Week 7 [21.11-27.11] Electric cars- the fun way

Everyone sees electric cars and motorcycles as a “green”, boring way of commuting without juicy sound of V8 engine and whistle of speeding turbine. Let’s take a look at sporty, “economic” vehicles from the other side.

We can say that actual “era” of electric cars was started by Tesla’s Roadster- the first well known and successful electric car on the market, which was a breakthrough - over 100 000 electric cars are sold across the world. Of course, it is not a huge number compared to classic cars, but 5 years ago it was 0. It is something we should think about.

So where is that fun? Acceleration. The thing, which gives the most pleasure to any car driver in the world. Technicalities first.

The way how car accelerates is not only defined by horsepower but also by torque, power distribution, weight, and of course- drive type. Torque defines when an engine has the highest force, and finally- together with it- when a car accelerates in the most effective way. A typical combustion engine has the maximum torque available only in a short range of engine’s RPM. Depending on an engine type- petrol, or diesel, the RPM range in which car can use maximum torque is accessible at lower or higher RPM value. Generally, diesel engines get their max torque earlier than petrol ones- giving the user the feeling of being pushed into the seat. What about electric cars? How is power distributed in the electric engine?

Take a look at the chart:

Source: http://i.imgur.com/X7RVCdV.png

On the example of Tesla Model S you can see that maximum torque is available from 0 RPM. It can be hard to see on a chart why having max torque available from 0 RPM is so fun. So take a look also at these videos, which are self-explanatory:

That’s it! Electric cars with a properly powered motor and batteries are insanely fast and fun to drive! 4 wheel power adjusted using specialized algorithms resulted in great acceleration. No power is wasted burning tyres. Of course, the fun driving a car is not only defined by acceleration or speed. What do you think about electric, fast cars? Would you buy it if they were cheaper? Have you ever driven an electric car?

I think that electric fast cars are a great option for those, who want to be eco-friendly and fast as well.
Personally I haven't tried any electric car and I don't think that it's something special what I have to try sometime.
In my life I have heard a lot of bad opinions about electric cars and that's why I would rather not consider buying one in my life. The only advantage of it is fact that they are eco, nothing else. Maybe it'll change someday.

What bad opinions do you mean? Battery life? ;)

In my opinion electric cars are unsexual. I wrote about them before on similar presentation. For me sound of engine is very important. If I had to choose between Tesla and Ferrari, choice is easy. I don't mind hybrids. For example new Porsche 918 is hybrid and has great parameters and has great sound. In the future I will have to buy electic car but I hope that the engine of the future is hydrogen engine.
kondrat said…
I fully understand your opinion. However I cant wait when electric cars become so cheap, that it will be more profitable to buy a 6sec city electric car instead of 10 sec 3 cylinder city car, which are produced today :)

I think that electric cars will replace combustion engine cars, it's inevitable and seems to be obvious. Yes, the sound is important because we got used to it, it's strange when cars make no noises - we should get used to it, who wouldn't want to walk along the silent road, only with the sound of tires?

I haven't driven an electric car, but I would buy one, I hope that Tesla will produce an affordable one:)

I fully understand your opinion. I would use electric car daily for sake of environment and so on... but (if only i would make enough money) I surely would bury some old V8 car in garage and let it roar on weekends.

I think that in few decades electric cars will replace fuel cars, but I am also sure that there will always be some maniacs who will keep them, just for fun of riding good old 5l engine. If I would be rich one day, I would be one of such maniacs.
It's definitely a future, and it will become a really viable choice once electric cars will become more affordable. In fact, our biggest problem nowadays is the fact that people prefer to buy old used cars rather than new ones, and it's known that older cards are less efficient and therefore potentially worse for the environment than new ones. I'm very positive about technology in this field, as well as eco energy in general, but at the same time I'm rather sceptical that electric cars won't be an option for average human anytime soon.

I think we have had a similar topic before, so I will repeat myself when I state that electric cars are not really for me. I appreciate the technology development and the astonishing results of the cars, but to me it is not as funny to drive such car as it is with a usual type where you can actually hear the engine.
On the other hand, I imagine that this is our future and probably in 15 years this will be a standard vehicle at home.
kondrat said…
Check out Model 3! 35k $ (or possibly 35 k euro) and it is yours :)
kondrat said…
Same here, but if we take a look at our governments proposal of car excise...
kondrat said…
Actually Tesla announced Model 3, which will be 35k$ (in europe 35k euro). It is standard price of new mid range car. So I hope it will become cheaper and cheaper during time :)
kondrat said…
In my opinion car producers should keep combustion engine versions of their cars, but because of completely different engineering behind electric and classic cars it won't be cost effective :(

Ads for electric vehicles often focus on the good environmental and social benefits they have, or even the terrific gas mileage you get compared to gas vehicles. But, there's one more important aspect: they're much nicer to drive. Electric motors reach their peak torque (or "turning force") from 0 rpm, meaning they have strong acceleration from a stop. They're also quiet, almost silent, and offer a smooth, vibration-free ride. This is the reason why I would go for it.
I have never driven an EV car. I have been driving a hybrid car for a few times. It was very nice experience.
It's just a matter of time when electric cars will fully overtake market. Petrol sources are going to run out in 50 years. Electric cars are the future. I would like to drive electric car on daily basis but they are too expensive at the moment.

