Week 9 [10.12-16.12.18] Wipe server or the beginning of the end of the world in MMO?

Wipe server or the beginning of the end of the world in MMO?

Who do not know MMO is Massively multiplayer online.
Everyone who played MMO could face such a problem as the entire servers wipe. This moment everyone felt his own way. After all, when they clean up the server, people will lose all their stuff and characters, then they will have to start all over again.

When admins warn about this event, about a couple of days before the start of the wipe, then all the fun begins. At this moment some people go in different ways. Someone comes into a rage, others panicking and there are those to whom this is all indifferent. From the outside, it all looks pretty similar to how the end of the world might have passed in reality.

Each game has this end differently. For example, in WoW, after people are divided into these groups, they decide what to do next, because within a week the end of their work in leveling the characters will pass, and yet not everyone has done everything he wanted in the game. And some of them will try to get epic loot which has a 0.5% chance of falling out.

Perhaps the best option is just to look at how other people yelling in the chat "The server will wipe! We will lose everything!". Or get drunk in the game and quietly spend the last days of the server talking with other players.

For example, in Minecraft the player is likely make a giveaway of his items. Perhaps he will destroy his buildings. He will try to do it epic, so that everyone on the server remembers him. He will spawn the Wither, the boss who destroys everything on his way, and let him into the game world to DESTROY EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE!.

Even on vanilla version in WoW, a similar moment occurred as with Wither in minecraft. One player brought to Stormwind, the main capital of the Alliance, a world boss. He was followed for some time by that player, after he brought him to the city, the boss began to kill all the players and no one could kill him, because when he killed someone he was healed, and there were many low lvl players in the city thant instantly died and, moreover, if he was not killed in 3 minutes, then he used a spell that almost all had one shot. As a result, he cut out the entire settlement.

If you do not take into account the bosses and look at it all from the outside, then this is a very real example of how people would behave if they knew that they only had a week to live. The same panic, attempts to do something that did not have time to do earlier, or attempts to make a mess lastly to everyone else.

Questions
1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)

Comments

I have played Lineage two for a couple of years, those were the times. Now I am pure single player, therefore, unfortunantley, cannot tell my opinion about MMO's topic. Though certainly, I think that compensations or giveaways should take place in such case, no doubt.

MMO is a very popular branch of games. Most people who want to be a hero from favourite universe. Thanks to this kind of game everyone can be who will never be in real world. For instance you want be a knight who use spell then comes MMO games. I’m big fan of MMO games. I experienced whole life play and my favourite MMO games are WoW, ESO, Archage but over time I had to go work and I don’t have time to play. I didn’t encountered wipe server. Probably I could be angry. Everytime someone say it gonna end. I consider that it will never end of the world. I don’t why people waiting for end.
I've played World of Warcraft and Eve Online for many years and I've never encountered a server wipe. Even in the case of this boss in the city - which happened on some different server, it was far from "the end of the world" event you're describing - because after few hours this boss was just removed by the game masters. So I guess this is endemic to some other games.
People usually play MMO games because they offer persistence. Your character will get better, gather more experience and gear, but you will not reach the end of adventure or end of the world. So they can enjoy their growing power, they can enjoy new places, quests, opponents, treasure - for as long as you'd like. So if someone decides to wipe the entire game - all the progress made on our characters, for many it would mean the end of the world indeed. I would just stop playing this game. Why bother to spend so much time on my character if it can just be wiped and I need to repeat everything from the scratch.
And about the real end of the world? I don't know. Depends on what kind of end we are talking about. Everyone will die no matter what? I would probably try to enjoy my last moments, spend more time with people I love, with my friends. But maybe just "end of the world as we know it" - I would probably be more focused on survival. Let's hope we'll never know really :)
I have played only one MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online, and i am still playing it. I really like it, therefore I am not very interesting in trying other MMOs.
I have never encountered servers wipe in Elder Scrolls Online. As I know it never happened in this game. In my opinion, it would ruin everything, people are spending hundreds of hours to level up their characters, gather gold, collect items etc and suddenly it would be gone. In my opinion many players would leave the game forever. However I encountered something similar in world of tanks, which is not exactly mmo. I was playing in beta version of this game, and when they switch to “normal” version, every account was reset. It was annoying, but world of tanks is fairly simple game, in opposite to most mmo, therefore, I was able to regain my tans quite fast.
If the end of the world came I would be quite happy, because I like post apocalyptic climates.

