Week 7 [21.11-27.11] Ways of drinking chocolate through the centuries

“Theobroma” the Latin word for a cocoa means literally “food of the goods”; This valuable crop is an important part of Central American culture. Cocoa bean was firstly consumed by pre-Columbian cultures such as Mayas and Olmeca civilization about 5000 years ago. Olmecas noticed that rats eated the fruit, that’s why they considered it edible. These were the first nations to consume chocolate, originally in the form of drink. To prepare it they harvested the fruits at the beginning, then fermented, roasted and crushed them into a paste, next mixed it with water, finally added some spices, chillies, herbs, corn as well as dried flowers – the result was a dense, intensive, quite bitter drink used to cultivate matrimonial ceremonies. They drank it cold and not sweetened. In the early 1500s chocolate was brought to Europe where it rapidly became a popular beverage.

Nowadays there are so many hot chocolate recipes, all totally different than the first one thousands years ago. I’m sure most of us put cocoa powder into the mug, pour water or milk into it and the drink is ready. Name for hot chocolate prepared with milk, water and whipped cream is Chocolat Chaud, which is French creamier version of the normal one. There’s also a very rich Parisian Warm Chocolate prepared with heavy cream and whole milk.

In Argentina they prepare hot milk with a sugar and the vanilla in a mug and serve a thick rectangle of dark chocolate alongside on the plate. It’s the funniest way of preparing hot chocolate, because you have to sunk submarine (our piece of chocolate) into mug by yourself, than the milk becomes a hot chocolate.

Mexicans drink champurrado, which is a chocolate version of their traditional Atole – drink made out of hot corn, masa (type of dough), cinnamon, vanilla and pincillo cones. Piloncillo is a pure cane of sugar of a golden brown color with a delicious rich flavour.

If you need something more spicy, you can always try Xocolatl (also called Aztec chocolate) prepared only with the finest bittersweet chocolate with the addition of a vanilla bean, red chili pepper and cinnamon. It resembles the original chocolate drink with it’s density and savory. For other bold winter favors you could also add to your hot chocolate red chili, orange zest, ginger, almonds, peanut butter, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves or marshmallows.

In summer you can try not only mint chocolate tea, where you replace milk/water with tea but also iced hot cocoa using chocolate or milk ice cubes instead of water.

Ice Hot Chocolate

When I’ve recently hosted some French people, few of them prepared really specific cocoa drink for their breakfast (the rest didn’t eat at all as the French usually) – they mixed cereals and milk with cocoa powder, then added tea to that and lastly sweetened it. For me it looked terrible ; Do you consider it disgusting or rather tasty? Do you have some untypical way for preparing cocoa drink? Which one of the described above would you like to try the most?

There are uncountable numbers of recipes, maybe because benefits of chocolate are known from centuries. It’s a strong aphrodisiac which gives us energy, enhances circulation, improves the libido and could be used as a tonic in infectious diseases as well as digestive disorders. Thanks to world migration all cocoa virtues become famous so now we can enjoy it’s unique taste in thousands forms. Annually, we consume more than three million tons of cocoa beans!

Personally I don't drink any hot chocolate or cocoa. I would like to taste this version with chilli. I experienced many times a situation when something sounded disgusting but when we tasted we discovered something new. I personally drink shake after physical exercise with dark chocolate. I recomend it to everyone: mix two bananas, avocado, some nuts, few dates and water with one piece of 90% dark chocolate. Is amazing that only one piece changes taste to cocoa.

I like this topic :) From those mentioned recepies my personal favourite is Xocolatl. I have to try hot chocolate with penaut butter, because it have to be delicious (have you ever tried chocolate with salt or some chocolate paste with penaut butter?) mint chocolate tea sounds really interesting. I will definitely try those recepies out.

