Week 9 [28.05.2018-03.06.2018] Game Jams

Have you ever heard about such a thing like game jam? The name is meant to resemble musical jams - when a  group of friends hang out in their basement to improvise and create music just for the sake of fun and exploration. But instead of (or sometimes, in addition to) guitars and microphones, game jammers bring their computers to the party. The game jam traditionally takes ca. 48 hours (Friday-Sunday) and during this time participants are supposed to create a completely new game from scratch. Usually there are no restrictions towards technologies and equipment used so one can get really creative and experiment with new ideas.

Jammers in their natural habitat [1]

Game jams gather people from many different disciplines: programmers, musicians, graphic designers etc. It’s important to cooperate and share your knowledge and skills, so that you can create unique experience. Team sizes vary from lone wolfs up to even 10 people with different level of experience: beginners can learn from their experienced colleagues.

Every game needs some music in it! [1]

It may seem nearly impossible to make a video game in just one weekend and indeed many of the started projects don’t make it to the final presentations. Nonetheless, every once in a while creators get attached to their prototype and decide to continue their work on a game after the jam ends, for example, a fairly successful Polish title SUPER HOT (https://superhotgame.com/) started out as a game jam project.

Final presentations constitute the culmination of a jam [1]

That being said, it’s really not the point of a game jam to prepare a product ready for release on the market. Jamming is a wonderful opportunity for networking with people sharing the same passion, you can learn from others - because in this rapidly developing field there is always a ton of people that know much more than you and are willing to share - and simply experiment. If you have an idea for a game that you are not so sure about, then you should participate in a jam - there will be many people willing to test your game and give you constructive feedback about it. Even if your plan doesn’t work out then at least you can spend a weekend in a fun and productive way.

Remember to make breaks from work! [1]

My adventure with game jams began back when I was studying at the Warsaw University of Technology and I met people from students’ society of game development “Polygon” (http://polygon.pw.edu.pl/). They were working on hosting Warsaw site of world-wide Global Game Jam that takes place each year in winter. At first I was hesitant because I didn’t have any experience in the field and I didn’t know if I would manage to make something. It turned out that I had a great fun and learned a lot - by myself and thanks to other jammers that were willing and happy to help me and let me work with them. A year later I wanted to make my input into the community and joined the organization team, and   it turned out to be the biggest game jam in Poland - Slavic Game Jam (https://www.facebook.com/slavicgamejam/). Lessons and memories I got from that are priceless.

I recommend trying this to everyone who is interested in making games - no matter if you are  the beginner or advanced!

Yes, I've participated in the similar event but it was related to programming on mobile platforms instead of game development. I really enjoyed it and as it was mentioned in the article it is a great opportunity for inexperienced people to gain new knowledge.
I'm not very fond of computer games. But there were times when I could play some games all day long.
If you enjoy playing games and it helps you to relax after a hard day then I don't think it is waste of time. Although there are people who would say that it is always better, for example, to read a book or watch a film, so answer to this question is strongly subjective.
Unknown said…
Of course I agree to you that it is a subjective matter whether you prefer playing games or watching a movie etc. Although proponents of playing games will make a case that when you play a game you have to make decisions, which is not the case with movies. Thus, playing games is more of an "active" form of relax ;)

I am a musician and one jam session in which I participated was just connected to music. I was twice at the weekend festival where I played mainly board games. Lately I haven't played a lot of games, but since childhood I have loved strategy games. Now I like MMO-RPG games. As for the last question, in my opinion, in most cases, playing games is a waste of time. A better option are board games or games like dungeons and dragons . The game is based mainly on imagination so it has a good effect on the imagination.

1. Of course, I've heard about games, but never participated in their creation. A very useful article, maybe I'll come up with an idea for the game someday and teamwork will be useful to me.
2. I prefer the console. Most of all I like racing. 3. What games for me? For me, this is entertainment in my spare time. But besides the games I have a million more entertainments, so rather I prefer live communication and outdoor walks, so I play games more often in winter when there is a day off.