In one game there was a real end of the world, as the project was closed. I did not play it myself, but I heard about the fact that a couple of hours before shutting down the servers, the developers held an event in which they fought against the players. It seems like this should be the end of the world in MMO :D
Well, wipe servers are not so terrible than closing it completely.
1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
Yes, I used to play some MMO in my life, but not many. My first one was Tibia and I totally regret that I have not been in Runscape club, it seems way better game. Then I was playing Guild Wars, but not for so long, then I've bought WoW and it was probably best MMO I've ever played. After WoW I saw some MMO's but I thought that they are way worse than Blizzard game so I have stopped doing it and I have not played any MMO like for 8 years or something. It's really time consuming ;P

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
I have not.
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
I think that I would die, like all of us.

Yes, I have played World of Warcraft a lot a official as well as on pirate servers and didn`t experience any server wipe outs. I have seen people doing wipe outs on purpose and I guess it is good experience for Blizzard tech support, because they could have tested abilities of their servers.

I played in the league of legends, a fanastic game that stole my heart but unfortunately I do not have time to play it.
I have never encountered server cleaning because I do not play games that have this option.
I think that if the end of the world came and I knew it before, I would fulfill my dream and steal a Ferrari; D

No, I've never played any MMO game. I am not the type of person who play games. The only type of games I spend time on is FPS. One of my favorites is CounterStrike. I enjoy not only playing this game, but also I like watching the big tournaments and event related to it.

When the end of the world would come, I would do something illegal for sure. :-)

Only gta san andreas roleplay, which held more than 300 players on server, (there were servers that could handle 1000 players on one server - now compare this to todays gta 5 online...)

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
Yes, but you were able to apply for refund.

3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
Steal, eat and drink
I have played Lineage 2, and WoW in old times of Burning Crusade patch, but i never enjoyed MMO even though i always liked the idea behind this genre. I have encountered wipes in other online games, one of the recent ones was MTG:Arena wipe after the closed beta. I think that attitude about wipe always depends on the circumstances, for example wiping card game after closed beta with compensating for a time and money spent is a usually a good thing, but wiping WoW with every new patch that you pay for , for no other reason but to hook up players anew is stupid. If the end of the world came i would chill, forgive everyone i hold grudge against and ask them for forgiveness.
I played couple MMO's some time ago. I did avoid the biggest ones since they tend to be crowded to the edges and uninspiring most of the time.

I went through couple server wipes and its not pretty, veterans leave, new players rejoice, and the community more often than not scatters since alot of stories get invalidated.

If an end to our world would come i bet most of us would not be able to do anything to save ourselves , but undoubtedly i would try to save myself my family try to survive as always.

Playing in a lot of MMO games, although probably the most in Tibia (years of my youth) but also in WoW, AO, Guild Wars 2 etc ...
Have you encountered wipe servers?
Yes, when I was playing Wow, I was in the progress guild, that is, who is trying to make the raid as soon as possible. During such attempts I am practically whipping up hundreds of times, what do I do after such a wipe? Naught by experience, I know it lasts until we all show our best skills. What would I do if the world were to end? Probably nothing, I tried to fight it somehow, but can I do something?
I've played "mu online", "wow" and "lineage 2". It was about 4-5 years ago when i played it last time, but i enjoyed playing a lot. Once i played on a server that was a huge playground with around 5000+ unique playes and after successfull start, they wiped all the characters out after 2 weeks. It was a catastrophe. I spent so much time for it and they just said: - "sorry". I don't think about it now, i will think about it later, when the end came.

I have played multiple MMOs through my life. Probably the first and definitely the most special for me was "Guild Wars" in which I played with my older brother and I have many pleasant memories. I haven't encounter any server wipes, only the server on which I had my characters has been merged with another because the playerbase was too small. If there was a total wipe then I would be probably quite irritated and I would be sure if I would play anymore in this game. I don't know what I would do if the world was about to end. It depends on how much time I had left.

1. No, I've never played any MMOs.

2. I've never experienced it personally, but I've heard that the WoW server was reset due to the infamous Corrupted Blood Incident. It was a virtual pandemic that lasted one week. The most interesting thing about that incident was the players behavior. Their behavior was very similar to the behavior of the masses during a real plague. People were moving out of big cities, etc. It appears that the reaction to the in-game incidents is not so different from our reaction to the real-life incidents.

3. I honestly don't know. What would be the point of doing anything if everything was about to be gone.

1. Personally I've been a devoted MMORPG fan since the release of the famous world of warcraft. Having previously played warcraft 3 it felt like an obligation to await the newest product which was yet to change the shape of gaming industry as a whole.

I've never encountered a server wipe of anysort myself. However through stories of my friends the concept has not been unknown to me. The only "server wipe" that has affected me would be the end or warhammer online game, where after years of mmo fun the company has shut down completely.

