Week 7 [25.11 - 01.12.2019] Hand writing vs. tapping

Hand writing vs. tapping

If you had both the resources and the inclination, you might be able to get away with never hand-writing anything but your signature ever again. Most of us have smartphones, a computer, and other assorted digital programs and pieces of technology — plus virtual “assistants” like Alexa and Siri — to help us keep our lives in order. These gadgets can capture our to-do lists, schedules, important dates, and other snippets of thought we want to preserve.
But just because it’s technically possible to permanently ditch the notebook for the Notes app doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Research shows that writing stuff down — physically writing, wrapping your hand around a pen and moving it across a piece of paper — is one of the best ways to keep your thoughts organized and your memory sharp. In one study published in the journal Psychological Science, for example, researchers found that people who take notes on their computer tend to retain significantly less information than people who handwrite their notes.
“We found that students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand,” the study authors wrote. This was in large part because the ones with computers went into mental autopilot: “Laptop notetakers’ tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words is detrimental to learning.”
When you take notes by hand, you may record fewer words, but that works to your benefit: To take down the ones that really matter, you’ll be forced to actually think in real time about what you’re hearing.
You may be able to boost the brain benefits of handwritten notes even more with another long-lost elementary school skill: cursive. It doesn’t just help you take things down more quickly, it also helps you keep your attention on the information at hand, rather than the physical act of writing. “It creates a level of automaticity that means you’re writing faster and still having to think about the content of what you’re putting down on paper, but not about the actual mechanics.” says Christina Bretz, an occupational therapist and handwriting expert in Lexington, Kentucky
And in a sea of note-taking apps, it’s telling that some of the latest innovations seem to acknowledge the inherent value in doing things a little bit old school.
“A lot of the tablets and phones and even laptops are coming with software and styluses that actually let you handwrite,” Bretz says. “It’s pretty interesting that these tech companies are bringing that back. It speaks volumes.”

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I take hand-written notes very rarely nowadays - maybe sometimes for a groceries list.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I usually take useful notes at my work in some document etc.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think taking notes are very useful in general. Hand-written notes are popular in school and i think noting them by your hand really helps you to remember more at the exam. They are not so useful however at your work environment however - It's better to create some repository for your team that is describing some useful information and is easily accessible to everyone at anytime. It's as well saved online so you won't have to worry about losing it or you dog eating it :)
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I often take notes at the university, at work, and during daily duties. Most often these are notes on a computer or telephone. Sometimes I write something in my notebook.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I usually take notes in the Apple Notes app on a laptop or phone. If I need to draw something I use Microsoft OneNote. Then I do a screen and paste into Apple Notes: D. He also often saves various things on the phone's calendar. I like to have notes available on every device at all times.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think taking notes helps us remember things being saved. I definitely think the notes are very useful to me. I take notes on the computer because if I make a mistake somewhere I can change it quickly. In addition, such notes are always available and weigh nothing. They also do not take up so much space in your purse. Electronic notes are more useful for the environment and so do not litter.
1. Yes, I do, however not so often. I used to take a lot of handwritten notes on the earlier years of studying, but now they are not so useful anymore. I like to solve math exercises on paper – it helps me concentrate and imagine the problem. If I take any notes during my work, I do it by creating quick “sticky notes” or text files which are then deleted in most cases, because I haven’t used them for a very long time.

2. Yes, I use OneNote, but never “live”. I use it to store and organise information, but as a tool for taking note during lectures – it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe that’s because I am not able to write without looking at the keyboard, but I can handwrite without looking at the paper.

