Week 10 [08.01-14.01.2018] A free ride

Do you like driving a car? Of course you do. Okay, even if dont you most certainly like to travel, move from point A to B in a car as either a driver or a passenger. Most probably you went on a trip to some long distant place and you did feel the excitement of rushing early in the morning, packing yourself up and just hitting the road. The act, the process of reaching the destination may be somehow thrilling, as important as the trip alone. Now, take that appealing, stimulating feeling of going on a trip with your car, imagine it, feel it and quadruple it. Thats how riding a motorcycle is.

In short
Ever noticed how most of motorcyclists are just passionate about riding? How wide of a smile they have on their face before, during and after a ride. Because it brings joy, freedom, exploration, excitement, a connection to the surroundings.

In a car everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame. On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.
Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Being on a motorcycle, taking those turns, ups and downs on a country road on a beautiful day is an experience worth of living for. In contrast to the car a rider absorbs his surroundings with his every sense. Feeling the warmth of the sun in open road, sudden breeze from a shade of trees in fragrant forest, the speed and slow, the wind and flow, the colourful world moving around, you can all feel it, embrace it or rather it embraces you.

I ride because it's the next best thing to sex, and I already have six children! Really, the reason I love to ride is that it gets me to focus on the intensity and joy of being in the moment, and is just about the only thing that gets me to stop thinking about 20 things at once. So an hour on a motorcycle is like 20 hours of vacation!
Erik Buell, founder, Buell Motorcycle Company MC

It is impossible to pass on the feeling and fully explain the experience. Also, the whole bikers environment and little society is kind of unique. Its really like a big family (always waving and greeting a fellow biker on the road). Bikers are always happy and eager to help you on the road, most of them are very passionate about riding. Because of that, they are also more aware riders, skilful as riding is more demanding than driving in regards of attention and technique. But Im sure that if you own a motorcycle you know what I mean and If you dont have one, try it! I guess its only possible to understand through experiencing it.

The attitude
Before you grab a pitchfork and start yaddaing how dangerous riding a motorcycle is and how crazy bikers are, let me remind you that most of bikers are just simple people like you and I, you might not even realize. Lets not judge the whole group based on few rotten fruits you can see on the streets sometimes. Most motorcyclists are invisible. Few years back there was a campaign Motocykliści są wśród nas that pointed this out. Whats more, bikers family does much good like organizing, participating in awesome events such as Motomikołaje, visiting orphanages, hospitals, spreading road awareness and education.

Traffic jam? Oh I love strawberry jam
Another awesome thing in riding a motorcycle in case of a city is that you dont care about traffic jams, congestion. You always flow like a water. Its called filtering. How does filtering works is explained in this short video which I highly recommend watching:

Questions:
  1. Do you own, ride a motorcycle or know anyone who does? If not, would you like to try?
  2. Do you like to travel/move/explore distant places?
  3. What is your attitude towards bikers  riders and motorcycles? Did you ever interact with one on the road?
  4. What do you think about filtering? Do you think buspas should be allowed for bikers riders as well?

Comments

I do not own motorcycle, but I think it's quite nice fun to have it. On the other hand I think it's way more dangerous than cars.
I love to travel. I does not matter if we are speaking about going abroad to sightseeing or relaxing, going work a walk in forest or trying to climb some mountain - I just love it. This feeling that makes you feel free while having your own journey - it's outstanding. Jogging at some parks is other way of exploring nature that I enjoy.
I do not have any specific felling about bikers or motorcycles. Sometimes there are some people that do not respect traffic rules and it makes me annoyed, but there are also car drivers that do it to, so...
Biker should have their own roads. Bike is neither a car or human so riding a bike on normal street or pavement is bad. The problem is that in countries like Poland bikers do not have their own roads ( or it's not much enough of it).

