VR technology has been developing for a very long time. Its origins date back to the early 1970s, when NASA began experimenting with head-mounted displays. They used them, among others, for various simulations and trainings.
It wasn't until the 1990s that this technology hit the entertainment sector. Sega Mega Drive with Vr headset and Nintendo Virtual Boy were released.
Over the years, this technology has developed rapidly, but the breakthrough was 2010 when the first Oculus Rift prototype was shown (made by 18(!) years old Palmer Luckey in his parents' garage), people loved it and supported the kickstarter campaign. Then Facebook bought Oculus company and is strongly developing its products. Other companies such as Google, HTC, Xiaomi or Sony have also released their googles.
In addition to computer games and digital entertainment, there are many other applications for VR. The most popular are:
- Architecture and urban design
- Digital marketing
- Education
- Military
- Healthcare
- art
More and more companies are beginning to see the potential in VR / AR applications and use them. According to the IDC survey, in 2020 total expenditure on AR/VR services is to reach 18.8 billion dollars, which is 78.5% more than last year. This forecast shows how much interest is currently in this area.
Another study by Goldman Sachs from 2016 shows business, enterprise and public sector applications will account for almost half.
Here is a short video showing how VR is used in 3 large companies and what are the benefits of it.
questions:
1. Is it a good idea to use VR in non-entertainment applications?
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?

Of course, i don't remember where i read it but Russian farmers are right now experimenting with especially designer VR headset for cows so they think they are in idyllic world and as for now it's working. These cows are giving more and better quality milk when put into the paradise.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I don't think so, VR won't ever witness any revolution as it came into the market way to slow, now everyone knows about it and they can only improve, they won't ever revolutionize it's own market.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
My friend is a 3D graphic designer and he asked me to test a game that he was creating models for. So my experience is playing an escape room game in fantasy - magical world. It was awesome and i would recommend it to anyone.
This is a great idea. It seems to me that the use of these technologies is not limited to those that you indicated in your article. It can be used absolutely everywhere. For example, I saw that one airline uses virtual reality glasses to simulate flights in training future pilots. I'm not talking about the benefits of virtual reality simulation in the space industry. Probably not a single activity is complete without it.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
Well, since the development of this direction was not entirely quick, but phased, we can say that every breakthrough idea in this area is a revolution. For example, we will witness the next step, and we will also perceive it as a kind of revolution. Most likely this is so, because there is no limit for improvement, and with every decade it will be more and more perfect.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
My experience or acquaintance with this is not so rich. I just watched a couple of clips with virtual reality glasses. They were not of the best quality, which is probably why I did not have vivid positive impressions. Hopefully still to come.
Yes, every technology can be used outside of games for training or saving lifes perhaps. Like google glass they were ment for normal, ordinary people while they become a powerful tool for surgeons in example.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
We can't be sure until the revolution ends I believe, though our times are really peculiar and most possible ones.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
With AR I mostly played Pokemon GO and use few tools for some memes. With VR however I played few games on PSVR I really love this technology and want to see it reach its full potential.
1.
Ahhh I've heard about it. I could mention this in the article.
Yeah - It was quite interesting experiment.
2.
Hmm maybe you are right about second question, but - everyone knows them and a lot of people think that this is still underdeveloped technology. Of course a lot of things can be corrected. I also think that a barrier factor for people is a price of such systems. Googles + Computer that is powerful enough can be quite expensive.
3. It sounds very interesting.
I can't come up with any idea why it couldn't be something good. VR and AR could be very helpful in many fields, like you mentioned in your presentation. Let's take a Microsoft's Holo Lens as an example. It could for example revolutionize the way architects and designers works. As a side note I would say that until it's not a mainstream it will be an entertainment even when used for work purposes :-)
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
Personally I don't see and feel this revolution yet, but it's certainly becoming more and more popular over time. It's popularity might suddenly explode in a near future.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I have a Google Cardboard which I bought out of curiosity. I used it a few times but I don't exactly know what to do with it. The other aspect is that I can't use it for too long because I feel dizzy. I've had a real VR headset on my head once and I must say it was really unique and interesting experience.
