Week 5 [12.11-17.11.19] What is hidden in the underwater depths?

Every day, scientists make new discoveries, engineers build the machines of the future, astronauts explore space.
And, it would seem that we already know so much about our planet. But there's something that's shrouded in mysteries and riddles. Oceanic world.
Nowadays, we have explored only 3% of the water and 97% of it remains - unknown.  What's in there, in the depths? The emptiness? Or the new world we're about to discover?
In this video, David Gallo, tells about amazing creatures living in depth of the ocean. Each of them is unique and possesses skills that we could use in our lives.
Questions:

  1. What's the most unusual animal you know?
  2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
  3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life?  Which area?

A few years back the creator of Avatar, James Cameron was descending into the Mariana trench, and he was shooted some short videos to use in his documentary about what kind of animals was living and surviving down there.
Here is a video from there: https://gfycat.com/breakableharmoniousasiansmallclawedotter-nature

3- Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Maybe.

1. The most unusual animal I know is a platypus. It's a very strange mammal which lives partially in the wather. As far as i know he lives in Australia and is an endemit. What makes him so special is that despite being a mammal, he lay eggs.

2. Of course. I really like programs about nature, so I would love to get new information about it. I have no idea what can be found there. I'm not an oceanographer, so I can't even imagine what can exist in such different conditions.

3. Possibly. Such creatures should be well adapted to extreme conditions. Maybe by examining their mechanisms we can learn a lot about adapting to different conditions.
1.What's the most unusual animal you know?
axolotl mexican

2.Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I always was fascinated about oceans depths and creatures that can live there. I think we can find there some strange creatures that can live in a dark in such hard life conditions.

3.Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Maybe if we study them enough and learn how those skills works.
1. What's the most unusual animal you know?
I think for the absolute winner I chose here fish, which once was incredibly popular on the Internet and many memes appeared with it. Of course, we are talking about "the ugliest fish in the world". Its real name is "Blobfish". And of course the photo below, you must know it:
https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/1019960662561382401-png__700.jpg

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Sure I would like to know. I think that only perverted creatures that have adapted to life in total darkness and great pressure live at enormous depths. Departing from animals, I think that at the very bottom we can find practically anything, maybe the bones of ancient animals, maybe the remains of ancient civilizations (by the "ancient", I mean very very ancient), maybe we will discover something that will completely change the way we live, or release some ancient evil or power. Yeah, I know, I like fantasy.

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think glowing in the dark would be a pretty useful skill. I suspect that everyone would like to have the power to turn on or off the light on every call. It could be used by practically anyone, if you could control the intensity of light.
1. What's the most unusual animal you know?
clownfish, beautiful and can change their sex as needed. I wonder if people would often use this opportunity?

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Of course, I would like to know what is deep in the ocean. I think there is a lot of algae, garbage, and dead fish. There is no light there, so I guess everything breaks down there.
Possibly my fish have their own punk club there.

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think it can be applied to our lives.
I think that one of the most unusual animals I have ever heard of is Anglerfish. It is amazing for me because this fish’s jaws are bigger than its whole body and this little light growing out of its head, just luring it’s pray in the darkness to the sure death. Pretty scary image if You would ask me. I am very interested in what is in the ocean depths. I have no idea what we could find down there, but I love to imagine that it looks similar to the one game that I know. Lately I was playing Subnautica REALLY cool game where player incarnate a castaway human on unknown planet filled with just water. During the game we can explore whole rich underwater world which looks just stunning. I recommend for everyone to play this game just for a while. I was totally absorbed by it just after few minutes of gameplay. I think that some of this creatures skills would be very useful for humans. For example, it would be perfect for military to use such a great camouflage like octopuses has.

1. Blobfish - it looks like big bogey.

2. Of course I've always been curious what's in the depths of the ocean. People have explored the deepest depths but only for a several minutes because the preasure is too high and the light doesn't reach there - it's completly dark. I wonder if we iluminated all depths of Marianna Trench, what would we find out there.

3. I think the skills might be applied in our life.

Vulture bee it really get me scratching my head about how it produce honey from carcass.

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I would like to but I believe I will be long dead before it happens. Space is easier because of thing, the environment is the same, unless you go close to the sun of course, while in depths the lower you go the pressure is higher and it is hard for our equipment right know. I don't know propably some really strange creatures that never even heard of a sun, maybe Atlantis and C'tulhu

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Yes the octopus trick with changing color and pattern would be nice for the photographs or biologist to get close to animal and observe them.

Panda ants - a specie of wasps that have extremely painful stings and due to white & black hair coloration are similar to pandas.

Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?

Of course yes - like it was mentioned we still didn't explore 97% of the ocean so there has to be many magnificent creatures out there. Maybe we would be able to learn something useful from them?
I have no idea what might be out there but since a lot of them would be living in complete darkness in depths in the oceans then they must be somehow different from the ones we know.

