Week 7 [25.11-01.12.2019] The race for happiness

I always believed that happiness is the easiest and at the same time, the most difficult thing to achieve; that happiness depends only on what I do about it.

In this short, film presented below, Steve Cutts presents a rat race for happiness. I think one’s search for happiness may relate to the rat race for happiness shown in the video. The animation is from 2017 so maybe some of you may already know it.

My questions for you:
  1. What do you think about the video?
  2. What does happiness mean to you?
  3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?

Comments

In this film, happiness is presented as a desire to have expensive things, as a pursuit for money in a boring job but also as an escape in alcohol and drugs. This is quite common in a world that is based on consumption, one succeeds and enjoys expensive things, while the other escapes into addictions. For me, happiness means knowing that someone needs you. It's a belief that you and your family are safe, not only financially, but also healthy and so on. I have never been a materialist so expensive things don't impress me. I will achieve full happiness when I reach a point in my life where I will be able to protect myself and my loved ones, and at the same time I will be able to enjoy life. At the moment I have not yet reached it, so I am not happy.

1.What do you think about the video?
This video let us know more about the society of rats, just kidding! Actually I had watched this video before, and this video reminds me of my city, it is full of people everywhere and everything is a struggle, fast paced life makes most of people there never actually feel happy as the rats in this video. Something interesting is why the rat didn't catch the money in 3:41 haha!

2.What does happiness mean to you?
Simply doing what I want everyday, that will be enough.

3.Can you honestly say that you are happy?
Yes, I am doing what I want, although it is not everyday now, and my family are healthy, what could be more happy? Just don't treat it like "money=happiness".

What do you think about the video?
I've seen that video a few times for now and it never surprised me. Maybe it's a precise picture of our society but if people are unaware what real happiness means than everyone can create it's own definition, so I wouldn't put everyone in the same bag. For me this video is hurting for a lot of people as it pictures them as some stupid lemmings when there are citizens who just enjoys this lifestyle and I personally know many of that kind of people.

What does happiness mean to you?
I don't know i don't have my own definition.

Can you honestly say that you are happy?
Yes i can, I have everything that i want, I can do anything that i want and i have people around me who i honestly love so of course i'm happy.

What do you think about the video?
I have already watched the video several times I would say it is one of the best and thought-provoking short indie video I have ever seen. The artistic style and music are a small piece of art but the metaphor of the rat race is even more significant. Every time I saw the video I was wondering why me and other people around are so blind and easy to manipulate.

What does happiness mean to you?
Unfortunately, I cannot fully answer the question, as my perception of happiness is not super clear. I think that happiness is the feeling of fulfillment and lack of worries. I have that feeling every time I am on trekking.

Can you honestly say that you are happy?
No I am not truly happy person but it is partially related to my attitude to world and character. I still try to find my own way and this video definitely helps me in that.
What do you think about the video?
I think it shows us the reality. But in the same time, if you want live, eat etc. you have to work. Of course you could have a heritage or you earned a lot of very quickly, then you can stop this race. But will you? I don't think so. Just life.
What does happiness mean to you?
Be able sincerely smile and laugh, enjoy the moments and don't loose yourself in others thoughts.
Can you honestly say that you are happy?
Yes, i do.

I have seen this video some time ago and it terrified me. I would never want to experience life like this. Happiness for me is taking care about people I love and appreciating them. Tasting great, extraordinary food, listen to awesome music, travelling and spending time close to nature. I try to look for happiness in everyday small things, to experience life deeply and get the most out of it as I can. In the same time I still look for greater happiness, safe home and family and stabilization thats why I can't say I am completely happy.
yet.
1. I think that the video is beautifully animated and the story teaches us an important lesson. It's a little humorous, a little brutal, a little sad making a perfect allegory to our lives.

2. I believe that happiness is the most important thing in our lives. It is the acceptance of our selves, our money status or the goals that we managed to achieve, not looking around and comparing oneself to others.

