Week 11 [14-20.01.19] Virtual Reality – new era of entertainment?

Virtual Reality – new era of entertainment?

I am nearly 100% sure that you’ve heard about virtual reality – maybe you’ve experienced it by yourself, or you saw it somewhere. I would like to introduce you into VR history and popular goggles

First of all – what is Virtual Reality? By Wikipedia definition:

Virtual reality (VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment. It incorporates mainly auditory and visual feedback, but may also allow other types of sensory feedback like haptic.

From my point of view VR is the new way of entertainment. You can watch movies and feel like you are the main actor, you can travel to almost everywhere or you can just play video games feeling like the game is your life.

The first VR goggles were patented in 1960 by Morton Heilig – they were very similar to the newest ones! You could watch picture on them like normal television, and they even had stereo sound. Obviously they didn’t have any motion tracking.

In 1968 Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull introduced Sword of Damocles – the first VR head mounted display that was connected to the computer, not to camera like the other ones. Although the graphics was very primitive – it was a huge step forward.

In 1993 SEGA announced their VR glasses – they were meant for Sega Genesis console. At that time they were quite “high end” – head tracking, stereo sound and LCD screens sounded like something crazy in 1993. Also, the price was not that high – about 200$ at that time, or about 322$ in current money. However, the technical development issues made them stay a prototype.

Modern times
Today technology is way better, and we have 3 most popular VR goggles. The first of them are called Oculus Rift. The idea was born in Palmers Luckey head in 2012, as he wanted to make funds on Kickstarter. The campaign lasted 3 months, and they raised about 2.5 million dollars. Whoa.

The next popular goggles are called HTC Vive – they were developed by HTC and Valve Corporation in 2016. The main difference between the first model of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive was that Vive had controllers included.

And last, but not least – PS VR introduced in 2016. They’re one of the cheapest VR goggles that you can get for video games, but you need PS4 system to run them.

  • Have you had  any experience with VR goggles?
  • What do you think about that technology?
  • Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?

My first experience with VR, I remember it till today - I went to my siblings for a student party and there was a guy who was very interested in computers and had such an oculus rift (it was maybe around 8/9 years ago). Even then I knew what it would be like and it was very little known. Playing games or watching these short videos is a completely new experience.
In my opinion, VR will go so far and it will be so popular that all our free time will be mostly spent on VR and our second life will be on the internet.
It seems to me that one day VR will be so popular - that everyone will have such a set like today people have TVs at home.
I do have ample experience with VR, as a matter of fact I developed a VR game as a part of my thesis. The technology is very promising, though at current stage of its development it is still largely limited in its applications. While the illusion of being in three-dimensional space certainly works well, the constraints of space and movement pose significant challenges that are very hard to overcome without breaking the immersion. I strongly believe that VR technology has merit and as it’s developed further it has a good chance of becoming the new standard of entertainment. The possibilities are endless. Fully three-dimensional movies where the audience finds themselves right in the middle of action. Possibility to visit distant parts of the world from the comfort of your own house – perhaps not the same thing as taking a trip there, but a very good and still educational alternative when you have no money for an airplane ticket. Computer games that engage you in ways never seen before – and keep you fit at the same time. The future of this technology is bright, and I hope to see it bloom in my lifetime.

1.Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
Yes, I tried to play them a beta version of the game Resident Evil 7 at the exhibition. It was still 2016, since then many improved analogs have appeared.

2.What do you think about that technology? in 2010, many could not imagine what it would be, it's really a big breakthrough, now even learn to fly a simulator with VR glasses.

3.Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
A lot of people like to play different games, simulators, mmorpg and many simply will live in virtual reality, such as in Ready Player One.

Yes, and I really enjoyed this experience. I ride with the help of points on a roller coaster. The graphics were not the coolest, but this did not prevent me from really thinking that I was falling. Great entertainment, I like these glasses. I am sure that in the future everything can change, something may appear that will replace virtual reality glasses, but now it’s interesting. I received a gift for the new year: a visiting to the virtual reality room, where you can choose a game, watch videos with sea animals, even have a game for children.
I've played once a VR game and as much as it was fun, it was also very tiring for my eyes. I couldn't really play for more than 30 minutes. Maybe now VR goggles are of better quality, but they are very costly. You have to pay for goggles and for a good computer to be able to play any VR game. So overall this is not really entertainment for everyone. Maybe in a few years it will change. Components are getting cheaper all the time.
But there is at least one problem with VR which will not be easily fixed with current technology, even if it gets cheaper. The way our eyes work. When we want to see something far away from us, our eyes try to focus on it. But the screen in VR is always at the same distance, so it must refocus back on it. This way our eyes are strained when we are using VR for too long.
What I really wait for is to connect our nervous system directly to a computer. This would be a total game changer - and VR will be like in "Matrix". That's the future, not some clunky goggles.
I don’t have much experience with using VR because I don’t fully believe in its utility. It’s relatively young and very limited. It still requires too much processing power in order to deliver a crystal clear image to trick our eyes that I would approve of.