3. I think that people do memorise more if they handwrite instead of typing. It is especially important in school, when we use those notes to learn. It is pretty common that we remember more information if we make a handwritten note apart from just reading the lectures before the exam. In short term we can even remember the moment of writing those things. Typing is good for quick information exchange, but not necessarily for learning.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
No, I don't take notes at university or work, because we have basic materials from platforms for both study and work, so I basically don't need extra notes. but sometimes I will take notes during everyday duties.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
No, I don't have this habit for university or work, and I take notes usually for hobbies such as music, so I just take note by writing in notebook.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think people should do more handwriting than typing, especially for the people whose mother language is a language with complex characters, as for me, I would forget some Chinese character if I don't write for a long time.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I don't take notes in college because it distracts me. Surprisingly, the situation in my personal life and at work looks different. On a daily basis I do a lot of notes about important things as well as crap.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes, I use many of these types of applications depending on the device I work on. I use both notifications and notes on my phone, but I also use the simple "Word" on the computer.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
In my opinion, taking notes is helpful and allows us to remember a lot of things that would otherwise be out of our minds.
On the other hand, handwriting has never made me remember anything better or faster, so it's no good for me to learn this way.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, absolutely, making notes, writing everything down, doodling or drawing while listening or thinking is picture of whole my life. It helps me focus and remember things and organize knowledge. After a while I can always come back to my notes or drawing and recall some informations.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes and I am a big fan of such apps. I can express myself artistically or practice my drawing skills or make quick notes. Information made by hand are more personal and recalling knowledge.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I asked Santa for graphics tablet which would let me do such notes and let me draw whenever I want. I prefer hand writing from tapping and I'm glad technology starts to appreciate it more nowadays and for example they put scriber included with phone or tablet.

1. I used to take notes at lectures. It helped me a lot to study later learning material. Now when there are very little lectures, I don't often take notes. If I do, I mostly take do it on the phone or laptop.

2. When I take notes on laptop I usually use Microsoft Word or Notepad while on the phone I use Samsung Notes.

3. I agree that handwriting positively affects the brain that memorizes learning material faster. It also helps to concentrate and practise equal attention.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?

Currently, I don't have many lectures, although, I used to take plenty of notes at the university.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?

I use an app for grocery shopping, it is easier for me to mark the items I already have and it brings the ones I still need to find at the top of the list. It is easier than carrying a pen around and crossing out the items.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?

I don't agree with everything said in the study. I prefer to make notes on the computer, it lets me include the photos or reference links directly into my notes. However, when I'm getting ready for the test I study by handwriting the essentials. I would say it is more personal then showed in the article. Also, typed in notes have fewer mistakes and the issue of my bad handwriting is no longer valid.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I don't have so many lectures in my last semester, since I don't usually even bring my notebook with me anymore. But in my work, I note all my duties.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes, I take my notes in notion.so for my work and personal, it's increase my productivity during the day.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I believe that it is truly regular that we recall more data in the event that we make a written by hand note separated from simply perusing the talks before the test. In transient we can even recall the snapshot of composing those things. Composing is useful for speedy data trade, however not really for learning. As I would see it, taking notes is useful and enables us to recall a great deal of things that would some way or another be insane. Then again, penmanship has never caused me to recall that anything better or quicker, so it's horrible for me to become familiar with that way..

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?

Oh yes! I do it on the daily basis. During my university times at veterinary taking notes was a vital part of my studying process. It made it easier for me to remember things, it reduced study time and made it easy to recall specific topics during the exams. It also helps mew plan things throughout the day. I write them on post-it notes and things just … stay in my head as soon as my eyes read them from this piece of paper.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?

No, I’m definitely “traditional” kind of person and prefer to take all the notes by hand. It’s kind of a guilty pleasure for me to write down the notes, rewrite them if necessary, use different pens, highlighters, drawings. While using the computer apps of any sort I don’t have that kind of personal connection with my scribbles which makes it harder for me to remember them.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?

I think taking notes helps arrange thoughts and focus on important things, it can help to point out all the problems and worries, and let go of all the bad, negative emotions. You can use them in practical, scientific manner or create journal of some sort to help you not only remember new topics and subjects but also let go of all the problematic thoughts in your head. Nevertheless, I think the privacy, that taking handwritten notes is significantly more valuable than typing speed, that computer ensures.

