Week 10 [17.12-23.12.18] How the fitness brands use social media and influencers to promote their products

Nowadays everyone can share everything and anyone can become someone, which explains a massive rise of fitness influencers and personal trainers in social media. It seems we no longer need education and certificates to instruct others and tell them how to workout. All we need is a popular fitness account with daily updates and videos or information about nutrition and diet to get attention of the social media users and fitness brands. In this article I will analyze how fitness brands use social media and influencers to promote their products.

To understand the phenomenon of fitness brands and their influencers, we first need to look upon the social media platforms they work on. Snapchat and Instagram seem to experience the biggest popularity, though marketing and advertising on them wasn’t that popular few years back. According to Lev Manovich, since Instagram was launched in 2010 it has reached almost 400 million of users, mostly young people who wish to communicate their life through photos and connect to each other. Such great audience’s activity and engagement soon afterwards caused the platform to become one of the premier social medias ‘for brands to craft effective social influencer strategies, execute high-reach, creative and engaging influencer marketing campaigns, and chart long-term Instagram influencer collaborations.’ The reason for such expand of this platform as much as the rise of social media in today’s world might be surprising for some people, especially for the older generation that do not always understand its phenomenon, but studies show that such change comes naturally. Just like once in the past people moved from reading newspapers to watching news in TV, now the audience has moved into their phones and social media. ‘The way people consume content is evolving,’ Evan notices (2016). ‘To capture the attention of audience who spends more time staring at their phones than at television screens, brands must alter their approach to marketing.’ That’s why so called ‘influencers’ are so important for the brands and their campaigns. But what exactly is an influencer? According to Evan (2016), it’s an individual with a big social reach who has the power to make impact on the others and their point of view. Through reaching millions of users through a single photo or video, they can easily bring brand awareness and promote their products, working even more successfully than an ad placed between other posts. Their fame and reach differ from thousands to millions of users, but even the less popular accounts are often given an offer of cooperation with brands as their authenticity and closeness with the audience seems to build more trust and intimacy. It’s been even noticed (Evan, 2016) that influencers nowadays hold bigger power than celebrities, mainly because they seem more ‘real’ and are easier to approach (through, for example, comments or direct messages).

Though some might wonder how it’s possible that fitness business is operating on social media so successfully next to the other popular accounts like fashion and travelling, if to look at Instagram or Snapchat feed, it can be noticed that fitness is slowly taking over the content published there. The hashtags like #fitness or #fitnessmotivation can count up to millions of posts and demand on fitness among the users seem to be growing every day. As Tereza Litza notices (2016), ‘there was a time when fitness motivation was not easily achieved through promotional content, as it seemed distant from the audience’s actual needs and goals.’ Instagram has changed this approach and made the audience interested in staying fit and healthy, with many users posting useful information about workouts and nutrition. This means that Instagram not only allows the users to get the information for free, but it makes it easily approachable and within a reach of hand. The fitness brands understand it – and that’s why they moved onto Instagram.

Questions:
  • Are you familiar with Instagram? Do you like it or not? If yes, what's your favorite content?
  • Have you ever heard about influencer marketing? What do you think about it? Is it better than normal ads?

Comments

Unfortunately, I do not possess much knowledge about Instagram because of how little time I allow for social media. For me Instagram is a complete waste of time. I actually surfed through it once, and did not find out what it can give to me. Usually people that I know are showing photos from their journeys when we meet in person, or send them via messengers, which is the only online communication I am basically using.

1.Are you familiar with Instagram? Do you like it or not? If yes, what's your favorite content?
I think in our time know almost everything instagram. I like it very much, but it takes a lot of time. Most of all I like the themes of fitness, fashion, beauty, creativity. I can find motivation and inspiration there.

2.Have you ever heard about influencer marketing? What do you think about it? Is it better than normal ads?
Yeah, sure, I've heard how marketing affects us. Marketing is an integral part of my job. Marketers are psychologists. The purpose of the ad is to sell a product or service, and marketing has a lot of components:
-Target audience
-the definition of goals and objectives
-Evaluation of results
-Mutual understanding

Hi!
Okay, I see your point. You know, I was asking about Instagram, because of its usage, which I mentioned in article. But I can totally understand, that you're not into this kind of social media.

Thanks for comment :).

Hi Natalia!
Yes, that's the bad side of it - it's time consuming! On the other hand - it's awesome to hear, that you've found some inspiration and motivation.
Cool categories you mentioned there! :)
I can totally agree with you, that marketers are psychologists.

Thanks for your comment and this little marketing lesson! :D

Yes, of course, now it seems to me one of the most popular platforms for advertising, communication, and promotion of the business. I like Instagram. My favorite is @theocean, I can watch different fish and sea animals in the open ocean.
Yes, and I noticed that the advertisement on Instagram is understandable, as soon as I look at something on Youtube, it immediately appears on Instagram. I think that this is the only advertisement that I notice, because I block ads on sites and skip what is now on Youtube, but on Instagram, it appears among the posts and therefore I notice it.