3. Unfortunately not. There are days that I'm truly happy. In those days every puppy I meet on the streets is the "goodest boy," people are friendly, nature is beautiful, even when the weather is bad I can see the beauty in the rain or fog. However, there are also days that I'm feeling insecure. I constantly think about my failures and that stupid thing that I said five years ago. It's a constant struggle for me to feel happiness. But I'm working on it :)

What do you think about the video?
I have just viewed the video and I would state it is truly outstanding and provocative short outside the box video I have ever observed. The imaginative style is a little bit of workmanship however the illustration of the futile way of life is considerably progressively noteworthy. When seeing the video I was asking why me and others around are so visually impaired and simple to manipulate.I think it shows us the truth. Be that as it may, in a similar time, in the event that you need live, eat and so forth you need to work...

What does happiness mean to you?
happiness (noun) hap·pi·ness | \ ˈha-pē-nəs
Definition of happiness 1a : a state of well-being and contentment : JOY b : a pleasurable or satisfying experience I wish you every happiness in life. I had the happiness of seeing you — W. S. Gilbert

just kidding.. shortly for me the happiness is finally being at peace with yourself after having a lot of self-hatred.

Can you honestly say that you are happy?
Mostly yes.

1. What do you think about the video?

I’ve actually seen it before, so it doesn’t have that much of an impact for me as it did, while I’ve seen it for the first time. In this video happiness is portrayed as something achievable by expensive things, fast cars, drugs and alcohol. It’s of course the metaphor of our society, consumed by aspiration of wealth. Probable aim of this animation is to show the viewer, that it’s not the right path. And I agree.

2. What does happiness mean to you?

I don’t think happiness is something that accompanies us all the time. For me it’s a feeling that comes and goes. Sometimes we experience it for few minutes, sometimes for few days or even weeks. It’s like a ray of sun that heats our skin. Feeling in our gut, that makes us feel carefree, as if all the weight has been removed from our shoulders. Happiness gives us strength to conquer the world and face everyday problems. I don’t think it can be found in objects or purchases of our whims. I think it’s a feeling found in relations with other people, in everyday pleasures, small things that makes our life matter.

3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?

Considering my perception on happiness I wouldn’t say I’m happy all the time. Nevertheless, I am an optimist, my life is unproblematic, the career that I’ve chosen gives me more and more satisfaction on the daily basis, I have strength to learn new things day after day and my family and relations are blooming. Taking it all under consideration -I would say I’m lucky enough to have happy and positive life that gives me huge amount of satisfaction, even when I’m not feeling happy all the time.

What do you think about the video?
This video is a very good job. I like it. Definitely the video makes sense of a fuzzy understanding of happiness in the modern world. The modern world with all its pace of development and new orders dictates a wrong concept of happiness to a person. There are things that make a person happy for a short period of time, but the effect of such things is limited. As a result, without understanding and not enduring a life lesson, the protagonist again makes a mistake and falls into a trap in which there are a large number of the same ones as him.

What does happiness mean to you?
It seems to me that happiness is not material in nature. And even emotions may not make a person happy. It seems to me real happiness is when you do not think about what happiness is, because it does not bother you.

Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I think I'm happy. I think about this very often. I mean, that I often remember that I am happy, but not about what happiness is. Just a state of mind.
1. What do you think about the video?
Wow, this video absolutely shocked me. I've never seen it. At the very beginning we can see the masses and the gray reality in which we chase after "happiness". Only at the very end it turns out that this "happiness" is really money, because the masses are driving more and more consumerism and perfectly matched marketing, which is to make the masses never reach the true state of being happy. I think the movie gives a lot to think about, it's perfectly thought out and each frame of the film tells a different story. I really wasn't expecting such a thing, but I'm glad I could watch it.