Yes, almost everything, especially the important stuff.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I'm trying different apps, for that moment I don't find yet best option for me.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
In my opinion, handwritten ones are very useful only because the last n years people have been developing their brains in this direction. Everything is changing now, and it seems to me that if people continue to digitize everything, in a few generations typing will be no less useful for the brain.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
At university, in class I very rarely take notes now. Since teachers submit material digitally and fairly quickly. I do not have time to take written notes, but I can also open a lecture on a computer at any time, because they upload their lectures in digital form. But in everyday life, I quite often use notes to distribute responsibilities or to plan tasks for work.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes, usually, I use the Notes app on my smartphone and laptop. But besides this, I also take notes on paper, I have several notebooks that I often use. It helps a lot in everyday life.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
In general, I agree with the research which showed good results for students taking notes. I experienced this on myself. Our brain is so designed that it has several options for remembering information. When we make additional notes, we make our brain activate additional methods of storing information and as a result, it is very useful and effective.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I usually take notes at work and during everyday activities. At university, I don't have to take notes because the entire transcript is usually made available by the lecturer, so I don't want to waste time writing and focus more on listening to what the teacher has to say. When it comes to notes at work, I usually write them in a simple notebook on a laptop that I can always look at and remember what I was supposed to do. The same is for everyday duties - I write all keywords in my phone's calendar, then I catch the context myself.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
No, I've never used any additional reminder or memorization applications. Usually, all I need is a plain, empty worksheet in which I can write keywords, and as soon as I read them, the context for the given action automatically appears in my head. Sometimes notes require more detailed descriptions, but that's not a problem.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think that there is actually a significant difference when writing notes yourself on a piece of paper and saving them in a notebook on some device. I can even give myself as an example here. Every time I save something on my phone, I always have to go back to where I saved it and read all the items on the list to remember absolutely everything. It never happens that all the information is in my head until I read it again and again. However, if I write them down by hand on a piece of paper, then the information gets in my head and I don't have to reach for the piece anymore. I think that visual memory is also important here, which allows us to distinguish the real list of duties from the virtual one.
Yes, I often take notes. They especially help me to study and at work. The form of notes I currently prefer is to tap them on a computer - I use several devices every day, which is why I prefer to keep all data in the cloud so that I can access them from any device. In the past I wrote much more in a notebook, but over time I involuntarily started using the computer. I usually don't use any special applications you mentioned in the movie, just a regular notebook.
According to last question, I think calligraphy is becoming less and less important and people will lose their writing ability. We will tap everything on the computer, because it is convenient, legible and ecological - we save paper.

1. Notes are the most important thing in learning, in my opinion. Without them it's hard to possess serious knowledge.
2.No, i rather prefer handwritten notes
3.If someone likes it and helps it, I think it is needed. At the same time, however, you should take care of the handwriting, which in my opinion is much more convenient. No telephones or computers are needed.

1. I do when I absolutely have to – I depend on my memory more, noting just some necessary complex things that are easy to mix up. I perceive by ear more than by eye that’s why I am always grateful when the notes are already prepared by a teacher or the other presenter and I can concentrate on listening and understanding.
2. No, just the standard note application where I can tick and untick my grocery list :)
3. That’s nice people have more and more means to help them in everyday and professional life – now you have applications for almost everything and these apps have their grateful audience, now even more conservative people can use a more compact and useful tablet or smartphone instead of notebook.

1. Yes, I do. In my opinion note-taking is important, because it help us focus and concentrate when we reading or listening. Moreover it help me acquire knowlenge quicker and more effectiv. In addition I make notes to write down my duties, shopping list or my ideas.

2. I use notebook in my phone, it's great place to make a notes, especially when I don't have paper close at hand. In addition I use Google Calendar in order to plan my week and remember what to do. I think that this app is great, because it is predictable and helps me arrange a shedules.

3. While typing is faster and more convenient method to take notes research say that writing by hand is definietly betttter, because it improves our memory. Moreover when we write by hand we boost our brain and develop understanding.
1. I do not take as many notes as I wish I did. I find them very helpful but I often forget to take them when I need it.

2. I do use Google Keep to store most of my notes.

3. Generally, I agree that handwriting is more efficient in terms of focusing on the subject, however in my case, writing in cursive means that I have to put extra focus on writing in cursive itself.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I take notes on lectures at my university and sometimes at work when I need to imagine something or understand programming structures better.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Sometimes I use Google Calendar. As I mentioned before I do take notes but I have to admit I am not doing this as often as I should. Especially when it comes to my studies.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
There is certainly some truth to it. Personally when I am preparing myself for exam I prefer to make my notes with pen than to write it on PC. I think I memorize much more when I write it myself without using a computer.