I like using Instagram. I was even addicted to it for a while. I had to remove it that time because I was scrolling a lot losing a lot of time. Now I have it installed again just to check stuff from time to time. I heard about influencer marketing before and I don't mind it. Of course, there's one main problem - people very often spend money on stuff they don't need just because their idol said that something is awesome and he uses it every day which very often is not true. In my opinion, this is a really good way to sell but I don't know how it looks like in reality and I don't know the statistics.
Yes, i like instagram and the ways it helps us to promote our personal brand and not only it. I can't say that i have only 1 topic or 1 person that is my favourite. I get a lot of useful and important information about a lot of people. Have you ever heard about influencer marketing? Sure, i learn it a little bit in my leisure time. Every marketing method can be helpful, it depends on how you use it. I don't believe those persons, who say, that ads are not working or complain about other staff.

I've heard about Instagram, but never used it. Not the kind of content I enjoy. Not so much content to post. Sometimes, friends share Instagram links with me, but that's the limit of my interactions with Instagram.

Influencer marketing exists not only on the Instagram, tho. I've heard about it and I don't mind it. It all depends on what kind of content is the main product of the influencer and how it is connected to the products he advertise.

I am familiar with Instagram, I use it from time to time. I think it's cool because it's simple. It is not saturated with unnecessary things. What I like most about are Boomerang mode and the fact that there are a lot of pictures of beautiful girls, because that's why the guys assume Instagram, I see no other reason.
I've never heard of this kind of marketing, but I think it's a good way to sell, I think it's even better than normal advertising. However, as soon as I can speak in theory, only statistics can confirm it.

I know what instagram is, but I don't use it and don't particularly like it. I don't like various social media platforms in general, and there is nothing about instagram that would make me like it more than other sites.

I've heard about influencer marketing before, though not in much detail. I think that it's propably fairly effective - if done well, then the people being advertised to won't even realise that they are looking at an ad. In addition to that, people are more likely to pay attention to it than a normal ad. With all that in mind, I do think that influencer marketing is better than normal ads.

I, unfortunately or fortunately, do not use Instagram, long ago refused to social networks. But I am familiar with the methods of marketing that are used on the Internet, and the tools that are used to advertise on Instagram. Now, in fact, a century of marketing, and good marketers are worth their weight in gold. Advertising is today one of the main engines of the business, and basically its integral part. It has a very large influence on a person and is informative in nature, and in some cases can influence us on a subconscious level. In general, we can say this is a very powerful weapon.

Of course I am familiar with Instagram. I do miss those times(few years ago) when there was almost no ads, no stories etc. With introduction of Instagram stories this social media changed rapidly. People started using stories over posts, lots of advertising came with it as well. If we talk about fitness, motivation and stuff like that, it’s pretty clear that such content becomes more and more popular each day. Everyone wants to be a fitness coach or a model, show their bodies and muscles to everyone to gather the popularity and crowd’s recognition. On the other hand “less fitness” people become more and more motivated. That’s why fitness industry grows, fitness advertising grows, number of people going to the gym or simply taking sports grows and Instagram as well as Snapchat and the others gain more and more money. By the way it is one of the reasons why you see more and more ads each day.

I’m a person who avoids social media. Personally, I have only a Facebook account for communication purposes. As a young person I’ve heard about such things as Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat but I’ve never used them, so I don’t know how exactly their functioning. Nowadays, advertising and marketing of all kinds surround us from all sides. Of course, I’ve heard about influencer marketing. But for me it’s sometimes hard to find out what that person wants to convey and advertise. Most often these people doesn’t know the product or thing they advertise. Their only goal is to promote themselves.

I'm gonna check this hashtag for sure :).
Haha, at least you can see some ads that you're interested in :).
Thank you for comment and merry christmas!

I can totally agree, that it is addictive ;).
I gotta say it's true, but I think that's how the whole thing works.
Thanks for comment and merry christmas!

Yea, you're right - it's better than normal advertising even in statistics ;).
Thanks and merry christmas!

I didn't have a account on instagram for a long time but I knew what it is. Now I'm using instagram and I think its way better than facebook for example because there is no crappy posts and you can follow whoever you want and you only see their pictures with some text and its better than whole page with ads or some shared articles that you don't want to have anything in common.

Yes I heard about it and I think it's everywhere. I think its better than normal ads because most people use ad block right now and they dont see normal ads. So this is the only think that will show them a product or something that they may be interested in.

Thanks for such a nice summary about marketing :). I can totally agree with you.

I also think that it's a lot better than Facebook. I think it's my favorite from all social medias.
Yep, at least you can see ads of products that you'll probably like.

