Week 11 [13.01-19.01.20] Positive affection of video games

You might recognize people who play games as a freaky nerd who wear glasses and have a lot of pimples on their face, but that’s wrong thinking. In fact, playing games may positively impact your health (ignoring the fact that it may harm your vision if you spend too much time in front of PC or mobile phone). Here are some benefits that I find interesting about playing video games:
1. Video games improve your mood

Every player knows the feeling when you finally figured out how to beat that tough boss or a level. It’s the feeling of victory. People always want to feel victory after achieving some goal in life (or a video game in this case). So if you want to find a way to feel the accomplishment, have a way to relax after hard day at work and just overall brighten your mood – start playing video games!
2. Video games train your brain

Certain logic games such as Sudoku or even Bingo may have a positive impact on your memory and problem solving just by simply playing for a few minutes daily. You don’t need to start playing some hardcore -time-consuming-MMORPGs games to be relaxed in your free time. Even when you travel by bus, you may just turn on your phone and solve a Sudoku or two!
3. Video games build great communities

Some games allow us to chat with different people in-game. That means you can meet new friends online and have fun with them together by playing your favorite game. Not only that – he may also help you defeat difficult boss that you struggle with. Even besides games, people use forums such as Reddit to share information about the game or just looking for new friends to play their favorite game with.
Questions:
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?
3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

1. I was a lucky kid who had a computer from toddler age. I think I started playing games when I was 3 or 4 years old. And I still do.

2. When I was at school I was playing competitive games like CS or Dota. And I must say they induce many negative emotions and can even make you stress for a bit. I of course stopped playing them years ago and now play only games that bring me only positive emotions. Right now I can play some Battlefront 2(which became an awesome game btw). It brings me nostalgic motives about childhood and classic Battlefront 2. And yes, I feel relaxed after playing it.

3. Video games in my opinion are completely harmless and are a good form of spending a few hours after a hard day. Although it’s not good if you day begins and ends with games. But that’s not a games problem, procrastination is bad in any form.
I like playing games. It's a cool feeling to play the game and stop thinking about everyday life. Strategy games are my favorite.

Games can be a great relax. I prefer to play on the phone or computer and sometimes I watch movies on youtube.

Many ideas have already appeared in the article. In my opinion, games allow us to be ourselves, especially chat in a game when it is a multiplayer game. After all, be careful not to go too deep into the world of games.

I've been playing different video games quite a lot. I mostly play on computer rather than consoles or mobiles.
It depends on the kind of video game i am playing. If it is competetive online game, it is hard to be good at it when you are tired after work. Some games require a lot of thinking which isn't great type of game to choose after work. On the other hand i play some relaxing games and indeed I play them after work.
There are some games that help treat PTSD or phobias.
Another thing i can think of is learning language. It is easier to learn english when you play english based game with other people writing and talking in english.
1. Currently, I have no opportunity, time and desire to play video games. I used to like it a lot, I started playing around the age of 6, the last time I only played gta5 around 2014. Since then, I don't enjoy playing like I was when I was younger.
2. As I mentioned earlier, I haven't played for a long time. Sometimes, if I'm interested in a title and start playing, after half an hour I come to the conclusion that it's not what I expected.
3. I think they let you get away from everyday life. After you finish playing, you can look at the problems in a different way. Besides, it's a great way to spend time with colleagues online
1. i 2. Yes, I do play computer games. It treats it as a form of relaxation, a momentary release of bad emotions, especially when I can't go outside. When I was younger I spent much more time playing games. I find it a bit wasted time, I could learn more then.

3. I think that games can have a positive impact. First of all, they develop imagination, it is much easier for us to invent new things. In some ways, they teach the consequences, but they can also have educational functions. For example, games based on historical events. One game will teach you more than a school textbook.
1. I play from time to time. When I was a kid, it was a great way to spend my free time. Now it's hard to find enough time to enjoy the game, but I must admit that there are games that are hard to get away from.