2. What does happiness mean to you?
In my case, happiness is a complicated matter. I think that I've never really experienced a feeling of happiness, it works a bit differently for me. Namely, I can't be happy for more than a few hours. I call it a "teaser", which appears and disappears quickly. For example - I have heard of the latest update to my favorite game - there are many changes and elements that I've been waiting for a long time. At the moment, I fall into a momentary euphoria, search for as much information as possible, etc. However, with time this feeling passes, and I return to reality. It doesn't take more than several dozen minutes, sometimes several hours.

3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I'm not happy, I'm a pessimist and introvert. I always count on the worst and stress from many elements of my everyday life. There are sometimes such phenomena of momentary euphoria, but it passes very quickly. I wouldn't call it happiness.
1. I have mixed feelings. Of course, I understand the general message. Each of us participates in the rat race, but we want to be a participant in it. If you don't want to, you don't have to work. You always have a choice. Why are you going to college? In order to get the education that will be needed in a better-paid job. In addition, it seems to me that comparing people to rats is a bit offensive.

2. and 3. Maybe I'm not happy all the time - it would be quite monotonous. These are usually holidays when I can sit quietly with all my family. Or meeting friends when I laugh and talk. I am happy when I don't feel pressure, I don't think about duties and worries. And I also feel free when I achieve my goals - I graduated, completed tasks, wrote English comments.
I see the video as a metaphor for pursuing happiness that can be found in shallow things not searched in the depth of own being. I believe happines does not have to be something big. That litlle things matter most. I agree that knowing the loved ones are ok brings a feeling of peace
For me the video presents a sad reality, I think people have lost sight of what is really important and only important search is for meaningless things.
I think that the video shows that humankind (at leat the capitalist world) hast taken a wrong path. It is a vicious circle: More money, more things, more work to aford more and more. Maybe the message is that material welfare isn't everything. Yes, I agree with the fact that that everyone is in a rat race to but it doesn't have to be a goal itself.
I do not put everyone in the same bag. For me the video is more about losing perspective. This kind od pursuing something means also loneliness. You don't have time for interactions with someone else.
Sadly, the video presents a very realistic aspct of modern life. It is easy to get lost in so many temptaations or to lose perfect. I think it requires a great amount od selfawerness and confidence in what makes you happy not to get manipulated. I myself sometimes blinded.
Yes, everyone has to earn a living, but that doesn't mean we have to transform it in a goal itself. Life isn't just about making a living or having more and more money.

1.While watching this video at first I've been like 'ok, not suprised', but then I got a very mixed feelings with pure disgust at the end. I'am aware that it's a metaphor for the modern lifestyle, but it's sooo hurtful and disrespectful for so many people. Maybe life looks like this for boomers, but I think it's different for younger people. For me, this video doesn't show the race for happiness, because once the rat gets what it chases, it looses interest and starts looking for something else. It's not happiness, it's not even the happiness from little things. It's called greed and has nothing to do with happiness.

2. Happiness, for me at least, is the awareness that I can overcome every problem in my life, the enjoyment obtained from things that makes me calm, the loving family , the self-respect and thought that I didn't waste my life

3. No, I'm not, I have a lot to achieve and to change before I'd say that I'm happy
1. I’ve seen it before, it’s one of those videos that are designed for people to “open their eyes”, presenting some basic idea. Nice execution and art style, though.
2. Some abstract goal in life which can be achieved through some small deeds as well as through some monumental and important acts, all depending on individual person.
3. Generally – no. But I always have a bar of chocolate beside me to keep things under control :)

I have seen this video before but I really liked watching it one more time. It reminds me what is important in life and to stop thinking about material things and money because it's just some stuff. Your memories and people that are important to you, this is important and can give you happiness.

It's not that easy to answer this question. Happiness is for me something that gives me purpose in life, that gives me fuel to keep going. It's people that I can share my thoughts and day experiences with. It's memories I have and share with others. Happiness is something abstract for me.

Yes I can say I'm happy for a most part. I have some ups and downs but I try to focus on the good stuff.

1. Yes, I really enjoyed it. It is a really good depiction of nowadays' societies. We live in a great rush and sometimes forget what we are working for. It shows peoples/rats, which made their main goal a run, not something that is at the end of it.