I rarely take notes by hand, but for me handwritten notes are more memorable, and mostly I use handwriting when I need to memorize something, for example when I have to prepare for the test or exam, or when I create something new and I have to organize my thoughts. At work I use Microsoft calendar, for little things I use simple Notes app on my phone. From my opinion taking notes is especially helpful when you are overtaken with information and cannot remember everything at once.
1. Honestly I don't remember when was the last time I took any notes at uni. Right now I tend to make notes at job, hand writing them makes them easier to memorize.

2. No I don't use any apps, just good old pen and paper or notepad on PC

3. Typing on computer is much faster and easier, but it's less helpful. Most of the time I forgot what I was typing on PC while I still remember what I wrote on typical pen and paper note. Classic way of taking notes forces us to think more and thanks to that it is easier to memorize everything.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?

Of course, I take notes every time I want to learn something. Both at work when I learn new tools and at university when a topic interests me to better remember it and then learn more.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?

For daily notes and a list of things to do I usually use Google Keep. When it comes to some more complicated things, I use OneNote. Of course, I also use classic notebooks.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?

I agree with the statements in the article. When I take handwritten notes, everything is always better remembered. I also can not imagine writing notes, for example, on the computer during lectures where you often have to be very fast and use a lot of formulas.

1. Yes, I often take notes at the university. There are times when I can just listen, and this will be quite enough, but often it is not, and I have to take notes. I also use notes in the daily routine, this helps not to forget about the things that I have planned.

2. No, I don't use any apps for notes. At home, I make notes on colored stickers, and at university I write in a regular notebook and make photos, in case I lose or forget it.

3.I believe that making notes is very useful for everyone and at any age. Notation can be done for everything, except of something very personal, because then someone can see it and use it. Like personal diaries, but they are no longer popular.
Regarding handwriting or typing, I prefer handwriting. Modern society has become a victim of technology. The Internet, social networks, virtual reality, and so on, have completely engulfs us. Therefore, if there is an opportunity to do something with my own hands, I'll do it, even if it is such an insignificant trifle, and also if there is an opportunity to talk with a person a live, instead of writing messages I'll use it.

2. No, not really, though they seem to be an interesting alternative to what I usually do while taking notes.

3. To me taking notes is taking notes. It doesn't matter if done by handwriting or typing. Whatever suits a person the most and is easier to do is simply fine.

Of course, I take notes at university. Sometimes I am preparing some notes during everyday chores. And at work I did them because I had to or it was requested. But I enjoyed it anyway, because it helped me in not loosing my mind during my working hours.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?

One app that I am using is Google Keep. I keep there my short notes which mainly consist of planning something, not forgetting some important events or things and general random stuff.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?

In my case, taking notes by hand is less efficient but more knowledgable because I am typing faster on keyboard rather than writing things on paper, but I am more focused while I write something on paper, so if I would like to memorise something I would definitely choose to write rather than typing.

1. At school – not, I`m listen very attentively and trying to understand. It`s my way to study. But I providing a diary, of course, by hand-writing. Not a little girl`s diary, I don’t speak to the book )) just only notes there what I should do on some date, and main things what I`ve done. It helps not to get lost in duties.
2. Never. Only some time lines in MS Excel.
3. I think it is question of what is more convenient. When I`m studying, I use different copy books or pieces of paper, and sometimes it becomes too difficult to find where are “legs”, ”hands” and “body”) So, in this case, it is better to stick a structured way, and it is easier to achieve with some devise.

