Week 10 [25.05 - 31.05] SmartCity - step into the future

Smart City
These days more than half of people around the world are living in the cities. Plenty of them are not well prepared to provide a good quality of living. Below I presented an interesting video about SmartCity concept. I would like to add that if you are interested in the topic, you can check  the real examples of cities like Masdar or Songdo. These two were built from nothing, both projects are not finished yet, but there is already some applications which we can copy and try to implement in our city. Please answer these 3 questions after watching the video.

1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?
2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
Thank you for your attention.

1. Yes, I've heard of smart cities. In my opinion, such cities would make life much easier. Unfortunately, these days most cities are congested and more polluted than provinces, so changes are needed to make life in the city more enjoyable. I think that a lot of time will pass before smart cities appear in Poland, but many amenities will be slowly introduced.
2. New York, London and maybe one of the Asian cities, e.g. Tokyo. Unfortunately, I do not remember specific solutions but I know that at least there are autonomous means of transport in London. In addition, many things are powered by solar batteries, e.g. trash cans monitoring the level of garbage or lamps. Although such lamps also occur in my village, so I think that my village is also quite smart.
3. For now, I do not notice the negative features of city life apart from polluted air, because I do not drive a car. It seems to me that the amenities associated with traffic would most affect the comfort of living in the city. Unfortunately, many of them seem unnecessary to me, e.g. watering lawns - this is a waste of water.
So I think I would like to live in a partially smart city.

1.
I have heard about it and I find this topic quite fasinating. I'm hoping to live a time
where smart cities are common and we reap all of the benefits of living in one.

2.
Oulu, Oslo, Toronto. Oulu is a small nordic city, but was the first one that had 5G rolled in for tests. Oslo invest a lot of money into smart city technology and in the company I work in, there is some department that is responsible for that. Toronto was chosen by Google to by their playground when it comes to smart cities, so a lot of inovation is going on there.

3.
I would love to live in a smart city, it would make living there effortless, all of it would be
thought out and calibrated by algorithms, which means that highest efficiency could be reached.
1) Yes, I have heard about it. I remember that there was a candidate for president in Toruń who wanted to introduce some concepts of a smart city there. I think technology is getting more advanced and at the same time cheap and it is possible to introduce it to our life. Maybe it is not the first need, but it can be helpful for people. I especially like the idea of parking slot monitoring, because it helps both driver who is looking for a place and drivers who are commuting - people who look for a parking slot are driving slowlier and they travel without a point, so they can also be a reason for traffic jams.

2) I am sorry, but I'm not in this topic and I don't know any smart city.

3) It would be cool if we lived in such a place. I am just concerned about privacy which I would not like to sacrifice for that. Parking monitoring can be anonymous (although I think eventually automatic payments will also take place), but live monitoring of the town is not a way to go. You can look at Hongkong where people are protesting against China who wants to invigilate people using cameras. I know that the goals are good, but there will always be some bad people who want to use it in another way. For example, now we all have registered phone numbers connected to our PESEL. Take a look at the possible consequences: https://www.telepolis.pl/wiadomosci/prawo-finanse-statystyki/dane-lokalizacyjne-na-zadanie-premiera-tarcza-antykryzysowa-2-0 I have to remind that the idea of registering was to fight with terrorism. AFAIK, no terrorist has been discovered yet.

1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?

I heard that. Google Corporation is going to turn Toronto into a smart city. I wouldn't want to throw in a city like this. I'd be afraid for my privacy. If I lived in a city like this, I'd be followed at every turn. My smartphone already knows where I am and what I'm doing, but now I would be tracked by any other device. Additionally, in my opinion such cities should be self-sufficient. In order for such a city to be a Smar, it should produce solar power to power the infrastructure, create a balance between the number of inhabitants and the number of jobs, provide a steady income to the budget, own transport, support the system to be notified, repaired or informed on machines. In my opinion, this is not a realistic concept.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.

There is no such city nowadays. Maybe Asian cities are developing in this direction, but it is because of the increasing possibilities of surveillance of their citizens.
3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?

I don't want to live in a town like this.
Several times in my life I heard about the subject of SmartCity and I think it is a fairly good idea that everything would be perfectly matched to the rest, although such a solution allows access to the entire city in a hacker attack. In my opinion it is difficult to choose the 3 smartest cities, but it seems to be Tokyo, Berlin and Los Angeles, but on average I can explain it. I prefer to stay where I live because I like my 4 angles. However, such a place sounds like a good idea for an apartment.