Frankly, I'd make sure to say my goodbyes to those dearest to my heart, as well as eat a good hearthy meal with those who would be willing to spend their last moments with me.
I’ve played a lot of Guild Wars 2 and even more of Final Fantasy XIV. While I didn’t personally experience a server wipe, FFXIV is known for its “rise from the ashes” as the game was pretty much remade from scratch after the initial failed release. After a server wipe that became the part of the lore – a Calamity, during which one of the moons descended and destroyed the land. The game has seen great success, and has commemorated all of the people playing the game before the wipe by adding all the names of characters to the game credits that you get to see when following the main campaign. An example of wipes I did participate in was from the time when I played a lot of Minecraft on American servers. Most of the time wipes were a quiet thing, as a server without active players was cleaned and prepared for a new game, but there were times when an active server was being wiped, and that usually resulted in grand parties where all players gathered at one place and celebrated all the fun that they had with the current world – and were getting excited for the new one to come. In case of a more… real world wipe – I’d probably prefer to spend it with family and friends, reminiscing all the good times that we’ve had together.

1. I was playing in WoW but only for 20 hours during a trial version. I was nice experience but I decided to not buy full version because I didn't want to play in a game which is consuming so much free time.

2. I encountered with wiping servers in Rust but it is normal practise in this type of game. You are right that players baheve a bit different when they are concious that server will wipe in near time. ;)

3. I will spend rest of my time with people who I love. I know that it is a cliché but it's true. ;)
Thank you for the article. I played a lot of online games, but my favorite is the Second World War. I think this game is out of generations. Both teenagers and people over fifty play it. Everyone finds something for themselves in it. Everyone finds their favorite version of the game. I always played on quality servers and did not encounter wipe. But I heard a lot of stories about it. This is a very unpleasant situation, and the owners of the server may lose their clients due to such nuances. For many players, the items in the game are as important as those purchased in the real world. After all, they spent a lot of effort, nerves and time to get them. End of the world? But then most likely I will die like all of humanity. But if nevertheless, I manage to survive, then I will fight for my life.
So actually I did not play this genre of games yet. But I know what means wipe. And wipe it of course – "accident"! Everything that you made in a game before, will be lost! It is some kind of doomsday and it is possible to have a really good time. And if I knew that doomsday will come in reality soon. I would think and became sad …
I have played in Minecraft, WOT, GTA5 MP and this is cool experience.

Usually when game is wipe I loose desire to play in it because I don't want to do same things that I have done before to achieve result but sometimes I would like to wipe server to start build world with new knowledge about how better to do something in different cases.

I think if end of the world came I will try to implement all my dreams that I want to do but at this time this can be forbidden by laws or material needs.
1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
I played WoW for over a year. Had a lot of fun with this game.

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
Personally I faced wipe in other game called Rust. It didn't bother me, at least not that much. I don't play games that involve gathering items for sake of gathering them. Usually you need those items to achieve some goals or beat somekind of enemy. After I have done that I don't care whether those items are taken away from me.
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
Probably I would try to have some good time before it happens!

There is one MMO type game I've played. It was Metin2. It's so stupid that I'm ashamed to admit it. This is the largest absorber of time that really does not give us anything.

Fortunately, I did not meet with it, but many of my friends were already so and very pissed off.

I would play MMO! ( It's just a joke ). Of course I would like to spend my last moments with my loved one (I will not tell you the details).
1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
I have played in Lineage 2, WoW when I was a kid for a while. This is differently not my genre.
2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
Hm, I have never heard to game designers will do a swipe server after years of games.
I would leave the game forever :)
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
I think I would be with my family or was doing something crazy :)

I have played WoW, Eve, 4Story, Runes of Magic, Metin 2 and few more games. I spent a lot of time exping etc. for now I think it was waste of time because I played a lot, not just a few hours a day.

For now I think I would do nothing just change server or game.

Hmmmm, maybe I would spend more time with friends or do some stuff what I didn’t do in my life yet.

I've tried to play Perfect World, but haven't got into it.

I've encountered wipes on some Minecraft servers. Lost a couple of diamonds there.

If the end of the world came, I'd probably die *insert guess I'll die pic*. I don't think I would be a good survivor.
Yes, I was playing MMO when I was studying at school. It was a game called Perfect World.

No, I have never encountered wipe servers. I started playing at the official server. Then after 2 years I sold my heroes and started playing at other ‘unofficial’ servers and also created self one with my friends. I didn’t play PW for the last 7 years, so I don’t know what I would be doing in such situation.