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I was amazed by the ability to octopus to adapt to the environment. It could be applied in military section for camouflage.

Many of those depth-living-marine-animals look preety unusual for me, thats why I will focus on the land animal. The most unusual land animal I know is Venezuelan Poodle Moth, its fairytale look is just preposterous.

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I certainly would be intetested. There may be some monstrous disonaurs-like animals in the depths of the ocean. The depths are so unexplored that there might be just anything there.

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Yes, definitely the octopuses skills would be more than suitable for the army usage. I mean its ability to change their color to fit in the nearest surrounding.

Giraffe, probably. Like how a unicorn -- a horse with a horn is not real but a brachiosaurus-moose-camel-leopard-horse is?
Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I would be interested in studying oceanology, but I can tell you, that 100% there are plastic bags and litter. Sadly, but I think ocean life will go extinct way before we get a chance to study it, or even find out that those species ever existed.
Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Skills of the underwater creatures? But, they are already applied in real life -- by the underwater creatures in underwater life.
1. The Babirusa, it's a wild boar animal with a horn on its forehead. This is not an ordinary horn, the animal must constantly be sawing it if it does not do it often enough, the horn may collapse and pierce the skull of its owner, which of course can lead to death. It's amazing that the animal that has to fight its own body has survived for so long, also it shows how goofy nature and evolution can be.

2. Depths of the oceans are super interesting topic and i would love to know more about it. It' inscredoble how small we know about our planet.

3. The first thought that comes to my mind is the active camouflage that could be used by the military, or by artists to create outstanding paintings etc.
1. The world is full of unusual animals and I find it fascinating. It’s not easy choosing just one of them. Flying snakes, lizards running on water, octopuses with an impressive intelligence, camouflage and an ability to squeeze themselves through a tiny hole. Talking of some weird-looking animals you just need to look into the depths of the ocean. Personally, my favorite is goblin shark - this pal is creepy and funny at the same time.
2. Yes, it would be really interesting, I’d like to see what other awesome living creatures dwell in there.
3. Some of their natural mechanisms used for adaptation could be implemented in our lives.
1.What's the most unusual animal you know?
The most amazing creature I know is Harpy Harpyja. It is a huge bird that has claws the size of an adult male's hand. Can hunt a deer on its own.

2.Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I'm more interested in the land animal world. However, the underwater world also seems amazing. The very fact that life goes on in the depths of the darkness is amazing. Fish that developed light because they tempt victims ...

3.Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Hahahaha with the fullness of being ingenious and adapting to the conditions in which we were to be.
1. What's the most unusual animal you know?
I think it’s a Blobfish it’s a fish with a human-like face. They look funny every time I see them
2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Yes, I would be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean and about what is there well probably mostly nothing interesting but, in some parts, there can be anything from old shipwrecks with treasures, destroyed ships and maybe even Atlantis.
3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think mostly in military like camouflage and in submarine construction technology.
1. I do not know such an animal, and moreover I am not interested in nature, although I think that unusual animals are those that are really rare to meet and are in extinction.

2. In the depths of the ocean ... It's hard to say what is there, but certainly many new species of animals whose existence we have no idea. Something new, unique.

3. This question is a bit strange for me and I can't find the right answer to this question.
1. In my opinion - sloths. It's strategy to survive is to be so pathetic, lazy and not attractive animal, that most of the predators just ignore them.

2. I don't know exactly what's in the depths of the oceans, the most important factor being pitch black oceans. I don't think I'm interested to know what lives deep under the oceans

3. I think yes, creatures living in depths of the oceans must have amazing adaptation skills to their habit.
Alex said…
1. The only one that comes to mind is blobfish. I can't think of anything els.
2. I guess there is a whole world of possibilities. and maybe the depth of the oceans is better left alone
3. The camouflage is a pretty great skill to have. and I thin we already are able to hide our agressive side.
African parrot, maybe it is not very special and unique animal on our planet but it is very interesting for me. It can imitate perfectly sounds it heard which is awesome. There are parrots that sing songs and speak whole sentences even though they do not understand our language. I am interested to know what is in the depths of our oceans but I prefer space exploration much more. If it goes about skill of these animals, I don't really think they are very useful to us. Maybe researching their ability to live in such high pressure would give us some useful data but I am not so sure about it.
What's the most unusual animal you know?

I think the giant squid is a very interesting animal. Their tentacles are estimated to be up to 14-meters long and the animal was the reason why the tales of kraken were born. It was even the inspiration for the big creature in the successful movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?

I think it is a very fascinating subject since we know so little about the ocean and what can be found there. I can’t wait to see what scientist will discover in the depths of the ocean in the future, because I can’t imagine what is hidden there.

