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
First of all, I drink coffee or an energy drink. It gives me the first kick to work. Sometimes I go for a 10 min walk. Sometimes I break away from the task and read the news on the Internet as a rest and stimulation to further work.

No, i don't do this. I've tried to work with music on the background but in general it distracts me. Even if it is a classic music.
2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
I know just one thing that what kind of music we listen is really affects our mind and in some extent on our lifestyle and behaviour.
3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
Daily routines, I mean, good sleep, proper meal and dose of fresh air, and maybe some sport routine are already enough to feel good physically. And based on my experience if you have clear mind and desire to do something you won't need some methods to increase your work efficiency.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
No, when I work, I don’t listen to music, especially if I’m working on something important. For me, silence and complete focus on the task is the best method to increase productivity.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
I don’t know, I once read that some people during pregnancy listen to classical music because it сan have a good effect on the baby.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
As I already wrote the best way is a complete focus on the task and the absence of irritating factors. When I am busy with something important I fully dive into work and time flies very quickly.
1. Yes, I do. Music allows me to focus on the tasks I have to do. It cuts out the environment around me, so that nothing distracts me.

2. I have heard that music can relax your entire body and decrease your heart rate. This happens of course when it comes to calm music. I think you can achieve quite the opposite effect listening to some heavy, vivid, fast songs.

3. Apart from listening to music I create small todo lists, manage my work time, give myself short breaks and turn my phone off, so that no one will bother me.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?

All day long. I have many playlists on Spotify and based on my mood and my productivity at the moment, I choose the most appropriate playlist which helps me with solving my day-to-day duties and challenges.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?

Music can set your mood for the rest of the day. If you are a sad dog who listen to some tear-squeezing songs or a joyful guy who prefers rock/rap/electro, either way it sets your well-being for most of the day.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?

I listen to shitty music. I really enjoy listening to crap – it helps me with my mood, I instantly cheer up and automatically my productivity increases.

1. I used to try this method, but I prefer to work/learn in silence. In my opinion it doesn`t work for me. Every noise is distracting my attention.

2. Music brings emotions. It is relate with memories and feelings. There are a lot of songs which makes me party or on the other hand there are plenty of songs who makes me sad. For example the sad memories of funeral or ex-girlfriend. The affect is huge.

3. I do not have any method. I just need to find a desk and quiet place. I like to make pauses and breakes for 5 minutes. It helps me work longer and maybe more effecitve.
1. No, I never listen to music while working or studying. It only distracts and prevents me from concentrating. I'm very simply distracted by something else. So when I study, I try to do it in silence, turning off the music. My friends like to work and watch videos on YouTube at the same time. Honestly, I don't understand how they do it.

2. I know that music helps creative people find inspiration. I guess if I would be a painter or a sculptor, I would work listening to music. Also, music helps to relax and reduce stress.

3. The work will be effective only when I won't be distracted. In other words, I need to put my phone away and do all the important things before I work.

1. I usually listen to music while I work.

3. I listen to music
1. I listen to music while studying. Music is my life. I can't do anything without it. Sometimes during the test I remember things because I have a song in my head when I was learning stuff for test.
2. Also I listen to music during workout. Thanks to that I can push myself to the limits. Maybe it's about feeling better, about adrenaline. Just some music (like Rock) helps me to do something better
3. When it comes to learning, I prefer being alone. I don't like when someone disturb me.

1. Sometimes. It depends on what I have to do. If my work requires focusing on
the task or memorizing things then music is distracting to me. But when I just do
some automatic actions without too much thinking about them, music is a nice
addition.
2. Music helps in relaxation. Before or after a stressful day it’s really nice to put
headphones on and just calm down. It can change our emotions, makes us
happier or sadder. It can also be very motivating, gives energy. Not without a
reason people listen to music while running or working out.
3. I don’t have any special methods. To work efficiently I need silence and calm so
I try to ensure myself these conditions. I usually work at home so I lock myself
in my room, ask my family not to disturb me and mute my phone. Then I can be
the most productive. What is more, necessarily I must be rested. Without it I
can’t focus on my work and everything lasts much longer.

1. Yes, I listen to music when I work on something. But not for the productivity, and more for the concentrations and centralizing my thoughts on the project. I listen to not only classical music but any music that doesn't have words or have only a few phrases, as I find out words in musical composition annoying enough to be distracting.

2. I don't know what influence has music in general at the human body. But I can say that music have a huge impact on my emotional state and can suppress or enhance my feelings.

3. I don't have any specific methods. Coffee, music, and lack of distractions - that's everything I need to be efficient enough.

1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?
I wouldn't say I listen to increase my productivity but more likely that I do it to focus more on work than on people around me. Music helps me isolate myself from others to let me do my job.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?
I haven't heard about any but I always thought that music has a great impact on people.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?
I use only music to isolate and coffee to get me more power in the morning. There is no need for me to increase more my productivity at least for now.

1) It depends on what I`m doing. If I need to think about code I`ll do it in silence. But when I`m writing it I usually have music on. If type of work I`m doing is routine, I prefer to listen to the music, it helps me not to become bored.
2) In some strange way music touches our soul. When I`m sad music helps me to feel a little bit happier. Of course there are different types of music, some of them can make you sadder.
3) If I`m working – it`s already good. So I simply do what I should to do. I don’t use special methods to increase efficiency.

1) It depends on the task I have at hand. If the work I do requires me to put some intellectual effort into it, then yes, I do listen to music, and generally, it is classical music just to cut off the distractions of the outside world and concentrate on the task. But if the task requires me to pour all of my brainpower on it, then even classical music becomes a distraction. The only way I know to get myself to maximum efficiency is to find a perfectly silent place void of all distractions and spend 10 to 30 hours on one task, and this one task only.
2) That is a fascinating topic to researh, but sadly I'm totally clueless about it.
3)Get rid of everything that can break your concentration on the topic. And by everything, I mean EVERYTHING. No phones, no social networks, no excess of drinks, so you have to go to the toilet, no noise, no people who may be able to bother you... I think the point is clear enough.
1. Do you listen to music while you work to increase productivity?

Yes I do listen to music to increase my productivity, but sometimes it doesn’t work or makes it even worse because I concentrate on the music and not the task.

2. What other influence of music on the human body do you know?

It can really affect our mood, for example listening sad songs when you are sad makes you even more miserable, and listening happy music can really brighten your day.

3. What methods of increasing work efficiency do you usually use?

I don’t have any specific methods. I don’t know if you can call it a method but I try to work at night because I’m much more productive, there are almost none distractions and it’s really important for me because I get distracted really easily.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
