Week 9 [10.12-16.12.18] Is traveling alone worth trying?

As solotravelworld.com states:
While you may discover solo travel by chance — because you don’t have anyone to travel with when you have the time and the money to go — you will likely do so again by choice.
I decided to quote this statement because that's precisely what happened to me. Two weeks ago I was on my first solo trip ever in Milan, Italy. It was terrific, and now I'm planning more! In this post, I would like to share with you what I learned after being alone for a couple of days abroad in a completely different country and share my experiences of how I felt.

Why alone?

Unfortunately, not everything in life always goes according to the plan. That's what happened to me. One night I spotted very cheap tickets to Milan and decided to buy them thinking that one of my friends for sure will join me because such promotion does not happen so often. Time went by, I was asking more and more people, but no one was willing to go this time with me. They either didn't have enough time, money or something that they didn't have control over was stopping them from joining me. Accepting the fact that I might not find any companion. I started thinking of going alone. I had a few conversations with friends people who already this and all were strongly positive about going somewhere alone. After considering all the pros and cons, I've made my mind and decided to give it a try.

You have control

The most significant advantage of solo traveling over going somewhere with friends is that you won't have to make compromises. When you are in the group, you discuss where to go consistently. The larger the group is, the harder is to create a comfortable and satisfying plan.  If you are alone, you do what you want, when you want, and no one judges any of your decisions except you.

You can focus on your interests

You have an unusual hobby like me that you like to admire casual corridors and building entries in Italy? No problem. You can spend as much time as you won't taking photos of a thing you like. You can change your day plan just because you passed by a place that meets your interest like a museum of modern art. That's another beauty of being somewhere alone. You focus on yourself and your own interest no matter what they are.

You have time to think

You are alone, so you have lots of time to think. It's an excellent option if you are looking for a time to get rest – spending time with your thought is one of the most effective ways of filling up your battery.

You meet new people

When you are in the group, usually you spend time together, and you don't think much about making new friends. However, when you are alone, after walking a whole day through the city, you will look for a person to talk with. I strongly recommend you trying Hang-out feature of Couchsurfing App. It's truly remarkable, you can meet lots of inspiring, and easygoing people who are also solo travelers and have tons of intriguing stories to share!

How does it work? RollieOnTheRoad has made a good explanation:

Important note: Buy insurance!

That's an important thing to have no matter where you go, either alone or with the group. You never know when you would need some medical help, so always be prepared!

Traveling alone always make memorable experiences. This solo trip was one of the most intensive concerning experiences trips this year. I have fallen in love with solo traveling, and I encourage you to try it too! You won't regret it!

Questions:

  1. Have you ever tried solo traveling? (if not what stopped you from going somewhere alone)
  2. Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?
  3. Do you buy insurance for all your trips?

Unfortunately, not. Every time I traveled - I traveled either with friends or family. To be honest, I want to go somewhere by myself but I am a little bit afraid of it.
I've heard about couchsurfing but never used it. There is so much things I want to try.
I traveled around United States by myself, and I will tell you that while traveling by yourself can have obvious advantages, even for me, pure introvert, it was... Kind of missing something. It was still lots of fun and I loved that country, but during my travels I was constantly feeling that I am missing some flavour. There are moments that are best spent alone, and some -- best shared with somebody. Travels are certainly made for at least couples if not groups.
I have a great experience about traveling solo and with some friends. In my opinion it depends on a few things like what type of person you are and where are you going to travel. For note, I'm crazy about mounties. So when I fist time went to hiking alone I was extremely exited and I loved being alone, listening to the silence in the mountains is one of the most thrilling feelings ever. In few months I went to Prague for a couple of days. It was my first time there. Surprisingly for me, I noticed that I was totally bored alone. In a huge city like that with so many people having fun outside the streets, I felt a bit sad that I couldn't talk to anyone.
No, I haven't, although I have a few friend who are hosting travelers.
Yes, I do. Fortunately, I haven't had any issues concerning the insurance, but I heard different stories form friends that it's better to have an insurance.

