Week 11 [09.01-15.01] What if it was for cardio that makes you fat?!

http://static.news.zumst.com/images/85/2016/08/23/88e0f1d72f93482cbc8f6191ee7fcbd2.jpg

There are two reasons why most of us practice sports.

- to get and keep attractive body
- to get healthy and prevent illnesses

When you ask most people what they do to get it they usually say:

"You know... running, cycling, swimming" so... CARDIO

People usually think that exercise should focus on burning calories and that endurance training is the best way to be fit and healthy. And in reality cardio reduces biology index.

People who base their training on running, swimming or cycling usually lose muscles and strenght. What is more they reduce resting metabolic rate.

Long cardio = higher cortisol level

In research in 2011 scientists analized cortisol level in 304 ammateur endurance sportsmen. Result: averege extra production was 42%. Cortisol has long list of negative health consequences. Extra cortisol causes extra fat and loss of muscles.

Higher testosteron to cortsol ratio is anabolic (builds muscles) and low ratio is catabolic

Long cardio = loss of type 2 muscles

Another way of losing muscles in condition exercise is change in muscles.

Apart from stimulating growth of muscles and testosteron level,  fast twitch fibers (white) help burn fat. It means that if you have less  fast twitch fibers you burn less. It's interesting that people who aren't active have more  fast twitch fibers that endurance sportsmen.

Long cardio = reduced resting metabolic rate

Most people believe that burning calories is the best way to lose weight. Unfortunately they have results for short time and damage is for long time. It happens because body wants energy balance so low nutritional value of diet and intensive training cause excessive accumulation of fat, higher appetite, lower metabolism.

Reserach shows that when we lose calories it is because we lose muscles. Reduced muscles cause long health results and reduce basic value of resting metabolic rate.

Long cardio = you can't lose weight

People who lose weight because of cardio, quickly gain weight because their body isn't metabolically active. Loss in muscles and resting metabolic rate cause accumulation of fat and make burning more difficult.

Exercise should concentrate on building and keeping muslces not on burning calories. Then you have faster metabolism, acumulate less fat.

Exercise to build not burn!

People who work on building muscles always look better than people who burn calories. Not only because muscles look more attractive but muscles make metabolism faster. More muscles mean that you have higher resting metabolic rate and you exercise less to keep fit.

Is there anything surprising in this presentation for you?

Will you keep only running to lose weight after reading this presentation?

Very interesting this article. I lost weight 20kg 6 years ago.
I lost weight mainly through running. I practiced the box six times a week. I never heard that running too much is bad or too much interval and I live :)

Some parts were quite interesting like for example: “People who lose weight because of cardio, quickly gain weight because their body isn't metabolically active” or “Reduced muscles cause long health results and reduce basic value of resting metabolic rate.” It confirms what my personal trainer said to me when be began the training, if you are ectomorph you shouldn’t do a lot of cardio exercise.
I don’t run. But I’ll mind the short timespans of cardio training.

I don't exercise on puropose. Not that I'm sitting in place all day every day. I walk really a lot as it helps me to concentrate, think and relax. I enjoy biking and skiing few times a year and do minor physical tasks (probably like most people). But I'm not really concerned with exercises. I'm 25 year old male with 183 cm height and my weight is 56 kg despite eating whatever and whenever I want. I'm satisfied with my body and find most kinds of physical exercise extremly boring.

I don't agree with the article because it sets "good" and "bad" labels although every exercise has it's pros and cons. I don't have weight issues, but I like swimming and running just because it's good for your heart (and for the whole blood system), while lifting weights seems to be a bad idea if you have heart-related issues. I would cheer up anyone with weight issues doing either cardio or other exercises - some people may just like running and others may not, it's not a fully practical choice.

If you want to lose some kg, your training should be smart. Smart training can help you lose more weight than “just” running. When your training is designed properly with a time goal in mind, you’ll shed pounds faster than if you were just running for fun. No wonder why many runners find it difficult to lose weight. Their training isn’t structured to promote weight loss. First step - eat 30g of protein within 30 minutes of waking up to keep you full longer and stop the catabolic break-down of muscle from fasting overnight.

To sum up I am not surprised after I read this article.

To be frank, I have already be aware of all these points you've mentioned.
Also I have never been keen on running or any other kind of cardio excercises, so I can promise you that I won't keep on running after reading this article ;)

I've heard and read that if you want to train your body you have to train all of it, and if you want to lose weight you should do aerobs.
If you want to do anything you should do it wisely and know how to do it.
To sum up: I'm not surprised, but by this article I expanded my knowledge about it :)

Of course a lot of cardio isn't healthy but it's not like that we shouldn't make cardio at all. Traning should be a combination of exercises with weights and cardio. The proportions depend on what we want to achieve and from our predispositions. Cardio as the name suggests it improves heart efficiency. I know people who can't bear the weight so in this case they should do nothing? In my opinion it's important that we in general have been active beacause nowadays a lot of people working at the desk and it leads to many diseases. Of course training is not all beacause very important is our diet.

I fully agree with you Damian.

We play squash at least once a week for 4 months. We just play for fun. As you said about "people just running for fun", I thought about us. For those who don't know - squash is a game which can be very exhausting. During 1 hour it is possible to burn over 1000 kcal.