2. It all depends on what day it was. Surely it's a form of entertainment and it's distressing. But if we play the game for a long time, it can make us into zombies, disconnected from reality.

3. I think that playing games can have a positive impact, but it often happens that people disconnect away from reality. There are many games that can teach us a lot of interesting things and can show the world from different perspective.
1. I still play games but not as often as before. I simply don't have enough time. However, I'm an aspiring game designer so I'm still close to the gaming world.

2. Not necessarily. After a hard day at work or school, I'm too tired to play complicated games so I prefer dull entertainment such as watching a movie or tv series. Moreover, I usually have some work to do later so I'm not up to train my brain, rather let it loose ;) but when Friday comes I let myself play as much as I want.

3. My favourite game genre is strategy games. I constantly need to manage my troops, feed them and evolve the city. Those exercises not only keep my brain sharp but also help me strategise my activities. I often find myself managing my tasks, putting them in the most optimal order I can think of. If you have any troubles with those things I suggest you try my method! It's educative and fun at the same time and you can fail as many times as you want without serious consequences while improving your skills.
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
Yes, I used to play games. Unfortunately, I didn't find myself in it. I've never played any of the games really seriously, I just don't feel it.

2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?
If I actually start playing a game, it's usually because of curiosity or a desire to relax. I never felt this state after the game ended. It was more like a pause in my mood.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
If playing games can be a discharge of emotion for someone, we already have the first advantage. This is definitely better than drinking or other harmful things you can do.
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?

Of course I play computer games although I don't have as much time for them as I used to. Not so long time ago I even assembled a very powerful PC to get the full experience from them. I can confirm all the advantages given above.

2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?

Yes, games let me get rid of bad emotions, relax and get in a good mood. Often the games themselves trigger a lot of emotions both positive and negative, but you can always stop playing or choose another game to suit your current mood.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