1.Have you ever tried solo traveling? (if not what stopped you from going somewhere alone)
I haven't tried to travel alone. I have fears that something may happen to me, and no one will help me.

2.Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?
Heard about Couchsurfing, but no experience. I guess I'll never use couchsurfing. There are different people, and it is unclear what they have in mind.

3.Do you buy insurance for all your trips?
If I buy a trip through a travel agency, then it must be there, but I have never used it.
I have never tried solo traveling. I have always had friends/family members / at now fiancée who has the same interests as me so taking a trip somewhere with them was always a pleasure. I have heard about Couchsurfing and I think it is a great initiative for those who are looking for accommodation while traveling (especially for those who are alone because it is much easier to find one-bed :D) but I have never met anyone who used it. I do buy insurance for trips to remote and/or dangerous places because you never know what can happen to you.

So all that's stopps you is yourself? It's a strong enemy for, but I'm sure you will be all to overcome your fears and go somewhere alone! I cross my fingers for this! Instead of wanting start trying it ;)

I don't have much experience - just this one trip for now, but I would say that it all depends on a person. For sure solo traveling is not for everyone and you should not stop traveling with your friends! From time to time it's a perfect way of cleaning your mind and ordering all your thoughts. After being somewhere once alone, you can invite your friends and visit the same place once more!

That's why I encourage you to try Couchsurfing hangouts feature! I was in the same position as you were. I was tired of being alone for the whole day, after that, I downloaded the app and saw that there were about 50 people who were felling the same as me. We hanged out, grabbed some beers, went sightseeing and made friends! Don't be afraid to talk to strangers too, especially if you are in the bar or other places with lots of people. It's just a matter of starting the conversation, after that it just starts and you can let the flow be.

That's why all people who are on Couchsurfing have their profiles. You can read about their hobbies, interest, what people they are and see if they have recommendations from other people. I'd say after a careful reading of their profile and seeing if they have any recommendation you can be sure that they find people and won't cause you any problems.

Unfortunately, I have never travelled alone. I think that could be a great experience but I have never had enough courage to go somewhere by myself. Additionally, I was afraid that it would not be fun to go somewhere without friends or family.
Yes I heard about couchsurfing and I had used it at the beginning of my Erasmus exchange before I have found a suitable flatshare.
I always buy insurance for all my winter and long trips, when it comes to short trips e.g.: during weekends usually I don’t buy insurance.
Like most people before me, I have not tried travelling solo. I really enjoy going abroad with my girlfriend and if I were single I would probably travel with some of my friend/friends. Solo travelling may be more chilling, thought. Maybe someday I will try it, but for now I think that travelling with someone is more fun.
I have never heard of Couchsurfing, sorry ;(
I try to buy insurance for most of my trips, especially that I do not use any travelling agency - I plan everything by myself.

I have never tried solo traveling. It's not because of the fear but because I don't feel a need to travel alone. I just like traveling with my fiancee. I heard about Couchsurfing but I have never tried it. I don't think I'd like to sleep in somebody's house in any other country without knowing this person, but I know people that did it and they say it was okay. I do buy insurance for every trip, because I know that even if something happens I will be secured from the financial side. If I had to choose between insurance of flight class upgrade, I'd definitely go for an insurance. You never know what can happen in life.

Unfortunately, I never found out alone and I do not need it, I would feel alone and I would be afraid that if something happened nobody would help me.
I have never heard about couchsurfing and I think that this community is without major goals in life and want to experience the most extreme.
Yes, I always buy such trips because you never know if, for example, you will never go to a hospital, and there are unimaginable costs
I usually travel alone, its easier to manage and plan everything if u dont have to coordinate with another person,
I ve heard about Couchsurfing but i haven't met anyone who had done so to talk about it, and im not really interested in it.
For me its important to have valid insurance cover wherever i go is it alone or with someone, so yes i do always care to my insurance before a trip.
Unknown said…
I've never travelled alone, in fact I've never even come up with such an idea, maybe because I'm a sociable person and I'm unlikely to go somewhere solo. I've never heard of Couchsurfing either
As far as insurance is concerned, I always take it out, it is not expensive, and I am always protected against any accident, especially since I often travel on skis and everything can happen there.
Unknown said…
I did not travel alone, because I associate rest and travel with either my wife or a group of people. I didn’t get the idea to drive alone, but I had an idea to hitchhike, but I couldn’t realize it.
Couchsurfing - I heard about this community, but it's scary to live with a person you don't know at all. Especially when it’s free, I don’t believe that there is something free.
Yes, of course, you never know what can happen. I'm generally like planned vacations. I am much calmer when I know how I will get or where I will live. I do not exclude unforeseen situations, but for a start, I have a plan.

