Week 9 [28.05.2018-03.06.2018] How does the time pass?

We often don't think about the passing time. Sometimes, when we talk with our friends we argue which event happened earlier, or we realize that our memories of shared experiences, for example  from high school stories, are flawed.
The same goes with our perception of the timing of historical events. Let's watch this interesting video from a great educational channel called "Kurzgesagt" - it will help us organize our picture of past events and distances between them.

Questions:
1. Do you feel that your high school years happened years ago or do you feel like it was yesterday?
2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?

Comments

I personally don’t believe in time. Imagine looking at something. Is it actually happening right now? NOPE. All the things you can see have already happened. When did they happen? It depends how far the object is located. If you could place a giant mirror on the Moon, what would you see? Speed of light equals ca. 299 792 km/s. The Moon is located 384 400 km away from Earth. To measure the latency, we need to double that distance and divide it by the speed. The result equals 2.5 seconds. It means that you could observe things that happened 2.5s ago – things in the past. But the Moon is just a beginning. As the Universe is infinite (and keeps expanding), there are many objects located farther from Earth, which brings the possibility to observe even earlier events from them. This brings us to the conclusion – what is ‘now’?

Good point, you should also take into account that your brain processes input with some delay - what you experience as happening right now actually interacted with your senses a while ago. This is especially weird when you don't act fast enough and then wonder why a given thing happened.

Every time I think about it I feel changes in time differently, maybe it happens mostly because of various phases in my daily routine. In fact, many psychologists believe that our perception of time can vary depending on changes in mood, activities, and lifestyle.
For certain I think that Internet was a good invention. Because of world wide web, it became much easier and faster to look up for information and learn new things. Thanks to the internet we have access to various online courses that can significantly boost and speed up the process of learning.
I would not say that I've learned something new after watching this video.
The first comment changed my mind about the time. I have never even thought about that but it really makes sense. How far behind can we drop in. Of course it’s limited but just imagine if we could place this giant mirror somewhere father so that we could have seen what was some million years ago but we had to wait until light comes back to us for years. Coming back to the question I feel like school years were long time ago and it’s still hard to realize that it’s over.

Of course, internet was a good invention. There are innumerous advantages of this invention and I don’t want to write it down. If you don’t know how to manage your time you will most probably waste it even without internet.

I can’t say that this information was new for me. I have heard all these facts for lots of time but this video presented them all in a more pleasant way for my eyes.

1. I think that I remember my school years only from class 7, but it was 10 years ago, that's why a lot has changed since that time, but it was not so long ago that I can even recall some separate situations from school life.
2. The Internet is a super invention! Although sometimes it seems to me that I would like to live in the early 20th century, just for the sake of experiment. Of course, the Internet accelerates the development, modern children already at a young age can use the technology and the Internet without problems. The Internet provides millions of opportunities for the training and development of society. The older generation is not all can appreciate these opportunities and I'm sorry that this is so.
3. I guess I learned some new information, but I learned all the information in the school from the lessons of geography, biology, history. Probably only it would be very interesting for me to get into the future. At least 200 years ahead, but there is only the opportunity to live in the present and come up with either a time machine or how to make people immortal)

True, also take into account that your perception of time changes as you age - one year means much more to you when you're six than when you're sixty. It's called Webber's law I think.
Unknown said…
Agreed, for example, right know you can study more efficiently thanks to the internet so you have more time to waste (as well on the internet ;) )

Yes, there are so many exciting inventions to be made, can't wait for it to happen!

My high school was quite a long time ago but my studies have passed very quickly. I am in the last year of master's studies and I'm a little sad that it's over. But on the other hand, I have had enough of this school. I think that the internet is a brilliant invention, if it wasn't for the Internet, I would never have finished this school. But something strange is happening nowadays with the internet. People no longer have any control over it.
Unknown said…
It's natural to feel years now as going at a faster rate then you felt at school. And I think in the end of your life it wouldn't matter that much of how many years you lived rather how many memories of epic moments do you have.
Internet is for sure the greatest invention of our time. So much cool things we have today wouldn't be possible if not for the internet.