2. It's a really hard question as it depends on the person. For one happiness is a family life and a bunch of friends. Others prefer to fulfill at work. For some people happiness is knowledge and academic titles.

3. I think I'm. I'm happy about my work, studies and private life. What's more, good balance between these things make me feel sure that when something is going bad in one of these fields, on others everything is working out.

1. In my opinion this movie describes how people purse happiness, because we don't appreciate what we have and we constantly looking for something better. In addition this movie shows how people live nowadays and I think that is horrible, because we chase a new job, more money, luxurious things instead of appreciate what we have and spend time with friends and family.

2. Happiness means for me something that make me comfortable, content. In addition I think that happiness give us sense of calmness. Personally, I feel fullfilment when I can ride a motorcycle, because I feel free and I can forget about my problems. Thank to it I can clear my mind and I'm just happy.

3. Yes I can, because I have great friends and family that I can rely on. In addition I feel fullfilled at work and I have hobby that give me opportunity to come away from routine.
1. I think it's part pessimistic and part realistic point of view on society. Showing mostly that you can't actually buy happiness as it's commonly repeated.

2. Happiness would be living far away from big cities and people. Just surrounded by nature in small wooden hut, waking up every morning to see trees behind window.

3. No, I'm definitely not.
Kuba Berliński said…

1. I think it sums up the way our society works quite nicely. We are money so money based that often we forget what makes us happy. In many cases, unfortunately, people cannot afford to be happy.

2. To me happiness is a general satisfaction coming from your life. If you feel fine with yourself and with your life, then I think you can call yourself a happy person.

3. I think, I am. I do not have any major life troubles neither am I bothered by anything really. As I mentioned in previous answer, I am satisfied with my life.
Bartosz Warda said…
1. What do you think about the video?

I think that I don't remember those scenes from Ratatouille.. But seriously now, every shot of this animation has so many little jokes about society. People are constantly looking for something better and 'richer' but that is not the way we should be living.

2. What does happiness mean to you?

Happiness for me has two types. The first one would be small happiness from the things we experience every day like laughing hard by seeing a good meme or helping others in easy tasks for you but not for the other person. And as for the second kind of happiness I would like to mark the general 'happiness bar in life'. That is to say if you are happy with what you have, for instance if you have a relationship, is it healthy, or general health of the family is on point. The general things that we usually omit in our thoughts.

3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?

I think that I am moderately happy. I am not happy with my performance but I am happy that I have the best supporters I could ever ask for in my life. I think I would be much more happy in life if not for the disappointments that other people were giving me. But I am not going to give up, I will move forward through life I am 100% sure of that.

1. Is a great one, I laughed three or four times. But something in it make me feel a little wary. Not we dictate terms to the world, but world dictates to us, or maybe it`s not the world, but those who have changed it for themselves …
2. Harmony with myself and balance with encirclement.
3. It`s not fear to ask such provocative questions. Everything in this world, feelings and emotions too, is changeable.
Someday I`m happy, someday I feel bad,
Someday I`m frustrated, someday I`m glad!
Someday I`m cheerful, someday I`m sad …..bla-bla-bla.
But understanding why it is happening helps to be in balance (to stop the synthesis of hormones by the glands.)

1. The video shows exactly how the world is functioning these times. We are running like a rats to have more and more, just to show that "we have". In these run sometimes we lost our minds and relations because we want to achieve something. We love shining things and be happy, but the items dont bring you happiness.

2. For me it means, being satisfied. Having a good relationship with somebody I love. Have a satisfied job and enjoying my life.

3. I can not say it right now. I lost somebody who was very close to me. But I know it is temporary. One day I am sure that I could write that I am trully happy.

1. This film is very interesting and is a very good metaphor for the modern lifestyle.

2. Happiness is peace, high self-esteem and lack of stress.

3. No, I cannot. My life is not constant, sometimes I am happy and sometimes sad, so I can't say that I'm generally happy.
Paweł Hadacz said…

1. I think this video shows how much emphasis the current system puts on us. this video shows how people get programmed. Only money and work matter.

