Week 11 [09.01-15.01] Canon or Nikon

All streets of big cities have advertisements, big and small, bright and dim, with lights or only a big paper. We pay a lot attention to some advertisements and pass by others. Companies have to capture our attention to their products, so they try to make bright and interesting advertisements. If we start thinking about the advertisement, it means a product will succeed. Canon is one of the most popular brands in photo cameras. Advertisements of this brand are in the top ratings of all advertisements in the world. They make us stop, think, and  analyze.

“Canon Cyber Shot.” Canon. Digital Image. Google Images. Web.

This picture has a very interesting story. This leopard was running; furthermore, we know that leopards run at railway speed. It is very difficult to take a picture of leopard, but still this picture is very sharp, even though this leopard was running very fast. The ability to stop a moment is the main point of Canon’s advertisement. They chose an interesting method to show a moment. A stop was made by using many tripods. Usually, tripods are used to stop some moments, but the camera is held by the tripod, not an object of photography.

This advertisement has a clear visual purpose. It shows that Canon can catch every moment, every piece of object, no matter how fast it is. It is not only one example of a Canon advertisement.

“Canon SX20 IS.”Canon. Digital Image. Google Images. Web.

When people
take their first look at this ad, they see only a picture; but when they look again, they can see a lot of sense in these advertisements.
The text in the picture says, “Let Your Camera See the World,” which means that we should take our cameras everywhere we travel. Figuratively, the camera cannot see the world, but we can; we can see it, and we can show it to everyone. William Lutz in his essay “With These Words I Can Sell Anything” said, “Every word in an ad is there for a reason; no word is wasted.” When I compared this citation with an advertisement, I saw something new in these words. This poster persuades us to travel with a Camera .While looking at this picture, people are thinking about traveling with a Canon camera.

Not only Canon but also Nikon make great advertisements. Nikon is the second most popular brand of photo cameras. They make advertisements very different from Canon, but still very interesting.
Nikon has a very popular phrase for their advertisements. At first, they used this phrase in some of their advertisements, but now they have changed the second part of it to relate it to their posters.

Nikon Coolpix Digital Camera.” Nikon. Digital Image. Google Images. Web.

A good slogan is a very important part of every advertisement. I read an essay of Bill Bryson “The Hard Sell: Advertising in America,” and found an interesting quotation: “Very early on, advertisers discovered the importance of a good slogan.” Even a hundred years ago, people understood that a brand has to have a memorable slogan. Nikon got it; however, Nikon made it better.
In this poster, we can see a man with his small daughter taking her first steps. Nikon transformed its slogan to link it with the depicted situation. Everyone knows that Neil Armstrong is the first person who stepped on the Moon. I can understand why advertisers compare the first steps of a child with the first steps on the Moon.

“I Am Nikon.” Nikon. Digital Image. Google Images. Web. 30 Mar. 2014.

We need photo cameras
to capture the moment: not only travels or beautiful places but also our everyday life. Smiles of children and parents, broken hands, precipitated teeth. All these things are very important for our life; however, we cannot save them all in our memories. I think that every family has to have at least one photo camera to save happy and emotional moments. Advertisements remind us about it; furthermore, they show us more opportunities to take great pictures.

Bryson, Bill. “The Hard Sell: Advertising in American.” Reading Pop Culture: A portable Anthology. Ed Jeff Ousborne. Boston: Bedford/ St. Martin’s. 2013. 120-35. Print.

  1. Do you think we still need DSLR cameras in our lives and why?
  2. Do you have a DSLR camera? If so, what brand is it?
  3. What brand would you prefer? Canon or Nikon?

I'm not a photographer and I got my camera as present - it is simple digital camera, but as for me it is fine.
I know that making photos with proffesional camera is easier and may give a great result, but c'mon - it's not only about a camera, it is mainly about skills of photographer. I know some people, who have got expensive DSLR cameras and always use "default" settings. Of course, photos are nicer, but I believe that it's not about it. There is so many possibilities and I believe that real photographers know most or every setting on their camera, becasue they were practising and looking for something new, something different.
I don't know which cameras are better - Nikon or Canon, because as for me both companies are well known and their products are mostly recommended, so I can't decide.
Nice article :)

I have got Canon DSLR camera but I'm not big fan of photography even though I took a lot of photographs and I finished photography courses. I think I know something about it. I think that we don't need DSLR cameras in everyday life because cameras in mobile phones are very good. For normal man it is enough. It's sad for photographers because today it is difficult to be photographer. I have Canon and I think I prefer it even though I've never had Nikon. For me both are good. People who have Nikon say that it is better but people who have Canon prefer canon. It's funny.