In general, I don't often take notes, mostly I try to memorize everything. But if I want to make a note then I prefer analog means, because electronics is very unreliable, it can discharge at an inappropriate moment, it can delete some data, or not save ... in general many problems with this, and the paper is small and always at hand
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes, I have a notepad on my phone, but I rarely use it and write down not very important information there that I can forget and if something goes wrong with the program and I cannot read it then nothing bad will happen
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
In general, this is an important topic today, because with the development of technology, humanity begins to lose some of their natural skills, because technology replaces them with theirs functions, but as we know nature never gives anything to creatures without reason. So technology at some point in our development can just play an evil joke with us. and I think this topic is a good reason to think if technologies are so necessary for humans and whether they should occupy such an important place in our lives.

Hi Angelika, thanks for your comment.

I can't really understand why it's hard for you to take notes on university but at work it seems much easier to you. You don't get distracted at work while taking notes? Or maybe it's because you take them on computer and given the fact that typing on keyboard is faster than hand writing, especially when you remember where each letter is on the keyboard, you seem to be more focused on the topic of the notes rather than the writing itself? Also, if you could tell what apps you exactly use on daily basis? Thanks

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?

I do. I must say, I do it quite frequently. Reason behind doing it is that I find handwritten notes to be more useful than digital notes. I think that apart from what was already said in the article, another important factor is that you can go with them out of frame. You aren't restricted by formatting, therefore you can add side notes, drawings and anything that will help you with saving informations quickly.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes i use them. Mostly because i work on laptop and sometimes i can't get my hands on pen & paper when i need to take notes.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think that there is place for both type of notes. It all depends what you need.
1. There is no many situations in my everyday life when I really need to take notes. Mostly it's something like list for grocery shopping. And if I need to remember things it's more like marking dates in calendar with hour of meeting written in the corner or something like that. Talking about university, I last took notes on first year. Since then knowledge is much more practical for me and I learn by using informations i get up to date.

2. I'm generally not using many apps at all. As I remember correctly last one that was reminding me about anything was the one where you care of virtual plant to keep it in good health (and generally alive). The main idea was to remind person using it to drink water... but it's more like digression here. It's actually quite off topic i guess. In general I prefer use pen/pencil and paper if I need to.

3. The whole topic about taking notes is very different for different people. In general we are learned in school that we need to write down everything from board. But the truth is, there is many variants for memorising informations. One person would be able to remember more by writing simple points in order, the other would prefere to hear carefully and there would be some of us who probably prefere doing some manual things like drawing for example.
1. Usually, I don't take notes, except of 'long-term things', like: writing a note in my phone to remind myself that i have to do something when i come back home. It's a good idea for reminding because i use my phone constantly so every time i unlock my phone, I see my notes

2. Yes, i do use Notes app built in my phone.

3. It is true, that when i was taking notes at the university by hand, It was much easier to learn everything at home, but i wouldn't say that it's perfect in every scenario

1. Yes, I think notes are a very important part of our day. Personally, I take them at every step only because I try not to litter my head with unnecessary information. It is better to save them and you can return to them at any time.
2. Nope, I only use a pen and paper.
3. As I mentioned in the first point, I think that the notes are very important. If we carefully plan our day and write it on a piece of paper, we can not waste a moment. This also applies to lecture notes or, in general, memorable notes to learn.

1. Usually I don't take handwritten notes - I use smartphone for that or just remember what's "to do". The only exception is learning - I prefer to write notes by myself. I usually add some schemes or my comments - it helps me a lot. While taking notes I'm also learning, so usually I don't have to read them again later - the process of preparing them is enough to remember things.

2. Yes, I use build-in apps.

3. I was quite happy to hear that taking hand-written notes helps while studying. I always had such feeling and now it turns out that scientists share my point of view.

1. And 3.
I’m that kind of person, who likes that everything to be written. So as a result I’ve learnt to take notes whenever I need them. On the other hand, our University is specific, because everything we do is basically written on machines and for me is harder to do it on my laptop for example. I’m old school if we talk about notes – paper and pen, it’s everything I need.
2. I’m actually forced to use „Sticky notes” as it’s only well designed app for taking notes on computer. Unfortunately as I said before, I like to do it in original way. I’m also using standard notes smartphone app – I can not say nothing bad here, it does what it should.

1. Yes, I always take notes at University during the lectures, this helps me to remember better what was the lesson about. Furthermore while writing down some important information I tend to learn and make a mental note of a large part of those news and due to this I learn the for the test very quickly.