I have, and I think that here is a problem with being on the verge of what is allowed. Turning a whole city into a monitored network -- definitely not a good idea. What will keep those who are at the helm from controlling everyone directly then? Also, one power or Internet outage and the whole city is done for.
2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Tokyo are the most advanced in tech, from what I've heard.
3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
Frankly, I would prefer an orbital station. Or extraterrestrial colony.

1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?
I haven`t heard exactly about this term, however the general concept was of course well-known to me. I think that makes people live in comfort, in an ideal place with all necessary means.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
In my opinion these are: Tokyo, Singapore and Vienna.
These cities care about ecological factor, defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
Sure, I would like. I actually plan to move to Vienna, it is my dream:)

1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?
Yes, I have heard about this topic a few times, but I have never delved into it. I think it is a great idea that people should keep in mind while creating new cities or upgrading existing ones to organize a comfortable place for living.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
I have visited just 5 countries jet, so I can judge just by what I`ve read or watched. And the first city that comes to my mind was Rotterdam in the Netherlands. After World War the second, the city was destroyed and then was competently rebuilt and now it looks more 'livable'. Additionally, I remembered Dubai, also a young city, with its street air conditioning.

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
I think yes, I would like to live in a place like this. If SmartCity is the place where are a lot of facilities for inhabitants, so why not?

1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?

Yeah, I have heard about it. Well... all parts of our lives now are somehow digitilized or are going to that so I don't see any problems. If we want to use AI for curing diseases why not give it a chance to manage traffic. Maybe we will be more productive and produce less garbage in a such city.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.

Hangzhou, Singapore, and Chicago. The reason is I have heard and read about their projects and remember them. That simple, yes, but they are really good. I hope to get there and observe that all.

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?

Yes, cause why not? I'm not much in fighting for privacy so I have no reason not to live there especially if there will be fewer traffic jams and crimes.

I heard. Cool thing. Smart city will be emerging more often in various places around the world. This is the future, especially IP v 6, and 5 or 6 G.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.

No, I can not. I never thought about that. Which city can be the most modern and the coolest or the smartest. It definitely changes dynamically. So it will be difficult to answer this question.

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?

I don't know, I never thought about that. I live here where I live. Do I want to move to a smart city? I can't answer this question. Maybe if such a city arises in Poland?

Yes, I have heard about it before, I think they are carrying out sustainable development in order to develop in environmental protection and improve the comfort of citizens.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
Tokyo, Hongkong and Canton. For example, Japan has the most advanced underground drainage system in the world. Just in Tokyo, this drainage system is extremely large and consists of a series of concrete pits. I search about it now, each concrete pit has a height of 65 meters and a width of 32 meters. It is formed by connecting 6.3 kilometers of tunnels at a depth of 50 meters underground.

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
Yes, of course I want, my city is kinda like this, though I hope privacy could be guaranteed in the meanwhile.

1. I've heard about SmartCity and I'm against such solutions. I don't like that computers control our whole life. This leads to full surveillance and hence to lack of privacy.

2. I don't know such cities.

3. No, I would not like to live in such a place. It is conditioned by full surveillance of our private life.
1. I'm not sure if I heard about this particular concept but I have heard about similar ideas. Human-centered design is popular nowadays as it has plenty of benefits. Those cities seem to be very comfortable, however, the video didn't show an actual urban design rather few tips, it would all have to be properly designed to work. For example to separate business areas from living areas and so on.

2. It is difficult to pick as much as 3 cities. To know a city you need to live in it for at least a little while. One of the cities I lived in was Dusseldorf and it had the best organisation design ever. This city has few universities and they decided to have all of them in one area. So at the last U-Bahn station, they build something like a university city with canteens, dorms and obviously lecture halls. It was very convenient. The other well-designed city is Zamość, I can't say that I visited it myself but I studied it. It was build from the ground up according to the design and not consequently growing like most cities. It made the city logical and also beautiful. If I had to pick the third one I'd say Vancouver but I wouldn't give it a full 5-star recommendation. It had a nice, ring-like structure with the city centre in the middle that had all the businesses and housing areas were further away. This makes a city safer, more comfortable. In the relatively same place you can grocery-shop, work, but this TV you always wanted, take care of papers and so on. It saves time and also requires less travelling so besides the centre the air was very clean.

3. There are some moral issues to be considered here... For example, is the collected information well secured? However, assuming that it would be all as pretty as in the picture I would pack my bags right now! I love technology especially the smart devices. I would feel comfortable there.
1 / Yes, I think I heard about this before. This is a rather big step in the progress of mankind and a great idea in promotion.

