Week 10 [25.05 - 31.05] Why thorium rocks? - Safe alternative for uranium

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjM9E6d42-M

Nuclear reactors have always been a topic of dispute. In a relatively simple process, they are able to generate energy that powers entire cities without producing a single gram of pollution. This way of producing energy also had its downfall, such as the Chernobyl reactor accident, but after these events humanity did its homework and improved the construction and guidelines for reactor construction. The main problem with uranium reactors is their fuel. This material is difficult to access, difficult to extract, it must be properly processed before use, it is relatively easy to use for evil purposes like nuclear weapons and many others. However, scientists have found that the close friend of uranium – thorium, is a remedy for all the problems we face with nuclear power plants. In the attached video you will learn more about this amazing material in a funny way.

Questions:
1.     What do you think about nuclear power plants? Do you believe that they are safe? Should we build more of it?

2.     Do you think that uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in near future?

3.     What do you think about the way of sharing knowledge shown in video?

1. Unfortunately, but to say that nuclear reactors don’t generate any waste isn’t true. It doesn’t produce carbon dioxide but something much more dangerous is generated - radioactive waste, which must be stored in special containers and in areas adapted to it, the time of their decomposition is terrifyingly long. In addition, unfortunately, but after several years each of the nuclear power plants must be shut down, and in its place can’t be built a new one, so the area is lost. Countries such as France are already moving away from nuclear power plants, gradually shutting down further reactors in favor of renewable energy (wind or solar energy). Nuclear power plants are safe but all precautions must be followed. I think that it’s necessary to follow more developed countries and use other energy sources, nuclear power plants are already obsolete.

2. If uranium is a better fuel than thorium, why not? Despite this, I think that instead of looking for alternative sources of nuclear fuel, we should focus on developing photovoltaics and suitable accumulators.

3. This is an interesting, uncommon method, you never know what new drawing will appear so the video isn’t boring.
1. Well, I agree with you, it was a shorthand for the amount of pollution that are being generated by various types of power plants. However it is questionable if OZE power plants (wind, solar energy) are ready to produce enough energy to power our quickly developing World.

2. Perhaps it is the biggest problem of our energy system but this branch of our technology is developed in parallel with power plants development so it shows great promise to all of us.

3. That's great you enjoyed video :)

1.
I think that they are better then other forms of power plants. The only problem is where to dispose the radioactive substances that are a sideproduct of atomic power plants. Sure, there was Charnobyl and Hiroshima, but I think that similar to planes, a lot of thought is put into the safety of those sytems, and I think that those two accidetns help make the plants more safe overall.

2.
Sure, why not. Probably a change in the power plant equipment would be needed, and not every power plant would want to do it straight away, but it's a matter of time.

3.
`I didn't like it that much, the video was overusing the comparisions to people, that only made the video longer and didn't prove anything.
1. I agree with you, disposal of this substances are the main problem of any type of this particular type of power plants. Thorium shows great promise because of amount of waste it generates and a few other properties. It's actually great comparison to planes, those accidents helped us to better understand what we deal with.

3. Okey, I quite like that elements but you made your point and I can agree that for many people it would be not as funny as it seemed to be

1. What do you think about nuclear power plants? Do you believe that they are safe? Should we build more of it?

In my opinion, a nuclear power plant is necessary in Poland. The Polish energy infrastructure was mostly built in the 1970s. Now, this infrastructure will soon be scrappable for a large part. Renewable energy sources are not stable enough to meet domestic energy demand. Additionally, the nuclear power plant still provides access to modern technologies and solutions. It allows to develop and get used to the civil atom. It requires the training of personnel and strict compliance with procedures. The same reasons alone should be sufficient to have a minimum of 2 such power plants in the country.

2. Do you think that uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in near future?

A nuclear power plant is already under construction in India, which will use the isotope of the track to work. Due to the long half-life of the isotope, the radioactivity of products using purified thorium is low. Like uranium and plutonium, it can be used as fuel in nuclear reactors. Unlike the uranium-based nuclear cycle, thorium in some types of reactors can be used entirely, eliminating the waste problem.

3. What do you think about the way of sharing knowledge shown in video?

I think that as much information as was presented could be summarized in ten sentences. The 10 sentences can be read in a minute. The tendency to make such videos is not necessary. It is only used to make impressions.

1. What do you think about nuclear power plants? Do you believe that they are safe? Should we build more of it?
Yes, nowadays I believe we can make them safe enough to use properly. We need energy and the power plants we have in Poland really can not produce enough of it. So we really should start building them before someone cut us off the grid.

2. Do you think that uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in near future?
Maybe, or maybe by some other element in not so distant future, who knows, but thorium really should be taken into account.

