Week 9 [28.05.2018-03.06.2018] Are you a giver or a taker?


In every workplace, there are three basic kinds of people: givers, takers and matchers. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant breaks down these personalities and offers simple strategies to promote a culture of generosity and keep self-serving employees from taking more than their share.

I think I'm rather a giver. I often feel bad if I take something from someone and give nothing in return, but such a situation is rare. Generally, most people have debts with me. It is claimed that karma comes back. Sometimes I think that i'm too good for people and they use it.

I think I'm more of a matcher, although I confess of being guilty of being able to use an opportunity when it's given to me. I think there is nothing wrong in accepting help from other people if they're genuine and not manipulated into doin that.
Being taker is a bad thing because it's short term - once you're discovered you're likely to receive less help.
It is very hard to improve givers' situation, the best thing you can do is to look out for them.

I don't think I can say unambiguously whether I am a donor or a recipient. I think that when I have and can, I give. And as they give me, I take it and I think everyone does it.
I think that people who only take, one day will have to give something anyway, that is life. As the proverb goes: karma will come back. Personally, I don't know how to improve the results, I just think that karma will help them.

As for me, I consider myself as a giver. However, if I feel that I am giving more and someone notoriously uses it, then I enter the matcher mode.
I believe that being a taker is a cold calculation and use of other people.
I think that givers are often unable to describe how valuable they are and how much they contribute to the project. I think it is worth appreciating the work of such people at least thanks for their work.

I would describe myself as a matcher. Have strong feeling of fairness and truly agreed with the speaker when he sad that have temptation to punish takers)
I believe that each of us have egoism inside them but if you thinks that world own you something for me that would mean that you simply don't understand how world works.

I am more giver than taker, but I think that matcher fits best to me. I feel huge satisfaction of giving other people help. However I do expect a return of favor, which is usually a sign for me that this person values our common acquaintance. True takers are bad for me. They cannot be trusted and it is very hard to cooperate with them, however I very rarely meet that kind of people. We can prevent givers from getting poor performance by focusing more on healthy team building practices.

I can consider myself as a matcher, I prefer when everything is fair and everyone is happy.
It is not bad, it is just another kind of personality. After being too kind to some who didn't really appreciate it you automatically, maybe just for a while, closes yourself and stop being giver anymore. Team building to everyone! It's very important to care about people, even more when they are your workers.

I think I'm somewhere in between giver and matcher. I like my environment to be pretty fair and I dislike taking too much nor depending on others. I also like to share, though. That's the reason, why I sometimes even catch myself on giving out way too much than I am supposed to. I care about my effort being noticed by others a lot, though.
I don't really enjoy the idea of being a pure taker. In my opinion, they're not really reliable and want to be overrated at everything they do (or just being praised by the things that they've put close to none effort into.)
I think that the givers should learn how to be assertive. The empathy that many of them have is not a bad thing, but it could generate a number of issues in a day-to-day life. Especially when they're surrounded by people which would be likely to exploit who they are.
I don't really know, who i am, but in most cases i would say that i'm giver. I think, it depends on a person that i met. I would rather give more to the person or to our enviroment than to take something away. To prevent givers from getting poor performance ratings is the main problem nowadays. People don't really care about it and that is the worst thing in our society.

Probably I'm the matcher, that goes to the giver side little more. But it's something, that should be confirmed by others.

2. Is being a taker a bad thing for you? Why?
Mostly because they only care about their own job by the cost of the job of others. And this is making other people's work much harder and taking long time to finish.

3. How can we prevent givers from getting poor performance ratings?
As the Adam told - remove takers and encourage asking for constructive help. This should be sufficient and will not make people suffer from the burnout.

I am an outgoing person that try to get people to know each other and work with each other, so I am definitely a matcher. I am not such a fervent giver, because I am always afraid that I will be taken for granted and not shown gratitude. For the same reason I am not a taker - I feel uncomfortable taking things from people - it's like a debt.

2. Is being a taker a bad thing for you? Why?
Well, honestly yes. I believe in justice in every parts of life - in a couple, at school and at a workplace. If you take X, you have to give back X - whether it's to the same person, or in a different "currency", but you should give back all the good (and bad) that comes your way.

3. How can we prevent givers from getting poor performance ratings?
I think we should make them aware that they also should work on their own ratings,and try to be assertive and learn to say no from time to time.
That’s so sad for me but after watching this video I think that i’m giver. I trying to help people even when they no ask me. Being taker is not bad as being giver. But maybe it’s strange for you. I think that you need to have balance between this two points. You need to understand in which situation your help is needed. And try to hear another people. Because in our world believing in each other and mutual aid is valued.

I think that I'm matcher but it depends on situation. I like to help my teammates but if I have a bad day then I will be taker (not often!!!). To be honest, I don't like people who are only takers and time when I'm that kind of person. I think that being matcher is the most balanced situation. I have some takers in my team and helping them is not with smile on my face. About last question? Takers are problem so in my ideal world there is no one who only want to take.

I think that I am a giver. I always do my best - at school, at work and in my relationship. Sometimes I feel quite underrated, but eventually my effort pays off so I am not worried. Actually, I would be worried if I was a taker. I do not want to offend anybody, but for me takers are people who are not ambitious at all. They are focused on the least demanding solutions and it is well known that there is no gain without pain, so it is very unlikely that they will succeed. Statistics show that some of the givers do not achieve success as well. It is caused by their urge to help other people instead of doing their own responsibilities. My advice for them is not to worry about it. Just do your thing and I bet that in the end, you will be the winners.
Well, I guess that the biggest problem with being a giver is how everyone around you is constantly nagging at you that your mindset and philosophies are utopian and Marxist and that anything you do which doesn't pursue one self's best interest, in some form, is a waste of time. It makes givers burn out faster than a match in space.

I think that I am a 50/50 person. I like to give my best to people, but I also want the best from them to take. It's quite ok I think

Personally I’m more a taker i think because people give me a lot and I enjoy their kindness but then I forget to give them something back because they "don't want anything ". I don’t feel bad about it, if they want something they just need to ask me and its ok , there is nothing to be ashamed of. I am a really an honest person. not everybody accept that . Sometimes I give someone a thing but only if I have time or money . In that case right now i am broke and timeless so its hard to be giver.