2. No I don’t use any app for taking notes. I prefer to do them on my own, by hand in my notebook. Handwritten notes are much more useful for me and also more practical because I can take my notebook everywhere with me and I don’t need wi-fi connection or signal to have access to my notes, moreover I don’t like to use electronic devices too much.

3. I think that we should take notes by hand on paper, it is not only a good way to stay alert in lectures, but also it lets us improve our orthographical skills and work at perfecting our cursive. Using too much apps which teoretically help us out to take notes, result in being passive and not even think about what we are writing down and about orthography because device will do it for us, so we don’t have to „exercise our mind” and in effect we become more and more stupid and our brains useless.

No I do not use this kind of apps.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
Taking notes may be very benefitial when one wants to remember things faster and the notes contain information which are not easily found on the internet. It is also crucial for scenarios when you want to plan something or make a todo list. In other case, it just may be a kind of waste of effort, as most of the notes are looked into once or twice and they are never used again.

Hi Cem,

thanks for your comment, I really like it since I do most of the stuff very similarly. I take notes everyday at work and it really increases my productivity and also helps me with my time management. Having everything in front of me on a piece of paper really helps me understanding what else I need to do. I know that I can make the same thing on my computer but I really have a lot on my task bar and searching for another thing to appear in front of my monitor doesn't really help and rather annoys me.
1. No, I don't make any notes. I remember everything. Besides, I have internet where I can find everything.

2. No I do not use these apps, because I think I do not need them.

3. I prefer to listen and remember on a regular basis, it's better for me than writing notes.
1. Yes, I take notes while studying and also on my calendar.

2. No, I don't use special apps for that. When I need to remember a shopping list, I write it in my phone. Walking around with a notebook or piece of paper for this is inconvenient. But during my studies, I write down the most important things in a notebook.

3. I think taking notes by hand is very useful. Everyone has long known that in this way we better remember information. So why not use this? Unfortunately, we live in a digital age, so many people forget about this advantage.

Hi Bakdaulet,

Have you tried taking notes at university? Or maybe taking it into account if you had more time? I know that materials are published regurarly but to me, having my personal notes really helps me understand things quicker, as materials published are just helpers to remind a few things. I don't know your daily schedule but as you wrote, you use notebooks for other responsibilities so maybe notes at university would also be a good practice.

Hi,

thanks for your input. I really share your opinion on the subject. I think that taking notes right now is a really rare experience if you can do everything on your computer. But when I compare my notes taken by hand and those on computer, I can see a pattern that those hand-written are more clear to me, while these on computer are just random words which are difficult to decode later
A very nice article. As for your questions. At university, I don't do it, but at work, it helps me remember and organize my thoughts. What I usually use sticky notes for applications - I stick it to the monitor. Notes are very needed because they make it easier to remember but you can also quickly get back to your thoughts. Another example is a smaller mess of thoughts. What more can you add here about notes ?! Are needed!

Hi Mykyta,

thanks for your comment. I really think the same way. Notes made by hand are more memorable in my opinion. Besides I think that having them on paper really help you while learning. They are much more practical in every day life as well - you can't open your laptop while commuting by subway for example. Of course, living in the world of cloud which allows you to store everything on multiple devices might encourage to grab your phone but to me reading notes on relatively small screen really distracts me rather than helps me with learning.

Hi Sebastian,

thanks for appreciation. Also, I like your idea of having sticky notes on your computer, I know that they are also really helpful everyday. But at first I need to go to the shop and buy them and being advanced procrastinator doesn't really help. But thanks for bringing this up, I will think about it tomorrow at work and maybe I will force myself to organise a pack of sticky notes.

1) Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, I take notes during everyday duties. I write everything I need to do to my notes on the iPhone. And, every evening, I check the notes and mark all done stuff. It helps me to remember everything I need to do during the day.
2) Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I use just a standard app on iPhone - Notes. I can edit notes here, create a folder. Or everyday notes like brushing your teeth.
3) What are your thoughts on the topic?
I've always taken notes and I'll do it. I have a bad memory, so it's hard to keep everything in my head. And notes are a great way to fix it.