As for an AR, couple of years ago I had a game called Invisimals for PSP console. It was a little bit like Pokemons but you could fight with other players or computer with your creatures. It displayed them on a special 'tag' in a place where you put it. It was required to have an additional camera for your PSP to show all of it as AR.
2. Yes, technology is getting better and better and I think now is the time when VR is getting very popular.
3. I have Samsung Gear VR, but I use it occasionally, because I do not have enough time to play with it. I want to buy PlayStation VR glasses, but they are expensive and for now I do not want to pay that money for VR glasses.
Yes, it could be until it can do something that normal computer screen can not do, and so far I don't have any idea about this, for example in the video, we still can do it the same in computer with normal screen effectively, and VR bases on visual deception, which actually is hard to lie to our brains except for lying to our vision, but it can lie to both animals' brains and vision, so I guess we can use VR in animal for some business, I am sure when VR will become more popular, we will find out more ideas what it can do.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
Yes, I guess this case is similar to one that happened around 2008, when touch screen mobile phone started to be more and more popular.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I played some VR game in some VR playground, it was lots of fun, as for AR, I guess most of us have played a game called Pokemon, when I travelled to Japan last summer holiday, I saw 3 times around 200-400 people gathering around a little place to play Pokemon, even old people were playing there, it was crazy moments.
It seems to me that it is worth using VR glasses in applications other than entertainment. This is a fantastic technology that is applicable in many areas. They can be used e.g. when training future car drivers or pilots. I think they would also be great for dance training or future babysitters.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I think we are witnessing a VR revolution, but the emotions associated with VR have already subsided. Hardly anyone has VR today. I think it is developing too slowly.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I used to create VR applications for a car dealership. I created an application on AR, but only to see how to program it.
Why not, it could be useful with such vast features. Maybe in training pilots or driving classes.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
In some kind we are witnessing a vr revolution but understanding of it is smoothed out a bit.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I've never have this opportunity to have experience with vr or ar.
2. Yes, I think we are witnessing a VR revolution. VR is widely used now, and it has become available to almost everyone. Various well-known companies are directing their efforts to improve this technology and open new opportunities.
3. I didn't have much experience in VR or AR. But I think it's a great technology that will help us a lot in the future. I am very interested in watching its development, and I am sure that we are waiting for a lot of different discoveries related to BP.
2. I don't know. You mentioned many different applications of it, but I don't know if these are only theoretical possibilities or it's in common use by professionals from these fields. If yes, we can think about some revolution. In my opinion, we can think about the revolution if something is in common use and its prices are getting lower and lower, so many people can afford buying it.
3. I'm afraid I have never used it for a longer time, so I can't say anything interesting about it.
Yes, definitely.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
Pass this century we made a big steps in vr technology but we still have to make it better. We can speak about it as revolution in next few years i think.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I tried both and both are amazing technologies. AR is more usefull in every day life especially if we can start using it by having holograms on our glasses and VR is more fun to me but also great tool for learning and experiencing something.
Sure. If this technology is able to allow better design or visualization of certain ideas, we should apply and develop it as much as possible.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I think VR is a technology that will not appear in the mainstream for a long time. However, it is successively developed and more and more applications appear. Who knows, maybe when the devices become cheaper and less invasive (they won't cause nausea or other ailments), more and more people will be interested in this technology.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
Unfortunately, I haven't had much experience with this technology. I had the opportunity to spend only a few minutes with Playstation VR and as you know this is not the technology of the highest possibilities when it comes to VR.
2. I don't think this is a revolution, because it is still unavailable on a sensible tech level for most people.
3. I have gained some experience with VR games on games expo, but I didn't like it at all. Also, I am sometimes using the IKEA AR app to check if a piece of furniture fits in my room.