I think Augmented Reality has more potential in entertainment and utility. But not in the form we know it today, that is through a smartphone or tablet. When some company eventually comes up with actually usable AR glasses, it would be a game-changer (no pun intended).

Yes, I've had the experience of using VR glasses and it was a very strange experience for me. I remind that the first time I used it, I felt confused for hours.
Looking Ahead the future of VR for business use looks very promising. There are already businesses out there making their first move into VR technology (i.e., Facebook & Oculus VR), but it’s still a long way for it to be fully embraced by the masses. But as VR technology evolves, it’ll not be long for organizations to do their businesses in the virtual world.
Yes, in my opinion, Google VR Glasses can be one of the upcoming hobbies.

Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
Yes, I do have some cheap glasses (or even lenses) at home, in which you can put your phone and play some apps or watch videos in virtual reality. I found this kind of entertainment fun at the beginning, but I have changed my mind when I started to get headaches after longer use.

What do you think about that technology?
I think it is very futuristic and innovative technology. Combining technology with our perception, simultaneously projecting our reality comes with a lot of possibilities to me. Not only we can have fun visiting other countries from our home or playing tenis with our friends not being next to each other at the moment, but we also can enhance our skills by making a lot errors in virtual reality, so we do not make them in reality. We can also get creative and invent some new things effortlessly, as we are not spending real money and resources on prototypes and testing real products.

Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
In my opinion VR we currently is just a beginning and it will be developed for a long time. Maybe one day, except the vision, we will be able to smell and feel and taste virtual world around us, so it would be hard to distinguish between what is real and what is not. This is what I imagine as a future of VR entertainment.
I never actually tried VR -- I suffer from motion sickness very hard. I cannot even watch movies in 3D, and, basically, people like me are the only reason cinemas still show regular movies, and the reason VR will not replace standard interfaces. Unless the solution to the motion sickness is found.

Yes, I had some experience. When I buy some new device in shop they gave me a certificate for two rides on VR amusement park, which was in this shop. Earlier I saw videos on YouTube about this type of entertainment and I couldn’t believe that emotions that peoples perform are real. But everything has changed when I tried it on my own. It was attraction with VR googles and podium which move. First game was roller coaster and It was so real that I even couldn’t understand that I in the shop, not on the roller coaster. Only when I realized it I start to control my body normally.
In my opinion it’s a great technology. It can make you feel in a different place and it’s cool. One more usage of this technology is 3D modelling, I think artists can better see what they do in VR either than on computer screen.
Yes, it’s for sure future of entertainment.

My experience with VR contains mainly phone in. Google project cardboard. It is an interesting experience. To witness it for the first time its mid blowing.
VR as technology have a lot to improve in upcoming years. Right now its kind of a gimmick. Of course it will improve and than it might become a part of our dayly life.
VR googles of the future might not only be source of your entertainment. That might be also a replacement for standard screens at work.
I tried VR at disco VR, place where you can use googles for some price.
I like that technology, but it is quite exhausting to use it more than 2 hours.
Also I think that you need some time to set up gear, and need, a lot of space.
That is why i don't think virtual reality will be future. It's too expensive, and it takes time to set up for playing. On console you can just start game and play it.
Yes, it was last summer. My friend has VR from PS and it was very cool, for me it was some new experience of gaming. To my mind this technology has a big future, also maybe with time we could see costumes which will transmit touches and things like that. And for more immersive into VR already created installation in which a person can run, jump while remaining in one place. VR goggles are the future not only of entertainment, for example, when you are looking for a house and don't have enough time to visit it, you can visit the house using the VR and I think that they will have many other opportunities.
Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
Yes. I had the second version of oculus for a month. I have played some racing game and VR demos but they were giving me a headache.

What do you think about that technology?
It is great entertainment but it suffers because a lot of people feel dizzy after 15min of using it. But I've also heard that with newer iterations it had gotten better

Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
I think they are a part of it

I had VR googles on my head once. My friend asked me if I want to try it so I did. The feeling is amazing, a rollercoaster ride was maybe not as a real one, but made me scared enough.
I think this technology is a future. Playing games with VR googles „puts” us inside it. The feeling of being a part of the game rather than just staring at the screen in front of the player takes the industry to the whole new level.
In my opinion VR googles are the future of entertainment and as long as I don’t imagine a family meeting in googles, I can imagine how playing games will look like in a few years.

Unfirtunatelly, I haven`t tried to use VR googles yet. All my friends who have bought it now using it almost everyday, so I guess it is fun to use it. Virtual Reality technology is new, so I think it will be better and better everyday and probably one day it will as popular as smartphones and will replace all currently known PC games.

