Week 11 [09.01-15.11] Big things have always small beginnings.

I think everything that was created by man over the last thousands of years had its first small step. Some of the stories of the formation of various projects are interesting and some not really. In my opinion, such an interesting story is the story of Netflix.
This powerful giant who introduced watching movies and TV series on-demand, legally on the internet and even producing them started very small in mid 90s, renting movies on videos and DVDs through the website and delivering them directly to the customer by mail. Customers paid a monthly fee and might rent as many movies as they want. Subscribers could keep them as long as they wanted, but then receiving only one film at a time. This model has proven to be successful and the company became very profitable in 2003.
DVDs wich were sent home in the characteristic red envelopes become the part of US culture. But there was Blockbuster, the biggest competitor. Netflix proposed them a purchase of 49% of their shares in 2000, but they laughed at them and refused to invest and probably still regrets. The company launched a similar service too late, in 2004. Six years later they declared bankruptcy, while Netflix already had 20 million users.
Meanwhile Netflix IPO took place in 2002. During the IPO they sold over 5 million shares of the company and its value raised  to almost 85 billion USD.
Few years later the company began to slowly move away from physical DVD format and loans. They saw the future of streaming videos much earlier than others.

An important event for company was to produce  their own tv show House of Cards in 2013. The website also won the exclusive rights to mamy others films and series and collaboration with  big studios. Now they are one of the most respected brands in the industry of film production and distribution.

It is said that Netflix is one of the most successful startups in history, and I agree with that. Netflix is from about a year in Poland and its doing very well. Reasons for this are relative small prices, the cheapest variant differs only 10 zlotys from the monthly fee for the Spotify Premium account and large number of films and TV series. I came to Netflix via PlayStation and while using its first free month I have watched a lot of movies and TV shows, which previously I did not know or had no opportunity to see them earlier. After one month I stopped subscription, because I knew that I would not have enough time now to use this platform. So, now in my case it doesn't make any sense to pay for it, but in the near future, it seems to me, that I'll restart my account, because it's definitely worth it. I think that this kind of servieces will end up the era of anarchy caused by piracy on the web. Nowadays, paying relatively small amount of money, we can use all sorts of good quality legal entertainment. So, yeah cosidering the fact that in the whole scale of the internet this kind of platforms could end up illegal usage of it, we are dealing here with another small step in another big thing. Piracy free internet sounds ridiculous, but we are heading in this direction, I'm sure about it.

What do you think about Netflix? Do you use it? Are you watching shows produced by Netflix?
Do you think it's worth to pay for it?

Personally I'm a big fan of Netflix productions. I have seen a lot of series for example Narcos, Stranger Things. I recomend these series very much for everyone. If you are big fan of watching TV series I think that monthly fee is worth it but I don't know how much it is exactly. It's interesting that they started by renting dvds. I didn't know about it. Personally I watch series on internet and on TV on HBO. For me HBO makes good series too. Maybe in the future I will buy Netflix.

They become sensation because of their ability to see the value in the market. People had choice to illegally download movie or buy dvd or go to cinema. Know you have platform with small monthly payment and with huge database of every movie, serial you want. They even produce their own, those serials have outstanding quality and in the future Netflix and companies "Netflix like" will consume almost all the movie market. They've got outstanding selection excluding newer movies, lots of tv shows and series and miniseries. good number of seasons for each show. it’s worth the money. if you are looking for newer movies and more popular series you would have to get the dvd sent from Netflix but it’s still a good deal.

Their content is simply awesome. Even if you're not a fun of a TV series format you should check out the third season of Black Mirror or at least their recent masterpiece Stranger Things.

I use a similar service for music (Spotify) and I would be glad to pay for content, but currently Netflix doesn't offer as much content worldwide as it offers withing the USA, so I'll wait for a while.

I think the answer to your question may differ from person to person. Whether a product is 'worth it' is relative. If you buy 'anything' and wind up 'never' using it, of course, you'll conclude it's not worth it.

For my entertainment needs, Netflix is a fantastic value. It offers a large catalog of movies, television shows, original content, and documentaries for a low price. I get a commercial-free experience and can watch shows on-demand in whatever amount I want.

I use Netflix and I'm happy, because the first month of use I have for free. The next you have to pay a small fee. Until now I watched three films.

I think that Netflix is awesome, because many people can watch their favourite shows in any time they want.
From all the shows prodeuced by Netflix, my favourite is Narcos.
I think that any kind of culture like cinema, theatre, shows and so on should be for free for everyone, so I don't think Netflix is one of those things that is worth paying for.

I have never use Netflix, but I plan to. I heard from freinds that series there are awesome and that everyone can find something. TV series that interets me the most as for now is A Series of Unfortunate Events, but first I want to "end" series I'm watching currently, otherwise I will never finish them.

Netflix over the last years has produced a number of series in which I fell in love.
BoJack Horseman, Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, Daredevil, Narcos, Stranger Things, and many others. After each episode I collect my jaw from the floor, because it makes such a huge impression on me every time. I think that the price for a premium account is not excessive, in addition, that you can split the price for 4 people. I think every TV shows geek will not regret the money spent on Netflix.

