Week 7 [21.11-27.11] Augmented Reality

I have decided to write about the augmented reality (AR). AR is a live, direct or indirect view of a real world environment with a computer generated layer of sound, video, 3D models or GPS data. This technology extends our current perception of reality.
Augmented reality is nowadays one of the hottest technologies available on the market. The system that combines reality with the virtual world is considered to be the most lucrative direction for entrepreneurs. AR software gives viewers many benefits. While big companies produce hardware, developers with 3D artists can produce profitable content to sell in online software stores.
Right now doctors use AR technology during surgery to achieve better results. Airplane pilots uses AR. Also AR is used at schools.

Many companies decided to use AR in marketing. For example, Pepsi marketing department had a great idea to promote the company on bus stops in an unusual way.

But let’s look for some real an cases. Mix of AR and GPS can help drivers to drive much safer. The Video presents a prototype of augmented reality gps navigation.

Learning cooking is another impressive example.

This idea can solve a problem with learning or finding how to prepare new kinds of food. Some entrepreneurs will sell devices for learning cooking that can store culinary recipes, which you will buy at online stores.

Another creative use of AR is a virtual fitting room, which allows us to wear clothes and glasses virtually. We could choose best products for us without going to a real store.

AR can also be used to  repair a car.
A  mechanic with this technology could cut prices down and accelerate repair time. Many owners of car stations will be interested in AR.

AR can also improve product previews such as allowing a customer to view what's inside a product's box without opening it.

In combat, AR can be used as a networked communication system that shows useful battlefield data onto a soldier's display in real time.

AR can enhance tourists experience by providing information on user display during sightseeing.

The biggest advantage of AR is that it gapped the bridge between the digital and real world. Now it is possible to experience world on a whole new level through AR features and applications.

Questions:
What do you think about augmented reality?
Would you buy some device with software that will learn you how to cook or other things?

What other possibilities does this  technology have or could have?

It looks very interesting. So far, I was thinking that it can be used in apps like Snapchat just to bring fun to us, but now I can see a lot of purposes to use it for.
I would definitely buy a car with this kind of GPS to travel easier. It can really help to drive safer and the tips of GPS are more clear for drivers.
With this technology life can become like in an SF film where we put special glasses, look at something and we know everything about that person or item. It would be amazing!

This form of advertising for Pepsi's great! I think AR and VR are the most popular new technologies topic. For me AR has more nice usage for now. Maybe you know this ikea app: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDNzTasuYEw ? I think AR is really useful and can also be a form of fun for example Pokemon GO. There are many applications that allow each of us to try their hand with augmented reality for example Aurasma (https://www.aurasma.com).
The possibilities are endless, augmented reality is truly a great technology to have, and I'm sure that it will become even more important in the future. It's especially nice for education purposes IMHO, as visualizing things students are learning about could improve understanding of the subject, especially in rather complex 3D-models of particular things. Not to mention other usages like games (Pokemon GO) and alike, which are great as well!

I think that augmented reality is a revolutionary thing and it will be commonly used in the future.

I was following one of the augmented reality projects - Google Glass. It's sad that it failed, I guess its form factor was too creepy for regular use. However augmented reality is a tech trend now - winner of the latest TechCrunch Disrupt, the world's leading authority for revolutionary startups, presented an app that shows the price, all required details and 3d model when you hover on any device in the store. That's simply amazing.

When I think about AR I can see few problems:
1. Profiling: The use of facial recognition technology, combined with geo-location and augmented data will lead to a seamless integration of our online and offline lives. As a result of these developments, a person walking around in the physical world will no longer just be a person, but will be their physical self along with a digital profile and other information that either the person itself or others make available online,
2. Unauthorized Augmented Advertising: Advertisers and tech companies are drooling over the possibilities of monetizing objects & spaces in the physical world by augmenting digital ads onto them in real-time,
3. Physical danger: Augmented Reality, like any mobile media technology presents some real physical safety issues. If you think mobile phones are currently a distraction while driving a car, think of an augmented windshield feeding you driving directions, along with more data about your surroundings than you may need.

That's way I am a little bit hesitated of using it

Yes, it's would be awesome to drive a car and have nagivation on the car glass. Probably in close future you will buy car with this feature out of the box. Life in future definitely will become more like nowadays Sci-Fi movies, it's predictable looking at the development of technology.
Piotr Basiński said…
IKEA app is great, to be honest I see it for the first time. Now I can't wait to try it. Do I need a ikea catalog to use this app? Yes Pokemon Go is the most important example of AR game, I should include it in my presentation.
Piotr Basiński said…
You are right that using AR in schools will improve understanding of the subject. Students will learn new topics faster and with more passion. Education of the future will be strongly connected with Augmented reality.
Piotr Basiński said…
For Google Glass it was too early for start so it must fail. People have to be introduced to new solutions slowly. Otherwise they resign from using new technology and creators wil be forced to refer it.

