Week 8 [02.12 - 08.12.2019] "Mister Watson, come here, I want to see you."

"Mister Watson, come here, I want to see you." - this sentence was spoken by Alexander G. Bell during the first telephone conversation. Have you ever wondered what your life would be like without a telephone? Would it be possible to immediately contact a person who lives far away? How to call for help? Police, ambulance or fire brigade? It is said that one of the most valuable things in the world is information. In my opinion, information that cannot be transmitted is useless. I hope you see telephone is an amazing device.I hope that I convinced you that the phone is one of the greatest inventions of man. What's more, even though the 143rd anniversary has passed since the creation of the first phone, the development of the phone is still ongoing.

Origins

Do you often complain about your fate? That you still have bad luck? You are wrong! Elisha Gray was really unlucky. In 1876, two great scientists - Elisha Grey and Alexander Graham Bell worked on the development of telephone - more specifically, the use of an electromagnet, sound waves, membranes and microphones to create a device enabling contact at a considerable distance. It's amazing that although they worked separately, their work ended the same day. Then a race began to patent office. Bell was the first, but before he was considered the inventor of the telephone, he had to fight a court battle with Gray. In addition, there is a theory that neither Gray nor Bell were the first inventors of the phone. It was Antonio Meucci, but he did not have enough funds to patent his device. So close and yet so far away.

Another breakthrough date in the history of telephones is April 3, 1973. It was then that the first mobile phone was presented - basically the father and mother of mobile phones Motorola DynaTAC. Interestingly, it launched 10 years later. It was terribly expensive ($ 4,000), bulky, had a small memory (only 30 numbers), and battery lasted only 30 minutes. But it works! It can be said that Motorola started new stage of history of phone - mobile phone.

What’s next?
Phone development continues until this day. Today, it is not even easy to say what we actually have in our pockets? Modern phone is much closer to computer. Thanks it you can call, write, take pictures, navigate - anything. I am asking myself today, how will the phones look like in the future? In 5-10 years? Or maybe we won't have them at all?

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
I think it was of the greatest inventions but in my opinion inventing wheel was even greater achievement that changes everyone's life.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?
No, I'm not much of a 'gadgeteer'. While looking for a phone I'm usually checking if it has good camera and dual-SIM in it as it's convenient to me to have both numbers ( private and work ) on one phone.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?
I think that phones already are pretty advanced and don't really changed that much in terms of last couple of years.

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
I think that's one of the top inventions ever but still a computer or maybe a processor takes to spot. Maybe a wheel but i don't consider it as a invention as to invent it people only had to observe environment.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?
I dont know if i'm one but i always look for the newest models as i believe that these are the best possible i don't really care about looking at the specs as flag versions normally have everything that i need.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?
They will look very similar to what they look right now. Maybe someone will invent some completely new and fresh design but i'm not able to predict it :D
Thank you for your opinion. Just like you, I think that the phone should be used primarily for communication. Other additions are usually not very useful gadgets. According to last question, I do not agree with you. It seems to me that there is still room for development. I feel the era of "flexible screens" coming.
Thank you for your opinion. I agree with you, I also don't consider wheela as a invention. What do you think about "elastic screen" like Motorola Razr?
1. I think that internet is greater. Telephone was a great invention, but telegraphy was already invented and widely used back then, so the increase of quality of communication by introducing voice might have been shocking and impressive, but I struggle to see a breakthrough there. It surely changed the way we communicate, but it required to give a mass of people access to the telephone, which was difficult and didn’t happen that quickly.

2. I am keen on powerful PCs. I hate weak computers, no matter what I do with them. The same
applies to smartphones – I can’t stand lags and slow processing. Moreover, I belong to The Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. I feel satisfaction when I can reach high frame rate alongside great video quality. Well, I don’t have enough time to play games right now, but after I finish to study, buying a monster computer with custom liquid cooling is one of the first things to do. I also care about the sound quality. I don’t accept existence of brands like Beats or JBL and I don’t touch them. Instead I try to find something interesting among Audio Technica, AKG, Beyerdynamic, etc. If I were a true gadgeteer, I should probably consider a smartwatch, but its battery life makes it unreliable and I am too much used to have a watch on my hand all the time whenever I need it.