I do not own a motorcycle and I can't ride it, but I know some people who have and ride. I would like to try, of course I would. But it is dangerous. It is dangerous, because motorcycles are big and heavy and I may have got some problems with it. In group of people I know who own a motorcycle, great part of them had got some accidents which were quite dangerous. Owning a motorcycle would be a dangerous for my relationships with family, as they care a lot and they would be very worried for all the time. So riding yes, but owning and riding often - I don't think so.
I like to travel. It is relaxing and give an opportuinity to get to know places, people, climates and cultures. About year or two ago I was "exploring" Poland - I was a weekend tourist. It was quite nice - I've beed in many places and some of them aren't too popular, as Pacanów (p,lae where Koziołek Matołek was going in all the books).
It bikers and motorcycles act normally I'm fine with that. But I've got a problem when they act like king of road - I'm not a experienced driver and it makes me very uncomfortable when they are trying to ride next to me, they squeeze between cars etc.
I think that buspas should be allowed for bikers, because of resons above. What the most important for this topic is that motorcycled woul rather not block this buspas, so it won't be a problem for buses.

I like to travel a lot. Especially to the seaside, even if it's only for one day. When after long trip you finally see seaside... I can't find enough words to describe my feelings in such moments.

1. I did own a motorbike (ktm terrain bike, not road legal), but that was some time ago. I generally wouldn't ride a road legal bike. Even though I trust myself to ride, I do not trust others on the road. I even considered getting a slower bike for work commute but found it to be too dangerous, especially in Poland. I've seen too many accidents caused by people who shouldn't be able to drive cars nor motorbikes, so I ultimately passed. I do like the experience though, that is why I did ride a cross bike.
2. I like to travel far, and for that I use my cars. I also found that for me personally motorcycle trips are not as comfortable. A car can deliver as much adrenaline as a bike does, only without all the pain biking causes.
3. I found that bikers are often (not always) called organ donors for a reason. There is no culture amongst bikers in Poland whatsoever and in most cases I do not feel sorry for them getting into accidents. They have to be aware of the fact, that they are much smaller and lighter than a car driver with his vehicle. Even the drivers mistake that would mean a scratch for another car, might mean death for the bike rider. Riders do very often ride their bikes like driving gods, which tends to cause even more ugly accidents. I do not like to generalize, but this time - generally bike culture in Poland is terrible, and my attitude towards bikers here is usually very negative. I do not like all the "look in the mirror, there might be a biker coming" campaigns. They are highlighted by the bikers while neglecting the fact that they zoom between cars with very high velocity, very often not giving the drivers a chance to see them. And ultimately it's their life that's at stake.
4. NO. Bikes are not buses. Bus lanes are there for a reason - for buses to be able to travel at a regular pace. Even though I drive a lot, I am strongly for raising the tickets that you get for driving in bus lanes. If the ticket would not be 100PLN, but for example 1500PLN, people would start respecting it, and commuting by public transport would be faster. Now imagine how fast it would be if your bus would get stuck after a group of bikers, casually doing 10kph in the bus lane...

That said, I would want to see more bike roads. Poland is terrible at providing them and the statistics are among the worst in Europe. This is not OK, considering the fact how congested the big cities are in Poland, and how that could be reduced by expanding the bicycle infrastructure.

I don't ride motocycle but sometimes I think about it when I'm in traffic jam and motocycles pass me. I think it's good way in big cities like Warsaw. I prefer car for distant places because I think this is less tiring. I have a few situations with bikers but never with motorcycles. Once I stopped unintentionally on cycle path when I had green arrow. I didn't notice a quick biker. I apologised to him but he didn't notice and screamed at me. Next he stood in front of my car and said "now you go around me". I think he was high because it was winter and it was nearly 0 C and very cloudy and he was only wearing t-shirt and had strange glasses.
I don't know what I think about buspass because on the one hand motorcycles are very small but on the other hand motorciclist ride very qucikly.

