Week 10 [11.01-17.01] Silent disco

Source: https://fatsoma.imgix.net

Silent disco is a concept of a party where there is one or a few channels with different kinds of music and everyone has wireless headphones on, instead of listening to loud music played from the speakers system. When there are multiple channels there is a popular concept of making headphones blinking different colors of specified music type which makes it possible to join people grouping together dancing to one playlist without even talking or gesticulating. By that the final effect of that party is a lot of people dancing and having fun together with different vibes in complete silence. The concept was used on many festivals where there were numerous live DJ’s with different styles on each of the available channels instead of playlists prepared before the party began. It allowed a lot of people to quickly switch between those artists.

There are a lot of advantages of organizing party like that, the main one we can point out to be avoiding a problem with loud music especially in a  densely populated neighborhood or basicly fitting almost everyone’s mood and music taste at a big party but this kind of party is also limited to the specific type of people because for a lot this kind of partying itself can be boring - not everyone likes to go to a party to just dance but to talk with people which silent disco gives lack of. Also,  the scene of people expressing themselves in complete silence can be for some basicly strange. However,  there are studies that people can find great matches without words so perhaps the silent disco party can make great relationships with people connected only by their moves.

Silent disco had its reborn period a few years ago and now its popularity is growing limitlessly. Historically the concept was used by eco-activists in the early 1990s, they were utilizing headphones at outdoor parties to minimize noise pollution and disturbance to the local wildlife but the first draft of the idea has its reference in Astroboy's 1967 Japanese science fiction story The Summer of 1993, where the titular character attends a party where everyone is wearing headphones.

Nowadays partying like that can be not an obvious way to have fun with friends in a little bit safer way than a normal party using your own headphones, doing what you like and still wearing a mask and keeping distance from others.

  1. What do you think about this concept of  a party?

  2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

  3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

Comments

It was a few years ago when I first heard about silent disco. I hate dancing or going to the clubs, but this one felt like something different and I really wanted to try. I think that the idea of such parties was a great way to encourage people like me to take part in such events as it was shown as something new. I saw it happening a few times during the music festivals like Open’er or Orange Warsaw Festival, however the queues to get inside were terrible. I was trying to go there once, but I gave up after 20 minutes of standing in the queue. However, I know that such parties also take place in front of the palace of culture and there aren’t any huge queues, so one day I think I would definitely want to try it.

Nevertheless, I know that such parties also took place in 2020. I saw some videos of it and it made me really angry and disappointed in society. So many teengares, without any masks, are dancing all together in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. Pathetic. This is the thing that made me less excited about this event. I can’t believe that it’s organizers were so stupid to actually do it in 2020 and I just do not want to support them.

When it comes to the popularity of such events, I don’t think it will grow rapidly in the future. It is interesting and cool as it’s something new, however, it takes time to organize it, it needs people to organize it, so it isn’t and won’t be as popular as normal parties as they are just much easier to organize. Also, it might be cool if someone loves dancing and just wants to dance with friends. But when it comes to me, I like hearing music in the background but being able to talk with my friends at the same time, which I would not be able to do with the headphones on. In my opinion, there are more people like me who prefer to go to the place with music but also with a possibility to talk easily with others, than to put headphones on and just keep dancing.

The "Silent Party" is unusual since the music is conveyed by the headphones and not broadcast on the speakers. They have a wireless built-in system that transmits sound at a distance from the DJ remote. Each participant sets the appropriate volume with the aid of the unit, thus not causing discomfort to others. In addition, there is a chance to select music from 2-3 outlets, which satisfies listeners' preferences more. Music is only seen, but not perceived by the wavelengths of the speakers by the entire body, which many can only understand. Moreover, this arrangement of activities does not conflict with the occupants of surrounding homes, and they will sleep comfortably.

Yes, I been there. I'll be honest, at first, it was very odd. You go up there and there are people listening to something that doesn't feel like pop. Ah! Oh! And if you arrive as one of the stations plays a classic, such as 'Don't Stop Trusting' or 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' you get an earful of unisonous, horrible singing. It's quite hysterical until you get through the terrible singing. It's quite hysterical until you get through the terrible singing. I laughed a lot my first time... and even joined in the horrible singing because what you know with the headphones on is that a song you can't sing along to is playing in your ears because you can't help but belt out with it! Often silent discos can't be quite so silent, I suppose, for this reason.

It is something which is good to experience once but when it comes to popularity than , I think it depends on person to person. Some's like this kind of Disco some of don't. If you’ve hired a venue or you’re holding a party at home, there’s nothing worse than upsetting the neighbors. Silent discos are just plain fun. People are all in awe of their awesomeness, even though they're not a new phenomenon! Advantages and Disadvantages are behind all things. We can not make accurate estimation.
What do you think about this concept of a p What do you think about this concept of a party?