1. Sometimes at university and after training I take notes.
2. If I use some app, it is usually a notebook or reminder, because these apps work on the computer and on the phone at the same time. But when I’m studying, I prefer doing nots on paper. And I still using a paper calendar.
3. The informations didn’t surprise me and I think it's true. I like making a handwrite nots because I remember better this informations. Even when you are just coping informations from presentation on paper you have more chance to remember it than you are making copy/paste on your computer.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
I'm writing when I need to solve some problem or task. It helps me to visually understand the problem and find the solution.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I use notifications, notes and calendar apps on my phone, also I use Google Docs, Sheets, etc.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I can better memorize the information if I write it, that is true. But I am sure that my skills to analyze haven't gone down because I rarely use handwriting, everything is OK.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
At university I don't really use phone or laptop for taking notes. When I happen to be on a lecture and take notes I only use a notebook. I tried using a laptop but I couldn't really focus and I would very easily forget what I just noted down. I also use hand-written notes at work for the most important things.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Not really. When I have something small to remember I just type it in the Messenger app and then take a screenshot. I know it's a bit silly, but it works for me.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think that note taking using phone applications is fine for small things like groceries list, but for more important things hand-written notes are irreplaceable.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, I do. I think I have a strong memory, but I skip things and forget if I don't take notes. So I usually try to take notes.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I usually have an advanced note application on my phone and it saves in the cloud.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
People need to use more handwriting than writing, especially for people who have a complex character of some language families.
1. Yes, I take notes very often. Most often at school during lectures and exercises as well as at work and home or while studying. I think writing notes helps me remember all the necessary information.

2. Yes I use these applications but recently I especially enjoy using the application for taking notes called "Notion". It is by far the best application of this type that I have encountered.

3. For me, writing is a crucial element in the learning process, so I think creating notes on a computer gives a lot of additional possibilities as it is definitely faster compared to writing notes on paper.

1. I take notes every day and everywhere, but handwritten notes I take only when I am solving something or learning something new.

2. I mostly use Google Docs services and Dropbox for synchronization between devices. Sometimes For quick temporary notes I often use Telegram with its "Saved messages" function.

3. Digital notes have limitations. Not every app can let you combine notes with drawings or make some specific formatting. In most cases when I need to note my thoughts or calculations, with digital apps I think HOW I need to write it and not about WHAT I need to write. But on paper I can do whatever I want and only my imagination is my limit.

1. Yes, I do. During my Bachelor’s I found out that it’s just easier to me to mesmerize if I write things down.

2. No, I don’t.

3. I think that handwriting is faster. Also I find handwriting visually appealing if you have a good handwriting.

1. I almost never do any kind of notes. If I actually do then it's more likely to be on notebook, because it is much faster.

2. Notepad++ and sublime 3

3. I didn't take much notes in my life, but I'd say that it probably helped to memorize some things, when I wrote them down. Also it doesn't really matter to me, whether it's tapped or 'handwritten"', but I see one advantage in the latter - it's easier for me to bring myself to do it, if it's some task to do.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, I do those notes to help me focus a little more on work.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I think most of us use at least one of those apps or anything similar to this question is a little bit too basic.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think people need both to get most of all but I think in the future we will use more typing than writing so we better get used to it.

1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, maybe not a lot, but if I have something that is worth to remember I usually take a note about it.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
I use simple Notes and Calendar app on my phone. Although I love using the "google assistant", I don't use it for notes. On my computer, at work I usually use notepad++ or Sticky Notes app. I rarely take notes on my computer when I'm at home because I have a whiteboard above my desk and I use it for it.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think the most important is to know when the information is worth to take note about it. Sometimes is better to listen carefully instead getting distracted by taking notes.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes of course. Although I can write pretty fast on a keyboard I prefer to take notes in analogue notebook using pen or pencil. For me it is much more faster and I can easily highlight important things or link the to one another.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
All my handwriting notes I usually move to OneNote. I write down what I put on paper and in the end I'm attaching photo of notebook just in case I forgot what was I thinking about when I wrote it.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I like the approach that smartphones and tablets are using to bring back handwriting. I can't imagine a world where kids no longer know how to write on a peace of paper instead of keyboards. As much as it is school responsibility to teach them handwriting it is also responsibility of the parents to pay attention and not allowing to much time with phone or tablet.