I don't like too sweet food, so for me the best is recipe for Aztec chocolate. My favourite chocolate is 90% of cocoa. Have you ever tried raw cocoa beans? This is just the bitter! Despite all the raw cacao beans are the healthiest form of cocoa, chocolate further contains fat and sugar. Cocoa beans have a lot of antioxidants. Raw cocoa contains many minerals such as iron, chromium, zinc and potassium. However, cocoa beans are mainly the richest source of magnesium. Perfect for people who drinks a lot of coffee :)
Studies has shown that dark chocolate can improve health and lower the risk of hearth disease. There is a huge diffrence between real chocolate and chocolate-like things. Be aware that a lot of the chocolate on the market is crap. You need to choose quality stuff I mean Milka and stuff like that aren't so healthy because they contain a lot of sugar. Real choco is a powerful source of antioxidants and may lower blood pressure.
I enjoy drining hot chocolate, but not too often. It's nice and refreshing taste from time to time, but it's also a sugar bomb. Thanks for a very nice article, I learnt quite a few new recipes that I'll definitely consider trying out when possible :).

What a tasty article ;)
For me, combining chili or other spicy tastes with chocolate sounds scary and despite that it is a popular combination, I haven't tried it yet and I don't think I will in a future.
Once I have heard about strange usage of chocolate. It was in dry version with vegetables like tomatoes or witch meat like beacon. I don't know what to think about it. It sounds disgusting because most of people think about sweets and candies while they imagine chocolate, but on the other hand - it maybe so interesting taste that we can't imagine if we won't try.
If we are talking about this French 'drink' - it doesn't seems disgusting for me. Actually I would like to try it. Of course it's unusual composition of ingredients, but it may be tasty at all.

Thanks for the recipe, I'm going to try it :)
Recently, I've discovered some great drink on the grounds that nobody wanted to eat overriped bananas. I mixed bananas and some nuts, poured prepared earlier coffee to it and added a small amount of cocoa. It was delicious and extremely stimulating, so don't drink it before going to sleep.

I'm glad to hear you like the topic :)
Personally, I would like to taste everything, though I'm not sure I'd like this spicy recipes. I've tried chocolate with hot pepper filling, it was interesting, however I won't eat it again. I've never eaten chocolate with salt, I don't find it appropriate for me ;)
Unknown said…
I also prefer not so sweet sweets, that's why I don't find milk chocolate very tasty, thus my favourite one is semi-dark chocolate. I haven't tried raw cocoa beans yet, I hope one day I would be able to taste it.
Unknown said…
Yes, that's true, dark chocolate and cocoa have many advantages, however we should be conscious what we buy, because there could be many needless and not so healthy additives. I don't buy Milka at all cause I don't like its too sweet taste.

That's great to hear my article inspired you :)
Have a delicious hot chocolate!

Dry version of chocolate with vegetables?! I've never heard about something like that, I can agree it's strange but interesting also. Last summer I eated fruit and vegetable salad quite often, it was great experience tasting really well. That's why now I'm not afraid to try mixing such not matching at first sight things like fruits, vegetables and chocolate.

I dont like sweets so i prefer hot chocolate. In my work we have in a machine hot chocolate but its only sometimes because everyone like it and it finish quite fast. For me the most tasty is "white chocolate" but i suppose its not type of chocolate. Am i right ?? After this article you convice me to drink this "chilli" chocolate
especially now when its cold and windy.
Unknown said…
Some time ago I drunk chocolate with chilli made by Wedel.
To be honest, I'm not a fan of spicy taste, but since that time it's my favourite kind of chocolate. Each type, that I've tried, was too sweet for me. Apart from this one. Chilli papper made a balance which was perfect choice for me. Really delicious. I would recommend to everybody. Even to my enemy if I had one ;)
I love chocolate in every form, the sweeter the better 
I have to try Champurrado, it sounds really interesting. Did you know that in years 2014/2015 we had huge deficit in cocoa? Thanks god years 2016/17 will probably bring substantial surplus.
You should check out this link : http://www.reuters.com/article/us-cocoa-cargill-idUSKCN0YD0A0

Chocolate to be called chocolate needs to contain minimum 35% cocoa mass, and white chocolate already has only 33%. It does not contain cocoa powder, so there is added cocoa fat in the production, thus it's not healthy.
I have no idea why somebody invented "white chocolate", probably for profits as always, however I don't like it; for me it's not tasty at all.
Unknown said…
I'm also not a big fun of spicy food, whatever it is, although I eat it sometimes when I'm ill or just to taste something new, as if it was with chocolate with hot pepper filling. I don't regret tasting it, it was interesting experience, balanced as you said.
Unknown said…
I'd also love to try Champurrado and Atole as well, it sounds perfect for me.
I had no idea there was deficit in cocoa last year ,really poor thing, thanks for the link, it makes the reason for the deficit of cocoa clear.
I love food in general and chocolate is probably one of my favorite things in the world. I'm not scared to try out new things or to mix different tastes, so I would definitely like to try most of those recipies. Mint chocolate tea sounds the weirdest to me and that makes it even more appealing.