I think one of the important advantages is the ability to learn the language. Probably many of us know our first words and phrases in English from games.
You got too far with communities statement. There are far to many toxic people to create such things. I also play video games and I like it very much. It helps me rest and just do something fun on my own. I don't think they had much negative impact on me. Everything should be done in moderation of course.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
Literally my whole life. Games defined me as myself, and they are my profession now.
2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?
My day at work is actually making games myself :) However, I seem o never get tired of them. So yeah, after day of making games, I enjoy the most playing some other games.
3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
There are tons of studies and research about how games impact people, both positively and negatively. A lot of studies on how detect and defeat game addiction, which is actually a severe problem, although often mistaken with regular preference of time spending and relaxing, It is ok if you find five hours of TV series relaxing. It is equally ok if you find five hours of playing games relaxing. There is a thin edge between simple rejuvenating activity and when this activity turns into harm. What I am trying to say is that not all who play games are in fact addicts, contrary of what most people have pictured in mind.
It's pretty nice that you told us about how you felt about going competetive with this. I heard a lot about it being tough emotionally and mentally. I'm glad that you still play just to have fun with games
Yes, it's definetly a nice feeling to have your favorite game that you can just play, relax and forget about what happened in that day. Chatting with others in-game is definetly important, we're the one that builds the community around it, not developers.
It's true about learning language. When i was in elementary school, I learned english more from video games rather than during english lessons. With competetive games it is truly difficult just to relax, because you play to improve your ranking, not to just sit and relax. I'm glad that you mentioned games that help with phobias, because it's always a tough issue.
Yes, it is a great way to spend time with your friends, especially when you all have difficulties finding time to spend together in "real life". It's still nice that despite the fact you stopped playing games years ago, you still try out new games that come out these days just to check them out.
It is true, games can sometimes teach us a lot of thing in interactive ways, sometimes better than teachers at school. About the consequences: yes, they teach us to analyse situations we're in, and the consequence of choosing wrong is for the most of the games different ending. But still we can just play it again (not like "real life")
There are a lot of games that are hard to get away from. The only reason I stopped playing World of Warcraft were my friends who stopped playing, I didn't want to be alone playing it. "Disconnectiong from reality" is an issue, games can be addicting, simmilar to drugs or alcohol.
Strategy games are the most common type that may help you improve. Decision making, organizing and sometimes multitasking are key in those games, so you are constantly training those skills that help you organize your "real life". Hope your game fesigning aspiration will be fruitful.
1. I love video games and I used to play a lot in the past. Now, however, I am growing a bit tired of it or just a bit disappointed with the majority of new games that are just too lazy where big video game companies just make sequel after sequel or yet another remake, so I still play from time to time but usually they are older games or those rare interesting titles still finding their way to the market.
2. I wish it was but usually I am too tired and don’t have time after a workday so Friday evening is a magical time of the week – now more than ever.
3. Video games tell us great stories or let us create our own ones, they let us live numerous various lives in a matter of days, and they can be a safe haven for those who need some time-out from the real world.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
Yes, I have been playing video games since I was a little. I enjoy playing and I find it very relaxing.
2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?
Yes, this is one of the ways that I enjoy after day at work.
3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
I think a lot of games helped me to quick slove a lot of problems, like qucik decision making etc.
It's nice to hear that you at least tried to have some fun playing video games. A lot of the people reject playing video games as a way to relax because it's too nerdy for them or anything. It is a good way to discharge your emotion, but it may still be addicting just like drinking you mentioned
Having a good setup for games is always a great feeling. It's good for you that you have your favorite games or types of video games to suit your mood for the day and it's nice that you see the the boundary of "when to stop playing game". I can agree with the fact that one of my first phrases in english came from video game
Yes, there are a lot of toxic people, this is unavoidable not only in the video game world. But at the end, it's helpful and polite people that will stick to the community to save it rather than toxic attutide ones. It's nice that for you it's a way of having some fun in your own quiet place, and i totally agree with playing in moderation.
It's cool that you started (propably when you were a kid) playing video games and now you took it as your profession. Also, it's awesome that you still play them and you don't feel sick because of thinking about video games 24/7, thinking about them as a job and a way of relaxation on the other hand. You're absolutely right about video game addiction. The boundary is pretty think but i think that if you get to the point that you choose to play video games rather than doing thing you have to do in "real life", then it starts to be a problem.
I'm a retro gamer myself. Usually when new video game comes out, I don't care about it. I only care when my friends want to try it out to play with them. Otherwise, I prefer just launch an old console emulator and play games from 1980's or 90's. I'm glad that you find it as a way to "escape life" to forget about the problems and just to relax
Decision making is one of our most important skills, so I'm glad that you manage to improve it while relaxing
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?

Of course I do. I used to be a big gamer when I was a child. After that I stopped regularly playing throughout my first years of college, because this had nothing to do for me with the fun had while playing as a child. Lately I picked it up once again this year and I actually seem to enjoy it as much as I did when I was a child.

2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?

One of the ways at least but probably that might be the best of them, which doesn’t mean leaving home. Late night gaming at least once a week is that thing for me that I wait for during the week. A small pleasure I would say.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

There are so many different types of games that in my opinion it is impossible to name any universal advantages of playing video games. Every type has it’s own bad and good sides. Some are said to cause aggression (which is not accurate if you ask me) and some are said to make people dumber. The same thing happens when it comes to positive aspects – some develop creativity and some might teach you, for example, history. They help learn English too.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?

I like to play some good video games . I used to play really often because I enjoyed it a lot. Now, unfortunately, I don't have enough free time to continue this hobby.

2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?