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?

I think so, for example how some creatures can withstand such a pressure on the bottom of the ocean and machines made by humans are unable to do that and have to stop at a certain depth. That could be helpful in the army or transportation.
What's the most unusual animal you know?
My cat, it's crazy, nothing like any other creature on the whole planet

Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Yeah! I would like to go there and see it with my own eyes if it was ever possible. I have no idea what coul be there

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I don't know, maybe camouflage for the military?? But other than that it's really hard to tell.

What's the most unusual animal you know?
Since we are talking about the depths of the ocean, then perhaps I will mention marine inhabitants. In fact, there are a lot of them, and each animal is unique in its own way and has a number of features. But of the last that I heard about, this is a shovel fish. She has unusual fins on her body that allow her to walk along the bottom of a pond. She can swim, of course, but besides this, she can use her limbs as legs, literally. In general, of course, I was struck by the phenomenon of jellyfish and invertebrates from their group. The fact that they have immortality, if I may say so. For me it is very unusual.

Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Of course, I would be interested to know about this. 2-5% of the world's oceans are studied. It seems to me that every inhabitant of the planet is interested in finding out who his neighbors on the planet. It even seems to me that the study of space is more progressive than the study of the ocean floor. This is a kind of scientific paradox. It seems to me that these two spheres intersect with each other. I think there are many more creatures that will allow us to look at our planet from a different angle. There are many discoveries ahead and this is great.

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think this should be one of the goals for those who study the ocean. Because at the bottom of the ocean completely different conditions. This means that the inhabitants of the ocean, which are still unknown to science, have cool skills. Having studied their principle, you can apply them in various industries. For example, in the same space industry. To be precise, you can learn more about resistance to high pressure, low temperatures and lack of oxygen.
1. It will probably surprise you that I would pick a well-known animal: the kangaroo. Not only it's the biggest marsupial but I'm amazed by the way it starts its life: as a tiny embryo climbing its way up to mothers pouch. See more in this hilarious video: https://youtu.be/gNqQL-1gZF8
2. Yes, however, I would prefer to explore the deeps of the ocean from the comforts of my home as I'm a little scared of what we could find there.
3. If we could replicate the octopus ways of changing colours and textures we could use it in visual arts or as 3D screens, wouldn't it be awesome?

Every creature is unusual because all are unique. But, in my opinion, the most unusual species is human (we also belong to animals), because humans are not at all similar to any other species: both in biological and emotional-mental sense

Would you be interested in knowing the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I can't say I'm a big fan of the sea, but learning something new is always interesting. And as to what is there, I can only answer one thing - a wonderful world of nature that no one has ever seen.

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our lives? Which area?
Well, everything that has been invented by humans is, in essence, only an interpretation of what nature has created, so I think yes, people still have a lot to learn from the various inhabitants of our planet. In what area? I think in everything from food to technology

3. I suppose that there are lot of skills that could be applied in our life. We could use it to cure illnesses meaning medicine or in technology and definitely military.

Every species is unique in its own way, so it's difficult to choose. But if I had to choose, I would choose Phylliidae. It is a small insect that imitate green leaf.

Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
Yes, definitely. I adore watching documentaries about wildlife and snorkeling and I would say that underwater life is pretty interesting and incredibly diversified. I have recently watched 'Life' documentary series on Netflix, so based on what I watched there, I think that depths hide really mysterious and highly adapted creatures.

Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think that people try to adopt a lot of animals' behaviors and skills as evolution showed it just works. I would say that the camouflage abilities of the last creature could be adapted in soldiers' and snipers' suits. The question is, how to achieve that and is that possible.
1. It's hard to say, each animal is unique. But I think rats are amazing animals to me becausethey are very intelligent.

2. I have always been interested in it and often watched movies related to the ocean floor. There live extremely beings about whose existence we do not even know
For example, a fish that has a lamp on the front (I don't know what its name is exactly)

3. It's hard to say but certainly by watching these beings we can learn a lot

1) Most unusual animal for me is gepard. You may think it's a weird choice, because you can see it in for example Warsaw Zoo and it's basically a big cat. However, it really amazes me how fast these creatures can be. This is unusual, they are unusual by theirs feature. How a cat faster than some cars can not be amazing?

2) Although I have watched various materials about depth of an ocean, I think the best one was created by RealLifeLore. It helps you visualize and embrace what we are dealing with. Really recommend that one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE-lAftuQgc

3) I'm sure they could. It's well known fact that nature is a great place if you're looking for inspiration for inventions. These creatures lives in very unusual and unfriendly habitant, so maybe we should get to know why is it possible and bring it in our lives.