3. Some people would say that smartwatches would replace smartphones, but I personally don’t think so. Many people just like big screens and phones like Galaxy Fold might be a better direction. I think that it is more probable that smartphones will displace laptops and PCs in office work. They are already powerful enough to run basic tasks like word, internet browser and playing media. Microsoft and Samsung tried to do this by sophisticated docking stations and software, but something went wrong, and people didn’t understand it.

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
It is surely in the top of my ranking, but I would not say that it is the greatest on the list. It is really hard to say it from the top of my head, but I guess it would be something that gave a birth to numberous other inventions. I am thinking about an engine or similar thing.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?
I am, but not a huge one. I prefer spending money on travelling rather than buying gadgets. About the telephone features - most of them are important for me, but they have different weights and the decision process is really hard in my case.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?
I do not predict major changes in this field in the nearest future, but it is impossible to tell what will be later on.

Thanks for your reply. It seems to me that it always takes some time before a person starts using some new solution. Therefore, inventions are not immediately available to the public. According to last question, I've never heard of such a theory, but I think it can actually happen. I am most afraid of the efficiency of such solutions, but probably producers will come up with something :)
Thanks for your comment. It seems to me that integrated circuits were a breakthrough invention.

1. I'm not sure if it's the greatest one, but it's definitely in the top. Generally speaking ability to communicate remotely is a big convenience. For me more important are inventions like the Internet - it enables us to share everything we want to everyone we want. What's more you can find anything you want in the Internet - it enables us learning anything we want. We may think of these two inventions as similar - they all let us communicate in an easier way.

2. No, I'm not. For me, the phone doesn't have to possess sophisticated functionalities, I just use it for texting, googling and checking things like mail or buses.

3. I have no idea, probably they will be quite similar to modern ones. In my opinion current form is quite convenient - they can serve us as simple, fully remote computer, minimizing or maximizing their size wouldn't be a good idea.
Thank you for your opinion. I agree with you, but I think, but I think that without the invention of the telephone, you couldn't invent the computer. It seems to me that the key event for the development of both computers and phones was the invention of integrated circuits.

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
Telephone is a great invention. It's as great as radio, television, electricity etc. Nothing special actually, it's like every invention that changes human life and communication way.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?
For me most important is that telephone works fast, and the quality of sound. Also I don't like when phone has a lot of features that I don't use. Actually I don't use phone for calling someone but for internet features.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?
Telephones are already in future, we use them for everything, reading, internet surfing, communications, content consumption, work and much more.

1. To me there is no thing that would be the greatest invention. Telephone surely is one of the greatest. Nobody could possibly imagine modern world without a phone in the pocket allowing you to communicate to anyone in the world immediately almost.

2. I wouldn't say that I am a gadgeteer, to me the most important things in the phone are its display size and working speed/comfortability.

3. Possibly there might be no phones. We may have some chip injected into our brain or that it all in something like lenses.

1. I think no. One of the greatest, but not the most. A lot of inventions were invented, which has evolved to this day, and we also actively use them, from paper to steam engines, from light lamps to the laws of electromagnetism and so on. It is very difficult to evaluate each of the inventions on a scale. But in certain areas this is permissible. For example, in pharmaceuticals - penicillin, in radio engineering - a receiver and so on.

2.No, I don't consider myself as such. I do not pay much attention to such things. Well, consider my specific example. My smartphone. I bought it a very long time ago and didn’t think very much before buying it, it’s just that my old phone is outdated, and I’m not demanding in this regard. Therefore, I had to renewed the smartphone, the last time I made such a purchase three years ago. I am now pleased with it and I have enough of it.

3. It seems to me in the future when this issue reaches a high degree of perfection, the phones will look like chips near the ear or small bracelets that display functions and menus in the form of a hologram. Yes, in general, as in science fiction films.
1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?

The phone is certainly a very important invention, but not the most important one. As far as communication is concerned, I would rather bet on a computer and the Internet.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?