Yes, playing games helps me refresh my mind and de-stress. After a hard day at work, I can't imagine an evening without a moment of relaxation while playing one of my favorite games.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

Playing games can become a work today. There are many professional players who earn a lot of money from it. There are also streamers who, thanks to their fans and community, can live from what they love to do the most, i.e. play games.
Computer games were an indispensable part of my childhood. I play now, too, but as I have more responsibilities and more interesting things to do, I play less. Nowadays, games allow me to relax, chat with friends, laugh with them and even sometimes forget about problems. In my opinion, games, for example, are a much better form of entertainment than watching TV, because in games you have to constantly make decisions that affect your gameplay, and by watching TV we only absorb information. Computer games have allowed me to get to know English better because most games are in English and to understand something you just have to learn it. Sometimes in MMORPGs you also learn different social behaviors.
1. Of course, I play video games. I am a big fan of the Battefield and Forza series.
2. Yes, very often it is my relaxation after a hard day at work. However, I think we shouldn't spend too much time in the virtual world.
3. Some games, for example The Witcher, give the player the opportunity to make decisions that affect the hero's further fate. I believe that this can teach us to make the right decisions. I also think that when it comes to younger people, video games should be adjusted to the player's age because currently video games largely show violence, which can have a negative impact on children.

1.I've always played computer games. Despite the small amount of free time I still sometimes do. Of course I agree with your advantages of this.
2.Yes, after a hard day at work or at the university, I like to play and relax. Some prefer to sit in front of the TV, others prefer walking outside, and others prefer computer games.
3.I think that games can develop people. By learning about other worlds, other people in them, solving various problems, we learn to look from different points of view.
1. Yes, I think I can call myself a gamer, even though right now I don’t play half as much as I used to when I was younger. But every now and then when I feel the need to lay back for a moment I play various video games.

2. Yes, it certainly helps me to relax and ease any anxiety that built up during the day.

3. In general I agree with the article, I have heard of numerous cases where gaming was proven to be contributing to development of skills such as logical-thinking or special awareness and many others. I also find gaming a particular form of socialization, thanks to which many truly interesting communities emerge.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?

I am not a huge gamer but I enjoy playing from time to time, especially motorsport games. I used to play more as a child but right now it doesn’t excite me that much as it did in the past.

2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?

It depends – sometimes I like to turn on the console but lately I’d rather sit and watch a tv series or read a book.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

Well, in my opinion games allow us to experience things that we would not do in real life but there is a thin line between the two – some of us might have a more laidback approach to that and others might really enjoy it and take it to the real world but my idea is that the best games are those which help with gathering group of friends and enjoy one another while playing and having a little bit of healthy competition.

1. I'm not a gamer, to be honest I'm not "talented" enough to do so. I do enjoy playing from time to time but I truly hate multiplayers - being seen by others and not being good at something, terrifies me a lot.

2. I play like, 3 times per year, so no, it's not my relax method. I prefer more creative and active ways.

3. For some people it's a hobby and whatever makes us happy has positive impact. It also can be an income source and connecting hobby with work is such wonderful idea. Moreover you can "meet" a lot of new people all around the world and some of them can literally change your life for better.
1. I never liked video games. I don't think they're real enough.
2. My way to relax is to go to the garage and bury in the car.
3. Properly planned game will certainly be able to develop and teach new things.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
Yes, I play video games often. And in the past, too. I started playing video games when I was 5-6 years old (I don't remember exactly).
2. Is it your way to relax after a hard day at work?
Yes, this is usually the main reason why I turn on games. But it seems to me not so much fatigue after which you want to rest, how the desire of the brain to spend time fun, because of which it finds for itself reasons to go into the game and play a little. So I can't even say that my answer "yes" is unambiguous.
3. Do you have your own idea of how video games may have a positive impact on us?
Positive? Unlikely. Sometimes help you spend time. But this happens not often.

2. Yes, exactly. It is my way to relax after a hard day in work or in University. In addition, sometimes it happens that I have a free evening and you have to somehow fill up my free time.
3. First of all, video games help us learn English and practice eye-hand coordination. Personally, thanks to the Tibia game I learned English at a communicative level.

Of course, I sometimes play video games, it’s very rare lately, but when there’s a free hour or two and nothing to do, I can play. Not so long ago, I accidentally stumbled upon one game that I played as a child, imperial Glory. I installed it, played, remembered my childhood, and then I removed it.

