Week 6 [18.11 - 24.11.2019] How to speak so that people want to listen

Recently I found an interesting video made by a man who is a sound and communication expert. His name is Julian Treasure and he teaches people how to speak in public and how to be excellent speakers. During his speech he describes what distinguishes terrible speaker from a good one and how to speak so that people want to listen. He explores specific characteristics both good and bad and shows a few tricks that could be used to improve communication skills. I think it is useful to reverse-engineer the communication between people as a whole and look at it from  a broader perspective. It allows to analyse what we do wrong and what we do right and maybe use some techniques to develop further.

1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
Probably I wouldn't say that about myself. Why? Probably because I am not self-confident enough and it would be difficult for me to perform in from of a large audience.

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
I hate liars and I can't understand why so many people do this so often. Also, gossips and excuses are quite annoying. Unfortunately, some of the others I could associate with myself, especially: judging, negative thinking and complaining about different things. Yes, I have a lot to improve in this aspect, but I hope I can deal with that after watching the video :)

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
Yes, I fully agree with the author and the HAIL acronym appeal to me. Especially the two first letters, as I think that honesty and authenticity are truly important and they are important both in maintaining relationships with other people and developing our career.
1. If I prepare my speech in advance, I think I am pretty good at speaking considering the fact that I am not a professional. I used to lead a science club at previous university, and I had to make speeches pretty often. It depends actually on the language, because I consider my English speeches as mediocre, even though my colleagues say otherwise to cheer me up. Unprepared Polish speech has a little chance to be good, but unprepared English speech is always a showcase of lack of vocabulary. Also, it is worth to mention that I am able to speak loudly. Some people feel restrained and speak quietly even in small groups, especially shy ones, but despite being shy myself, I don’t have such trouble.

2. Actually, I’ve never really paid attention to those aspects he described. There are things which annoy me even worse and these are constant looking at the screen, covering the mouth, or making simple, but common language mistakes, for example pronouncing years incorrectly by using ordinal number for thousands. (“Dwutysięczny piąty” instead of “Dwa tysiące piąty”) It drives me nuts and even some journalists speak like this.

3. I have never heard about those qualities and certainly didn’t know about such English words 😊
1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
I consider myself good but not briliant. I do not have problem with public speeches but everytime I plan ahead what Im going to say, I end up doing it differently but that's not only my problem as i know ;)

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
It's gonna be lying. I never do it and do not understand why people lie to each others.

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
Slowly and loudly speaking. Yes I agree.
1. I don't consider myself that I am a good speaker because public appearances stress me a lot. I am a shy person and I have a lot of difficulties in such situations to remain calm and speak in accordance with the rules of good speech, because usually stress takes control over me.

2.
All seven habits are definitely negative and should not be used, but personally I am most annoyed by complaining. It is a general problem for people, because it is usually easier to complain than to praise. We literally complain about everything, we prefer to see the disadvantages instead of the advantages and this is very unpleasant. Regardless of age, we should start seeing the world in colorful colors and go through life with a positive attitude.

3. Of course I agree with that. A good speaker should definitely have these qualities. However, honesty is always the most important thing for me. It is the basis in any conversation or relationship. Honesty builds trust and even love. Truth and honesty defend themselves and they are so powerful.

1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
I don't think I'm a good speaker. Unfortunately, I'm very stressed by speeches in front of a bigger audience and I usually start to speak very quickly. Additionally, I have been wearing my braces for a long time, which makes my diction not the best.

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
I don't like people who complain the most, I'm so irritated. I always try to be smiling and optimistic about the world, and such people ruin everything. Unfortunately, the majority of the society has it and usually conversations with them put you in a very similar depressive state.

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
I strongly agree with the qualities of good speaker that have been presented in the video. I think the most important thing is the authenticity of the speech, if you convince your audience to your knowledge, they will listen to you all the time. I think it's also important to tone your voice well and speak loud and clear.
1. Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?

I'm definitely not a good speaker, I'm not self-confident enough. I try to practice it all the time, and I hope that it will allow me to be much better at it someday. I also like to watch such performances to learn techniques that I can use in my presentations.

2. Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?

A negativity will probably be the one that annoys me the most. Just as complaining is our national sport. It is difficult to get something constructive by complaining and having a negative approach to everything.

3. Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?

I agree with the author. All these qualities are very important to me (although the acronym HEIL is not very well associated in historical terms).
Honesty: Be true, straight and clear in what you say.
Authenticity: Be yourself.
Integrity: Be your word. Do what you say. Be someone you can trust.
Love: Wish others well.

1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
I definitely do not. During presentations for example I rarely say all information I want and I often have problems with explaining things to the listeners.

2. Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
I think it would be complaining. I just can't stand people doing that and I try to not to talk with people with this habit. One habit that I can associate with myself is judging. I am unfortunately doing that in every occasion and it is something I must fight with inside me.

3. Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
I do, and apropos this topic I would like to recommend the speech of Proffessor Bralczyk: "Jak mówić aby nas słuchano". Its really amazing how the describes the problem there. For me always the most important aspects of the speech were authenticity, dinamics and brevity.