Thanks for comment,
merry christmas!
I am familiar with Instagram, but I have never posted a lot of photos or creating my own blog. I like it a bit, because it is amazing way to share photos from your trips or any activity with your friends and any other people who are interested in what you do. And of course it can also be used by any company to share their ideas or just advertise themselves.
I have heard about influencer marketing before. And everything depends on what kind of person this influencer is and what product he or she is going to promote. It could be a bit better then normal ads, but if this person has very small audience which is not interested in this product what influencer is going to show, it won’t work at all. But if the blogger is going to show product that match the area of the blog, fans will be interested in it and it will works well.
Yes, I know Instagram. Once I liked both Instagram and Snapchat. Currently, I use only Facebook and Messenger. My favorite content is political content.

Yes, I've heard about influcener marketing. I think it is a great idea on the part of advertisers. I think that it is much better than the usual boring advertisements.

I would say that I know what Instagram is about, but I'm not using it on a daily basis. I like it, but I decided to delete the application from my phone when I realized that the content I used to watch, sports cars, sexy photos, etc. was just waste time for me.

I have heard about influencer marketing. Depending on your target group it can be better or worse compared to regular ads. I won't say that influences convince me more to buy something that well made a proper advertisement.

Yes, of course I am familiar with Instagram and I like it. I have my own, private account where I can post some photos and posts in special place called 'stories'. I am following my friends and famous people (mostly Liverpool FC players like Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino).
I am sure that I am spending more time on Instagram than Facebook and there is everything (beautiful landscapes, football highlights). Yes, it is my favorite content is sport, landscapes, animals and funny videos.
Yes, I have heard about influencer marketing and it can be a good way but it depends on company, influencer and group of people who are following him. I have seen a lot of situations where people were changing their content only for money, lies about item quality and everything what they can do for money. I don't have problem with instagram influencers but only when it is tastefully.

I have account on Instagram and I generally like Instagram as an interesting kind of social media. I don’t like to show a lot from my life, but I like to watch other accounts. Or watch funny videos. Also I follow quite a few accounts that are showing pets - cats or dogs usually :)
Yeah, and this kind of marketing is everywhere. In my opinion this is an effective way to promote a brand because people always want to be like their idols, look like their idols, behave like them and go to the places where their idols love to have lunch or something. It is more targeted but is more efficient.

Yes I use it daily. I think I like it because this social app have a lot of stuff. I love watching animal in free time, how they do something cute etc.. The second thing is watching art. So the photo what people take of the still life, sometime I watch 3D renders because sometimes I’m looking for inspiration or tips.

Influencer marketing in my opinion is better way than normal ads which are sometimes very annoying on websites. But if somebody is going to review some thing and it is payed by the same company in my opinion it is bad influencer marketing.
Those who, did not get used to social networks, feel fear, learning the fact that some begin to add to Instagram literally everything. Actually, there are users whom it is possible to call excessively active. So that it sometimes comes about dependence on social networks. It is explained by work of hormones. Each achievement of the person is followed by production of the certain substances which are responsible for a condition of happiness. Loading of the photo in network and receiving approval from other users is considered by our brain as achievement. And it demands not so many efforts. People who are deprived of congenital talents use it: receiving "likes" in Instagram they become happier, but in reality of special achievements are deprived. So begins to seem that online communication is more interesting also nasyshchenny, than real. But it is difficult to call it serious threat. It is enough to understand the mechanism of work of "dependence" to have an opportunity to regulate the communication on the Internet. If to treat Instagram as to pleasant addition, a window to other countries, it will bring positive emotions and only to improve your life.

Are you familiar with Instagram? Do you like it or not? If yes, what's your favorite content?

Yes I use it as main social network. I like for some features, like recommendations of users and photos, so you can explore new content and open new people to follow, but I hate other features like "instagram direct", which indeed is the worst chat experience ever. My favorite content is travel blogs, they can be educative or expiring, and really motivate me to travel more. They are also useful for finding some interesting spots.

Have you ever heard about influencer marketing? What do you think about it? Is it better than normal ads?

Yes, I here about it a lot, and I hate it. Because content become not personalized but made for advertiser, sterile and advertiser friendly. Also such kind of content, is low quality and biased, so blog become just a business not a cozy place to communicate.
I feel so out of touch when I'm reading such articles. I don't use Instagram (nor Twitter), I don't understand the phenomenon of "social influencers", because I don't have any contact with them.
I actually started my fitness training recently. During summer I loved to spend some time on my bike, but once it got cold I decided I need some regular exercises to stay in shape. So I went to a local fitness club, signed up and met a personal trainer who has set up a series of exercises just for me. Now I just need to keep myself motivated and come for the training every few days. Which I do. I actually found it pretty relaxing. I can just stop thinking for a while, focus on exercises and I feel refreshed once I'm done.
So I'm not really looking for more information and I don't really need a "social influencer" to show me how to keep myself fit. I prefer a professional trainer.

I wouldn't say I am familiar with Instagram. I know for what is it, what you can do in this application and what content you can find, but all of it is not appealing to me, so I actually have never downloaded it on my phone. I have heard about influencer marketing and form me it is neither better nor worse from traditional ads as they have the same purpose, to make you buy the product/service.