Of course not, since I generally rarely play, but sometimes I can play the world of tanks and it’s impossible to play it without nerves, screaming and scolding, because the team always has a lot of noobs xD

I don’t know, I’m not one of those who consider video games to be evil, it all depends on how much to play it, but I also don’t see anything particularly good about them.
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
Currently, I don't play video games very much. When I was a little girl I often played video games with my cousins when I went to my grandmother.

2. Is it your way to relax after a hard day at work?
This is definitely not my way to relax after work. I always have so much on my mind. Rather, I spend time with my boyfriend and family after work.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
When video can develop our imagination and improve our response time.
1. I play video games in my free time, in free time I mean I finished all my responsibilities and I treat playing games same as watching TV 20 years ago. Anserwing your question. Yes, I do!

2. It's one of many ways to relax for me. It depend which kind of relax I need. Sometimes I prefer to go to the gym and workout another time is playing video games. I prefer workout because I feel much better next day after

3. I watch some curious video on YouTube about positive impact on our body. It's stunning how many ways it can help people to develop our brain! Here is the link to the short movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdWJprCKv3k (Unlucky it's only in polish)

1) Not at all in the last years. But I used to play a lot when I was younger.
2)It used to be, but it took way to much of my time and used it in a very inefficient way. For me, at least, there are much better and less harmful ways to relax.
3) Generally speaking, it could be a very good way to relax and socialize, but if you really want to optimize your time usage, I'm afraid, in most cases, gaming would be one of the first things you would have to cut off from your life and seek some other less time demanding ways to deal with this problem. If you are not short on time though, it could be a really good and even somewhat useful experience.

I don’t play as much nowadays as I used to when I was 13 to 17 y.o. :) I love playing puzzle solving games on my phone when I have some free time or when I’m on my way to work for example. As for PC games I prefer storytelling ones, like Life is Strange, The Stanley Parable or (careful, pretty old titles are coming, haha) Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit.
Not really, for relaxing I prefer to watch some easy movie, to cook something or to watch YouTube videos - low intellectual activities :) I think puzzle solving games helps me to wake up my brain in the morning and to stay concentrated throughout the day.
Well, I agree with the ones you mentioned, especially the community-related one. It’s not a secret that there are a lot of not nice people in the internet and especially in online games, but I actually met some of my really good friends in the game or because of the game and we’re still staying in touch after a quite a long time (6-7 years). So I think playing online games is a great way to meet some new people and make friends, sometimes from far far away from you!

1. I like playing games a lot. In the past I was a little nerd, when I finish the school I came back home and play it in my free time. Now, I dont have enough time to play a lot, but in the free evening I love to play with my friends, there is not only a game, but a funny conversation between us.

2. Not really, I prefer to relax with book or tv series. It is more like a good time killer. I like RPG, they demands some focus so I am not quite relaxed.

3. First of all, we can learn language. There are a lot of games only in english so we are listening, teaching new words, or reading in foreign language. Secondly, we can make a new friends, meet interesting people, maybe a love. And last but not least, we are able to develop our minds. There are strategic games, which requires an advanced tactics which can develop our way of thinking.
1. Yes i still do sometimes but i think not as much as most people my age. I also don't go with trends and find most of popular games unappealing and not interesting.

2. Sometimes yes. But I prefer other activities to chill myself. Even if i enjoy playing particular game when i play it more then hour or few i find myself even more tired (probably not because of a game but sitting in one position stearing at monitor have something to do with it)

3. Unfortunately I know much more unpleasant and bad aftermaths than good ones. But I believe there is so many different games you can chose that it depends on you what impact it has on you. It can be just de-stressing, or very creative as well. It's all in your hands and mind.

That's actually true. From time to time I play my favourite titles, but actually for the most of my free time I spend it with my friends.

3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
I think the fact that makes you feel better is the most obvious and important ones. I don't believe in statements that it makes you smarter, but at the same time I see more advantages than disadvantages.