I love cocoa, sweet chocolate. As to cocoa I drink cocoa only in the traditional way with milk but intrigued me recipe cocoa on sharply. I don't eat a lot of chocolate because I know that it harms your health. Bitter chocolate is healthy but I don't like it. I remember my grandmother always gave me chocolate :)

To be honest I don't like chocolate too much. Sometimes I feel like eating some dark chocolate with chili. My favourite is this one:

http://www.health-benefits-of-dark-chocolate.com/images/chili-chocolate-012.jpg

Most of milk chocolates I tried are way to sweet for me. It doesn't matter if it's a bar or a cup. After consuming it I always feel like I just put a huge sugar bomb inside. However your article inspired me to try Xocolatl one day. This beverage seems like a nice way to expand my horizons as far as chocolate goes ;)

Very interesting article. I really like to eat chocolate, and even more to drink it. I think the breakfast of your friends was not so bad. I should try to prepare it at home and taste it. I recently convinced to tea with milk, and I remember when I was younger I hated such a beverage. With age, tastes change, perhaps one day, this dish may be delicious for you. From your article I like the most delicious-looking Chocolat Chaud. In real life, unfortunately, I do not drink chocolate, and from what I know, it have good effects on health in small quantities.
I am a huge fan of chocolate, i know that you won’t belive when you look at me, but i almost remmember menu of some fameus polish chocolate-drink shop. My favorite one is the sour chocolate with a cherries on the ground, i just love it. This French poeple’s drink sounds terrible, but there must be something in it so I am gonna test it as soon as i will be preparing some sugar drinks for a friends.
Nice recipe. Thanks for sharing guys. Coming back to the article, I was not aware that there are so many different ways of drinking cocoa. From what you've described I can say that I usually drink a French version of hot chocolate. I also tried the one with red chili, but it wasn't really my taste - it was way too dense.

Some say that adding salt to chocolate give you an opportunity to "feel" the REAL flavour and makes it somehow deeper. I don't have got an ideology, I just liked it :D

I really like your topic, and specially the images of different kind of hot chocolate.
Who doesn’t like chocolate, it increases the level of endorphin that is why it makes people happy and it’s also said that is one of the aphrodisiacs.
I see the way how your French friend prepared their chocolate as testy, sometime I do it my self.

I never tried a cocoa drink with sea salt, however I really like the taste of chocolate with sea salt, so maybe it’s a good idea to try it out.

I would like to try the one with red chilli, looks interesting.
Unknown said…
haha ok, I had no idea that weirdness could encourage someone to try it so willingly ;)

So you're the third person in my life who not only is not crazy about chocolate but generally, rather don't like it.

I've eaten that hot pepper Lindt chocolate, it was ok but normally I don't consume spicy things.
Unknown said…
You could be right, maybe one day I will get to like tea with milk, at heart I would like to give it a try, however I always postpone trying it for another occasion.
Unknown said…
Where did you try this sour chocolate with a cherries? Could you recommend me some unusual place with hot chocolate?
Unknown said…
You're welcome :)
Yes, that's astonishing how diversified is the world, even in regard of drinking chocolate.
Unknown said…
Yes, who does not like chocolate...? I heard it only from three persons in whole my life.
It definately makes me happy when I'm having a bad day.

Those recipes are pretty interesting, perhaps I'll try some of them. I have heard of mixing drinkable chocolate with pepper or chili, and some of those mixes look quite delicious. Really nice pictures, too.
I like my hot chocolate sweet, plain and simple. However it's interesting to see that you can prepare it in so many ways. The hot chocolate with chili pepper looks the most interesting, looks almost like a pudding.