Yes, I’ve played some VR games and also I tested one VR game which my friends was developing. I like the whole idea of virtual reality and I like to play VR games, but it’s not that easy to make a good game without ruin the immersion.
This technology is interesting and promising, however it’s still requiring more work on it.
I think VR goggles are the part of the future of entertainment, but along with the headset, there will be another parts for hands and legs to simplify player movements in the game.

In my opinion VR goggles are not the future, but only the next step in the development of AR technology. I have my own VR goggles and it is only for fun, but the practical application will be after the introduction and improvement of AR technology. The difference is that VR goggles are mainly for recreation while AR goggles are used in practically everyday use eg. AR googles could help us in daily navigation in the city or looking for products in the shopping center. There is an infinite number of uses.

Yes I experienced VR googles and its very awesome. First time it was in PGA where it was stations with VR sets and I was playing horror game. Just OMG It was too realistic to me but in good way. Also I have this set from our university to create game on it. It was very funny if me and my friend creating scripts for this set.

This technology have a lot of potential in the future. I hope that this technology will be cheaper in the future.

Of course yes but it must be cheaper.

Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
No, however I'm looking forward to this technology. And I will buy a set when it will be much better

What do you think about that technology?
Very promising, we are getting closer and closer to the matrix

Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
Yes, and we didn't stopped yet. There are more things like:
Full FOV
Retina resolution
No SDE
Super lightweight, like simple glasses or even contact lenses
Full body tracking
Full body haptic feedback and resistance gloves for picking up objects
Wireless

Yes, I had. The first VR in my life brought Google with their VR cardboard kit :) It was amazing. I enjoyed playing horror games. I also tried the PS VR system with their controller, such as a weapon and a game, where you walk around the planet and kill aliens, but I don’t remember what the name of the game is. VR games are a very fun experience. I think that virtual reality will still reveal its potential, at the moment everything is very expensive and not perfect. I think that virtual reality is one of the steps towards real immersion in the virtual world.
Yes I do and i loved it ! It is very real experience I was a bit uncertain of this technology untill i tried it myself at VR Warsaw place, the amazing feeling of shooting a bow is sick! My uncle recently bought a VR and we have tried many more games on it and each of them was awesome, especially zombies :)
Yes, i think it may be a future of entertainment, it still needs some improvements but with todays technology I think in near future everyone would have theirs own gear.

I think that virtual reality is already the entertainment of modern days. We live in a such times, when everything moves and changes with an incredible speed, and of course it includes technologies. Even though VR goggles, as we know them today, appeared relatively not so longtime ago, they’ve already taken their place in market of entertainment and maybe even dominate it. But I think there are much more to achieve. Right now, we are able to enter virtual reality only visually, with our eyes watching through VR goggles. There are also special gloves, which will allow you to experience sense of touch, but they are currently in development process and not available on a market. But image what it would feel like to be able experience all 5 senses in virtual reality. That would be total immersion in virtual reality. But right now, we have only VR goggles. I was lucky and had a chance to try to wear them. I must admit, that even thought it is not a full immersion, it was really incredible and fun. I am looking forward to being able to buy them.

No, I have never had any experience with VR goggles but of course, I have watched a lot of tests and movies about technology... that's all. It is something new and I don't want to waste my money because I know myself and after several tests I would throw it away. I like gadgets but seriously, it's unnecessary.
What do you think about that technology? As I said, VR is too expensive gadget for daily use. I think it can be good for place where are a lot people.
Hmm, I don't think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment. I have heard about it but I don't think so. They are to massive!

1. Unfortunately never, but I would like to try it someday.

2. It's hard to tell since I haven't experienced it personally, but I've heard different opinions on that topic. Most of them are positive, but some people claim that it is very limited and it is still far from the full immersion that some hope to achieve when playing video games.

3. At the moment VR seems to be very limited so I don’t think it will be the future of entertainment. Although I may change my mind once I will have an opportunity to use them.

1. I was in a VR club where they have Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
2. That's kind of entertainment is awesome! It's quite expensive to buy it on our own but you can go to VR clubs and try it there. After 2 hours I had a little headache but it's shows that you shouldn't play too long.
3. I think that it is a future of entertainment. I don't think that it will replace computer games or TVs but it is another interesting way of spending your free time and I think that this kind of entertainment will stay with us.

Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
Yes, I've tried some goggles for an smartphone and I didn't like it at all. The experience wasn't even pleasant or interesting. Moreover it was boring and troublesome.
What do you think about that technology?
I have to try some videogames at least to make up my mind about the whole technology. All I can say right now that I am sceptical because of my previous experience with smartphone goggles.
Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
In my opinion they aren't. They are popular right now and they are still being advertised but only a small percentage of players use them. This is not beacause of the cost but the feelings and habits.
Unfortunately, I have never tried VR goggles. But I think, in near future I will most definitely try VR.
No doubts, this technology is great and has a bright future. Goggles will become cheaper and will get a high screen resolution. VR goggles will be used not only in sphere of entertainment but in Medicine, Architecture and other industries.
Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
I think, VR is not for everyone, but overall it's the future of entertainment. Even now, there are a lot of "VR stands" in malls and entertainment centers where you can experience virtual reality via games.
Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
Yes, I have experience using VR. I even tried many different models. Definitely, the models that work with the phone are just awful. Probably, using them does not only make the cosmonauts feel bad.
What do you think about that technology?
This technology is great. Definitely, it conquered many hearts. This is a big leap forward in the entertainment industry. Over time, more and more VR games and movies will come out. But unfortunately, at the moment, it is not profitable for manufacturers to create games because very few people buy VR glasses. And accordingly, such an expensive product makes no sense to buy until more VR games are released.
Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
Yes, I think VR technology is the future of the entertainment industry. I really hope for the development of this industry, maybe we will even meet the technology of total immersion before we get old.
I have quite a lot of experience with VR goggles. First time I tried this during Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice where they were presented with some kind of roller coaster animation. Then I tried it on few different events. And finally I worked as intern In company that creates software like games and buildings development on VR goggles. I think that this technology is really cool idea and in future it will have huge impact on all parts of human life. But right now it is just not good enough to be something significant. Goggles are heavy and not very comfortable, video quality leaves a lot to be desired and controls are not as accurate and intuitive as they could be. In future, maybe not that distant future VR goggles will be one of the best way to entertain people like playing games, watching movies and much much more but we still need to wait a little bit for that.

Couple of months ago I have tried VR googles for the first time. It was a great experience and I enjoyed every part of it. I also really wanted to try these out for pretty long time but didn’t have occasion to do that. I think that this technology has huge potential, however right now it’s just a funny toy rather than full-fledged entertainment system.
I work with VR on daily basis and let me tell you, VR is THE future.
out of all the problems VR is currently suffering from only one stays unsolved. We are making leaps in making this technology widely aviable and easy to use for everyone.
When it comes to "waht i mean saying THE future" i mean it, VR its gonna be the future of : marketing, advertising, design, 3D modeling, simulations, teaching, entertainment, chemistry and surgery equipment, those were couple from the top of my head.

1. Have you had any experience with VR goggles?
- Unfortunatly no, but I have to give it a try one day.
2. What do you think about that technology?
- It is cool from a gaming perspctive but in my opinion it is too expensive right now.
3. Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
- It is hard to say, I know that some people feel sick when they play.
No, I have no experience with VR goggles but I want to try because actually I want to by one kit for personal use because I think it's very cool to play in game and feel like you inside of it. This is really new experience and sometimes I want to get in to virtual world. I think that VR is not future but reality of our life now but there just not so much devices that can provide to us such experience.
Few times I had an opportunity to use VR goggles. I think it is really great fun and I enjoyed it pretty much. But also there are a lot of other ways to use VR. I think that we could use them to help disabled people in many ways. It’s just an example, but it could be used in any area, it can help developing, constructing, simulating, etc. I think that not only VR googles, but the whole VR are the future of entertainment, but also future of medicine, business or architecture.

Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?

1. Yes, I sometimes visit different VR clubs to have a fun time with friends.
2. It's awesome, but isn't complete yet. I think it will take a couple of years to make it better and cheaper.
3. Not quite. Nowadays this technology is used mainly in games or drone controlling. But in future there can be more serious use cases.

I do have experience with VR goggles, different kinds of them: Hololens, Oculus, Vive and different cardboard type ones. It's fun.

I think in the next 10-20 years it will revolutionize many industries. Now harder is a bit too expensive, so there are not that many potential buyers. However in the future when this technology will become a casual one, I think it will have a huge impact on our lives.

For sure they will play their role in the future of entertainment, but I don't think they are the future. Why? Wearing them, we still feel that we are in our room. I'd say that the future of entertainment lies in complete dive into a different world. So something that we will put to our mind and it will transfer us to an artificial world.

Unfortunately, I haven't had any experience with VR.
I am thinking of buying PlayStation VR because I want to watch some movies like Star Wars with it. I am also considering buying HTC Vive but this one is really expensive.
I don't think so that VR goggles are the future of entertainment. They are just one step forward but nothing more.

I think that VR goggles will be one of the kinds of the future of entertainment, but not the only one.

I think that this technology need more time to be more effective. Now we can only experience a poor beginning of this technology.

Do you think that VR goggles are the future of entertainment?
I think that entertainment is the best area for VR goggles, especially games.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
