Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] Habits

Habits and what they are.

I bet everyone is familiar with a feeling of doing something automatically in our everyday life. Then there is a wake-up call and we realize that we didn’t even think of doing it but we did it anyway. No power wasted, pure instruction set run by one of deepest and oldest part of our brain. It could be nail biting, playing with hair, snacking late at night or even avoiding eye contact (didn’t seem like a habit at all) and many more. In fact almost everything can become a habit. Now guess what, also everything that a habit can be “dehabitized”. Habits are neutral, it’s just a mechanism, but they can cause pretty much damage (like gambling). They are also used by world champions (like Michael Phelps) and super big companies (like Target) to make a change. Habits affecting your life extremely are called keystone habits. The keystone habit is a game-changer, so by disarming or developing it we can end up being completely another person. Let’s dive into the topic.

The main difference between a habit and a behavior is that the first one is simply the latter but repeated regularly. It’s worth pointing out that the habit occurs subconsciously, as I mentioned at the beginning, so we do things we didn’t consciously ask about our brain to do. All habits can be broken down into a three-step process:

  1. Habits are triggered by cues
  2. Cues lead to a routine
  3. Routine finally culminates in reward

Intuitively then, when you recognize a bad habit you can avoid the cue it’s triggered by. Likewise, if you identify the good guy, you can build its cue. Obviously, our lives are awesome and bad habits develop magically by themselves but it’s  way harder or it borders on with impossible to build a single useful one.

It’s quite interesting what happens in our brains when a habit is triggered. When we are exposed to the cue, our brain figures out it’s time to run a specific routine. If it works well , we get a reward and our brain gets certain amount of dopamine. That habit is a young one. If we take a look at the old-timer, which has been a while in our brain, we can see that the dopamine surge happens just right after we have an encounter with the cue. To simplify, let’s take a look at a smoking habit. When you start smoking, you don’t feel so excited about going out and having a cigarette. However, try to smoke for some time (no, don’t do it) and you will feel pretty anxious about going out for a smoke during a break.

This whole habit stuff wouldn’t be so significant if habits were not used by the big guys in the world. Michael Phelps or rather his coach Bob Bowman believed that the key to victory was creating right routines, so habits that would make Michael the strongest swimmer. In 2008, in Beijing, Michael Phelps established a new world record, nobody knew his googles were filled and he couldn’t see anything. He made it, because of his extraordinary training. Every day he was asked to plan every possible situation in water, to imagine how he swims, jumps and wins. This quickly became a routine that developed into a habit, a habit that led him to the top.

Another big case you should know is about is the  Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) - a corporation that, for nearly a century, had manufactured everything from the foil that wraps Hershey’s Kisses and the metal in Coca Cola cans to the bolts that hold satellites together. Long story short, a new executive of Alcoa, Paul O’Neill, decided to make Alcoa the safest company in America. His approach was totally different from his predecessors, not a single word about business, just safety. He declared that his plan is to make Alcoa the safest company in America. Right after this announcement one of the investors started calling his clients to sell their stock immediately. He admitted a while after that it was literally the worst piece of advice he gave in his entire career. O’Neill retired in 2000, after 13 years of his career in Alcoa, the company’s annual net income was five times larger than before he arrived, and its market capitalization had risen by $27 billion. By attacking one keystone habit the whole organization has changed its way of functioning.

There are lots of inspiring stories how people change their lives. Sometimes they make it happen not being aware of such thing as a habit. I would love to introduce you to all of them but then I would have to simply rewrite the book I read. If you want to dig further and you feel like it’s worth your time, I suggest looking up “The Power of Habit” or Charles Duhigg on the internet.

You are welcome to share your precious thoughts and stories. All feedback is appreciated.

In my opinion the topic of habits and their influence in our lives is very deep. Nevertheless, we can identify bad habits which can even lead us to death and the good ones that may improve our live or health condition. We often hear about good habits like drinking water right after waking up. This is example of good habit which can improve our health. Other example of good habit but having influence on quality of our live is good time management. If you won’t focus on it, you may create bad habit of wasting time while it would be better for you to have habit of good time management. Dealing with habits often depends on our willpower and psyche. Some people can quit smoking after 20 years without any help, it’s their own decision whilst others needs medicines to quit smoking after 1 year.
I’ve recently read that the hardest habit to break is called “Excessive Screen Time”. We spend hours in front of a computer at work, we do our homework on iPad, we eat in front of tv, we scroll Instagram or news in every free moment and we read book on our kindles. Its basically all we do and it’s a habit that is pretty much impossible to break. Nonetheless we should try eating a meal without tv on, read na actual paper book or listen to a podcast while on public transport. Your eyes will thank you in 20 years :D

On the one hand I like my routine - I know what to do, I know how long it will take (for example in the morning), but on the other hand, when I won't do something or something will disturb me I always feel weird - it makes me uncomfortable, that my routine isn't fullfilled.
By routine we are doing some stuff unconsciously and you're not sure what and how you were doing, but by making something a little bit different you're forcing yourself to pay attention and to remember it - for example close the doors with your left hand instead of right one - you won't worry if you did it.
Also, by making everything the same you're not developing your brain - this a muscle, so it have to be trained. My friend has read somewhere that you should go or drive one new way/road to stimulate your brain - generally do something different, not as usual or today. You can even turn left instead of right when you're walking your dog and it will be enough.