I do not have much memory since high school. But the same little memories seem very clear. The Internet is very useful for people who live far away from their families, because they have made communication much faster. The facts are transmitted much faster, the facts are not just about the TV or the redio, any one can be a presenting or displaying subject. There are many job opportunities. For example, I'm still a member of the internet with my high school friends and talk about the past memories.

1. Do you feel that your high school years happened years ago or do you feel like it was yesterday?
It really depends on the day I have. When it is dull and slow, I think that I've finished high school few weeks ago, but when it is full of events and rapid, I don't even think about such far away in time milestones like high school.

2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
I think it is a one of the best and biggest inventions of all time. It is totally up to you how you use it. Some use it as a tool to speed some things up or acquire some knowledge and some can waste their time all day long.

3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?
I was familiar with the video before, so unsurprisingly I wasn't surprised watching same stuff again.

Of course the Internet was a good invention. It’s a endless knowledge depository. For sure it did speed up our development.
I've seen this video before, so I wasn’t surprised watching it again ;).

I guess in majority of cases I feel like my school days happened years ago, but sometimes when I meet my friends from school I remember good old times like as if it was yesterday. I think internet was a good invention because it opens up lots of opportunities in front of us. I would like to try to study in a modern school with entertaining lessons that would have used brand new technologies.

I feel like it's already been ages since I was in the high school. It's not really the matter of time itself, but it's more or less because so many major things have happened in my life since then. I feel like I'm not the same person that I was, back then.
I think that the internet is an invention that speeds up the development of many things which could someday become necessary to our survival as a human race. As it was mentioned in the video, our home planet isn't likely to be habitable forever and we have to find some other ways of surviving. As it comes to my own life, I think that it's excellent since it helps me in my everyday life as well as gives me something to work on. That's connected to what I do for my living, after all.
I don't think that anything in the video has surprised me since I've already put my interest into the topic of universe a long time ago. Once again, I really recommend to watch "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" conducted by the famous astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
I feel that my school years were like it was yesterday and i can't believe that i'm finishing university in 1 year. Definitely i would say that internet was a good invention and thanks to it we are not so dumb as we can be. Using internet is not a 100% of development, but also a degradation too. Too much not needed information kids can find when they are surfing through the internet. I saw this video before, so it didn't suprise me in a big way.

Heh, I really feel like school happened years ago)
I think that internet was a good invention, just some people(me as well) don't know how to use it properly. So it may speed our development up or waste time depending on how we use it.
Not that much)

I feel that my high school was recently but I can't say that it was yesterday. After graduation, I have made my wishes, complete a lot of plans and I have memories from that time. That's why I feel that high school happened years ago. In my opinion Internet is the best thing in the world. There is everything what you need. Of course, I think that is a good invention but.. you have to be careful. There is a lot of bad things like viruses and any other dangerous situations which you can meet while surfing in the Internet. It can be waste of time but only when you don't know what do you want to do. About video? It's not something new for me so I can't say that surprised me.

1. Do you feel that your high school years happened years ago or do you feel like it was yesterday?
Some memories from high school feel like years ago (which is true) and some feel like it was yesterday.

2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
Both. It accelerated invention progress, especially in IT, but it made much more timewasters available on demand. But it made much more workplaces as well.

3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?
No, but there wasn't the fun fact about Cleopatra - she lived closer to the Moon landing than building Great Pyramids.

1. Do you feel that your high school years happened years ago or do you feel like it was yesterday?
It depends on my mood, I guess. Sometimes I feel like it was gazillions years ago and sometimes I feel back in the shoes of a high school student, remembering all the fun stuff that I did during that time.

2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
More and more often I realize that it is more of a time consumer than a great invention. It offers too many ways to kill time for to be able to resist it and focus on the blessing it has brought. But I guess things like that happen with all great powers and invention - if you don't know how to use it properly - it corrupts you.

3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?
It surprised me that it was further away in the timeline from the Romans to the Ancient Egyptians than to us.
Sometimes I have nostalgia about the past but I don't have this feelings like yesterday I finished school or something like this. It’s really dreary video because just some times before we had a big bang and tomorrow our life can stop exist. I’s really scared about this. I can say in case of internet - every medal has its reverse, why? Because today we can have all much easier and faster then hundred years before, but nevertheless we have PR which watch and have some functions as CCTV.