Augmented reality still requires a lot of development and improvemnt but I strongly belive that it will be the most common form of multimedia in the future. We won't have tvs, phones and computers. Our senses will be almost integrated with cyber-space at all times. It can be a little scary, but I think it's possible to create good enough failsafes and it will help us.
Piotr Basiński said…
Your arguments are good. It is true that AR technology can cause some problems. Third argument is one of the strongest points that make me hesitated of using it. It's can be dangerous to get a distraction while driving.
As with many modern technologies the possibilites of AR are limitless. It right now still has some shortcomings, but they will surely be improved in the near future. I think that those driving systems will become much better and much more common, thing like TV will probably either merge completely with computers or become an AR technology on their own.

For drivers it is a great thing, increase safety. I need to learn was cooking haha :) In a few years, the driver will not be needed at all because the car will do everything for him. I'm curious how it will look like the future. My mother told me when 30 years ago she watched a movie in the cinema in 2016 cars had to fly :)
Piotr Basiński said…
Yes it's predictable that AR will become as common as TV is now. We just need to wait a little bit for AR that will be in everyday usage.
Piotr Basiński said…
So we will need shorter time to see AR in action, than we need to see flying cars. Year after year ar will become more and more popular so we will be able to enjoy the benefits of it.

So you find the most interesting branch of content produced on vr/ar. It's probably motor of success vr/ar in the world.

AR is the future, and soon will be used for everything, not just gaming. I wat to purchase AR device because now comes out more interesting applications dedicated to it. But what about the idea of GPS, it seems to me that it could fail. Some elements showing up on the screen could cover what is happening on the road. As for the application that uses this technique, I saw that Ikea also has application where you to set up, the furniture from the catalog and see how they will look in your home. I downloaded also application, where you see the satellite crashes in a place where you are.
Piotr Basiński said…
I also see that "elements showing up on the screen could cover what is happening on the road" can cause problems, but maybe creators of navigation will find solution for this. That it will be possible to use gps navigation safe.

Augmented reality will probably be where it's at in the future. Google Glass was a failure design wise, but the idea itself is not bad. Being informed about the things you want to be on the go, seeing hints while driving, no space wasted for ads, that's just convenient.

WOW! Thank you for the videos! I would like to have such a bus stop or similar thing somewhere in Warsaw. It must be such an amazing experience to see something like that!

I have also heard about a program using the AR in order to make people drive more safely.

I guess that this will be a new way of addressing to people as nowadays.

I think the Augmented Reality may be the 'next big thing' although it still needs a lot of work on it to become popular. Right now even Virtual Reality is a bit expensive and hard to work with, and Augmented Reality is far more complicated. The example of Google Glass and controversy around it showed us that society isn't ready for bringing AR to everyone.

In my opinion Augumented Reality is really cool technology. It might be very useful, for example those driving improvements you mentioned or apps for doctors.
However, i think we need to wait a little bit more for really good apps. I think that price is also quite a problem right now.

Another great use of AR is live translation. This could be very useful during traveling. Here's a video showing how it works:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06olHmcJjS0

In my opinion AR is the thing we all will live in the future. This could really improve our safety not only in cars but also in other areas of life. For example to identify someone on the street.
This mix of AR and GPS looks awesome, i’d love to try it out. I think this technology can really change the world what we know. Some days ago I bought a google VR it changed my vision of youtube movie. I have to tell you it’s awesome. 360' Movie looks so awesome. Also porn industry are increasing financial outlays for promotion material in this technology. What will be next generation of VR and AR ? I hope that we will be able to feel the emotion what it gives us not just by the eyes but also by the touch.

No way! I would like to buy such devices. Using of something like this is a great experience by itself; moreover, it is wonderful when you can achieve something by using them.
What came in my mind is that AR devices could be used as a chemical lab. Scientists can make some reaction which could be dangerous in real life without any harm. It's a great way to explore some new and maybe a way to find some medicines which people are really waiting for.
Bartosz Łyżwa said…
Great subject to talk about. There are awesome possibilities to use AR in medicine, mechanics and many many more. I'm not sure if I would like to buy another device to use AR but I think we won't have to buy because we already have smartphones and other devices to use AR. Now we are blurring border between reality and virtual reality.

AR is a big new thing which will affect our lifestyle and it even already affects it. Since childhood, I always dreamed to have some kind of an extra layer of reality, which gives you an extra information about the current situation. I had a chance to use Google Glass for 1 week. And ignoring all the purely technical issues of using a product, the general experience is great. For example taking pictures of people falling down from a bike by just winking an eye.

I think augmented reality will replace virtual reality in the future. VR is now where personal computers were twenty years ago, augmented reality later will do revolutions similar to what smartphones have done few years later by doing the best possible combination of our true reality and created one. Virtual reality is only suitable for office, home, games rooms. AR is suitable everywhere. For public transport, car or on a walk. Of course, we still need to wait a bit for this type of equipment, which will be inexpensive, self-contained, wireless, cool looking, light and working much better than the very expensive and not very convenient solutions we have today.
I think AR is great thing and will be the next boom after VR.
It is better than the VR because it adds something to the real world and don't replace it.
Piotr Basiński said…
Yes AR is much better than VR, it allow to get much more usages from this tech. It will be great to see this technology in action in next years.

Augmented reality is one of those 90s science fiction things that I'm really excited to see happening right now. From games to traveling, cooking and even medicine, I think this technology has a ton of great uses. It could be used in countless ways in education, professional training and such.

As for me, yes, if the technology becomes affordable I would very much like to have something that enables me to augment the world around me.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