I have never considered traveling alone, it has always seemed to me that it wouldn't be fun when you couldn't share your thoughts about the things you see with anyone. But of course the arguments that you brought make sense and there are some advantages of traveling alone.
I haven't heard about it, so I can't say too much about it, but its idea seems cool to me. :)
It depends on the time which my travel will take. If it's just couple of days then I don't bother with insurance, but when it's a week or longer then I buy it.
1. Have you ever tried solo traveling? (if not what stopped you from going somewhere alone)
Yes, I have been travelling alone trough Italy some years ago and I remember it as very challenging experience. Not everybody were speaking English and I was prepared only with some basic Italian expressions so sometimes it was hard to communicate. I enjoyed being alone but after some days I was missing a company and person to share my journey with.

2.Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?
I have heard about it but I haven't used it yet. From one hand, I think it can be dangerous when you are going to someone's house and you actually don't know anything about this person. From the other hand, I know people who are couchsurfing and they never had any bad experience.

3.Do you buy insurance for all your trips?
Yes, I always buy insurance. It is always better to be prepared in case of any emergency.

Travel alone has its own advantages. Traveling with friends has other advantages. For example, if I want to travel to a country like Nepal, I prefer to travel alone and if I want to travel to the Netherlands, I would like to go with my close friends on this trip, the purpose of the trip is that I decide to go alone or go with my friends.
Yes,I heard about Couchsurfing but never had any experience with it.I have a lot of friends who use this service and have different experiences.
Yes I use insurance for all my trips.

I only go alone on short trips when I have to think seriously about something or get tired of something. I never wanted to go alone on my own journey. I prefer to travel with my girlfriend.

I've never heard of it before. I learned about this from your article.

I never buy extra travel insurance if I do not have to. This is a very good idea to buy such insurance. I never remember to deal with matters related to insurance.

No, I have never tried solo traveling because nobody can help you and you have to rely on yourself or unknown people. When I'm in new place I like to feel safely and my friends/family can make it and that's why I don't like solo traveling and I don't want to try it. I consider travels as kind of rest and I like to minimize stressful situations.
No, I have never heard about Couchsurfing but I think that is good idea for solo travelers (who want to meet new people).
Yes, of course I always buy insurance for my trips because health is the most important for me. It can be unnecessary when you are travelling near to your country but when you are choosing places with different climate, food and diseases it's require.

1. No, I've never tried solo travelling before. It was due to lack of time, money and motivation. I was talking about it with my co-worker the other day and I realized that those were just mere excuses. He said that if you do not have money you can always pay with time and you can always find time if you are motivated enough.

2. No, I've never heard of Couchsurfing and I've never had any experiences with people from this community.

3. Yes, I do.
I think it is great idea to travel alone. Especialy in foreign countries. For sure, fistly you should try it on smaller scale just to get some experience. Then go all in. You meet many new people. You are not responsible for anybody. Also you are the only one that makes decisions. Its awesome. Also you learn much more both culture and language. I think its best possible way of traveling if you want to travel for real not just lay your butt on beach.

2. Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?
No, however it might be interesting and i might try it next time travelling. It's a great opportunity to meet new people.
3. Do you buy insurance for all your trips?
Yes, you never know what might happen. Life is precious.
Have you ever tried solo traveling? (if not what stopped you from going somewhere alone)
I have never traveled alone. First of all, it's a bit scary. And secondly, it's boring and not interesting. It is clear that you can also admire new places yourself, but it is much more pleasant to share it with someone, to share your impressions.
Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?
Yes, I heard about this site, even one time I planned to take travelers in my apartment.
Do you buy insurance for all your trips?
Never did it on purpose. Sometimes travel agencies make insurance. And when I go on my own, I hope for good luck.