Do you feel that your high school years happened years ago or do you feel like it was yesterday?
I feel like was years ago maybe because I was in the different city then. And maybe that was really many years ago.
Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
The internet is the greatest invention of all time in my opinion. It increased speed of development because years before people wait for letter from other country months, right now there are seconds.
Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?
Yes a lot of, mostly that about time relativity between some events. I never think about history in that way.

I feel like my high school years happened years ago. And I like it. I prefer my current, student live.
If it comes about internet i think that it's good invention. It help us make thing faster. Development is good for humans. Of course, always we can find people who are wasting time. But also we can say that wasting time is a relative concept.
I don't think that this video suprised me or give me new information but it was worth to see.
I feel that my school years happend a long time age, because from that time i changed a lot as a person and not only physically. Any technology is good, the people who use it may have bad intentions. Internet gives endless possibilities that have never ever been presented to any human being before, but if a person decides to use it to watch some meemz it is it's own decision and not the "evilness" of a technology. The information is not wery surprising, i think that all people do reflect on these thing from time to time, i know i am.

I totally feel like high school was yesterday and can't understand how it is impossible that this time ended like 5 years ago. It is very depressing when you think about it, so I try not to.
Internet, like most of new inventions, can be used in good or bad way, it is all up to you.
I love this series of videos and after watching every one I am very surprised.

Yeah, sometimes I get that feeling - I know that my highschool was only 3 years ago, but it feels like a decades. i bearly remember particular days, but fortunatelly I do remember the greates moments, or the most emotional.
I think that internet was the biggest game changer in history, it gave people free access to any information, it helped communicate quicker. It only waste our time when we decide to waste our time.
I can’t really say that informations conteined in this video was new for me. I know these facts, but this video presented them in non traditional way, good job ;)

I feel that it was yesterday :). Beautiful times have passed too soon.

Of course it is a good invention. I can find everything on the internet. It depends on who uses the internet, because we can also be on facebook for a whole day.

Anything information not surprised me. However, the movie itself looked very nice to me.
Unknown said…
Yes, that is true, for example I have heard about an AI that has been trained by reading twitter comments and in a few hours the machine became racist.
Unknown said…
I completely agree, all in all the most important are the memories that we gain from all of the events - especially that we tend to forget bad moments more easily :)

I actually feel like high school was more years earlier than it really was, probably because a lot have changed during studying in PJATK. It depends on a person if the internet speed up development or makes us waste too much time. However, for us it definitely helped studying and getting knowledge needed for courses in our school. This video wasn't something new for me as I was aware how our lifespan is insignificant in comparison to the history of the universe.
Unknown said…
Yes, but paradoxically - right now its easier to verify information that we get, but most of the people don't bother to do this, so it's easy to create fake news.
Unknown said…
That means that you memorized everything on the first go, good for you! I usually forget stuff much more easily ;)
Unknown said…
For me high school was the best time of my life, I feel like so many things happened back then!
Unknown said…
I remember that in my middle school teachers often had a hard time using laptops so I guess that any more novel technology wouldn't be of much use for them :D

Like it was yesterday.
2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?
Its part a waste of time and part good information transfer.
3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?
I’m not suprised but it’s a good interesting video

I feel like my school years were yesterday but I am concious that it was 3 years ago. I don't want to back to this time because I am glad that I am in this point of my life.

I think that the Internet was a good invention and it speed up our development. Of course it can be also use against another people but it is very similar to inventions like a dynamite or a nuclear energy.

I feel like it was yesterday, but actually a lot of time passed. I miss those years, but I am also happy with my life right now.

2. Do you think that the internet was a good invention - does it speed up our development or does it make us waste too much of our time?

I think it was great. It thought me a lot of things, which normally I wouldn't know. Internet is a very good thing when you know how to use it.

3. Did any of the information from the video surprise you in any way?

No, but it was a very good video

I feel like high school was like yesterday and then I think that time goes really to fast. Or maybe when I have a baby and I remember being pregnant and now my son is one year and 9 months , crazy time. Its part a waste of time because now there are movies, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook that are wasting our time but internet has a good part and has a lot of useful information's that help people in daily life. I’m not surprised but it’s a good and interesting video.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