2. In my opinion it will not be a revolution because it will not find such wide application as it is told. Probably for the average recipient it will be another 3D TV. Nice toy but Nobody will jump in glasses around the room for entertainment for 100 hours. Classic e-entertainment has no future in this technology.
3. These are very cool tools. Several times I had the pleasure to use it.
S20108
I don't know about revolution but I've read about VR shopping experience and it sounded like WOW. Also it's quite popular. For me this is amazing even that I don't like shopping. I mean, it moved on to this segment, won't even mention military, medicine etc. Maybe after all we witnessing a vr revolution
I was playing in a VR game in one of the exhibition. It was fun, but after playing my eyes little hurt. This was the only one attempt. But maybe later I'll give it another shot.
Yes and it should be developed more. I'm waiting for a day in which we could use AR without any extra devices.
2.
I wouldn't call it revolution but it is good start and I hope it will succeed.
3.
Sadly, I haven't got a chance to try it out yet. Only heard some opinions.
It might be a good idea and it’s easy to find different areas where such devices could be found useful. It would be nice for training pilots and drivers as well as other skills that are expensive to teach in a real environment. VR also seems perfect solution to show apartments and cars to potential clients, as they could simply look around and see it fits their need - therefore finding the perfect flat could become less time consuming.
2.
No, I wouldn't agree with that. I think that VR industry is not growing as fast, as people expected and it is difficult to say why. We could compare this technology with 3D, which some years ago was popular in cinemas and TVs and now I can’t find a brand which uses this technology in their products. Maybe it is related to physical characteristics, as I heard that some people feel dizzy when using such devices.
3.
To be honest, I do not have any experience with such devices. I have never had VR goggles and I don’t plan to buy it, but I would say that it could be a great experience to use VR for playing in car racing games like Forza Motorsport.
It seems to me that this is a good idea and it can bring a lot of benefit. Probably a lot of technologies that are used in the entertainment can be beneficial if we come up with how to expand their scope.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I don’t know, it can hardly be called a revolution. This technology has quickly gained popularity quite recently, but while it's mainly used in the entertainment, it won’t be able to make a huge leap.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I haven't used VR or AR, for the sake of interest I would try, but I definitely won’t buy it.
2. Yes, definitely. VR technology isn't as complicated as many believe, it was possible a long time ago, the problem was always the hardware. Personal computers are now powerful enough to render the VR environment and it will become more and more popular.
3. I'm a graphic designer and I'm currently mostly into VR. I've done some environments before and now we are working as a group on a space ship from Space Odyssey 2001 just to have a walk inside this movie classic. It's amazing how easy it is today to do those impossible things. Hundred years ago we would try to build it in real scale in some hangar, now we can just model it and display on the VR headset.
I'm sure VR is getting more and more popular, but I have the impression that it didn't take so deeply enough to talk about revolution.
Unfortunately, I had a chance to use the VR and I don't remember it very well. I was very nauseous and had problems with herringbone half a day later. I heard from my friends that this is a popular problem with VR.
Companies will be able to use VR to better visualize and design the product that they are developing. It could be useful to analyze its functionality of some products, and can also be modified multiple times if required.
2. From my point of view it has already become mainstream. With major tech brands such as Google, Samsung, HTC, Microsoft launching their own versions of VR devices, the popularity of these devices and virtual content is sky high.
3. Well, It's becoming popular so I think both VR and AR is used for fast developing purposes. I'm not really familiar with AR but I used to have VR set. And it's wonderful feeling.
2. To my mind, VR is not mainstream now because it is not perfect and we have good enough substitutes in real life. Many people say that their eyes are very tired and they feel a headache after usage of VR glasses.
3. Yes, in Google maps there is a beta test of AR maps. It uses your camera to show signs where to go, where to turn that are flying in the air with nice animations. I recommend everyone to try it.
1. I think yes. I've heared about many usages of vr in architecture, design, and event organizations, where companies were able to show the way everything would look like.
