Week 8 [03.12-09.12.18] Canine cancer detection - is that possible?

Research on canine cancer detection are mainly run in USA, Great Britain and Sweden. Really good results are obtained in about 30% dogs breeds with an extremely sensitive smell, sufficiently intelligible in the training and persistent enough. So, scientists discovered that best dog races for this job are labradors, shepherds, schnauzers, spaniels and few others. Effectiveness of dog cancer detection ranges between 70% even to 90%.

How dogs can do it, and how does training look like?
In trainings people are focusing on dog’s natural abilities to distinguish different scents in trace amounts. It is actually quite similar to how police dogs are trained to find drugs. During trainings animal has few different containers with samples of exhaled air or urine. After smelling every sample dog sits or lies down next to this one which “smells of cancer”. Each time for pointing correct sample animal is rewarded and that is how dogs can learn how to detect cancer.

Dog doctor
In the north of Italy in Castellanza city there is a dog named Liu, it is German Shepherd which works as a cancer diagnostician in a hospital. The local staff laughs that Liu is the best doctor on their section and is able to detect cancer in urine samples much faster than medical analysis and it is accurate in 98% of cases! Unfortunately, in Poland no medical facility decided to use four legs specialist in medical examinations regarding cancer.

Professional skepticism
Many oncologists thinks that most of these researches were not reliable and in lack of details. Also, that samples used in research were taken from people with fully diagnosed tumor often in advanced stadium. So unfortunately, there is lack of evidence that dogs can detect cancer in it’s early stage when there are no visible symptoms of the disease.

 Your own home anti-cancer detector
In theory every dog even without any professional training should be able to detect tumor at its owner. Maybe even some of our pupils tries to show us that something wrong is going on but sadly it is usually illegible for human. That is why our favorite pets need training to show us something that we can understand. But sometimes dogs can give us heads up with its unusual behavior. There was a case in 2003 when a dog sniffed a lot skin change on its owner leg. The owner got suspicious and told about it to his doctor, after examination this skin change happened to be melanoma.

Questions:
1.       Do you think that dogs can in fact detect cancer or is it just dog-fans made up story?
2.       Do you think that animals can help in any other way to develop new medical solutions?
3.       Would you like to have a dog with a cancer detector included in it’s skill set?

Since I am not a pet lover I cannot say much about dogs -- only that I would not like to have one at all. But utilizing their abilities is sertainly a good thing. Dogs already proved their effectivness and it will be a long time before a steady nose will be replaced by some scent sensor. Which also, as any type of electronic, may malfunction, unlike what has been created by Mother Nature.

I don't know if dogs that can sniff out cancer is a made up story, but it could be worth testing out as it could lifesaver. Dogs are used since centuries in different scenarios and they could definitely be helpful in a new way that hasn't been tested yet. I would like to have a dog one day, mostly German Shepard, and if he had an ability to detect cancer and save someones life, it would be a nice feature.

Yes, I think it can be. Cats also feel different pains at their master. In general, it can still be because they live with a person and can notice mood swings for example, or lack of strength.
For example, "dog-doctor" will not help in the development of medical solutions. Medicine is an exact science (despite the fact that in medicine they make mistakes), and the dog is still an animal that does not give accurate diagnoses and does not even know how to speak. And for those who believe this diagnostic method is accurate, they can get a dog at home.
Can you imagine a chip embedded into a dog that should warn me in some way if the dog smells cancer? No, I love dogs such as they are, probably a dog that will live with me will be my friend, and doctors should diagnose cancer.

The dog may be a hint for cancer detection, but I agree with my colleagues that we should leave it to the doctors. Of course, animals can actually identify variable states of well-being in their owners, but this is due to the fact that they stay with them every day. This is influenced by a different odor that we can emit at the moment, increased sweating ... Such elements are easily noticeable to animals.

I think it could be true, because cats and dogs can feel our pain. I've had a totally crazy cat, that became calm, sweet and good when I felt headache. She purred near me every time I felt pain. Same story with dogs.
I don't think that animals can help in any way to develop new medical solutions, but well, I didn't know about this one with a cancer too, so who knows.
Unfortunately, in my family a lot of females were diagnosed with a cancer. I really hope that in case of cancer my dog will show it to me and save my life. I'm not sure if they can do it at the earliest stages, but it would be great if they will.

I think that they could detect cancer in its advanced stadium, just like some people maybe looking at a person could tell that something is wrong. I don't know how about early stage of this disease, but if dogs could smell it even then, then it's kind of magical.
Some animals could have more sharpened senses in some aspects, so maybe they can help develop new medical solutions, but nothing specific comes to my mind in this moment.
I'm not a big fan of dogs, I'd rather prefer cat with such skillset ;P But of course, having this kind of dog would be a thing.

