Week 10 [08.01-14.01.2018] The Craft Beer Revolution in Poland

HOW IT STARTED

Polish drinking scene changed dramatically in last 5 years. The revolution started in May 2011 when Pinta brewery introduced Atak Chmielu (Eng. attack of hops), first Polish American Indian Pale Ale.  Name of this beer exactly tells the costumers how it tastes – it’s insanely hopped AIPA.

Even though craft beer is more expensive (3-4 times) than regular commercial beer, people loved drinking it. Soon other breweries followed Pinta and started producing their own, original beers. They are not afraid of experimenting with hops, yeast and malt. Every month dozens of new beers have their premiere. Big impact on polish revolution had Tomasz Kopyra, who promotes craft beers on his YouTube channel, blog and in his recently published book.

TYPES OF BEER

All beers fall into two categories:
  • Ales are generally more complex and fuller in body. They are usually more aromatic than lagers. (e.g. pale ales, porters, stouts, wheats)

  • Lagers are generally lighter in body and more “crisp” than ales. They taste better when served cold. (e.g. bocks, dark lagers, pale lagers)

The difference between these two types comes from different yeast. Ale yeast ferments in higher temperature while lager ferments under colder conditions.

BEERS WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF (in my personal opinion)

Kormoran Imperium Prunum

Style: Baltic Imperial Porter
Beer description: Aged with Suska Sechlonska. Dark beer with fine-beige foam. Medium sweet flavour with strong smoked character, some bittersweet chocolate, dried berries and scorched earth.

Recording to RateBeer.com it’s one of the best Baltic Porters in the world and is listed in top 50 in all styles.

Szałpiw Buba Extreme Cognac BA

Style: Quadrupel – Dark beer with deep, rich fruity notes with a alcohol volume of 10% or more.
Description: Moderate to heavy sweet flavour with cognac, dried fruit, plum, sweet malt and wood. It’s extremely balanced, little bit alcoholic.

WHERE TO DRINK

If you are interested in buying craft beer in bottles, you should go to speciality stores. You will be able to buy there polish or imported beers from around the world. It’s worth to mention that those stories are usually serviced by beer geeks, so they can give you advice.

If you want to visit a pub, I would recommend going to multi-taps bars. Most of these bars are changing the beers they are offering on weekly/monthly basis.

Questions:
  1. Have you ever tried any craft beer?
  2. What’s your favourite beer style?
  3. Do you prefer beer, wine, hard liquor or mixed drinks?

Yes, I've tried craft beer. Beer I like the most is light, wheat one. At the Beer Festival I tried dark one, with a little cofee flavor. I took a sip and I decidet to buy whole cup, and it was a miskate. It was expensive and good for two sips. Then, I was very heavy and too aromatic. I couldn't drink whole glass. Wheat, light beer are light and refreshing, but while picking you have to be careful, because they may be very sour.
I prefer mixed drinks. Beer is diuretics and even one glass may make me sleepy. Wine is good, when it is one glass. Then, it is too aromatic and heavy because of it. Drinks are nice and you can decide how strong they will be. What is important, you can easily change their strong, by adding juice/drink or alcohol.

I've never understood why people drink different wines and now I'll not understand why people drink different beers. For my personal opinion it's only alcohol, just buy it, drink it and go have fun, that's all.

I've started enjoying craft beers not that long ago, maybe a year ago, and I'm unable to go back. I have a friend that is obsessed with craft beers and is even planning on making his own, and he got me acquainted with them. I do not have one favorite, but in plural, they are: dark beers, especially with traces of bourbon/whiskey, sours (fruity), milk/chocolate stouts, and last but not least, citrus IPA's.

Right now I definitely prefer craft beer, but I also enjoy good wines and good mixed drinks.

I think it's similar to eating the food. I guess you do not eating the same dish every day.
Some people like to taste different types, discover new flavors etc.

Personally I attened these kind of festivals twice (2x Warsaw Beer Festival). They are really cool - you can taste dozen of beers without paying for a whole bottle/glass.

Dark beers are rather for beer geeks and more experienced beer drinkers. For poeple who start their beer jernouey I would recommend something lighter - wheat, ipa, lager etc.

I like "Atak Chmielu" very much. It is one of my favorite beers. I drink beer very rarely but when I do it I prefer this kind of beer. I call them "funny beers" because very ofen they have very funny labels with a lot of colors. I have a friend who is a connoisseur of tatra but I don't understand it. I prefer to spend money on good beer. In my familly citi there is a very good shop with craft beer and they have beer from barrel. I love it. You must drink this kind of beer on the same day. They have very funny names for example "Wąsaty bosman".

Because of my friend who is passioned about beers I also started to be interested in them. Once I tried to brew my own beer but it didn't taste well and I gave up. Maybe your friend will be able to handle the whole process without making any mistakes. :p

I don't drink beer so often now due to food intolerance.
I have tried craft beers, some of them are good, but I do not like RIS (to mutch flavors and to intense) or IPAs (it gots flavor that is like the worst part of eating a lemon), I have not tried Baltic Imperial Porter yet, and many more, so maybe there is a chance to change my mind. But for now I prefer a light cold white beer on a hot day. My favorite beer style are wheat beers. As for alkohol in global, I prefer hard liquor like vodka, tincture or whisky.