Very good article, propably all of us have some habits. For example when I get up in the morning i drink coffee. It doesnt matter if its strong or not, I do it every day just because its my habit. Another habit is facebook. I scroll it every time i wake up and every time before I go to sleep. Propably there is nothing new on the wall in the morning but im still doing it…

Curious if you could identify the reward your brain is looking for :)

I agree, it's totaly worth it to break a routine. It feels like you experienced more that time. Alhtough if you do it every day it becomes a routine, right?

Interesting, I realized that when I was about to eat something I needed some distraction. Indeed, screen time occurs too often during the day.

Some people who smoke are more likely to defend the statement that this is a very serious addiction and cannot be cured without medicines. Some people don't. From my observation, it's usually the people from the first group who don't quit.

The book "Power of Habit. Why We Do What We Do, and How to Change" by Duhigg Charles that you mentioned completly changed my view on my own life. It opened my eyes and had an enormous influence on my life. Habit is a fantastic tool to change your life once you get to know how it works. It still requires a lot of work, but it's easier to work on self improvement when you know how to. You can acknowledge the bad habits and their triggers in order to get rid of them as well as create some new habits. Even such simple thing as making your bed every morning can have a grat impact on your mood throught the day and as a result change your life for the better. Great topic!

Habits are extremely important when talking about healthy lifestyle. Many people try to lose weight or start excercising but they do not make things they do habits. They eat healthy but when they reach the weight or look they want, they immediately return to old, bad habits instead of creating new, better ones. And then they gain weight again. If you want to achieve something in your life you have to improve your habits and make them routine. It requires a lot of work and self-discipline but is definitely worth it.

I believe that habits can be both bad and good and most of our habits are hard to notice. Therefore, in my opinion, you can not just get a new habit or get rid of the bad ones. Habits are what we acquire, depending on our lifestyle, on how we behave for a long period. Sometimes the simple willpower of one person is not enough to influence his habits. Sometimes we need some other person to help us or we just need a change in the situation (moving, changing jobs, etc.)

I can really recommend Charles Duhigg's book which this post is heavily based on. It might improve your personal life, as many techniques apply both to life and business, but it will especially help you if you want to eventually open your own business. It actually says a lot about people and how they think, understanding which helps very much when creating a business wanting to sell either products or services. Book is a strong 8/10 for me and I am certainly keeping it for future reference :)

The topic is really interesting. I'd like also read about the difference between habits and instincts. Previously I've heard little about it.
Back to the topic, I have some experience with building good habits. Like in your example with smoking, I decided to drink more water after having read an article about benefits of it. And it worked well. I drink about 2 liters a day, feel really good and can't imagine my life without so much water. So, I think that building habits are not as difficult as breaking bad ones. But I also heard many stories about people who gave up smoking easily. I still don't understand why some people can do it without any efforts, but other suffers.
There are no ideal people in this world. Each person has some traits of character as well as habits. But there are people, who try to control them or those ones, who even do not notice theirs. Habits are an indispensable part of each person, and even if one states that he does not have bad habits for example, usually such people just try to avoid problems and forget about their drawbacks.

I've read once a really similar article but about creating your own routine. They said that when you do something for 23 days in a row, you get used to it. I am now working on creating my own routine, but here comes the problem: you must work only on your routine. No random parties, no random stuff to doin your checklist. Only routine. Tough? But in future it will be much easier I think. The Habits are created to make your life easier. Even the bad ones!

Ah habits the directors of our lives. It all really orbits around those, is built on top of it. And those are tricky because we can be unaware of them, even so, they affect our live on every level. So developing good habit and getting rid of bad one is a simple solution to achieve what we want to achieve. I just love some of my bad habits so much that I can't get rid of them... I'll do it tomorrow.
I agree with you but only in half. There are also many cases when people do so as you say but after they achive their goals they go even further and further. "Healthy lifstle habits" are good but still you should have them under control.

In my opinion good habits are the way to the true success. For example, I saw many people who wanted to change themselves physically.
They were using a well-chosen diet and professional advice from personal trainers. After getting the dream result, most of them
with a tilt back. Why? Because they ate back unhealthy things, which made the body accustomed to over the years. The example shows that changes first must be done mentally.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