3. What do you think about the way of sharing knowledge shown in video?
It was brilliant, short, on the topic and jokes were flying like bullets in the shootout.
I have no opinion on nuclear power plants. I don't know anything about it, but apparently it's OK. Anyway, I don't know much about them and it's difficult for me to comment. Such information has a small group of scientists who may have been "bought". If uranium is a better fuel than thorium, why not? Despite this, I think that instead of looking for alternative sources of nuclear fuel, we should focus on developing photovoltaics and suitable accumulators. `I didn't like it that much, the video was overusing the comparisions to people, that only made the video longer and didn't prove anything.
1. The only one question is what path we will chose either we will start building our reactors using classic checked solutions with uranium or we gonna try to pioneer the segment by the new state-of-art solution based on thorium.

2. That's great fact. Perhaps you can tell us more about it in your article in the future :)

3. Well to me it attracts people not connected in any matter with science or particular field of science to gain a lot of interesting information in simple way
1. I totally agree with you - It's time to invest in redefinition of our energy system.

2. Of course, thorium shows great promise but who knows if we won't even find better solution in the near future

3. That's exactly what I also think about it :)
That's fair but I don't believe that we will be ready to use only the power generated by "nature" - sun, water, wind etc. to fullfil our needs but i see your point. Who knows how we will be powering our homes and cities in the future?

1. What do you think about nuclear power plants? Do you believe that they are safe? Should we build more of it?
They are safe if the workers are safe. And follow all guidelines and safety rules.

2. Do you think that uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in near future?
Quite possibly, why not? If this is more reliable source of energy, then yes.

3. What do you think about the way of sharing knowledge shown in video?
Entertaining and fun, I like it.
It's really inspiring that you're focusing mainly on workes, chapaux bas :)
That's great you like this video

1. What do you think about nuclear power plants? Do you believe that they are safe? Should we build more of it?

After my experience with the Chernobyl power plant and after watching the series on this subject, it's difficult to make something up. You have to stick to the facts. These types of buildings aren't safe. So you have to take care of them very much.

2. Do you think that uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in near future?

I don't know, I don't do nuclear physics. If I were such a scientist, I would probably be able to answer this question.

3. What do you think about the way of sharing knowledge shown in video?

An intriguing way like any other. Maybe this is the way to transfer knowledge.
1. If we would have more of those maybe we would be a little further from the global warming problem. People are short-sited. They tend to panic, exaggerate and also they fear what they don't understand. It is sad.

2. That I don't know, however, according to the video that is a reasonable step. Hopefully, that will happen eventually.

3. I was a little surprised at the beginning but I liked the humour. The graphics could have been a bit more aesthetical, however, the style was tailored to the humour, so I won't judge it any further.
I think that nuclear power plants are maybe dangerous, but they are ok if managed well. Alternatives are coal or other non-renewable energy sources which won’t last for ever and we can’t produce enough energy just from renewable energy sources. So even if dangerous I think we need nuclear power plants. I don’t know if uranium reactors will be replaced by thorium reactors in the future but if it is possible and safer, I definitely hope so. I think that drawing/animation is a great way to share information, because it more original and less boring than normal, conventional way.

1. I think that nuclear power is one of the best sources of electricity we have at the moment. I believe it is safe, and we should build more of nuclear power plants.

2. I don't know. But given the information from the video, uranium might be replaced by thorium.

3. It's really unique, and i like it.
1 / I think nuclear power is one of sources of electricity we have but I'm not sure if this is a safe way.

2 / Maybe information in the video, uranium might be replaced by thorium.

3 / Why not? This is an interesting option ...

1. I think that there are others way to produce power and definitely more safe than nuclear plants. I don’t think that we should aim to built nuclear planters as they are unpredictable, and an accident can cause huge destructions as it did in Chernobyl.
2. Honestly, I don’t know a few years ago we probably wouldn’t even thought about it and who knows what future will bring.
3. I didn’t like it, as it comes to science, I prefer more traditional way to show things. But also I think that this kind of cartoon could be grate for someone who doesn’t like to learn much.
1. I think that nuclear power plants are very safe and future-proof and I think they are very important, therefore they should be built more in the world.

2. I have no idea if this will happen. How will it really be - time will tell. We have to wait.

3. A little unusual solution with the use of cartoon and humor. Interesting, but from time to time.
Hello, here are my replies to your questions!

1. I honestly think that nuclear power plants are our future and we should build more of them. I think Polish people are still afraid after the Chernobyl incident and that's why we don't have any nuclear power plants in our contry yet. But I believe that they are a very safe and eco-friendly way of getting energy and I hope more people will see that. The world needs them.

2. Honestly, it's hard to tell. Depends on "what will sell better" as that's how the world works nowadays. I think that Uranium might be replaced by Thorium only if it turns out to be the most profitable option.

3. I love videos like that - with tons of humor and made with animation which is very time-consuming to produce. I never heard about that channel before but I subscribed to them after viewing your video so thanks!
1. I think they are safe and we should invest money in it, they are definitely better than coal in the alternative renewable energy sources are interesting
2. I think it isnt easy to predict, the technology is developing very quickly so maybe in few years we will discover something even more efficient
3. I'm not fan, lack of fluidity and characters drawn like paint can reject a lot of people who think that this is not serious movie

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