It is my dreams to buy a bike once and have a several month trip on it. Unfortunately my parents are still against so I will have to achieve this goal by myself. I think bikers and people with motorcycles are great, because to my mind, motorcycles give unforgettable expression after a ride. I really want to have my own motorcycle.
I don't own a car or motorcycle, but i want to buy it in near future. I'm not a fan of motorcycles, i think that they are dangerous, but i want to drive my own car.
Yeaah, thank you for this question about travelling. My dream is to travel on my car, to explore new places, cities and other breathtaking views.
As i said, i'm not a hater of bikes, but they are not for all people i think. You must be 100% sure of yourself that you will not create a dangerous situation and also you must be 100% sure of someone, that can not create this kind of situation too - it's unreal.
I'm always on a side, that helps us to make our life easier and less dangerous, so i'm not against 'buspas'

I have been riding motorcycles for 6-7 years. My grandpa used to do the rides with me to the forest on his old motorcycle and I loved it.
I prefer urban riding rather than long distance voyages. In my opinion, car is a better vehicle for such trips.
Like in every social group there are bad and good people. The same thing relates to the motorcyclists. Some of them think they are allowed to do more and these type of people is annoying on the road. However there also good ones that behave properly on the road and don't cause any problems.
I think filtering is a blessing ;) Of course every motorcyclist should know how to do it safely and don't ride 100 km/h in a narrow line between cars. And as long as motorcycles doesn't make any problem for buses I think that motorcycles should be allowed on bus-lanes.

Owning a motorcycle and riding is more risky but also so much more fun ;) And traveling by riding is also more rewarding as you are directly connected with surroundings unlike in a car where your are isolated.
Thanks for the comment.
Unknown said…
Riskier than a car but way more fun and no risk no fun ;) Statistics says most of the accidents involving riders/motorcyclists are caused by car drivers so there is a commonly known rule among riders "to ride like you are invisible", especially in a city.
Bikers are allowed to ride on a buspasess in Łódź, Gdańsk or Kraków, it is considered to let them in Warsaw link
Thanks for the comment.

Yep, exploring is great, our inner-ancient-joyful-instinct ;)
Thanks for the comment.

I agree that sometimes it doesn't look so colourful on the streets and we are far from perfect but the situation is improving, especially over the last few years when we see an increase in riders number. It's not so uncommon to see cars making space for a motorcycle to pass nowadays, especially in Warsaw (except Cracow, they don't know how to drive in Cracow) ;)
I agree that people in general in a car, bike, bicycle do not value their and/or others lifes. A car is massive compared to bike and can easly crush it, riders ride forgetting that and we happen to have those awful accidents. Not all bikers are like that fortunately. And we don't notice those who aren't. Those are invisible.
Thanks for the comment.

YES, they joy motorcycle gives is huge! Pure freedom and excitement. Good luck getting one! :)
Thanks for the comment.

I agree that motorcycles are not for everyone. Not everyone has to like it but if you want to rider, you better be responsible and aware of other less responsible drivers.
Thanks for the comment.

Excellent summary of motorcyclist group. Those giving us bad reputation are just easiest to notice and those behaving are invisible, that explains the general attitude.
Thanks for the comment.

I don't own a motorcycle. Some of my friends have it and they really love it. I am a petrol head, but to be honest I'm not into motorcycles. I really like to take long trips in my car. Favourite music, empty road.. I don't fight with riders on the road. I try to make them a place in a traffic jam so they can go through it. Should they be allowed on "buspas". Well, they are the same drivers as those in cars, so I think we should equally use road and don't use "buspas".