Have never participated in something like game jams but it sound terribly like hackatons. Never felt confident enough to actually go on some of them.
As of now started to play Starcraft 2 again after year of inactivity. Friend invited me for some evening game and its was fun so we started playing on somewhat regular base.
3. Do you thing that playing games is a waste of time or maybe a valuable hobby?
It depends. If you feel happy during gaming and it's not your routine and it's not hurting you other life goals - why not?
Unknown said…
1. Have you ever participated or heard about game jams before?
I have never heard nor participated in game jams before, but after reading your presentation I think I am familiar with the feeling, as I have participated in few coding hackatons.

2. Do you like playing computer games? If so, what is your favourite title/genre?
I like to kill the time with computer games, but I am not a fan of them. I would say my favorite title is Hotline Miami, but surprisingly my favorite genres are fps and racing.

3. Do you thing that playing games is a waste of time or maybe a valuable hobby?
It depends on the game you're playing and unfortunately I find most of current games to be a waste, rather than valuable experience. On the other hand, I know many board games, which are just marvellous.

I have never participated in game jam but have seen a live stream of people designing and programming games on such competitions. I would love to participate in that one day but right now I don’t have that much time and lack a knowledge of creating computer games. I do like playing computer games from time to time, my favorite genre by far is strategy. I think that playing computer games is relaxing, but it is easy to waste too much time doing so.
Unknown said…
No, I haven’t, but it seems very interesting!
Yes, I like playing computer games. My favorite titles are CS GO and Fortnite. Some time ago I was playing a lot of H1Z1: King of the Kill too. Overall, MMO games.
For me it’s a valuable hobby. Thanks to MMORPG games I learned a lot of english when I was a young ;).
Illia Kalinin said…
1.Yes, I have heard about some big ones, but never participate. Surely I would like to try someday.
2. I loved it when I was younger, I spent few years playing MMORPG, but nowadays I don't really have time for playing games, so I've concentrated on only one - CS:GO <3
3. Nowadays "playing games" may become even work, can you imagine yourself as a game tester in a big company?

I haven't really heard this name before, but I don't think that the specific names for the events matter as long as we know what hackatons are and where to find them. I consider these events as a great opportunity to improve our skills as well as to get in touch with people who could matter in our work life in the future.
I like playing games from time to time, but I don't have much time to do so. Also, I pretty often feel like I'm wasting time and I don't get any benefit from playing them at all. That's because many games nowadays feel really generic and they don't have any real, intellectual value. That's not the case for all of them, but that's just my recent thoughts on the game market.
Playing games is a hobby like every other. It's not the rule that none of the hobbies are a waste of time as well as that all games are useless. It depends on what and how we play it. Do we develop ourselves through playing them? Do we learn anything that could be useful later in our lives?
No, I didn’t think that something like game jams even exist. The idea seems similar to Hackaton but it takes much time. Bringing people of same interests together and letting them create something new is really fascinating.

Yes, I like playing computer games but I completely don’t have time to play any. I like playing actions and shooters.

I don’t think so. Nevertheless, it depends how much time you spend playing computer games. Computer games change the way you think and increase your reaction. After so much hours spent playing computer games I would say that it wasn’t bad at all.
I heard somewhere about game james but i have never tried it. Maybe, one day i will try it, but i'm not interested in games at all. I don't like playing computer games and i don't have enough time to play it. My favourite genre is shooter(counter-strike). I think playing games is a waste of time despite the fact that you are playing it like professional. Earning money from playing a game is a good thing, but not stable.
Vladlen Kyselov said…
I have never heard before about game jams and any kind of jam at all. I am fan of computer competitive type games, but also my favourite single player genre of games are horror games, because you will never get tired of playing them and you will always have a lot of fun and positive or sometimes negative emotions out of it. I think playing computer games is a hobby and it is the best way to kill your free time if you don`t want to do anything else, thats exactly why I love playing them
Unknown said…
Nope, i have never participated nor heard about such event before. I do like playing computer games, and probably my favorite genres are FPS/Story telling games and interactive movies. I think that it depends on how much time you spend on it. If it's just for relaxing or you get ideas for your games from it(if you work in game dev.) then its a good hobby, otherwise probably its a waste of time(a bit). Anyway, you should always have some other good hobby for self-developing