2. Happiness means for me to have friends around me whom I can trust and I know that they like me for what I am and not who I am. Happiness for me is the opportunity to make my dreams come true and make my loved ones happy.

3.I think I can say I'm happy but I'm not happy completely. There are many pressures from the current system that make it very difficult for me to be who I want to be.
1. It's a pretty original and accurate way of showing real life problem of pursuiting for happiness.

2. For me, happiness means time, when i don't have to thing about my everyday problems and when i can just think about what's happening in the given moment

3. In most situations i can't say that i'm happy

Yes, I'm very happy with my life.

1. This video shows something close to every one of us. It also makes you stop to think about what’s really important for you, make us Wonder if we really are heading in the right direction for us. Are we ready to join this fake pursuit for hapiness or we just want to take a deep breath to think what’s our next step.
2. For me happiness is a sum of few aspects. Firstly, to be pure happy I can not be worried about anything important for me, I should have clear mind. Secondly, I need people around, I need people which I love and care about and be sure they are ok too. Hapinnes for me is state where I can peacefully live my life and be surrounded by important people.
3. I’m not fully happy, but I’m not sad either. Actually, I’m on good way to be happy. I try to look at the bright side of a moon and personally I like to believe there are a lot great things that may come to me in near future.

1. I think the film shows people who have a mental disorder or are simply bound by a loan for 30 years. Work, work and work again. If anyone has such a life, I feel sorry for him. This is probably even worse than the slaves' work in building the pyramids in ancient Egypt.
2. Happiness for me is the opportunity to do what you want. Not following others, not making decisions like others, just doing what you feel like now.
3. Yes, I personally think that I am very happy. I am healthy, my family is also healthy, I do what I feel like doing. Is great.

I would call this film '1984: Rat's edition'. But I don't agree that this a metaphor for the modern lifestyle. Somebody can say that a boring job is a punishment but others can love this job because it was very hard to get employed or because he wants to earn money to travel to other countries. I just want to say that different kinds of people have different meanings of happiness. For me happiness is stability. I can't say that I am 100% happy now but I am on that way.
Szymon Kluczek said…
1. This video is really thought-provoking, it encourages us to think what really could make us happy in our lives, because money, drugs, alcohol, clothes or different stuff contrary to popular belief will never give us happiness.

2. Happiness to me means having loving family, good and reliable friends, a job which makes me feel fulfilled and satisfied. If you feel fine, self-satistied and well-liked you are happy, you don’t need anything else then.

3. Yes, I can. I’m an optimist so I always try to see the bright side of life. I don’t focuse my attention on difficulties, problems ect. I just don’t want to distress myself if I can avoid it. In my opinion key to happiness is to always do your best but not give up if something goes wrong, you have to realize that not everything is up to you. It’s so simple, happiness is propinquitous for everyone.
1. Everything that was presented in the video is very real and depressing. We often forget what’s the point of living and focus only on making money. This metaphor presents how the modern world functions.

2. To enjoy the small moments in life, appreciate people’s efforts and live peacefully. Good food, music, long-term relations with others and travels, these are more material things. On the path of life it can change but for me it’s important to remember your non material values that make you happy.

3. Mostly yes, of course there are many situations that makes me worry but I try to send it to the past. Achieving small goals helps me to go forward and be happier.
Very interesting presentation.
Happiness... Hmm...
For me happiness is a simple matter, but difficult to define. They can be seen as a ordinary life fart, and can be seen as a state of mind. I definitely prefer the second option. I see happiness as such an inner joy of the whole situation. Such a mix of pride and joy additionally filmed by the action of various senses. Am I happy? Definitely yes!
What do you think about the video?
It shows the reality in which we are living which upsets me.
What does happiness mean to you?
Being in place you love the most with people you care about doing what your heart desire.
Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I am not happy

1. What do you think about the video?
Honestly I did not like it. It is very distorted and simplified vision of societies today. I have seen similar videos and pictures many times and they just do not seem very objective to me.