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
I played the shooters when I was yonger and I enjoyed this a lot. The main things I liked were the competition and the team work. It is a lot of fun to play something with your friends or against your friends. Just the good way to spend free time after classes.
2. Is it your way to relax after hard day at work?
Now deffinately no. When I have the free time I do not want to thing how to solve something in the game and I am always angree when the teenagers are killing me in the game.
3. Do you have your own idea on how video games may positively impact on us?
The video games are perfect for Christmass time. That is all.
1. Yes, it is my favourite way of spending my free time.
2. Yes, however after sitting for 8 hours in front of a computer, it might not be the best for my health.
3. I always find myself relaxed after playing computer games, so yes.
Yeah,I have been playing video games since i was at a young age, 16 years old. But unfortunately I don't play any because of work and study. I have different hobby, it is writing songs and making music so, I found that pretty useful.

I think this is not the best way to relax. Sometimes it can effect negatively because it depends on game and how stressful you will be while playing it. Actually, it was approved in some scientific article that watching movie, playing game, listening music not relaxing you at all but on the contrary it affects in bad way.

Mostly, it depends on game itself. If you play a game whose goal is only killing it will not give anything positive. But if you play scientific games that are aimed to learning through entertainment, then maybe something good will come of it. The only positive impact that you can gain it is learning language and maybe think in different way.
I am true gamer. I played much more in the past, because in middle and high school I had much more time for playing. But still even now days with work and university staff to do I find few hours in the week to just chill out in front of the computer and play. Answer to your second question is definitely yes. I find video games really good way to relax after had day and let your brain reset a little bit. While playing games we can for a moment at least focus on something that is fun for us and forget about everyday problems. Well in my case I can show a lot of examples where playing on computer improved my life. For starters I learned a lot of English language while playing online games. I see big improvement in my perception and reflex after playing games as well as strategical thinking and solving logical problems. In fact video games were the reason why I started to be interested in computers and why I choose IT as my university field of study.
1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?

Yes, I like playing video games. In the past I used to play a lot of different video games, I spent plenty of hours in DotA 2 video games. Unfortunately, now I have less time and cannot play as many games as I used to but still I am trying to play some new games from time to time.

2. Is it your way to relax after a hard day at work?

Not always, but sometimes after a hard day, when you are very exhausted and need some relax without too many thinking activities it can help a lot. On the other hand, it is a little bit strange, that after 8 hours of work using a computer, return home and sit in front of computer 8 more hours.

3. Do you have your idea on how video games may positively impact on us?

They help me to clear my mind, after playing some time I feel refreshed and relaxed and they simply bring me the feeling of joy, which is great I think :)

1. Do you find yourself playing video games? Or have you been playing in the past?
I have been playing video games in the past, my favorite game was "Spore". It's about evolution from unicellular to planet conqueror. Playing this game was so interesting and informative! I found out so many about how herbivorous survive and that they need to protect themselves, how predators should evolve to hunt, causes and effects of species symbiosis, basics of managing and economics. It was so interesting and there are so many ways to become a dominating race.

Now I like to watch videos about nature and many others.

I have read that games like "Counter Strike" develop orientation in space.
1. I’ve been playing video games since I was 6 years old (?). It always gave me so much fun and that’s why I’m doing it until now. Years of experience made me a really good player and I’m proud of it.

2. Every time I have trouble making some of the projects from school I get mad at myself. Video games help me to relax after this and forgot about the trouble. Sometimes I play with friends so we can talk and have fun together. For me this is the best way to run away from reality.

3. There are many positive things witch I have now because of video games. For example I joined Ninja witch is our University representation in one of the games. I met there a few nice friends and since then have a really good contact. I even found my girlfriend by joining Ninjas!
1. I had played video games I the past and I even took part in some competitions of video games. Once I remember with a team we had been creating one of them.
2. For some people, yes. This is the way to relax. But not for me. For me,this is an additional form of entertainment.
3. I think video games develop reaction well. They make you think strategically rather than irrationally