1) Yes, I tend to write down the general titles of the topics that are discussed. It is very helpful when you try to remember the content of the lecture. Any more than that thought takes too much attention, and it becomes hard for me to follow the contents of the lecture.
2)No, not really, I know some people who do and are perfectly happy with them, but it doesn't work out for me that well.
3)Interestingly enough, a little while ago, I started to use a stylus for handwriting on my tablet. It gives you a somewhat weird feeling at the beginning, but when you get used to it, you can, to some degree, get the best of both worlds. You get the benefits from handwriting. Also, you have your notes in an easily editable electronic form that you can access and share trough the multitude of different devices and never be bothered to carry the notebook. Another important thing is that aside from being able to share the notes through your devices, you can also share them with the people. Oftentimes, this feature turns out to be very handy.

1. Yes , sometimes, in case not lose important data, organize workflow, draw some schemas.

2. I usually use standard IOS Notes and Evernote app.

3. Taking note is a useful skill, of course, it will help you not forget important data, reproduce some processes, organize things. Also, nowadays in digital world, it's cool to make handwritten notes, I believe.

1. I very rarely take notes ...
2. Hehe ... I use a text document for notes, after which I lose it somewhere on the desktop.)
3. Well, if you take it as a whole, then really making notes by hand is more useful than just typing it all. And to choose the most valuable information is very useful.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?

Yes, I am trying to take some notes at university when it is necessary. The same cityation I have at work. When I feel, that there is too much information I am trying to take some notes.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?

Usually, I am using the standard iOS Notes app. I think there is everything that I need. Sometimes I also use Day One app, but not too often.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think, that taking notes is a useful skill. It helps us a lot and I want to improve this skill. Nowadays taking notes is pretty easy and with so much information, which we are receiving every day it should a habit, because there are too many information noises, that we can lose something important.
I don’t take notes at university, work or during everyday duties. In fact i don’t take notes almost ever. In my opinion or rather in my case, taking notes at university for example completely distract me from the topic. I can’t in the same moment focus on the lecture and take notes to it. I can either focus on writing and thinking what to write or focus on listening to the lecture and process in my head what I just heard. I can’t do both. I use only sometimes notes application on my smartphone to write down some important information that I know i can forget. But I do it very rarely. Anyway even tho I almost never note down anything when I do I use smartphone or computer to do it. I hate writing anything with my hand. And why? Answer is very simple, I write so badly that sometimes even I can’t read what i wrote so for me computers are much more convenient way to take notes.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, I use notebook and handwriting to take notes because this is convenient way for me. It is easier to remember that I wrote by hand rather type it in my phone or take a pic.
2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Well, sometimes I use in-built application like Note+ but not often using it.
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I think most of us rely on technology so we should try to not forget about casual things that we used to do. And basically handwriting is better way to remember things that you need to use later.
1. Do you take notes at university, work or during everyday duties?
Yes, I take notes very often. I prefer taking notes “manually” than “digitally”.

2. Do you use any of the apps mentioned or anything similar?
Yes, I use Apple Notes to save information that I know might be important when I don’t have my notebook.

3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
I like taking notes because it helps me organize my thoughts. It’s much easier for me to break down complex problem when I have a piece of paper and a pen, even if I’m writing single, and nonsense for the observer, words.
1. Nowadays, we use smartphones, laptops or computers in classes at the university as well as in private life or at work. It is rare now that someone walks with a notebook and a pen in a purse if you can have everything on your phone.

2. I am an IT specialist, so I use a lot of diferent application, but sometimes I try to use old, proven ways to learn, which are notes in a notebook.

3. Everything has its pros and cons. On the one hand, the multitude of applications that we have installed on our devices help us in everyday life but make us stop thinking independently.I strongly agree with the fact that taking notes makes us train our brains and remember a lot more.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