2. What does happiness mean to you?
There is no one specific definition of happiness. Happiness can be brought by many different things, from the minor ones like spending nice time with people You like to the big ones like having a well paid and dreamed job. Also, happiness is not long and constant. It is rather short and brief, but taking place many times in a lifetime. So is the sadness, unless You have depression or similar condition.

3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I don't think so. Although the number and frequency of situations when I feel happy lately is quite big, I don't feel that way all the time. As I wrote above, no one can be happy all the time.
What do you think about the video?
I think that it is a very pessimistic, hyperbolic and depressive illustration of parody on today's life. The author of that movie should be a depressed and very disappointed person to see the life in a such way.
What does happiness mean to you?
For me happiness means self-realization, lovely family and people who I love, a feeling of being loved, cozy home and tasty food.
Can you honestly say that you are happy?
Yes, I am happy :D

1. What do you think about the video?
Nice allegory about our modern life. Unfortunately it is quite predictable and to be honest it is nothing new. There are multiple shorts telling us basically the same. We are all part of giant rat race for happiness.
2. What does happiness mean to you?
For me happiness is mostly hope. Hope and freedom. If someone can guarantee me both then I'm truly happy. None temporal goods can bring me happiness as much as hope and freedom.
3. Can you honestly say that you are happy?
No, I'm not. But I will be. I'm on a way to be happy. I still need to conquer few obstacles but I can see the end of the road. Which somehow also bring a bit of happiness.

1.What do you think about the video?
I think this video is trying to show blind people how the world works now but honestly, nowadays everyone knows how life looks like in our times and there are people who enjoy it.

2.What does happiness mean to you?
I don't have my own definition and it's really hard to put in any words right now.

3.Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I would say there are good and bad things that happened in my life but honestly, I wouldn't change a thing if I could so I think I am happy.
1. I saw this video many times (popular video on internet) I know what creator want to show use that we live in rat race blinded by money we trap ourself in to prison. I know many people feel this that way but personally I see world much more positively.

2. Time spent with my best friends and people who are close to my heart.

3. Yes I'm happy. There are days when I feel bad but it's nothing special just bad moment of my happy life.
I think that this video is quite good presentation of our everyday world. Endless pursuit of money, material goods and helpless trying to relieve ourselves with alcohol and drugs. In general I think that this video is a bit too dark and negative but it definitely has some good points. What happiness mean to me? It is not an easy question. I think that happiness means to me that I am in general content about my life and don’t regret anything that I did. I have fulfilled the above conditions so I am sure that I can honestly say that I am happy. Everything in my life is exactly where it should be so I don’t have any reason to feel sad or sorry.

1. This video is very sad and depressing. Happiness is shown as the pursuit of money. If they are not there, everything else loses sense and we drown our sorrows in alcohol and other yields and roll to the bottom. It is sad to look at this video because I realize that a lot of people have lost the joy of life by racing for money.

2. Happiness for me is that I can spend time with family and friends. There are many things that give us happiness, you just need to open yourself to them. I think money is very important in life, but most important is health and inner peace.

3.I try to be a happy person although it is not so easy.

What do you think about the video?
Actually it's true and sad that reality already became like that. I would say people nowadays think that happiness is just money or some amount that costs something
What does happiness mean to you?
"HAPPINESS" it’s something that brings smile to my face, it’s that amazing feeling that makes me dance and sing, it’s a feeling when I want express in some physical form. Happiness is meeting your parents after a long time. When I gift something to my parents from my savings and etc.
Can you honestly say that you are happy?
I go through life hearing people chatter about how they want to be happy and how they imagine their happy lives would look. Some say, if I get more money I will be happy. For me happiness is actually mean peace. Peace in my heart, peace in my minds, peace in my environment, peace in my live.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
