Week 4 [6.11- 12.11] - Surprisingly romantic behavior

Sparkling, original gifts tailored to preferences of a unique individual, amazing apartments… Is this something along the lines of “What to do to win the love of your life?”. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Now I have a surprise for you! It’s all about... animal courtship!
I have some interesting facts for you.

The male of the European spider Pisaura mirablilis has to show that it is  better than its opponents. It  wants to please its partner by bringing it an engagement gift. When it catches a fly, it wraps it up with its own thread and gives it to the female. Which one of you doesn’t dream of a partner who will give you delicacies like that?

The females know that the more food they have, the stronger their children will be.

Another interesting animal is the Gray Tern. It is a bird of Arctic tundra. These are very aggressive and beautiful animals. Also in this case we can say that “the way to a female’s heart is through her stomach”. Their history usually begins during the breeding season. The males fly high, making circles in the air. The females know they are looking for a wife. Instead of the first date, the male offers his dream female… fresh fish! However, the male will not give the fish until it is sure it is the only one. Then its trial period begins. It must show its partner that it cares about it and… bring it a lot of food every day! The female must be sure that when it takes care of its chick, the male will feed it.

A Fish (Nurse) from the Lake Malawi lives at the sandy bottom, where it defends its territory. Gentlemen dressed in blue suits build distinctive mounds inside their territory. By moving sand in their mouths, they form a volcano (up to 50 cm in diameter). Males care about the aesthetics and details of these underwater apartments, fearing that the skilled eye of the female will spot imperfections and then another gentleman will win the selection. It looks quite extraordinary. There are many mounds in short distance from one another. It looks like a market, and at one such market there can be up to fifty partners who are looking for ladies. When a female visits a male in his mound, she approaches him and presents her beautiful colors on the side. When both the admirer and his mound are approved by the female, it enters its apartment and lays the eggs.

Ptilonorhynchidae is a family of birds that are considered to be one of the most unusual birds in Australia and New Guinea. Due to the fact that predatory mammals of these regions mainly prey on animals at night, male birds build houses for their females during the day. They are ingenious and build corridors and alleys from twigs. Fruit gardens are also the norm! Moreover, males decorate the gazebos with various shining objects, and finally paint them with colorful berry fruit.
Some species even construct big palaces for their princesses! In these buildings, there are even separate rooms connected by corridors. Males prepare feasts of fruit for their mates!
Males  are aware of the competition, so they often sneak building materials and tinsel from one another. Ladies are privileged in this situation, because all they need to do is wait and watch what each male has to offer.
These birds are extraordinary engineers!

Animals and insects sometimes are really romantic! I enjoy programs about nature, so I've seen a lot of such behaviors. Wild world won't stop to amaze me!
Gifts, dances, spending all life together, making 'home', taking care of children - animals truly are amazing.
Recently I've seen one of those programs, it was about raising children - you'd be surprised how many species are raising children together! Mostly it is because of food (it is easier to gather food and take care of children if there are more than one parent), safety.
I enjoyed your article - beautiful pictures (except one with spider ;)

The last bird is the most interesting. I didn't know that birds can build rooms and tunnels. People sometimes do the same things as animals. For example at the beginning we invite people we like to romatic dinner. Good food helps relationship. Later we start familly and build a house. Sometimes people are like this bird and they choose you because you have a big house. Nothing disappears in nature.

Thanks ;) When i find article about it, it made me laugh. But when i started to think more deeply about it I found that it's beautiful that every type of animal has it own habits. We can say that they have their own culture. They all differ but still from one perfect system.

Interesting post and selection of animal courtship examples.

I certainly wouldn't say no to a feast of fruits! :) In my next life I want to be a female bowerbird.

There are also quite a few examples of touching monogamous partnership behaviors in animals. Bald eagles have a mate partner for life. Even though they spend winter alone they reunite with the same partner during each breeding season. Grey wolves alphas are also mainly monogamous.

I find dancing seduction techniques particularly entertaining, like a popular "Moonwalk" dance by a red-capped manakin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o42C6ajjqWg
or this poor spider dancing a dramatic tango to save his life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQbScg3r1oQ&feature=youtu.be&t=1m20s

Anmial world still can amaze everyone of us. I really like watching tv programs like National Geographic Wild or all nature shows which are commented by sir David Attenborough. The ways to show appreciation to your loved one are so vast in animal world that we people would never to come up with similar idea. I remember watching once how Albatrosses show their love to their intended. They come closer and start touching gently eachother's beaks while screaming loudly. Then they try to "wash" each other by pecking delicately their feathers and in the end they simply hug. Like sir David Attenborough said "if love, as we undestand it, exists in nature, then surely this must be it"
Well, its pretty interesting facts about European spider "Pisaura mirabilis". it's just an amazing similarity between us(people) and them (animals). Sometimes when we fall in love we can do some stuff and didn't even consider why we do this, for example buying some really expensive gifts or doing some really crazy things, and at this moments we're just so similar with them case fo instincts wicth we all got.

Thanks for sharing such an interesting post, I had no idea that animals could be so romantic.
Unfortunately, it might not be liked by feminists, since it clearly shows that males work hard for their families and females just watch and criticize.
Jokes asides, let's hope men will never stop to try to make their ladies happy :)

Of course, we are all animals and we all can experience such an interesting emotion as love. Of course we show our sympathy slightly differently then other animals, but it is sometimes interesting to watch how other spices show out their love. Really interesting article, thank you for it.