I don't own a car or motorcycle and I don't want to buy it. I have read a lot of articles about accidents with motorbike drivers. They are often die...
It is too fast and too dangerous for me. I rather prefer bike :P
I like to travel and discover new places but only by my car.
When I see a motorcycle in traffic jam I'm trying to make some place for him.
I think that current situation with "buspas" is ok. It is special lane for people whose are traveling by bus or taxis.
Ad. 1. I don’t have and I don’t ride a motorcycle. I know people, who do and like it. But I am not interested in trying this. I consider it as a danger, which is not necessary to appear in our life. I consider it as totally needless activity, which should be forbidden.
Ad. 2. I do like travel and to conquer large distances, finding new interesting places, sight-seeing, meeting new people. And I do it using car, train, plane – much safer than motorcycles ways of moving.
Ad. 3. I have very critical attitude towards rides and motorcycles, actually I am strictly against them. That’s because for “extraordinary impressions” too high price can be payed – because they expose to danger not only themselves, and also other people, and that’s simply not fair.
Ad. 4. I had no interaction on the road, but I’ve heard about many such situations. Riding should be acceptable only in special areas, that’s my opinion. “Buspas” is not such area, I mean large space available only to riders. It shouldn’t bring danger to people, who don’t have influence on such “phenomenon”.

No, I don't own and I haven't even tried to ride a motorcycle. Yes, I would like to try, but I don't feel it like it's something necessary in my life. I feel myself comfortable in a car.
Yes, I love travelling by car in the summer, but long-distance rides bore me and I get tired after 4-5 hours.
I don't have special attitude to them, however I think they are out of control and regulations, because of their behaviour on the road.
I am convinced that such "buspasses" can be allowed just to taxi drivers, bus drivers, ambulances and some other special exceptions.
I dont have a motorcycle but a good friend of mine is biker. And yes- I would like to try riding a motorcycle.
I love long and slow rides by a car but I can imagine that motorcycle is far better for just riding for fun.
I have nothing against biker- they are neutral to me but sometiems I adore their motorbikes.
I'm not sure about buspas for bikers. If it's not a problem for buses I neither see any problem.

because we have a winter you need car and motorcycle. So 100k car + 40k motorcycle = 150k car. I will stick with cars. I am just too fat to wear all this protection wear.
Unfortunately I don't have my motorcycle and I would love to have it. In Poland, the conditions aren't favorable due to the varied weather and short season in which you can use the motorcycle. I was riding a motorcycle, unfortunately not on some long routes.

I don't like to travel. I mean I enjoy spending time near the sea or visit foreign countries, but, as you say, travel from A to B, that is what I hate. It doesn't really matter, how I travel, I'm still going to hate it.

I don't have a motorcycle and I don't really want to try. I've tried quadbike a year ago, I was riding it in desert, that was a pure fun. But I don't see such potential fun in motorcycles.

I don't think it is a good idea to allow bikers to use "buspas". And why they even need it? Are they not flexible enough to avoid most of traffic jams? Bus lane is only in service for public transportations and in my opinion it should stay as it is.

I don't own, I don't ride a motorocycle, but I would like to try. I once was riding a motorcycle but in game and I was playing on gamepad. It was very hard to get control of the bike, I think it was because I didn't get used to play on gamepad. I don't like to explore distant places, I like the place where I am. I like riders on road. They make traffic jam less jammed. If there were more riders, we would certainly have less jam on traffic jam, and there would be safer because drivers would get used to drive along with riders. I think buspas should be allowerd for riders, at least until there are more riders. It would make safer to travel by road by riders.

I don't have one, neither rode any of them, unfortunately. My parents are work in a hospital, so as far as I remember, it was always like "oh and did I tell you that LPR got me another of those bikers to be slit for transplants?", so yeah, before I even would sit on the motorcycle, they would probably have some sleepless nights. When it comes to the dangers of it, I think that driving a motorcycle requires you to think three times - twice for yourself, and one for all the people around you, as even some pleb, cardboardish tico at least has some steel (?), and a little engine in front of the driver, that serves as a hull, whereas you have nothing, or some fine leather suit and a helmet. That's the big deal - not getting killed not by your own actions, but by some other, often lightheaded drivers...

I like travelling, especially when I'm driving alone, cause I can "floor it" on some expressways, although longer trips with high speed sometimes feel tiresome, mostly when the fun from "whoa I'm driving way above limit" ends...