I belong rather to the talkers and the phone is a very important thing for me. It is my notebook, calendar, alarm clock, camera, wallet, multimedia center and much more. When buying it is important for me to support all the latest communication technologies and to be high performance so that I do not experience any problems in everyday use.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?

Looking at the latest phone designs, the focal point will be an even bigger screen. Probably the folding constructions will return to favor.

I think you're right. The future of phones is large flexible screens.
According to the first question, I think there would be no computers or internet without inventing the telephone. Did you consider this?
Thank you for your opinion. Interesting theory, let only these chips do not affect our health.
Thanks for your answers. I agree with you, it is impossible for the current world to exist without telephones. Have you ever imagined a world without phones?
Thank you for your opinion. What do you think of phones with flexible, large screens?
1. Telephone is amazing inventions. Just look how world became smaller with commercialising it and how many things you can do with it now after many improvements.
2. Yes but I'm not very picky in terms of phones. I'll just buy the newest iPhone when I want to switch phones. I love the design and features which Apple provides so it's 100% product for me.
3. It's hard to imagine. 10 years ago no one knew what we would be able to do with phones now so we can't be sure how it would look like in next 10 years.

1.
I wouldn’t say that. I think that electricity is the most prominent invention in the human history. Without that amazing invention any electronic and based on semiconductors devices couldn't work. Generally speaking it including telephones as well as these devices couldn't work without electricity as well :)

2.
Yeah, I am kind of gadgeteer, but I am very frugal at the same time so I buy only gadgets that are essential for me and replace them when it is necessary, rather than because the newer model was released. Some years ago I have started technology vortal and I have been cooperating with hardware brands, which give me their products to test it and prepare reviews. Therefore, I had a lot of great, top-shelf products without the need for paying money for that. :) Now, when I need to pay for every device, I make my choices more wisely.

3.
It is difficult to say, but I wouldn't expect it might change in the recent future. Let’s consider the last 10 year, I would say that phones wouldn't change so much during this time. Of course, it is getting way much faster and bigger… and the second feature is not a good one, while e.g. keeping the newest phones, on the one hand, is really inconvenient. In the further future, the idea of phones might completely change. Maybe future phones will be integrated and managed by people's' minds or will use a kind of AR. Who knows.

1. I think it's ONE of the greatest inventions. It is not possible to say that the invention of the phone is better than the invention of a medicine for the disease, which killed people 200 years ago.
2. Probably, we are all gadgeteers :) For me, the ratio of quality to price is important. And also scenarios of use.
3. It's hard to even imagine. Perhaps we can insert a chip into our body, which will be controlled by our brain, and we can call a friend just thinking about it (hi, "Black Mirror" series). Or glasses that will read the movements of the eyes and the interposition will happen in this way.
Thanks for your feedback. "Biocommunication" is one of the ways of telephone development. However, I think it will take a long time to develop. What do you think about flexible screens?
Also, I use Apple products. I think that these are perfectly optimized devices. Of course, they have their drawbacks - high price. However, you pay for quality. Have you ever used an Android phone?
Many thanks for your feedback. I agree with you, if not for electricity, it would not be possible to develop other inventions.
Probably you are right

1. Do you think telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
Certainly the phone is a great invention, but, it seems to me, not the greatest. I believe that the invention of the computer, which ushered in the digital age and accelerated the technological development of mankind, was much more important and more difficult to create.

2. Are you a gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying a phone?
Probably yes. As a programmer I love all kinds of computer-aided technologies. I consider the most important features of phones are speed, memory capacity, ability to make calls, and it would be nice to have access to the Internet.

3. What do you think the phones will look like in the future?
I think that in the future, people will have under skin some kind of chip or something that will be able to project a screen directly on their hand, and a speaker and microphone will be implanted near the ear and vocal cords respectively.
Thanks for your reply. It is difficult to indicate the greatest, the most important invention. I have the impression that these technical things are closely related.

The telephone is one of the greatest inventions of humanity. A small portable computer in everyone's pocket is a great vision. Unfortunately, the phones terribly spoil interpersonal relationships. It all goes the wrong way, but it's more the Internet's fault than the phones themselves.

I do not think that I am gadgeteer. For me, the phone should work smoothly, make calls, send SMSs and give Internet access. I need nothing more to be happy.