I know that animals could feel thing that human can not, perhaps even some desease, but I would not trust this method, so dogs, to my mind, should not be used in medicine.
I wouldn`t like to have any dogs, because I don`t really like to have domestic animals.
I think so. Animals sometimes have much better developed senses than humans.

In my opinion it is hard to say. I have heard about guide dogs that help people who are blind. I haven't heard that animals could help in any way in the development of new medical solutions.

No, I don't like animals, especially at home.

Thanks for your comment :)
Well I agree that you don't need to be pet lover to appreciate dogs input in human lives. And you’re probably right that a long time will pass before human can invent something better in sniffing then dogs nose.
It is totally true that dogs and cats can feel our pain and change their behavior to help us feel better. My dog always keeps my company when I feel sad or I am sick. I'm sorry to hear about cancer history in your family and I hope that you won't have any problems with this disease but in worst case scenario I keep my fingers crossed for your dog to give you heads up about it.
Yes I also think that we should leave cancer diagnose to doctors but as you rightly mentioned dogs can be good hint in that diagnose and sometimes they can even save your life!

1. Do you think that dogs can in fact detect cancer or is it just dog-fans made up story?
I think that in order to determine whether they are actually able to do it, we need some research on that topic. And if that is true, and we can determine how they do it then we can just use some tools to do so.
2. Do you think that animals can help in any other way to develop new medical solutions?
I think that the best area for their help would be in therapies or just to make that sad hospitals more welcome for people. Of course in the areas and close to the patients they can dwell.
3. Would you like to have a dog with a cancer detector included in it’s skill set?
I would like to have a good boy even without that particular skill

Cancer is very hard disease. I like dogs, I know that they have better senses but I don't think that it's good place for using them. As I said, cancer is frequently deadly disease and we should leave it to professionals.
Animals and new medical solutions? It's very hard topic... We can use them in therapies (they are always makes us happy) but nothing more.
I would like to have a dog... without regard to his skill set. I like animals (especially dogs) but I'm living in flat so I don't have place for them. Of course, If cancer detector could help somebody then I would like to have dog with it :)
Yes, I believe that dogs can detect cancer. It is obvious that not all dogs are capable of this. Some are looking for people, some bombs, some dogs are finding drugs, so why not train the dog to detect cancer. Provided that cancer has some kind of special smell, which perhaps we cant feel. But dogs are able to help people for medical purposes, not only thanks to a sense of smell. There are a variety of professions for dogs in the medical industry.

Difficult to say, I'm not a doctor.

2. Do you think that animals can help in any other way to develop new medical solutions?

Yes, of course, but I think training will not be easy and we have to remember that animals can make mistakes (as we).

3. Would you like to have a dog with a cancer detector included in it’s skill set?

Yes, why not.

Yes I think dog can detect cancer because of special smell detection and I thing cat also can feel some feelings or diseases from humans. For example my cat named Dzidzia, she every time go to my sister if she feel bad. Ehh, I thing we can’t develop new medical solution from them because it is just detection no cure. Maybe we can create a cure from another animal which have the ability to remove cancer from himself. Yes sure I would like this ability is much more useful than barking on random things like my dog does every day.

Well, I think that many scientists have already answered this question. Dogs and cats are generally more advanced biologically in detecting different kinds of smells and there were many documented occurrences where a dog or a cat helped to determine whether the patient was ill or not.
I don't know how dogs can help in developing new vaccines or new ways of medical treatments but they for sure can assist doctors when diagnosing patients.
I don't know but it sounds a little bit odd. Sure, some people would like to buy a dog like that.
I don’t think that dogs detecting cancer are a complete impossibility – after all there have been numerous documented cases of dogs accurately detecting small differences in our bodies – like a hormonal change related to pregnancy, for example. They might not be able to identify all forms of cancer, but if they do manage to accurately sense even one kind, that would still be a massive help. Animals have historically been a part of medical research as test subjects, but their usefulness doesn’t end there. I remember reading about a possibility to, after some previous genetical modification, have animals whose bodies would be capable of producing medicines that are currently hard or impossible to synthesize in a lab. Due to the nature of cancer, the earlier it is detected the more likely a successful treatment is, so having a dog with ability to detect early onsets of it would definitely be a positive thing.
I think that animals feel something. For example cats, they come and lay down there where hurts. It seems to me that animals can help material (without details). I think that with the help of animals, medicine to break forward. I of course understand that cancer it is terrible, and is practically not curable. And the most terrible is that it comes from nowhere. In my family there are victims of this dreadful disease too. And yes, of course, I would like to have such dog. My dog will come to me in the morning and will point to the place, and we will go to heal this place at the first stage of a disease. I hope, they will be able to develop this remarkable ability at dogs.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