I feel sympathetic towards riders and they should be allowed to use bus lanes. They are far better than bikers, who don't even have to have the licence and often ride recklessly, of course having their metal-butt syndrome (a.k.a I HAV PRIORTY, SO IM INVINCIBLE!11) and pretending they are healthier than car drivers (yea, cause riding a bike between hundreds of cars and inhaling all the "good stuff" must be healthy for you"). Motorcyclists are usually polite, are thankful for nice actions (like moving your car closer to one side) and ACCELERATE FASTER - seriously, its a real plague with cyclists - "hurr durr I'm gonna position myself on the front of everyone, right before the lights, so I will be blocking EVERYONE on this lane, instead of some people behind me"
As of now i do not own a motor cycle but i do plan on getting one if the chance is given to me.

Yes traveling is great, i love to explore new places because i tend to focus on non obvious parts of it, for example trip to paris while seeing eifell tower was huge(pun intended), seeing immigrand community live in barracks under the crossroad was also huge, most of us wont see the second part.

Bikers a great centralized culture, in spite of common belief very aware of responsibilities riding a motorcycle brings. The perception of bikers is skewed by young unexperienced drivers, with more muscles than brain in their head.

Allowing bikes on buspasses would change nothing for general traffic only make those bikers safer from actual ignorant drivers. And its not like we dont allow cars on busspasses we do just in "special defined" cases.
I always loved motorcycles. I remember the first time I was taken for a ride as a passenger when I was 8 years old. It was a lot of fun. From that point onward I knew I would own one someday. The dream came true when I was 14 and I got myself a 50cc scooter. I used to ride it every free moment. It also served as my mode of commute to school back then, which cut the travel time by more than half. I remember how frustrated I was when I learned that their max speed was blocked to 50kmph. So after maturing the engine, by making more than 500km I decided to take the blockade off. That made riding the 2-wheeler even more fun.

Once I came of age I instantly got myself a category A driving license. It was back in 2011, so there were no limits like there are today. I could have bought myself Hayabusa and it would be totally legal for me to drive it. Knowing that I had only experience with 50cc I decided to settle on Honda CBR600f 2011. And how beautiful it was. Fully black with some custom elements. The moments of riding it were definitely one of the best of my life.

Unfortunately in my history with motorcycles I had 4 accidents. Two of them resulted in total crashes, after the first one I bought a second exact same model. After the 2nd crash I decided to let myself mature a bit. The thing is that in all of these accidents I wasn't a perpetrator, but there were so many other close situations in my history with bikes, that would have most likely resulted in me riding a wheelchair, that I decided that I wasn't ready for bikes. I know that one day I will once more enjoy the beauty of motorcycles, but probably not in Poland, where most of the people don't know how to share road with 2-wheelers and probably not a racing motorcycle, but something more like Honda African Twin, so I wouldn't be internally pressured to speed it.
I don't own a bike, but I probably will in the future. Preferably when I'm a bit older, so I can move out of the city-centre. Driving through a forest is a much more pleasant experience than dodging cars in city traffic. Driving a bike certainly has its advantages, one being not having to waste time as much time in traffic, but it's not all fun and games. I was once in a car-collision where a truck driver scratched the whole side of our car with his trailer while taking a turn. He didn't notice us in his side mirror, and we were driving an SUV at a time. For bikers it's even worse. That's what one of the main purposes of the "Motocylkiści są wśród nam" (bikers are among us) campaign was. To make people remember that bikers are also a part of the traffic, so they would pay more attention to what they do on the road and what they see in their mirrors.
I have a few such friends and all of them are indeed passionate about that. Personally I don't really know why, but it's the same thing as my own person being passionate about computers, so there is nothing weird in it at all.