A year ago I thought that the phones would be in the form of smart watches with extra functions, but the foldable phones made me have no idea what the future of phones would look like.
1. I don't think that the telephone is the biggest invention, it's hard to say which invention is the biggest. I think, however, cars or electricity and its transmission in the form of AC is a greater discovery.
2. Yes, I like gadgets. However, now in the phone I primarily look at its strength so that it can swim with me on a kayak and that it has basic functionalities.
3. I'm curious how it will roll and what technologies these phones will use. Personally, I'm waiting for graphene technologies. Now, however, I think that manufacturers are too much and there are 20 phones that are practically the same only with a different name.

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?
Of course it is, the invention of telephones nowadays even helps you to make money or connect someone who is far away to you easily with just a few clicks.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?
well, honestly I love mobile photograpghy so I would like to get the best one which takes good photos and also it needs to be smart enough to let me install my favorite photo edit applications.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?
probably the nowadays iPhones will be gone but they will be replaced with eyePhones.
1. I think the telephone is certainly one of many important inventions for humanity. In my opinion, it is hard to indicate the most remarkable invention; one that changed people's lives to a greater extent than the rest; vaccines, the Internet, the electric network and many others - all contributed to humans' well-being.

2. Yes, I do consider myself as one. When buying a phone, many things are important to me, design and overall smoothness, frequency of updates, length of support, quality of the camera and display, to name just a few.

3. I presume we will see a lot of phones with foldable screens in the near future.
s15740 said…
1. I think the greatest one was transistor.
2. Phone should make and receive calls.
3. There will be no any phones in future, just the telepathy.
1.I think you can't actually compare many inventions. However, I must agree that phone is one of those which introduced huge changes in everyday life. But I am not really able to name the one invention that was the most significant or clearly state that inventing phone was the most important of all.

2.I'm definitely not a "gadgeteer". I like simplicity and equipment that is able to manage basic user requirements. I am also not a supporter of using many different gadgets to every action. I prefer one device that ensure many functions. So when I buy for example new phone i check not only RAM or operating system but also camera parameters, display quality etc.

3.On one hand screens are getting bigger and bigger with every new model. On the other hand creators of newer gadgets strive to make them the thinnest and lightest possible. There is also huge interest in VR technology lately and holograms. Voice controling also became very common in modern electronic equipment. I guess future phone might be a combination of all the above.
Adam Tokarczyk said…
1. There are many great inventions and telephone can be considered one of them, but I wouldn't call it the greatest invention. I'd rather not pick one, because it's really hard to do so, but if I was forced then maybe steam engines? I think that times of industrial revolution really boosted civilization advancement a lot, and it wouldn't be possible without steam engines. Otherwise we could say that latest modern technology is 'new' greatest invention. Some people mention wheel and I think no one can disagree that it was incomparably the greatest invention of its times. But how can we compare wheel to telephone? Telephone easily beats it, yet falters when we put it next to internet. So we can't really compare inventions from different times on even terms.

2. Not really. Even when it comes to telephone, I use it just to contact with people, listen to music and sometimes browse internet.

3. Most likely, I think, that in its 'final state' telephones will be built into our bodies. Whether on our arms, behind ear or straight into brain.

1. Do you think that telephone is the greatest invention? If not what do you think is greater?

I think telephone is the basis of communication nowadays. But let's not forget that before the phone was made, a writing had to be created. It was also a huge invention of old times. But seriously now, internet and computers are a very important invention.

2. Are you gadgeteer? What features are important for you while buying phone?

Good quality telephone, large disk capacity and a well-functioning battery. And then the operating system.

3. What do you think about the phones will look like in the future?

The phone will be built into our fingerprints and you won't need to carry it in your pocket.
Denys Pogurskyi said…
1. Yes, phones are one of the top inventions that people could make.
2. I don’t think so ... Well, I rarely change phones, so I try to take those that would be very convenient and in terms of functionality that would be enough for me for a couple of years.
3. I assume that everything will come down as in the cartoon Futorama, where they made special equipment that was inserted into the eyes, after which people could control the interface using their eyes.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