Netflix has actually made me stop watching regular TV. The amount of films and shows available on this platform is amazing. And also the quality of them makes it much better than downloading illegal films. Recently I have seen Stranger Things and Black Mirror there – both really worth watching!

I also really like the idea of having a reasonable price for using Netflix. I definitely think that it is worth paying for and I will keep on watching films and shows there as long as they keep current level of services or something better comes up.
Know one of their production called "Narcos" but I've watched it somewhere on Canal+, not directly on Netflix. There are currently lot of VOD services and produces on the market. On of their main competition is Amazon especially with Top Gear (currently known as Grand Tour) there. I'm mainly using VOD sport services - Eleven Sports is my favourite as they have La Liga. But in a nearby future I may try Netflix (especially that right now they have 3 months for free) but just out of curiosity.
That is very interesting article - I have no idea that they were starting like that. I'm an active user and I can say that it is a brilliant idea. It is simply, available almost everywhere - movies and tvseries are great, what more can I ask? :)
I've been using Netflix for some time now. It is pretty convenient to be able to watch a movie or a tv series anywhere. The only netflix productions I liked are Narcos and Stranger things. When it comes to price it's affordable, especially when you spread the cost across couple of people.
I'm not big fan of TV shows in general, so Netflix in fact doesn't affect me in any way, but I can see it's advantages and it's definitely for good and not for bad. I also didn't know about its history, so thank you for that, as it's always nice to learn something new.

Wow, the past of Netflix is really interesting and surprising. I personally don't use it, but I know the price is not that high and that it is useful to have a subscription. Maybe, I just haven't tried yet. I'm a very big TV-series watcher, probably I will use Netflix in the future.

Yes, I watch Netflix and I really enjoy it. In my opinion distribution of video and movies on demand is a very smart idea.
It is relatively cheap and yet you can have various movies and series available 24/7.
The only minus and disadvantage I can think of is that in Poland the offer is
much worse and narrow than in other western countries, which means that there are fewer movies and series to watch.
I have watched many series like: Narcos, Vikings, The Suit, The Fall, Stranger things and House of Cards.
Currently I do not have so much time but when I have it again I will definitely look for some more series to watch.

I have never used Netflix because I’m not a big fun of TV and TV shows. In my opinion it’s great idea for people who watch TV series a lot. It would be useless because I prefer spending my leisure time more productively for example: programming, reading books or meeting with friends.

I use Netflix and it is absolutely worth paying for it. Especially the subscription, which allows you to watch movies on 4 TVs/PCs/etc. at the same time. You can 100% legally share it with your family, or friends- so cost is not so big.

If I would have a bit more of free time, I certainly would buy Netflix account. I think that they have amazing choice of shows, most of witch are at least watchable. I think that services like Netflix will take place currently held by television in few years. It is just better, when you can choose what you want to watch and when you want. Actually I just wait for my master thesis to be over, so i can activate account and watch through Breaking Bad series!
I love Netflix and to be honest I use it almost every day.
The possibility to watch almost everything you want, at any moment or device is what brought me to this platform.
However my favorite thing about Netflix is their original series such as “House of Cards”, “Orange is the new Black” or “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and that they release all season in one day! I love binge watching so I watch almost whole season in one night.

I've never used Netflix because I don't have time enaugh to watch TV shows. In my opinion that was great idea but now we have many other options to watch those productions. Maybe if I would have more time to watch TV series, I would create/buy Netflix account.
I don't have a Netflix account yet, but like to watch good TV series on the internet. Regarding Netflix originals I've seen a few episodes of Narcos and House od Cards already. Both of them are really engaging. I plan to register Netflix account next week to try their 1 month free offer and after that period consider purchasing paid subscription.

Yes, it's true, these types of services are the future. Just look at polish sites of this type and how many of them are exist right now. Vod.pl, Ipla.pl, Cineman.pl, Strefavod.pl or Kinoplex.pl and so on. They have now large number of users numbering in millions and dynamically developing further. I am really impressed.

Wow, good to know that Netflix now has three months for free.It is true actually, Amazon is chasing Netflix and have a really good deal. I guess that Grand Tour alone is really good deal. I am not a big sports fan, but a lot of my friends actually uses Eleven Sports to watch football.

I love Netflix's productions. I'm a big fan House of Cards, and Narcos. But I still waiting for times when Netflix will be more attractive for polish customer. I think in future Netflix win with ipla (Polsat) or player (TVN), but they must have more titles available in polish language (for me subtitles will be enough).

Shame on me, but I still haven't found the time to make my own Netflix account. But I definetely would. The idea is great. Finally we can have the service, that everyone could afford.
I like their Tv-series, I have watched Narcos and Black Mirror. Now I would like to try House of Cards. And after this article I will find the time for sure to make an account.
Thanks for the interesting story:)
I love Netflix. If I wasn't addicted to watching movies and TV series I am now and I love it. Netflix is the easiest way to do it. And it is all legal. I have my account with my girlfriend and we can watch whatever we like. I have heard somethings about Netflix's success. Always you can find something for you there and this is a great website and genius! I watch so many things on Netflix that I can't even count it. And there are more Netflix Original movies and TV series and this is huge. Most of them is really great. I recommend Netflix to everyone!

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit.