I think it’s a very interesting idea or concept for regular club parties. Chances for songs that you may not enjoy are low and so you can choose the music you want to party to. The idea for the color changing headphones is in my opinion brilliant. When I first thought about silent disco I felt like it is hard to enjoy something together, when people around doesn’t really know what is playing on your headphones. I didn’t know about such solutions for this particular problem so now I’m hyped a little bit. :D Although I think that such parties could be a little “cringy”. Regular, or standard parties have their good sides as well as many bad ones. On the one hand I used to party in the clubs and to be honest I was enjoying that dose of confusion created by loud music playing from the speakers. Going out from the building, sudden silence, cold air on your hot skin - amazing feeling. It could be irritating when you can’t hear anyone, communicate with your friends or simply think about anything. I get those Silent Disco parties, they seem interesting, healthier in some crazy ways I can see many pros for them and I get that they are solving a lot of problems generated by regular ones.

Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I’ve never been to a Silent Disco party. I’ve heard about them a lot, as far as I know they are organized near the Palace of Culture in Warsaw or in Hocki club. Many of my friends on Facebook feed were interested in such parties or even participate in ones, but I was never interested in such events. I’m quite loud person, I do love singing and the like. I don’t think that Silent Disco would work for me. I mean, maybe I would have a good time, but I don’t think that others could say the same. :)

Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

I’m sure it will grow, but I wouldn’t say rapidly. Now it’s getting more and more popular. You can enjoy similar events on many festivals, more and more clubs are organizing them. Even in my city Silent Disco took place, and it’s way smaller and located far away from Warsaw. :) I believe that popularity of this depends on the people. Some of them like it, some doesn’t. It is hard to estimate how many will fall for this. My guess is that they will get a lot more popular than now, but we will see how it turned out. :)
What do you think about this concept of a party?
I think it's a great concept. I very like going to clubs and when they arrange a silent disco it's a very nice change because it's something different than usual. I hope that a club party will be possible soon :(
Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
Yes, I have. It was great! It's very nice that there are different channels and you see what channel other people are listening to. But I wouldn't say that it's silent disco because the dancefloor can be very loud because of all people singing around :)
Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
I guess yes. It's because retro climate is getting more and more popular and so this silent disco concept isn't new then it's very likely.
1. What do you think about this concept of a party?

I think it's a very interesting kind of entertainment. Especially for millennials, it's something cool and new compared to traditional events. It seems to me that this type of entertainment is popular in large urban centers, it is not very popular in the countryside.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

Yes, I have been to such events several times before the pandemic. Honestly, I spent more time without headphones, drinking a beer on the side. It felt weird watching people dance and there was silence. The cool thing about these types of events is that they are outside in the summer. There is no music so it doesn't bother the locals.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

It can be tough as people will be much more wary now. It seems to me that the world after the pandemic will change a lot, the clusters of people will not be as popular as before. In addition, you will have to take care of additional disinfection of the headphones.

1. Honestly, I have no opinion on this subject. If someone likes the idea of silent disco, let them party like that, but it's definitely not for me.

2. Yes, I went to a silent disco once and my feelings were very negative. I had the impression that half of the people only went there because silent disco was fashionable at the time. I recommend that all silent disco fans listen to music on headphones at home. It's quite the same :)

3. I think the popularity of this type of event will drop to zero. It's neither fun nor interesting. I would compare it to eating in a restaurant with plastic cutlery. It seems to work, but something is wrong.

1. I believe it is violently overused and should be reduced.

2. I saw it from the distance and it felt strange. From my experience party isn’t just the music and dancing. It’s a specific social interaction, which can not be replaced with hust headphones and three DJs. It needs to be loud, a bit uncomfortable and weird. It is absolutely a must that people have to shout there in order to deliver any message. Otherwise it’s just a simulation of a artificial experience.

3. It won’t as it’s just simply becoming boring fast. People listen to music in their headphones all the time. The idea of gathering together in the headphones seems fresh and fun only in the beginning.

1. I think that it's cool. Like you can go and meet someone at this party and if you want to take a moment and talk to a person then loud music won't be a problem anymore. Plus this kind of parties is much easier to organize, because your neighbors won't be mad because of noise.

2. I am not a party person, yeah...

3. I think that loud party will still be the most popular thing, because it's more fun. But it's cool that technology is so affordable that there is such phenomenon as silent party is already around.