Personally, I'm not a fan of craft beers. That's probably because I've never stumbled upon any which would make it up for a price that I've paid of it. I'm sure that there are many beers worth trying, but I'm just not type of a person who would always seek something new. At least when it comes to drinking beer. I think that my favourite type of beer is just a regular lager from any common store. I can't drink any beer unless it's cold.
My two favourite types of alcohol are wines and whisky. I really like both of them, it just depends on my current mood.

I have tried a craft beer (brixston), really very tasty. But I don't have any favorite beer but I'm not fan. Preferred wine, also delicious and at the same time useful :)

I'm a person who don't drink alcohol now. I stoped 4 months ago because of moral reasons but before that I loved beer. I liked going out to the beerhouse and trying different flavors and types of beer with my friends. I remember that revolution and this big boom on new beers, so i tried craft beers. I think that one of my favourite was dark lager. Besides beer, I liked to drink white wine or wine with sodas.

I have tried a craft beer last month. It was my first time and it was it was good. I never thought that beer can be very tasty. I don't remember what type was that. I was drinking what my friend recommended me :)
I specially don't like alcohol. I like to drink beer but not too often. It's the only type I prefer.
I’ve tried craft beer, I’m not an expert but I do understand the fascination. Once in a while I like to go to one of Warsaw’s tap bars and get the “beer board” to try different kind of beers they have to offer. I have to try a lot more to decide what is my favorite beer style - cant wait for that moment! :) I appreciate both good beer and good wine which one I decide to drink depends on kind of gathering.

I really like craft beers. I didn't know polish origins you mentioned in your article. What types I like? Well, it depends on my mood. However, I drink mostly IPAs, APAs and good Wheats. Generally, I prefer beers, but that's not always appropriate drink. For example during a good dinner I prefer some good wine.
Yes, I have tried a few craft beer and now I'm only drinking bears like that (I drink about 1 beer a month so I dont have a problem with higher price).
I love American Pale Ale and Baltic Porter styles but your article made me curious about others styles.
I prefer beer and wine (only sweet ones like choya silver).
It is difficult to me to drink something that tastes terrible (I'm talking about you vodka) but sometimes (very rarely) it is good to drink something like that with friends.

I also had to stop drinking craft beers. They had bad impact on my health. Dark lagers are also one of my favourite styles. They have really intensive flavour.

I love Baltic Porters, Russian Imperial Stouts and Barley Wines. You should try beers I mentioned in article. They are great ! However they might be unreachable right now.

I recommend you going to beer festivals. You can buy there samples (100/300/500 ml) and try various types of beer.

Yes, I tried the craft beer. My favorite type of beer is wheat beer. Personally, I prefer beer and vodka.

I tried a few craft beers. I really like pubs like "Kufle i Kapsle" or "Cuda na kiju", which serves good craft beers. I really like Ale. For years I prefered beers, but know I really like drink good vodka (like french Grey Goose, russian Beluga or polish Belvedere).

Yes, I've tried some craft bears but not that many, since I usually drink beer only during mettings with friends.
I'm not really fussy if it comes to beers but generally I like sweet, wheat beers. I've tried few porters but most of the time they're too bitter for me.
It depends on the situation but most of the time I drink vodka, since it doesn't make me feel full, so I have more space for snacks ;)
Sadly I didn't try any so I have no opinion, but for sure I'll get one when I have the opportunity. Thanks for reminding me to put it on my to-try list :).

I've tried many craft beers - In fact, each time I'm going on a holiday, I try to buy some new beers to taste.
I like Lagers, as they are refreshing, especially when cold. Ales are good, but only for tasting (max. 2 bottles), because of their bitter taste (I'll never get those maniacs, drinking some dense soup-like beers, its like drinking some chicory sauce with pepper and way too much mustard).
When it comes to choosing drinks, for me it depends on occasion. I like some wines, but mostly sweet or semi-sweet ones. I usually don't drink vodka, when I have the choice, as it doesn't taste too good for me.

1) I have tried a few but it is not the cheapest choice so i drink these rater rarely.
2) My favourite beer styles are 4. Open, Cold, free and next one. But serously i don't have a fovourite style or brand.
3) That depends on ocasion.
Tried them all for 5 day when there was exhibition at Legia stadium. For me all APA's are not too good and do not like this trend. I truly love all kind of wheat beer - especially cold Żywiec White is a true passion for me - I love it ! From dark beers Porters are quite good but nothing tastes better than good old Guiness.

Many people like beer, but not me. It is bitter and unpleasant. Although the handicraft beer tastes better than beer from the store. Perhaps, I could drink it without disgust. Still, I like beer with different additives. Fruit syrup, fresh fruit, honey and so on. Although, to be frank, if there was a large selection of alcoholic beverages, the beer would be at the bottom of the list. From weak alcohol, I prefer apple cider. Wine is also an excellent choice if it is not sour. And stronger I like whiskey and tequila more. And of course, different cocktails.
Yes I have, I really enjoy them and I’m glad that the revolution happened also in Poland :)
My favorite beer type is Pale Ale, I love it. It’s only second to gin and tonic.

I really like beer. Beer reminds me of rest and relax time. Saturday/Sunday - evening - beer - sounds great, and it is! Personally I prefer beer and vodka. However, I don't drink much alcohol. Gym and alcohol - this is rather not the best connections. :)

Yes, I have tried some craft beers and I have to say that I really enjoyed them. When it comes to style, I really enjoy dark beers so stouts and dark lagers would be my type of choice. Finally, I choose different liquor on different occasions but when I meet with my friends my first one is always beer

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