2 / In my opinion, these are the cities that cannot live without technology at all. Therefore, let it be New York, Tokyo and Singapore.
Imagine: you come to a bus stop and using a mobile application you will find out which bus will arrive next and how many empty seats there will be. Smart systems record how much water you consume and notice if you have thrown a cigarette butt on the sidewalk. The doctor prescribes treatment after a video conference, and you know how many cars are in front of yours in traffic.
The Japanese capital took sixth place in the ranking of “smart” cities from EasyPack. Tokyo is the greenest city in the Asia-Pacific region. Two years later, the Summer Olympics will be held in the Japanese capital. Tokyo will launch a high-speed Internet system, and the QZSS system, some of whose satellites are already running, will collect GPS data on the location of objects with an accuracy of 1-3 cm.

3 / Yes, I love megacities and this is one of the parts of a big city.

1. I have never heard about SmartCity, and as for now I don’t think that cities like this will be common thing in near future. Overall, I really like the idea of city which works in a way presented on the video.
2. I don’t think I can, I have never visited one that could be named as a SmartCity, so it is hard to guess which one could be the smartest city yet.
3. Well I think that could be convenient if we didn’t have to worry about parking spots for example, but also kinda weird knowing that somebody is watching our every move and knows exactly where we are all the time.
A very similar presentation with the same video on yt I uploaded a year ago here :)
So answering your questions:

1. Of course I heard about smart city. I think that this is really a great move forward. Smart city will make us feel more secure (skipping surveillance, this is a topic for a separate article) and we will feel modern.

2. I will mention only 1, the most modern city in the world - Songdo in South Korea, near Seoul. It is a city of the future, built from scratch. Certainly, the pneumatic garbage chutes in blocks are an unusual solution, which causes the underground to go directly to the garbage sorting plant. This way there are no garbage trucks taking garbage from the apartments.

3. Of course I would! I really like modern solutions and innovative technologies, so I certainly felt great in such a forward-looking and intelligent city such as Songdo. Maybe someday it will succeed? :)
Hello, here are my replies to your questions!

1. I think I might have heard about the SmartCity before, but I'm not exactly sure from where...? I think someone told me about that idea in a casual conversation and I liked is a lot, however, I didn't find it to be possible to achieve. And I still find it hard to believe that it will be ever achieved on a grand scale, especially nowadays when people want less and less control from the government.

2. Honestly, I've never been in an "almost-SmartCity" before so it's hard to tell. I'd probably be guessing that Asian cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore may be the closest ones to that description because of their high-tech profile.

3. If it would be possible then I'd like to live in a place like that. I'd like to feel like I'm in a Sci-Fi movie. ;)
1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?
Yes, I did. In my opinion it is quite discussable. Of course, many of those ideas are very nice and would make living in a city far more pleasent and easy but on the other hand smart cities, with wifi, everything connected can turn into systems that easily gather information about people. From one point of view it is all nice and good, on the other hand when, let's say, smart, safe city has a camera to help police catch criminals, part of your privacy is lost.
2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.
To be honest I can't. I hear that in Scandinavia there are many "smart cities", friendly to inhabitants but I've never been there. There are some "smart" solutions in Warsaw f.e. buttons next to pedestrian crossings but those doesn't work well.
3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?
I would have to know to what degree this city is "smart". If I was to fell observed by the cameras I probably woulnd't like to. On the other hand many solutions presented in the video seem very nice and helpful. I guess you always need to find the Golden mean.
1. Have you ever heard about SmartCity? What is your opinion about it?

Yes I have heard a lot because one of my businesses is deeply connected with that part of new age economy. I quite like the concept and the goal of developing this idea.

2. Can you name 3 cities which are the smartest in your opinion? Please, explain why.

Despite cities built by definition to be smart cities there are many Europeans cities that are deeply engaged into digitial transformation and became smart quickly. Even Warsaw is making baby steps

3. Do you want to live in place like this? Why? Why not?

For someone as me - who really likes the technology all around I would like to live in such place. Everything is easier with modern technology
Thank you for your comment. You are right London and New York are one of the greatest examples of Smart City.
Thank you for your comment. I like your answer to the third question, but we have to think that in cities like this we are observed and our privacy is limited
Thank you for your comment. I have not heard about president of Toruń. It is great. Some Polish cities has introduced elements of Smart City.
Thank you for your comment. I am glad you are realizing the fact of limited privacy. It is one of threats of living in city like this.
Thank you for your comment. It is really difficult to choose only 3, but there are some cities in the world which are the most iconic to this idea.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