Every person images the end of the world in different ways. I’m as a Christian imagine it in the way that described in the Bible, so I don’t know what I exactly will be doing, but I know that I will be safe.

I have played World of Warcraft mentioned above, Silkroad, Guild Wars and many others. I love mmo games because they offer so much things to do and people to meet.

I encountered server wipes many times in World of Warcraft on private servers and once in wow server and it was really crazy what was happening in main cities of the game. What I did is I was talking with my friends what is happening and observed from far away what is happening. The best wipe in my oppinion is the one with a plague that was brought by hunters/warlocks pets to main city and bizzard had to restart the server because it was that massive. I heard that even scientists used this event to find out what will be people reaction when end of the world would take place.

If end of the world would came I think I would meet with all my friends and do something crazy that we all wanted to do but never tried.

1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
Yup, when I was young boy I used to play Metin2. I know it's... bad. But still, I was child, it was easy, there was grind, gamble etc, addictive. Then I used to play few japanese MMORPGs and then played Guild Wars 2 for some time. I never understood hype about WoW, it was so boring to me when I tried to play it :D
2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
Nope, never experienced that. Buuut it can be simillar to Diablo2 Ladders, okay, they don't delete anything, but prices are different, not many people play Non-ladder etc. Reset of ladder is every 6-8 months.
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
Hmmm.. Spending time with loved ones, try to die painless death :/

1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?

Yes, I did. Tibia, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars. I think that Tibia is my favorite one, but I'm not playing games anymore.

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?

Unfortunately I did. I played on Open Tibia Servers(OTS) - it's like private server - few times and I experienced wipes. I was just soooo angry, because all my time spent on this server was useless.

3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
I would steal some badass car, money and have some fun ;).
I have played World of Warcraft for a long long time. Actually, I’m still playing it every year for about a month when new expansion is released. I started my history with Warcraft when I was about 10 years old and played Warcraft 3 RTS for hours. Then when WoW was released, I went completely crazy about it. I spent about 6 years playing WoW and if all my characters, all my gear and basically all my achievements would just disappear due to a server wipe I would probably be very angry. Fortunately, my server was never wiped out, so I can’t really refer to this particular topic.
If real end of the world would happen, I think I would like to try everything there is to try that I haven’t done before. I guess it’s not very original answer but it’s true.
1. Have you played MMO and if so, which ones?
Metin ! I loved it when I was young.

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?
Fortunatelly not - I was playing a lot, and it has to be painful when all Your effort is gone.

3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)
I would try to do something crazy - maybe I would try to gather a huge team and attack some boss in the game ?
I love MMO games and I have played them a lot(too much I think). The most I played WoW, and it was my favorite game for quite long. Before wow I use to play many other, small titles, like KalOnline which had 200 players on server and that’s all.
I have encountered a wipe server once. It wasn’t nice feeling, but I decided to switch a game. Even if I had to play from the beginning, I played a different game which brings different experience.
If the end of the world came, we really could do nothing. I will try to use my time, which left till the end, the best as I can.

- No, I have not encountered wipe servers, but I would be really angry that my whole progress and time which I spent in this game was taken away from me.
3. And what would you do if the end of the world came? (not in game)
- I would probably spend my last day with my family and I would make a pizza.

I've played WoW (World of Warcraft). It's very addictive, and I find so much fun in it, but after some time you will find that it's a waste of time. I would prefer to learn something, than to spend 4+ hours every day on playing.

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?

No, but if I would - I think that I would be very frustrated.

3. And what would you do if the end of the world came?(not in game)

I would try to do some crazy things, but right now nothing comes to my mind
1. I have played many MMOs: Silkroad Online, Cabal Online, WoW, GW2, Warframe, Allods, SWTOR, LOTRO, ESO and many more. A long time ago I was beta testing every new MMORPG game I found interesting. What a time...
2. Sometimes after beta tests there were wipes but it wasn't big deal because beta.
3. Well... I would get in touch with everyone I've ever meet, said that it was pleasure to meet them, then made a barbecue with my family and some friends. At the barbecue we would talk about all the good and funny things that happend to us, show some pictures from travels and have fun. And I would laught at people who will record this party :D

2. Have you encountered wipe servers? And what would you do or do if your game there was a wipe?

Ive played many mmos and i think wipe on one hand is bad for people that are in top of ranking but for many others it openes doors to get some fresh experience without knowing that they won't achive anything more then poeple that spent 10000 hours playing just one game. Also it brings many people back as wipe often means new content or Really old content what in many cases is really good idea and new life for a game.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