No I’ve always traveled with friends, girlfriend or family. What stoped me. Probably a fear of being alone in foreign place. Usually its much more pleasant for me to travel in group. It’s possible to enjoy new things with your friends.
Yes I’ve heard of couchSurfing but I’ve never encountered anyone from its community.
I always buy insurance. No matter where I go. It’s one of the moste important things on my check list before I go somewhere

I did give solo travelling a go, it's a nice way to get to know yourself if you happen to do it at a right location. It's a thing everyone should give a go at least once in their lifetime.

I did hear of couchsurfing, it's a great way of making new friends and getting to know the culture better.

No I'm not getting insurance for each trip I take.

So, next time when you will be travelling with your fiancée I encorague you to try it! Believe there are so many interesting people there whou can share lots of extraordinary stories with you!
I’m such a rare person, who doesn’t like traveling at all. But despite this fact, I have traveled a lot in my life. Have I ever tried solo traveling? Hmm, it depends on what travel purpose. I traveled to Poland ‘solo’, but in studying purpose.
Yes, I have heard about Couchsurfing service, but I have never used it.
I’m buying insurance when the trip requires it. For example, to stay in Poland I need to have an insurance for all the year.

1. I have never tried solo traveling but I have to say that I can't imagine to go on a holiday without my girlfriend. We like spending holidays together and when we have free time we prefer to spend this time together. ;)

2. I have never heard of couchsurfing and I hadn't any experiences with people from its community. :(

3. I always buy insurance for all my trips because I feel more safety abroad when I have it.
I did't, its not for me I like spending time with my friends, I am not sure what to do when solo in travel it would be boring i guess, i know that you can meet people there but its not the same. I think studies and work stoped me from travelling a lot I simply don't have time for that.
Yeah I've heard about coachsurfing, I have never tried it , maybe beacause I am distrustful person and I don't like the idea to sleep in strengers home if I would be a girl then definately NO, especially in the times we live in.
Yes I do buy insurance everytime I go abroad, its not that expensive and sometimes could save you from unescessary expenses.

I've never tried solo travelling but I really want to try and I'm going to do it in the future. I need only one small thing - the reason. For me the best reason is a good concert of favorite band. I lose an opportunity of going to Czech Republic where one of the best modern punk rock bands from Bristol had a concert but I will fix it soon.

I heard about couchsurfing and my girlfriend and I have hosted couple guests from different countries during last summer. Unfortunately I don't have an opportunity to be a host now because I moved to the new place two months ago and I don't have much space here.

I've never bough an insurance for my trips because I'm a tough guy.

Yes I tried a little bit. But it was long time ago, when I was more closed person, so I didn't find a lot of friends. But for a long while I travel with my girlfriend and enjoy it. I think that I don't miss anything because it's so much better. Also travelling with someone don't limit you in looking for adventures and new meetings.

Have you heard of Couchsurfing or had any experiences with people from its community?

I heard a lot. I even registered there. But because I'm a lot of planning person, I prefer stability and reliability before adventures.

Do you buy insurance for all your trips?

I don't know a person that don't insures before traveling. It's such a basic thing. Also laws often make you to make insurance before entering country.

I have never tried to travel alone but once I would like to try. it is always more expensive to travel with people in addition. I have never heard of these people only now, and I would like to hear them. I never buy insurance when I go on a trip, I only have normal insurance but I think I will have to change my habits and insure myself every time I travel.

Nope, but I'm planning to travel to the Asia alone. I didn't travel, because I have a lot of good friends and in holdays I don't have time to spend time alone. In the other hand, my friends hate winter sports & mountains, so maybe I will try alone adventure in this season?

No, I didn't, but I'm not surprised that something like that exists.

Do you buy insurance for all your trips?
No, I never buy insurance, but in my opinion I should start doing it.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