I have drivven an electric car and it was very pleasant expierience. Electric cars are the future, no doubts. Nice to see that someone understands their advanatges, especially torque-rpm characteristics. Electric engines are efficient, cheap, durable, light, small. The only problem is direct storage of electrical energy. That can hopefuly be fixed soon by graphene hyper-capacitors. I love fast cars and big engines but it's completly not a problem for me if we change our gasoline fast to cars to even faster electric cars.
Unknown said…
You took my topic for presentations haha :D.
I had the pleasure of driving Tesla as a passenger.
It's an amazing feeling when you feel like the car accelerates but sound can't be heard and only the noise. However I prefer V8 engines :)
kondrat said…
That was the point :)
kondrat said…
Tesla Model 3 is going to be 35k$ in 2018, so they are going to be almost as cheap as petrol cars :)
kondrat said…
Don't forget about reduced maintaince- no oil changes, no filters, spark plugs etc.. :)
kondrat said…
I've heard that there is a sound similar to electric silent squeak :)
That's exactly what I think about electric cars. It's great for daily use, but for the sake of driving pleasure while cruising the countryside I would definitely buy myself a proper V8 roadster. It simply delivers different kind of emotions/feelings when compared with the electric car.
Moode said…
thank you for bringing the topic. Having electric cars will be such a great thing. Imagine that!

A few days ago I spoke to a friend who drives a hybrid car and she said that it is such a great thing not be have to go to the petrol station so often as she had to with a regular car. She also said that having the electric engine does not affect the power and speed of the car ;) which is good news for those of us who likes to drive on highways.

It is also nice to see that more and more buses and taxies exchange the cars to hybrid.

I am a huge car enthusiast, so I was shocked when I saw for the very first time youtube videos, where tesla was winning head-to-head drag races with ferraris or lamborghinis.
Electric cars are future, we have to agree on this. I think, that in 20-30 years there will be more electric cars on street than petrol ones. However, I love the proper sound of V6 or V8, so I hope that these types of cars won't be extinct.
Unknown said…
maybe you say about the sound of the engine that reproduce the speakers? :)

I heard that Tesla is bringing a new model - 100D, which be even faster. They say, that it'll get from 0 to 96km/h in 2,4 seconds. That's faster than Bugatti Veyron, one of the most expensive supercars in the world!

I would really like to try an electric car, but right now they are way too expensive, and there are only a few charging stations in Poland, so going on holidays in such car may be a problem. Moreover, you don't get any special treatment for owning an electric car in Poland. For example, in Norway electric cars get large discounts in taxes and they can park for free and use bus lines. That's why Tesla got so popular in Norway.
I'm a fan of Tesla cars. They look nice, bit futuristic but not ridiculous. They are also quiet which contributes to them being environmentally friendly. Although I almost got ran over by one in an alley when I was crossing the street because other parked cars blocked out the view and I couldn't hear the upcoming car.
kondrat said…
They won't but there will be a special tax for them ;D
kondrat said…
Polish government is ignoring new technologies, sadly.

You were supposed to look around ;)

I love these cars. Just wished they would look a bit more futuristic like i8 or cool like porsche cars. The resemblance with plain looking older Ford Mondeo is too big for me.
Just take a look:

My favourite Tesla model is Speedster. EV without a roof sounds like a great way to enjoy some countryside tour.

I never drove an electric car, but I see that it would be a great car for me! I love fast driving (of course not in the city, just on motorway), so these videos made me really happy. I think electric cars are our future, but what about charging batteries? Tesla proposed the solution which is very fast exchange batteries (only 90 sec!), but it costs about 60-80$ what is equivalent to 40-50 litres of petrol. It means that one exchange of batteries allows us to drive 400 km where the petrol about two times more.
Tesla models are hard to find in Poland because they're purely electric cars. And that is and still will be a problem in our country - we have to wait few year to popularize hybrid cars more and then maybe we will be ready for pure electric cars.
Few months ago I had a pleasure to drive BMW i8 - it's a sport hybrid car but even on plain electric engine from 0-60 it's just pure acceleration ecstasy. This car is awesome and I know how people on the movie felt in Tesla - it's just pushing you so hard to the seat ... and you have to love it and want more :)

Someone wrote about electric cars being unsexual.. - checkout this model please:

If I’d have to choose which car to buy I’d definitely go with Tesla. The first factor is ecology. As we all know electro cars are much more eco-friendly than normal types of cars. Also, the drawing security system is much more secure in Tesla. You all heard of those situations when Tesla saved a life of drivers during an accident.
Adam Nowak said…
There is something charming about roar of a combustion engine. I will be a little sad when electric cars take the place of 'normal' cars, but it is a mandatory replacement. Electric cars are way better. They are faster, more eco-friendly and safer.
Hey, you forget mention about the thousands of systems that will support us in driving and up to date to process everything that is happening around us. Of course we like fast and beautiful cars but can we can not forget about our safety. I plan to buy an electric car over the 15 years, perhaps my favourite card company (Mercedes). Maybe they can create up to that time the cheaper car with will be available to for more people.
I would definitely buy an electric car if it was cheaper and there were more charging points in Warsaw.
It is more ecological way than standard cars.
It would be great to have a ride in Tesla! :D
I don't plan on buying any cars in the nearest future, but that also makes me think that maybe, if everything with the technology goes well and stuff, my first car could possibly be an electric one. I'm not much of a car nerd, for me a car is just a vehicle which lets you travel from point A to B, so an electric one wouldn't make that much difference to me and it is always better not to release any kind of harmful elements into the atmosphere, if it can be avoided.

I don't get one thing in those arguments about electric cars not "sounding right" and not being fun. I once watched "Pimp My Ride" and they attached some kind of doodad to an old car that made it SOUND like a V8 monster. I mean... that was like 2004, the technology is there if you insist on having your bicycle sound like a Harley Davidson. As for the tesla car that accelerates like a rollercoaster, sure, why not!

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