Unfortunately, the topic of photography is not one of my strongest. I think that DSLR cameras are great way of making the art of photography available to everyone with passion and focus. I do not have any camera, except the one in my phone. What I know for sure is that not always the one with highest number of megapixels is the best.
Yes, they make beautiful and great advertisements, the Canon and Nikon. These companies know that visualization of product performance it’s what will make people way it. I highly agree with the statements that Advertisements remind us about it; furthermore, they show us more opportunities to take great pictures.

Certainly for professionals or people really intrested in photography DSLR cameras are very imnportant. But for most people including myself smartphone cameras are by far good enough and they become better and better every year. I know nothing about those two brands in terms of how does their quality compare to each other (would expect high from both).

Photography is a small part of my life. I take a lot of photos not only during holidays, but also in everyday life. There are two cases to take a photos for me:

1. capture moments in some interesting places, with nice views, funny situations, family or friends meetings and so on... but primarily I love capture moments with my girlfriend who is perfect to take a photo - then I use mostly DSLR

2. Second case is to take a photo of notes or some information. Then I don't care so much about quaility because I just want to save things very fast. Then I use (as most people) my smartphone which is sufficient.

A lot of people ask me: "do you think we still need DSLR cameras in our lives?" or "come on, we have smartphones, we don't need cameras". I don't agree. Of course, smartphones are small, we have it all the time and take photos with good quaility, but it's not enough if somebody cares about it. Of course, there are programs, which try to follow such possibilities, but still it's not enough. For example, it's impossible to gain a deep of field using a smartphone. If I remember well, Apple try to put into new iPhone two cameras to reach such effect, but still in my opinion it's worse quaility and smaller effect than in DSLR.
So I can't imagine my life without my camera.

If we talk about brands - Nikon. Only Nikon. Just Nikon. Nikon is at the heart of the image.
Why Nikon? Because not Canon ;)
To be honest, I just like Nikon and the same - don't like Canon. Maybe it's a habit - ok, but still - Nikon ;) I just have equipment of Nikon and I'm really glad so maybe it's a reason.

I don't own a DSLR camera, nowadays smartphone cameras are good enough if you're not a professional, it's kind of funny when someone buys a professional camera for everyday use and makes photos in "auto" mode. Despite using the smartphone camera I'm aware of the continuous "holy war" of these two brands:)

I think that we don't need any DSLR cameras in our lives nowadays. To be honest, most of us don't need any camera at all, because everyone have it in smartphones.
I don't have any DSLR camera.
If I were to choose, I would like to try Canon. I have heard many great opinions about it from my friends and from people who test cameras and know a lot about them.
Unknown said…
I have a Sony DSLR but I seldom use it. I have a very good camera phone. Canon or Nikon... I don't know which i would choose. I'm not a professional, so I don't care.

Canon or Nikon, this is the eternal controversy. I prefer Canon than Nikon. The arrangement of buttons and interface are more intuitive for me. Of course canon and nikon takes great photos and it's only a matter of user predisposition. I have Canon 60D and I use them rather rarely because it's heavy and not compact. Cameras in smartphones are getting better and they are be enough for everyday use and more importantly, you can have it always with you. On the other hand photos from DSLR camera have better quality and you could take photos in RAW format so you can bring more details. As for the advertising of both brands, I think that they are great! :)
Unknown said…
Thank you :) Of course, everything depends of person who are buying and using the camera. But still, there are a lot of people who are always on one side and will never accept any other brand)
Unknown said…
Yes! I was the point! Both of them are good, but people who are using Nikon, for example, will never say that it could be worse that Canon. Also, I agree that in our times more useful is to have a good camera in your phone.
Unknown said…
I'm totally agree with you! I own Canon as well. When I was choosing my DSLR camera, I'vw read everything about Nikon and thought that I prefer it; hovewer, entering a real store and handling both of them I changed my mind in the opposide direction. Canon id much easier to handle and buttons are much intuitive.

I think that nowadays DSLR cameras are being pushed away by cameras provided in our phones. Everywhere I travel I can see less and less people using digital cameras instead of taking pictures with their phones. I can see that the quality of shoots taken with the phone is getting better and better each year, however to me in order to take a really great shoot you need a good camera, with changing lances. This is why the professional photography world keeps on using them. However I understand the idea of travelling with only one or two small objects instead of the whole backpack full of photography equipment.

I use an old Canon and I am really happy with it. I might be facing the need of getting a new one soon and I think that I will keep loyal to the company.

I honestly don't know which one I prefer, because the times I used to buy such cameras because I thought I'd use them have passed. Now I use only a GoPro or my phone to take pics while on vacation or on the daily basis, when I need it. I remember having both Canon and Nikon for a while, but I gave them away to my family members, so I guess I didn't need them :-)
Of course, such cameras have very specified functions which differentiate and help camera experts and photographers, but in my case it was not that I didn't use these options, but I simply didn't have the possibilities for it. When I travel, I prefer different solutions, as I mentioned above, and on everyday basis I don't need so developed and specified options and characters.
1) Yes, we still need them because they're making the best quality pictures - especially when we use Tele-LENS for them. You cannot make that kind of pictures with a Smartphone Camera but mostly for daily usage Smartphone will do.
2) I have one used mostly when traveling. It's Pentax K-R with two sets of LENS.
3) I've chosen Pentax - less commercials, good quality.

