Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] Miscommunication

Have you ever wondered how much time or/and money would be saved if people listened consciously? Have you ever thought of how bad and good communication affects our daily lives? How important is communication in today’s world?

Miscommunication is a result of either bad message, poor communication channel or a bad listener. It’s a well-known fact that great consequences come with a human error all around the world. How to prevent it? Is it possible to create an environment that will help us to communicate better? Is communication even worth talking about? Can any education about communication improve the way we live? Should people learn more to listen or to speak?

Recently I stumbled upon quite an interesting video, which emphasizes the importance of the way people communicate and sheds some light on specific aspects of it. If you have any thoughts about the video and all the questions or if you have any interesting stories, please share them.

Our voice is a great tool. Be responsible for it.

I can agree that there would be much time or money saved by improving communication between people but hearing about voice as a tool and power of it, there comes to my mind something greater. Let’s take into consideration people having problems with their psyche, I don’t care about the roots of the problem. We have great medicine and people try to cure it but usually the best effect will have talk with this people. Sometimes you can even prevent someone from committing a suicide. On the other hand, we sometimes hear about young people that have committed a suicide because of people speaking ill about them. To simplify, I think that our voice has a great power because we can save someone’s live or kill someone.

Expressing oneself is very important. Misunderstandings can cause problems in work like wasting time bacause someone told you to do something and you understood it differently. Time is money. Sometimes by the wrong choice of words you can offend someone even tough you didn’t wanted to.

You posed a very interesting question: “Should people learn more to listen or to speak?” and my answer is both. You asked this questions as if those actions weren’t connected but they are. People who listen carefully and encourage another person to express their thoughts are the ones who can start a conversations by referring to what the person has previously told them. That way we make that person feel heard out and appreciated. It’s a circle in which both the sides are beneficial.

Great points ... but what about looking at it from the other side ... why do people focus on the sensorial, emotional or political aspects of people speaking, and not on the informational content of what is being said.

Good communication can definitely save people a lot of time and money. I am sure every person that ever worked directly with clients can relete to that. Either you work as a salesman a graphic designer or web developer it is always hard to determine what are the clients needs and what will really make them happy. Ever more so when it comes to technology, when most likely the client has no clue haw does a given product work.

Thanks a lot for this great speech. I would like to emphasise the situation, when a person tries to present his opinion as a fact. I hate, when people persuade and bomb me with fake facts, thinking that they're right. I even don't discuss with them just because it's useless and I waste my time. Remember, when you are not sure about some facts, it's better to withdraw from discussion.

Good communication is absolutely critical if you want to achieve at least something in life. For example it's not important if you have bright idea if you can't express it. "Rain man" is ideal proof. On the other hand you have danger to cross the line where you start to put more meaning to form of the message instead of it core. In fact it's what marketing all about. And I personally don't like such consumerism approach in life. In conclusion all of us should learn to communicate better.
I think "Pace" is perhaps the most difficult to implement. We live in a world where people don't have the patience to listen to someone who speaks slowly. You'll get interrupted constantly, or people will simply stop listening because you're taking up too much of their time. Too frequently you'll have to say what's on your mind really quickly, or not at all.

As for the video, I agree that it's very important when the speech of the speaker is clear and comprehensible, the diction is crucial. Some days ago, when I was on the train, I heard the conductor said something, but I couldn't understand him because of his bad pronunciation.
But the plot/story is as important as the pronunciation. Even if the speaker uses the right pace for the speech, makes pauses, speaks loud enough, but you are not interested in the subject, you won't listen to him. There are many channels on Youtube with great YouTubers, many of them make good-quality videos, speak correctly, but you won't follow every one of them if you don't fancy subjects of their channels.

I experience this from the very beginning of my life. I am sure that just calm and light explanation of your thoughts is much better than fighting.
You must always explain everything as understandable as you can for the "current" person. Not the common explanation, but the personal approach.

Communication is really very important. I know that from work. There were alot of situations when communication caused misunderstandings between colleagues from different teams. Or even more, lack of communication could lead to situation when few teams do the same thing in the same time. And what a terrible feeling when after some time you've discovered that someone is working or has implemented some stuff that you could simply use instead of developing it from scratch.

An important topic that is. Understanding each other is a fundamental in human interactions and overall actions. Miscommunication leads to misundertading and that leads to a disaster. The seven sins mentionted in the TED Talk I agree those are not nice things to do. I'm all in for a HAIL concept. Not sure about power of voice but above all those things I think the willness to listen, to understand, to feel and respect that person which is trying to communicate with us are crucial in communicating. Same with speaking, expressing ourselves, passing on ideas, not making it overcomplicated, taking into consideration language, the choice of words the other person can understand or is more familiar with, that all matters. Not to mention body language but thats another story.
In my opinion ability to communicate has been in denial since globalization of internet and creation of e-mails. With how much time and money we started saving by just simply switching to e-mails as our main form of communication people got lazy and lost their ability to properly form a message. Unlimited data plans for cellphones and text messages are to blame too we no longer need to prepare daily mail and then bring it to post office or post box thus we don't put much thought into what we are saying just that we say it.

Great example was (before they recently expanded it ) Twitter with their 140 characters long message limit people who used this platform struggled to incorporate character and thus word limit into their messages and that's why we got it expanded.

In today's world communication being so easy is as important as it was before but current generation does not put much thought into what they communicate and how it will be perceived on the other end all because of how easy is to send another message or make a call and fill in what should be communicated in a first place.

I totally agree with you. It is so important to listen, but it is also important to speak. You just simply can't influence or inform people without ability to speak properly. On the other hand you can miss so many crucial informations when not listening to the others. There is always someone who has precious advices based on their knowledge, skill set or experience. So if you really want to become a successful person you have to both listen and speak to other people.

Of course the conscious communication is important, but for people who have something to say. Many people, especially politicians who are best at this, say bullshits and people listen to them. I consider that this movie should be watched for intelligent people who can't spread their knowledge because of miscommunication. However I find it useful in my career, because as we know, IT specialists usually work in teams and sometimes we have to show our applications to the public.

Good comunication is not easy and obvious - there are many problems. One of the thing that helped me with comunication was realising, that the other person may not know what I mean/what I want/what my problem is, so I have to explain it. It helped me a lot, because there is less problems with understanding what am I talking about and the other person doesn't have to ask me a lot of questions, so it take less time.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.

Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam?