I have never participated in game jams but I have heard about it. Your article is very interesting and told me more about that. As I said in other presentation, playing computer games can be good way to spend time with friends. You can make tournaments with them. In single mode games I like interesting plot so "The Witcher" is the best game I have ever played. You have to think about your choices because it can affect on the end of the game. About last question? Playing computer games is the same hobby as football or basketball for me. It's your own time and you decide what do you want to do. Of course, for one group of people it can be waste of time but the same situation can be with your interests so in my opinion we shouldn't decide what is "valuable hobby".

1. Have you ever participated or heard about game jams before?
Yes, I participated in two game jams, and last time my team managed to get to the third place (out of more than 20 teams in total).

2. Do you like playing computer games? If so, what is your favourite title/genre?
Yes, and it's hard to give single favorite genre of games, but there few I like the most: Planetside 2, Don't Starve, The Elder Scrolls series, and so on...

3. Do you thing that playing games is a waste of time or maybe a valuable hobby?
For me it's more valuable hobby than watching movies or series, because it require more interaction than films. And some games have much more interesting plot than most of the Hollywood blockbusters that got prizes for plots.

1. Have you ever participated or heard about game jams before?
No, it is the first time I hear about this, however it would be nice to participate in one. I am not sure if I have the skills needed - I am not yet a programmer nor a musician or a graphic designer, so probably more of a spectator is what I'd be.

2. Do you like playing computer games? If so, what is your favourite title/genre?
I like the Witcher. I have not played it but I've seen a streamer do it and I would like to try it one day.

3. Do you think that playing games is a waste of time or maybe a valuable hobby?
I guess both. It gives you plenty of fun and creativity and it is one of the pearls of our age - that you can play as a hero in worlds so different from ours. However, in real life, apart from creativity it gives you often less than other hobbies, such as sport for example (which is good for your health).

I had never participed in things like that but i’ve heard about it. I think that in PJATK was something like that.
I don’t like playing in computer games. I don’t have a time for it. I like board games because i can spend time with friends playing and have fun.
I think that if someone like it and think about games more seriously, then it’s not wasting time. I like play simple games on my phone for chill at the end of day.

I have heard about game jams but I have never participated in one. I do like playing games but i can't specify my favorite title/genre as I have played in many games from multiple genres. I would say that playing games can be both a waste of time and a valuable hobby. It can be great stress reliever or time-killer and can be even a source of income. However, when it takes all of your free time and you don't have any different interests, then I think it might become a problem.
It honestly amazes me that so many developers were able to make this many games in such a short time frame and at this high a quality. Well done to all who were involved.

Yes, I've heard about improvisations and I probably have seen one before, but not live on stage and I don't remember anything about it. This kind of entertainment can definitely be fun if you find talented performers. But I have never been interested in this kind of entertainment.

I have never participated or heard about game jams before. But it has very similar formula to hackathons, where you have to create some soft from scratch in short period of time working all the time without breaks.
I used to love playing games, now I don't have time to do this. My favorite gainer is for sure is action RPG but now I usually play short online multiplayer games like League of Legends or Fortnite.
I think that playing games can be very creative and can develop many of your not-gamers skills. I am pretty sure that there is many research on it.

No, I never were intrested in that particular event. Maybe I'm not the typical IT guy.
Yeah, sometimes I like to sit in front of computer and play Battelfield for a couple of hours just to releax and clear my brain of any thoughts.
I think both, playing games brings almost nothing to our lives(if you're just playing it and nothing else) but it's good for our mood(if we like it ofc). I know that You can make money from it, so at the end, it brings something. Like I said, I like playing, it helps me calm my minds and sometimes forget about my thoughts.