I'd want to try ride on a motorcycle sooner or later, but for some reason I never have an opportunity to do so :(.
I don't own any motorcycle but i know a lot of people that do own. Despite the fact that driving motorcycle is more dangerous than car i would like to have motorcycle driving license and try it out. I love to travel and i would love to travel by comfortable motorcycle. My attitude to bikers is the same as for all drivers. I think that "buspas" should not be allowed for riders because they're the same drivers as car drivers and they can not have greater privileges than normal drivers.
Motorcycles. Very controversial topic. All my experience was limited to bicycles and a moped. I think I would like to try riding a motorcycle. It would be an exciting experience. But I would still be afraid. I was familiar with some bikers. They are very unusual people. They see their motorcycle as a living being, and they are ready to pray for him. They also always try to improve it. But their worldview is very unusual and interesting. I think that I would like to spend time with bikers and evaluate their way of life from the inside.

I don't have any motorbike as I am not interested in them. I am more of a car guy than a biker. None of my friends don't have them either. Yes, I like to travel especially by car - I am aware that it might be tiring to some people but I find something that calms me down when I drive a car somewhere distant. My last trip by car was to Italy and I really enjoyed despite the distance I made. I don't have any objections towards motorbikers and what's more I admire sometimes their reflex when they face a dangerous situation on the road. What I don't like are cyclists and people on scooters but these are completely different pair of shoes. When it comes to bus lane I think that I doesn't change anything if it is allowed for bikers or not. Bikes are slim and there is no point for them to be stuck in a traffic jam and occasional use of bus lane shouldn't be forbidden

My highschool colleague rides a motorbike. I'm rather neutral about them. I like to travel to distant placed and I like to do it by car (I love driving) or plane/train + public transport. I'm rather neutral about bikers but sometimes I'm triggered by their lack of imagination. I had a few situations when I knew a biker was around, cause I saw them earlier, but couldn't notice them in a moment I needed to change lanes. Turned out they were just on the right-back of my car, so I did not see them at all but would have hit them if I weren't cautious enough. They shouldn't stay long in such space where a driver can't see them. It is possible not to notice a car and a motorcycle is even less visible. But I had just 2 or 3 such situations. I usually try to make them some space in a traffic jam or make it easier to pass me.
I don't think buspas should be allowed for bikers. They aren't special on a road so why should it be?

1) I used to own one but i sold it. Car is better for me now, still i do know people who own these
2)Depends on the mood but mostly not really.
3) I don't judge them unless they do something dangerous in my vicinity. An do i have never had a close encounter with one.
4) Nope. Buss pas is for busses. Period. Bikes are smaller than cars so even in traffic they can easily mannipulate and get to their target faster than any car.
Tried this many times on my Suzuzuki GSXR 750 - even been i Władysławowo without planning it because the weather was great and I wanted to see the sighst. The best roads and views to travel on bike are near Grunwald. The road is empty - many places to stop by - pure relax.

I have never owned a motorcycle, to tell the truth, I feel uncomfortable with everything that has less then 3 wheels:) but I have a friend, she is a girl, who has always being so girly and cute. But one day she has just decided to ride the motorcycle. And now she is a cool rider. I was so worried about her, but now she is a real pro. I still have no idea, how has it happened:)
I have never been even a passenger, but I would like give it a try one day. Now I just prefer to travel by car and I really enjoy to travel this way.

Unfortunately I do not have a motorcycle. I prefer car. However, in the future I would like to buy a motorcycle. I think that driving a car can reduce stress. In my opinion, most motorcyclists should be more careful on the road. They should not feel like the kings of roads. I have no opinion about buspas ...

I owned a scooter and I really liked to ride it. I made thousands of kilometres on it and it is something completely different to driving a car. It is very addictive and motorcycles are very fast and encouraging you to ride at high speeds. It is really hard to resist.
I love to drive both car and motorcycles with our without purpose. There were whole days which I spent driving/riding only.
I respect them as road users, especially because they are vulnerable to have severe injuries during accidents. I always make space for them to pass me in a traffic jam.
Bus lanes should definitely be available to motorcycles since they do not slow the traffic.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