1. It seems interesting when viewed from the side. I really liked the idea of using silent disco in Netflix's "Atypical". In order for a boy suffering from autism to take part in a school disco (or something like that), it was decided to make a silent disco instead of playing music on the sound system. Thanks to this, the boy, who was oversensitive to loud sounds, could take part in the school event together with his girlfriend and friends from school. Also, it is not only some kind of fashion, it also has a practical application that can help people with various problems to attend the events.

2. Unfortunately, I've never been. I will probably go one day :)

3. I think so. It is already very popular. Every vacation I see a lot of people in front of the palace of culture or in the Savior Square, having a silent disco party. The big problem in running this type of business is that you have to constantly take care of the technical condition of the headphones, service them and probably buy new ones often.

1. What do you think about this concept of a party?
I think it's quite clever. Everybody can listen to the music they love and also have fun with people that have different taste in music. There is a possibility that it may look funny for "outsiders" as they enter the dance floor, take a look around and everyone is dancing to literally different type of music. You can look right - see balerina, take a look left and metalheads might be doing pogo. Feels funny at the first sight.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I've never been to that kind of party. I'm not really a type of person to go out on a disco dancefloor. But i know some peoeple that went there and they really enjoted it.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
Yes, definitely. The popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly as people tend to use headphones a lot. Why shoudnt they connect all the friends headphones to one player just to have their own party on a public dance floor!

1. I think it's quite unique! Who would think of having a party, bot only on your headphones? Personally, I like it very much. You could have a rager party, without your neighbours even knowing! Other massive perk is ability to switch between DJs. If I get tired of one set, i can instantly switch to other one, without even leaving the room. Awesome!

2. I was once. As I'm not too big of a fan of huge, loud parties, I really liked it. Beside being able to switch to faster/slower sets, I could always just take my headphones off and take a breather. That's way better than on regular parties, where even if I go to the bathroom, it's loud. So to sum up, it was just right for me.

3. It's tough question. On one hand, it definetly has a fighting chance to dominate party-world. It is silent for the neighbours, you can switch sets instantly and always take your headphones off to take a break. On the other hand, you have to wear hedphones (usually quite pricey) and dancing to one set, while someone in fornt of you dances to another, might look and feel pretty awkward.
What do you think about this concept of a party?

This is a new form of entertainment for me, I only heard about it last year. I have not yet had the opportunity to participate in this type of event. It is not something I like very much, but maybe I will change my mind when I take part in it myself.

Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I've never been to a silent disco party before. I saw last year during vacations when such a party was organized near the Palace of Culture. At first, I looked at it, because from a distance it looked quite strange, but interesting at the same time, that a large group of people was playing with headphones on their ears.

Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
I think there are definitely a lot of people who enjoy silent disco more than typical parties. Personally, I prefer those typical parties, but I am going to go to a silent disco this year if it is organized. As for the growth, I don't consider it as something groundbreaking

I love this concept of a party. I think that it is a great idea, that people can listen and dance to different kinds of music, but still be at the same party or in the same club. I like that you can listen to your music of choice quieter than at the regular party, or just take a break from loud noise and talk in silence.

I have been to the silent disco and I have truly enjoyed it. At first, I felt weird, especially without the headphones, but when I’ve put them on it was really cool and I liked the music choices I had.

I don’t think it will become any more popular than it is now. I personally can’t wait for when I will be able to go back to going to big, loud parties with a lot of people.

1. What do you think about this concept of a party?
I like parties like this. I was participating in many silent disco events in Warsaw. I find it very attractive, because I don't know how to dance very well and when I come across without headset I see people who are "dancing" without music. It looks really funny and when I am participating in this I feel more comfortable because everyone for the others looks "weird". I recommend everybody to at least try it once. It would be a worthy experience. I would like to add that there if you are worried that there won't be playing the music you really like. There are often few channels to switch between some techno disco etc.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
Yes, I have been at silent disco party. It was really good and as I said in the first answer, I would recommend to try it if somebody already didn't. It was great. I am usually going with my friends and every time we have a great time.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
I don't know. I used to say YES. But now in Corona virus times I can't say if it is going to be more popular. I think Covid-19 changes our way of spending free time and one day it will go back to "normal" "casual" days, but in the nearest future I think it would not come as fast as it should be.
1. I think this is a great solution to modern problems. But in fact, I remember that this concept was already invented and used in old US films from the 2000s.

2. No, I have not had the opportunity to visit such a disco. But I think it would be with pleasure if I found out that such a party will take place in the city.

3. I think that it will not grow very popular. But as something individually and completely different, it will continue to exist. Since the concept and the idea itself are quite interesting.
1.What do you think about this concept of a party?
In my opinion, this concept of the event is very cool. This is something completely different than the parties known for many years. This means that it is a great way to recruit young people to play. Traditional dances are known from the times of our parents and our grandparents and their formula has been the same for all these years. Only the music changed. I think it might have put people off looking for modern entertainment. I think a silence disco can encourage young people to look for modern entertainment.