It’s ance hobby same as watching series .

I've never heard of game JAMS, so it's hard for me to write something more.

Yes, I love playing computer games. Before studies, I could play all the time. Now there isn't much time in the process, but I try to play when it's time. My favorite titles are games from Rockstrar and Ubisoft.

Of course it isn't a waste of time. This is a hobby for me. I think that everyone has a hobby, and playing games is definitely one of them.

You wrote about board games. I agree that there is a lot of fun and value in that, but what do you think about couch-coop video games - those where there is more than one player, but everyone is in the same room and is sharing the screen?
Unknown said…
Good idea, better use time to spend it more actively, especially that we spend most of our days by the computer screens anyway!
Unknown said…
Yes, gamejams basically evolved from the hackatons and it sometimes happens that a hackaton has a separate game jam track.

Playing a board game is a great way to make friends with other people, unless you're playing Monopoly - then you'll make enemies!

If you are interested in creating games, a good point to start is to play games and think what would you change in the titles you play to make them better.

I have also learned a lot of English words thanks to computer games. Unfortunately, vocabulary related to the knight's armor and slaying dragons wasn't very useful in my school!

I have never heard about game jams, but the idea is great. I think that you can learn a lot from such events - new people, new ideas, another level of motivation, skill exchange - great chances for advanced and beginners. If I was into game creation I would like to take part in such project, but I am not. In my opinion, if people can make money from their hobby and love their job it is amazing and life is happier. For someone it is gaming and game creation. Every person chooses his own way, so I can't blame someone for the 'wrong' hobby or carrier. People must be happy and satisfied, no matter what they do. If it is gaming - ok.

No, I've never participated or even heard about it. And I don't play games. So it's not my type of spending time. But it's cool that people with similar hobbies good spend and make things together.
Each kind of people groups should have their personal space where they can express themselves and do what they like.

1. I have organized such small events for me and my friends. Of course scale of this party was much more smaller but for me it is nice way of spending free time. It was more like a 'LAN Party' but I prefer small events like that.

2. I like playing computer games. I am a big fan of GTA series and all of Rocstar's games. I was also a fan of CODs and Battlefields but after I have tried a ARMA III I can say that CODs and Battlefields are so unrealistic that I can't play in this titles anymore.

3. I think that it only a entertainment and it is smarter way of spending time than watching a TV because in computer games you are active participant.
I think that games is not bad but need to know what you do because when you play you don't produce something what can give you money so you must somehow monetize you hobby. Gaming can be boring job too :)
I like to play in computer games but I do this only when I need to relax after some type of activity.

I do like competitive games. I like to compare myself to other players, and to see my progress in a games like this.

3. Do you thing that playing games is a waste of time or maybe a valuable hobby?

I think it can become a some kind of a show like football is nowadays. It can attach a lot of people to watch, or even play. I can't wait till it happens

Yes, I have heard about them, but haven't participated yet. I think it might be a thrilling experience to have a change in such event. I'm a game lover, and I enjoy playing video games a lot! Unfortunately, I don't have much time for these recently. My favourite type of games are ones that have an open world, well-planned history and various types of enemies. I like action, and I consider myself as a hardcore game player. I love the feeling that I need to learn how to defeat bosses, try to figure out the tactics etc.
I think playing video games develop our abilities. I believe if something improves yourself that it's worth paying money for that.

I have never participated or heard bout game jams before but now I know and In my opinion it is really interesting but when in one place there are so many people, how do they concentrate ? I would for example prefer some rooms apart a not a big population in one place thinking and deciding about a new project. I like computer games a lot and my favorite are dishonored and its an rpg kind with a really good story , and the second one is call of duty. I think that playing game is a hobby but at the same a waste of time. the only productivity it force you is to think.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