I believe that DSLR cameras are intended for professional photographers or enthusiasts. Personally I don’t feel the need to have one because I mainly use my phone to take photos. I can’t choose between these two companies because I don’t even use my phone camera that often so it would be pointless for me to invest in photography equipment.

We will need DSLRs as long as every lens has its own character. The point of using DSLRs, or mirrorless cameras is using great quality lenses which focus light onto sensor, which is a lot bigger than ones used in smartphone cameras. Bigger sensor equals bigger pixels (compared to sensor with same amount pixels). Bigger pixels produce image with less noise on it.

I'm at Canon's side. That's because of times, when video DSLRs were appearing at the market. Nikon was faaar away with video quality produced by their vDSLRs. At this time Canon 5Dmk2 was the king :)

Well, that is one focused article! I have to admit that I am total ignorant where it comes to photography. It is just not my thing. I like to take few photos on my trips, however i think that most important is keeping it in memory. I take photos with my phone, so here, you can start preparing stake for me.
I have Canon DSLR but to be honest I don’t use it very often. I mainly use it when I’m in some different place on holidays.
I think that most people don’t need DLSR camera, we all have cameras in our phones which is much more convenient than carrying separate bag with DLSR.
Even when I travel and have my Canon in the bag, I very often use my phone camera, because it’s much quicker than getting my DLSR from bag, and often I don’t really care about the quality of the picture.

To be honest I have no any experience in photography and camera in my smartphone is good enough but I know some photographers and they say "I'll never stop using DSLR camera".

I’m not good at photography and I prefer snapping photos by my eyes and save them in my memory. I know that memory is ephemeral, but if on this way these saved screens which we still memory aren’t even more important and beautiful? I never used Canon nor Nikon, so I don’t have any opinion in this case. I think that nothing can replace DSLR cameras in making deep, truly touching photos, but to do it, is needed a knowledge and experience. DSLR cameras have one flaw – are big, so for me it isn’t comfortable in travel.

I think that our smartphones can replace almost all other devices as well as camers. Nowadays they are ony needed for professionals.

I'm using Canon as well but only in times when I want to take some art-looking picture.

GoPro is a great solution for travelling! It's small and very useful. I realy like it as well.
Unknown said…
Pentax ia s great choice! Many times commercials just make products more expensive.
Unknown said…
High five for Canon! Their Mark line is just simply amazing.
Unknown said…
Most times I prefer to use my smartphone camera during trips as well. When you are exploring new places, it may be difficult to handle DSLR camera.

Well I'm not have big knowledge about photography. But when I see "I am Nikon" I was thinking about Mac vs PC, because there was very similar commercial campaign "I'm Mac". But Mac vs PC is not good comparison. I think that Coca-Cola vs Pepsi is more a adequate. Nikon and Canon are similar-sized firms. They have followers and I think only a few changes religion.
Unknown said…
I like the advertising of the both brands. But personally I prefer Canon. I have been using my DSLR for seven years and I still don't want to change it. Photography is my life and I can't imagine myself without it.
Sometimes I am to tired to take my heavy camera while traveling. That's why I have many cool pictures made by phone camera. And I believe that it is not very important to use only expensive camera to make the good pics. You are making it, not your camera. Of course if you are a professional you must use the best technologies, but for your pleasure you can use whatever you like. For example, I like to walk and make pictures with my old Praktika made in 1960's.

A lot of my friends are in photography as well as I am, a lil and from what I have learned from them and from other sources I know that in analog days Canon was more into sport and Nikon in fashion, portraits etc and overall they were doing better cameras. Now it is hard to tell which cameras are better. It depends on what you want to do. Firstly, lenses. Canon 30 years ago introduced a new standard in their lenses and today it is said that Canon lenses are rather better than the Nikons, especially the portrait ones, but the difference is not so big. In favor of Nikon, modern cameras can be attached to really old, cheap, but very good lens. Nikon cameras by the fact that they have a slightly different sensors are better at shooting landscapes. Canon certainly wins on the video side. Their cameras usually have more options for video recording and overall better image quality. Canon is also manufacturing professional cameras for filmmakers. Nikon in this matter has nothing interesting to offer what has caused, in recent years financial problems, because their customers began to move to Canon. I have Sony mirrorless camera and I am very happy with it. By the way, if you don't know Sony is manufacturing sensors for Nikon.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