2. I don't know honestly. Still usage of vr requires from us to wear uncomfortable goggles. It all depends on technological improvement and what vr will have to offer in the future to me.
3. I do not have much experience with them. Only ar-ish kind of thing I encountered was the one implemented in pokemon go. About vr I had goggles on me for few minutes. It was fun experience, though quite uncomfortable due to the device.
If you want to learn more about this technology, I encourage you to go to vr rooms, there you can check the latest games on good equipment. From what I remember there are several such places in Warsaw.
Yeah, I think these technologies can bring a lot of good things into our lives, besides games entertaiments. It seems to me that if you use such technologies intelligently and for good purposes, you can achieve good results. For example, we can use virtual reality in some applications about history to recreate the atmosphere of some historical events.
2) The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
Probably yes, I think it's more of a technological breakthrough than a revolution.
3) What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I've created some AR masks for Instagram and also I use this kind of masks in Instagram. Besides that, I have experience with VR gaming. I like it.
3. Yeah, PokemonGo was the first such popular game showing the potential of AR
Thank you for your reply
Of course it is. There is no other kind of media that is comperable to VR when it comes to being immersive. Nothing else in the world makes you feel the same, so why would anyone limit it's possibilities to just entertainment. This might be a great platform for education or productivity.
2. The history of VR is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I think so, because there have never been a time in history when our technical possibilities were so advanced and this is the first time when our hardware is able to create nearly lifelike pictures in real time. Technology has came a long way and now it is accessible and can be experienced without serious compromises.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I've been working with VR for not a long time, but during that time I was able to gain a lot of knowledge about that subject. I know how much it has changed througout last few years and that its possibilities go a lot further than they are used right now. I had an opportunity to work on two enviroments for such platform and I am aware of how precise such project has to be. In the end, however, it is worth it.
2. I think we are only at the beginning of this road, when more applications for VR are invented and this technology is cheaper then it will be a revolution.
3. I had the opportunity to work with it, but I like AR much more, I do not like to cut myself off from the world.
Yes, definitely this an brilliant idea. If VR improves any of process which is not connected with entertainment this must be used.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
I would like to believe in that but the future will show us if VR is not replaced by another technology.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I have only one expirience with VR when I tryied to play an PlayStation game. That was interesting but nothing more. I do not feel the desire to use it again. Regarding AR I do not remember if I faced with this.
2. Looking at the current development of this technology, I think we are close to a real revolution.
3. My experiences are zero. I have never used such things. I only saw someone use them.
Yes, for instance ecommerce would be great, checking out the new arrivels with fingertips, that would be revolutionary.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a vr revolution?
not yet, we have just got ready the plaster and now it's time to build it.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I have only had small experiences like Google VR's and that's all for now.
I think yes, it can boost some industries or open the new way of interacting with clients. I think shortly will see how VR will be used not only for the entertaining.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a VR revolution?
I am not sure about now, maybe a little bit later in the future. When the technology of the VR will be better developed and improved. Now the VR industry has some problems with stabilization, size of the VR glasses and human feelings.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
I used to try VR. It was cool and interesting, but I would like to wait a few years before buying it. About AR, I am using it from time to time for my needs, like the standard iOS app for measuring or in some games, like Pokemon GO or in the new one Harry Potter game.
2. I think it was more popular 1 or 2 years ago, but it didn't keep it and didn't get full power.
3. I tried zloty terasz a VR fun but not handy. AR sounds more convenient and convenient
It's hard to question because we will never know how far will this specific technology go. For now on I think it's not a bad idea but in the future, it may be difficult.
2. The history of Vr is quite long and there have been many attempts to get into the mainstream. Do you think this is the moment and are we witnessing a VR revolution?
We can see that people use VR more and more often but I don't think it's VR revolution yet. We need to wait longer to see what real VR revolution will be.
3. What are your experiences with VR or AR?
Unfornetly I have never experienced any of those technologies.