And, thank you for sharing this video! It's very fascinating!
1. I think the most unusual creatures live underwater, namely at great depths. Some of them are Сommon fangtooth (https://i2.wp.com/scienceheathen.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/image24-e1423457375373.jpg), Lasiognathus (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4a/5e/25/4a5e254d4c4b4f796c02b672c333b9ba.jpg) (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2c/L_amphirhamphus.jpg) and Saccopharynx. But the most unusual I consider Macropinna microstoma (https://ianimal.ru/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/macropinna_microstoma1.jpg).

2. Yes, I would be interested to know what is in the depths of the oceans. I think it's home to animals we couldn't even imagine.

3. I think the skills of these creatures can help us in medicine. For example, at great depths dwells a worm with incredible regeneration. We could use it to learn how to grow limbs or heal wounds.

1. What's the most unusual animal you know?

It may not be unusual as many people know it quite well, but it sure is extraordinary – a sloth. These lazy to the limit creatures, even though they are mammals, have up to 10 cervical vertebrae which allows them to turn their head 360 degrees. As they are unusually slow, they tend to limit their movement to bare minimum and defecate only once a week. That’s when they are the most vulnerable, as they have to climb down the tree to do so. What’s interesting - as they are not (surprisingly) the fastest mammals in the world, they have well-honed defense mechanism. Their fur is often overgrown with algae, which helps them blend into their environment so well, that predators zoom past without noticing their presence.

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?

As I am a huge fan of all of the living creatures (besides spiders) and nature was always an extremely interesting subject for me I would be very interested to know, what is hiding in the depths of the ocean. Bearing in mind this TED talk I think there is a chance, that there are some wretched, uncomplicated creatures, probably even bigger than we can imagine. It would be cool to explore this whole new world consisting of glowing in the dark, shapeless organisms that we could learn about.

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?

Oh, I would love to have these camouflage skills. I tend to feel overwhelmed and tired of people and need 3-5 minutes for myself, before I can be all friendly and talkative again. I would use that skill to blend in for couple of minutes, gather my thoughts and relax.

Dragon fish. Has huge head along with mouth hole equipped in sharp fangs. Reaches approximately 15 centimeters. It leaves in the depths, around 1500 meters below the water. Occurs in most of the tropical locations over the world.

2. Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?

Depths of oceans are very mystique. This area is not explored properly to this day. I would like to know more about those depths. Animal species that live there are so rare! It drives me crazy to think what abilities they have. For sure a lot of valuable raw materials are there as well. I wish that it would be possible to watch some of those places explored and showed to the world.

3. Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?

Plenty of fishes developed many skills as a result of adaptation. Some of them have produced special light-producing cells. I think that would have an application in electrics.

Electric eels are for sure one of the most unusual animals I can think of. They can kill with electric current and also force their prey to do something they want.
Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I would be very keen to know what is hiding there. Depths of our oceans are a bit like outer space. We know very little about it. The interesting part about oceans is that there is life there. Difference in the pressure on bottom of oceans, makes animals there adapt to it and I think this is the most interesting part about exploration of deep waters.
Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
Nature tends to be very good in adapting to harsh environment. I think we could copy some of traits that we find in animals leaving deep in the ocean. We could use them in helping us explore these parts of the Earth. For example by creating a submarine of certain shape.

1. Slime mold, it’s not an animal, nor it’s a plant. Although that thing is capable of traversing space in an algorithmic way of pathfinding. What’s most interesting that each individual has it’s own algorithm.

2. Yes, I enjoyed episodes of “Blue Planet” and “Blue Planet 2” about deepest inhabitants very much. Those creatures have kind of sedative way of life, there is no resources at all and they usually have bizarre adaptations.

3. No, they are aliens for us.
What's the most unusual animal you know?
There are some species of ants that live in a desert (unfortunately, I don't remember the name), who navigate by stars in the sky! Also in the oldest rain forest lives a huge warm from the age of dinosaurs that shoots glue in insects to immobilize them.
Would you be interested to know what's in the depths of the ocean? And what do you think is there?
I am very interested in creatures living in the depths of the ocean. I think, somewhere there in the dippiest waters should leave something giant, as the pressure there is so high that there could survive only something very big or something very long, but thin. So I'm looking forward to see what's there. It's very strange that people are discovering Space much more that the ocean, while 95% of the ocean are not discovered.
Could the skills of these creatures be applied in our life? Which area?
I think that the strength of ants could be useful in many areas (they can put in 50 times more than their weight). Animals have a lot of very interesting skills, but all of them are used to survive. Humans haven't need to fight for survival anymore.
1. I think that man, so intelligent and spoils so much :)
2. Yes, I would like to. Who knows what is there, maybe another civilization or ancient creatures.
3. It's difficult for me to say I don't specialize in this. But I think that definitely could be used.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