I found the presented examples very interesting yet not surprising at all. People tend to forget that we are animals ourselves and think that we are somehow better than other species, but these are all subjective opinions because there is no unbiased ranking system. Probably the most objective one would be the time the species stick to surviving on our planet in a unchanging way. If that's the case, then horseshoe crabs would be the most probable winners with a long lasting history of 450 million years, something that our own species in all likelihood will never achieve.

I find the idea of speciesism truly sickening, still I understand that this way of thinking is just another manifestation of us being animals. There are just to many examples of identical activities we share with other species. For example a subspecies of common chimpanzee use spears while hunting and perform a ceremonial dance after crossing waterfalls. Termite mounds can stand and still be inhabited for as long as 2200 years, which is pretty impressive, considering there might not have been a single hut in an area which constitutes Warsaw that long ago. Weirdly there are cases of zoophilia as well, where a bonobo female was caught masturbating to pornographic magazine. To summarize, of course we are different but it doesn't mean that we are better.

Interesting video related to the issue of speciesism:

I've heard about the last bird and even watched a few documentaries. I like watching documentaries about animals' "romantic" behaviour. Dancing, showing affection towards potential partner varie from specie to specie but is always spectacular.

It's great article. The animals also have feelings and it is funny :) I have often seen male fights on females. From this article the bird was most interested in me.

Thanks for this interesting post. Sometimes animals are more romantic than some people. >)

Great world we are leaving in. Imagine for a moment the world without all varieties and without anything special like this. It is exactly those details make it interesting place to be. I think humans far more luckier in a seance that there is many ways you can concur female' heart is and you don't have to master some ritual instead you can create your own.
When you are sad and have that depressive thoughts about your life and world around you it's a great idea to take a close look at such things like these because we can found a great kindness in such small creatures. Well... they are doing this because they have to (instinct etc.) yeah I know, but sometimes it is better for us to just look at things around us in more... poetic way :)

Interesting article. There sure are many distinct behaviours in animal kingdom. Mother evolution works in most effective ways so all life can prevail and develop further and further. Penguins for example, they come in pairs but on the other hand swans can be gay which would be contrary to the main goal of all life, to pass on life. I wonder how it will look like in 1000 yeras, if at all.

In my childhood I really enjoyed watching documentaries about animals. The animals have always been in my life. Especially dogs, but also hamsters, bunnnies and fish. Pets can make our home a better place. It is very interesting how males try to win their partners. Their behaviour is similar to human behaviour.
In my opinion there is nothing strange about it. The most interesting part for me was that about Gray Tern. It is so cute that male give dream female a gift - fresh fish! The funniest part was that when you said *the way to a female’s heart is through her stomach* it is similar behavior to humans. Sometimes people really are like animals... Or maybe the animals are like humans?! For me your article is very interesting. Congratulations interesting article. Great job!

Fair point my friend, not sure if there is a romance in primal instincts but it helps to look at it "in more poetic way". A little enrichment, refinement to the point of view in a world of a complicated but strictly mechanic workings is gladly received.

The article shows that animals aren't different from us people. They have many different way of courtships, but we also have our. I really liked the ways of bringing food to females. Animal can show what he is capable of and female can check if male can make her safe.

Not a big fan of animals or different kind of insects but this article made me excited. I'm pretty sure that in the previous centuries there were more interesting processes made by animals, but suddenly, we could not be a part of it. I was fascinated with their courtship, especially with the Gray Tern birds. Always i was interested in what they have in mind when they are doing things like flying high, drawing circles and making the female pay attention. It is so mysterious for me. But they are not so far from us, so many habits in common.

It's sad but true. I have a hope that it's a rare thing. However, we can see that people from different spheres have a problem to spend time together and have a good time. Maybe that's it.

Woow, that's awesome! Yes, i think that i'll be satisfied when someome will bring me food ;P

Well said. Animals are primitive and therefore they do not pretend like humans. It is beautiful and worth paying attention to it.

Interesting point of view. Something that seems unique to humans turns out to be part of a natural and even primitive behavior.

Oh, what a sweetness! I am so in love with animals and wild life, I used to watch many documentaries. One of my favorites was the Meerkat Manor, documentary series about the meerkat family, who was tracked and filmed. The life of the animal species reminds human life much more then we expect, and sometimes we can find the examples, that could even teach us something. Like in this nice article. Of course, we can say, that it is only about reproductivity, no romance, just a biological instincts and goals. But those goals could be achieved in a much more beautiful way, than it is done by humans. I still think, that nature could be a great inspiration for us in many senses.
Those who care to look into beautiness of animal world will find such gems and be amazed, unfortunately most of us are ignorant about what it hides.
Great example would be Peacock spiders which through dance and colorful abdomen try to impress female counterparts to mate with them. If we were more open on exploring what's foreign for us , in looking under what on the outside we could find that animal world in many ways surpass our technological advancement not in sheer technology but in harmony which we lack as individual pack of career starving humans.

Quite funny article, during reading I was imagining these apartments...I think that we don't have to seek examples of truly love so far. It's another example, but cats in the farm of my family usually bring mice's corpses to home as tokens of appreciation. Birds, fish and other animals are trying to conquer female ones on a innovative, unique way that people seems poor in comparison to them. We need millions to buy apartment, boat, diamond, but just some small personal, handmade gift wouldn't be enough?

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