And what about effects of our playing? Of course, I improved myself a lot. Especially my physical condition. You also feel much better than some time ago. But we admitted that if we would like to lose more weight or something else (which is not important for us now), it's better to think clever about training (of course, then it is too little to play once a week).

Maybe this article is not surprising for me, but to be honest I wouldn't know how to plan training, if it was necessary for me. Then I would go to a personal trainer.

I have heard about this problem before, but thank you for mentioning it. As in all aspects I guess that we all need to find a perfect solution for each of us. It all depends on what one needs.

I personally think that instead of doing hours of cardio it is better to do an interval training instead. This kind of exercises are making your metabolism active and keep it active despite the fact that you have finished working up a few hours before.
I don' have a problem with my weight, so I don't exercise. Of course I'm doing some sports like volleyball. And one thing I can say - when I seriously training in volleyball team - my weight was the highest in my life.
As I'm looking through the years how many runners looks like there is much true in what you wrote in the article. I think cardio is suppose to be used just for a short amount before intensive mass training in the future. Keeping high cortisol level will not make you healthy or thin after all in a long range of time.

I don't have weight problems, but I love sport and I have been practicing different kinds of sport since I was in my primary school. I think it is very good for your body and to your mind to train something. Just to take care about your health and to feel good. Even when you don't have any weight issues. I know that when you run too much or exercise too much you can loose some weight, but more likely you will gain some muscles. To loose weight it is better to do some cardio. But not too much. It is better to practice different kinds of activity.

Thanks for this presentation, it is really nice. Personally I love running and it enabled me to stay in shape for a long time. I used to take part in city marathons and running 10 km in less than an hour was not difficult to me. Now I try to workout at home but I don't run so systematically which I miss to be honest.

Very interesting topic! Personally I used to train many high performance sports like taekwondo, running and swimming. For me it was the most productive way of spending free time. I have never heard about disadvantages of long term cardio. In my opinion we should learn and remember about our body’s needs.
I have neither weight issues nor metabolism disorders. I do sports, but what is more important, I try to lead active and healthy lifestyle to be in shape. I like running or cycling but for me they are just a way to improve heart health, lungs capacity and boost stamina.

Well that presentation was quite interesting to read. Can you provide some links with sources? I have been training for many years and it is the first time I met statement that a lot of cardio causes weight gain. I would agree with conclusion that endurance sportsman have lower number of fast twitch fibers, but it is mostly because they have enormous number of slow twitch fibers necessary in endurance sports.
I have heard it before, and to be honest I just love this information, because there are not many things that I hate more than cardio.
A lot of people are scared of strength training because they think that they will be “too big”, and in my opinion is the main reason why so many people are obsessed about cardio.

Great article, but I'm not surprised after reading this. As a person who is interested in bodybuilding - muscles gain and fat loss since 3 years ago. I don’t exactly agree with you. Long cardio is not mainly reason of losing fibers of muscles and strength, but incorrect diet too. Always after training - doing exercises, cardio or whatever with high physical effort we should rebuild our organisms by eating valuable and healthy meals. It means that post-workout meal must have high IG carbs and proteins. These nutritions makes faster process of recovery. Long cardio may be replace by HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training). This specific training is short (20-30 minutes) and gives more postive effects (e.g. afterburn effect is 2x more than in case of traditional cardio).

Thank you for this artice. I've already heard about advantages and disadvantages of doing cardio training before. In my opinion, if someone who want to take care about his health then he should buy session with personal trainer. Generally cardio training shouldn't have bad results but it depends on excercises and diet as well.

I do work out and I am focus on building muscles so According to the presentation I am the person who practice proper type of sports. Anyway i think is not that easy as you presented, as I know training should be a combination of cardio and exercises with weights. Best option to achieve what you need is your personal trainer who will prepare not only optimal work out but will also take care of your diet.

I like going to gym. But for me doing exercise is not for get and keep attractive body or get healthy and prevent illnesses. I like going to gym, because I feel happier. I think when you like running you should keep doing it. If you don't like running, like me, you're doing exercise with the barbell.
Unknown said…
All this researches and opinions are very subjective. Also you should consider your body type to choose the right training plan. Maybe for someone this information would be useful, but I know my body better, that's why for me it makes no sense.
I like to go to the gym, I hate running, cause for me it is boring. I love swimming, because it really makes me feel healthy and fool of energy. I was trying the body-building to gain weight, but it works only if you eat like a crocodile and live in a gym. I have no time for that, unfortunately. I loved it so much. Now I just listen to my body to understand what kind of training should I do in the particular day or season.
By the way, I know the guy, who is a running fan. His body is perfect. So, I think that it all depends of a personal type.

I found this article interesting. Usually good diet is enough to lose weight, mainly because human's basal metabolim is a lot more than even the hardest workout could burn. At example, you will burn around 2500 calories during a full marathon. It's the same as your basal metabolic rate! You can just not eat for a day and do nothing to burn that amount of calories. Of course, you still need some exercises to develop your musle and nervous tissue, but the first thing you need to do before that is to lose some excess fat. And to clarify: weight is not everything. It's the body fat percentage that counts.
I think the most important thing in working out is to keep balance between types of exercises and also plan a good, healthy diet, which fits you. You should mix cardio with other exercises because that way it is more effective. Cardio keeps your metabolism high but you also need some body building exercises. Some things in this article is really surprising. I didn't realize some of them. For sure I will do more reading about it because it's very interesting. Great article and subject.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