1. I don't consider myself as a good speaker. Speaking in front of a group of people makes me stressed and I can feel that my voice is shaking and I easily loose track of what I want to say next. I'm always afraid that my nervous state is eye catching and my whole presentation is a disaster.

2. Most of them are annying for me but I will go for a gossip to be my number one. I truly hate it, it's such a waste of time and can be very hurtful for others. Espescially when a gossip is fake.

3.I consider them as generally good qualities, but I'd reccomend matching our speech techiques with the audience. It's the most important factor, in the end presentation should be intresting for the listeners.
1. Hmm interesting question, I think I am a good speaker. And why do I think so? I think I have a lot of persuasion,
rhetoric. I can also listen to what seems important to me as being a good speaker

2. Probably the most lie, in my opinion no one likes to be cheated

3. I think that speaking slowly is a great advantage of being a good speaker

1. I do not consider myself a good speaker. Unfortunately, I stutter very often and I lose interest in the interlocutor.
2. I'm most annoyed about hearing negative things. The speaker automatically puts me in his mood, which makes me nervous all day.
3. Yes, I agree with the author about the qualities of a good speaker. Every word hidden under the acronym HEIL fits perfectly to a good speaker.

1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
I don't think so. Saying something in front of big public is driving me crazy and if it's not a public speech it's also a disaster.

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
Lie and negativity. I feel bad if someone always tells how bad this life and everything around.

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
I like when people are calmed down and speak without rush. HEIL is really good for me and also measured, and not loud.
1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
I think I'm a good speaker. I participated in several pieces of training. In addition, I often have to speak and talk to clients. Practice makes me better and better.

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
one of the bad habits I don't really like is lying. I hate it when others do it.

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
Yes, I fully agree with the author of the film about the characteristics of a good speaker. I think that by far the most important features are honesty and authenticity.
1. I do not consider myself a good speaker. I feel stressful every time i have to present something or speak in public and that's what impacts my overall performance.

2. Complaining and excuses annoy me the most, usually one comes from another. People always complain when they're too lazy to do something with the things that they're annoyed by.

3. Yes, I do agree with him. The most valuable in my opinion is honesty, because with that, we avoid misunderstanding from different sources

1.Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
No unfortunately i don't i am kinda introvert in social so that's makes my public speaking is low level advantage, that's not actually only about being shy but when you want to talk in public the words are becoming harder to get spilled.

2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
Lying for sure.

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
yes i do, the slower you speak the best talk you make because you have time to think before you speak :)
1. I consider myself a good speaker, but many people are far superior to me in this. I try to talk so that my interlocutor was pleased to communicate with me. But I'm afraid to speak in front of many people.

2. To be honest, I am annoyed by all the habits described in the video. It irritates me when the interlocutor lies, exaggerates, or constantly justifies himself. But I'm irritated by dogmatism most of all. Sometimes I notice that I can be too negative, or I can be constantly dissatisfied with something.

3. Yes, I agree. I think the most important thing is love. You need to wish others only good and be positive, then others will treat you like that.
Do you consider yourself a good speaker? Why?
Not really, I don't like to speak much. Of course it depends also where and for what reason. For example I might be good at speaking to audience in seminarium or in some presentations. But if we talk about face to face contact then I have some doubts about it.
2.Which of the bad habits described in the video annoys you the most? Is there any that you associate with yourself?
If somebody shy away from the conversation and ignores!
3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?
Yes the speaker represented most important qualities that each person should have I think. And of course I agree that you need to be precise and slow for illustration of your thoughts and ideas

1. I'm not a very good speaker at all. Mainly because I always don't know how to say what I need to say, sometimes I repeat Myself and over time my gestures become more and more rapid and chaotic.

2. I definitely hate liars and people who gossip. They make me mad. I think that people who excuse a lot are annoying.
Unfortunately, negative thinking and complaining about different things strictly describe me in most situations.

3. I completely agree with the author's acronym. I mostly appreciate authenticity, because it is a rare phenomenon nowadays.
I don't think I am a good speaker as I believe this skill should be professionally taught. People on TV, journalists, reporters, narrators are taught to do public speeches. Even lecturers at universities are qualified for that. But from my side I am not that type of person. There are many bad habits as touching the face, not associating with emotions of the speech which I think I possess when I speak on public. The qualities of good speaker are listed very well, but as for me the most important one is the experience

3.Do you agree with the author of the video about the qualities of a good speaker? Which of them do you value the most?

1. It really depends on my mood. There are times when I can talk and see myself as a person who can persuade anyone. However, sometimes I fell such submission that I'm can do a lot of things without even arguing. No matter what mood I have, my fear of public speaking is always with me unfortunately.

2. Exaggerations are things which makes me see red. Whenever I hear someone exaggerates in such obvious way, he may as well be ready to tell me the truth. I don't really get why people do it. I mean, I know the purpose, I just can't see any point.

3. As you may come to conclusion after 2. post, I really admire when someone is authentic. I think nowadays people put on themselves masks, by which they want to be seen as someone else, but at the same time are really obvious even to strangers. It's important to me when I know person is honest and not testing new mask on me.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