I was really interested in this topic, because I found there many informations which I haven’t known before. From these all recipes you presented, I would try the Xocolatl, because I’m not used to eat very sweet food, so this combination – bitter chocolate with chilli, seems very nice for me. Sometimes I prepare cacao(but without whipped cream) and I was really surprised that it’s the French version of hot chocolate.

Thank you for such a sweet post!
Personally, I rarely drink a chocolate, but after this topic I want to cook some. I prefer to eat chocolate and really like to try new tastes or some weird combinations of chocolate and something else.
From this list I would like to try that one where you make your drink by yourself,
dipping the chocolate into the cup. You always can stop a process and just eat one little piece.
What I really want to try is a chocolate with a chilli. Usually, I don't eat spicy food at all, but as a combination of flavours , it might taste great.
If i good remember it was a Wedel choclate drink shop and i'm not sure if it was in menu or only in special month

It's really interesting and well modetared article. Personally I love chocolate in every form. When weather is hot, then I used to eat chocolate in bars but if it's little colder I love to make a drink from powder and milk. Those drinks have one disadvantage - it makes me sleepy :) but I guess it is the first and the last drawback. I've never tried to drink chocolate with chilli and I have to do that.
Not so long ago I wached movie "chocolat". Did anyone see it? This is the story about a woman who opened a chocolate shop in a small French village. This incident shakes up the rigid morality of the community, because they identified chocolate with sin and passion. I am not "chocolate" or "romantic comedy-drama movie" person but I can admit, that this movie was quite interesting and based on that I can say, that chocolate symbolizes, as does no other food, luxury, comfort, sensuality, gratification, and passion.

I’m not a huge fan of drinking chocolate. I find it way too sweet and bitter. But of course, it depends on the taste of the person. I like when in a restaurant, barman gives you a shot of water with a chocolate, so you don’t feel this intense taste after drinking. In some restaurants, they don’t serve water with it.

I love drinking chocolate. Especially when I was in Austria and I ski, chocolate it was a great drink. I used to drink coffee but I really feel bad after that.
Great post. Honestly I didn't know that there are so many ways of drinking chocolate. It's amazing. I love chocolate and I think I'm addicted to it. I would love to try all those ways. I think it might be interesting. The greatest thing about chocolat is that you can actually never be bored with it. If it's to sweet you can just eat bitter one or if you would like to try something new there are so many new chocolates: with crackers or with some fruit filling. There is chocolate for everyone. Chocolate reminds me about romantic movies and cold winter evenings. Chocolate is linked with every good memory in my head. When you have bad mood you can eat/drink chocolate, when you happy, do the same. Chocolate is just perfect for every occasion.

I don't understand how you could drink chocolate with tea, or mix cocoa with water. Personally I fill a small pot with milk and melt 3/4 of a dessert chocolate bar inside. Sometimes I add a bit of cinnamon. Topping it with tiny marshmallows is always nice - I buy those at Marks&Spencers but you need to hurry, they're closing shop in our glorious country for some reason. Same goes with cocoa - I mix it with hot milk and some sugar. It's usually a good idea to wait for it to cool down a bit and peel off the film that forms on top.
I like to try different chocolates at E. Wedel Chocolate Lounges. Most of them are tasty, but those served cold are best.
I would probably love to taste most of those chocolates mentioned in this article, but Xocolatl and Champurrado sound like the best ones.

I can not read it I just want to try all of that types of Chocolate and tell You what is my impression. Most of the times I am delighted to new taste sensations, I remember only onec when I was disapointed about chocolate and it was in Spain in Malaga where tradicionaly is drinking or i should say eating hot chocolate with churros. Churros is a fried-dough pastry can either be thin or long and thick. I was excited to try this and it was huge disappointment.

Cacao Bliss Reviews 2020 - Check What People Say

I can't believe the negative reviews. From the moment I first tried this, I haven't gone a day without it! Granted, I was already used to raw cacao bliss reviews and dark chocolate, so for me the flavor is just right. Not too sweet at all and definitely not watered down.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