2.Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I have never been to a silent disco. More to say, I've never heard of a disco like this before. Therefore, I would like to thank the author of the article for providing interesting information. I think that after the pandemic I will be interested in this form of fun because you can meet valuable people there and spend a nice time in an original way.

3.Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
I am convinced that silent disco will be steadily gaining in popularity. Eventually a form of play appeared that was not like our parents' play. We, the young, are looking for our own forms of spending free time and we want to separate ourselves from traditional ways of having fun. I am especially curious how to dance in front of a person who listens completely to different music on the headphones. It must be very funny when we move at completely different rhythms.
1. What do you think about this concept of a party?

I think it's a good fun concept from time to time. Everyone on this party, no matter who likes what kind of music. Everyone can have fun together. I think someone who came up with this idea did a good job.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

Yes. I was at this party once and had a great time. I was able to play with people who were listening to the same music as me and with people who were listening to something different. I recommend everyone to go to this type of event at least once.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

Hopefully there will be more places of this kind. Although I don't know if it could become very popular. Everyone goes to places with music that suits them. But it is definitely a nice solution for good integration of people with different musical tastes. By the way, you can discover some nice music.
What do you think about this concept of a party?

I have never heard about that before, I think it looks a bit strange for me, being on a party but at the same time hangout alone. It might be a very good as you mentioned you wouldn't bother your neighbors and you can listen to your preferred music.

Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I have never been and never heard about that before

Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
Maybe, with current situation I think most of young generation would accept any kind f party, me as well.
I think they will find their audience but think it would so mass popular.
As for me I would try it, just to know what it is

What do you think about this concept of a party?

Last year I had an opportunity to attend this kind of party and I must say that I am a big fun of that concept. As a teenager my friends and I always had a problem with finding a place where we could dance to good music. I remember that it was very frustrating. The idea of Silent Disco is solving this problem in many aspects. It is easier to satisfy more people and thanks to at least two channels of music you can change it and you don’t have to wait for another song.

Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

I’ve been to a few silent disco parties. I remember that at first I had to get used to the fact that I am dancing with headphones on my head. I also remember how funny people dancing in silence looked. Nethertheless, I quickly found out that it is great fun.

Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

I can see how the popularity of this kind of party have grown recently. A few years ago silent disco was rather unknown. In summer 2019, there were silent disco almost every weekend and every time there were a lot of people, who sometimes had to wait in a queue to get their own pair of headphones. Even this year, despite the pandemic and its restrictions silent discos were organised.

It’s kind of strange party but the concept is good for a big company where everybody can have different taste, also I think about the opportunity for small talk when a party is going on, I didn’t think about this advantage before you mentioned it.
I have never been at silent disco coz I don’t like a party, loud places make me a bit nervous, moreover crowd of drunk people make me stressed, but this kind of parties looks nice, and maybe one day I will join it.
I guess so, I really think I would like to join a party like this with my girlfriend, we like different kinds of music and this way fix all our issues.

I think silent disco is an interesting idea and a nice diversion from normal parties. The fact that everyone can choose their own music and all the time have fun to the best songs is great. Plus the fact that I can sing (I definitely sing very badly) and no one can hear me is definitely a plus.

I have been to silent disco a few times and it was very cool. Although I'm not a person who loves clubs, so I wasn't there long. Silent disco's are also often more expensive due to the fact that you have to rent equipment, which for me is a disadvantage because I'm definitely a budget person.

I don't know if such parties will become more popular, maybe in the next generation they will have their renaissance. Among my friends they definitely had their 5 minutes of popularity already. Especially in the times when we went to festivals like Opener.
1.What do you think about this concept of a party?

Personally, I have nothing against this type of event. However, I don't think I would feel comfortable being at such an event. I think subconsciously I would know that the music is only on headphones and from other people's perspective it might look weird. In my opinion, if someone likes this kind of party, then why not. I just don't see myself at such a party.

2.Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

No, I've never been to a silent party and I don't think I'd be interested.

3.Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

Honestly I have no idea, maybe after all now everything is developing more and more and for young people this type of event can be something new, something interesting. However, in truth I do not even know how many people go to such events, perhaps in the future one day I will be interested in this.

I think this is great idea for outdoor parties or clubs located near places where people live. The best part of this idea is that you can choose between (usually) 3 DJs playing different songs. Headphones used on such parties are well equipped, they play well, and you can adjust the volume which is very useful. Every DJ is playing on different channel marked with some colors, so you can see who people are listening to. I was at silent disco only twice and we had great fun with my friends both times. We really enjoyed that parties and we had a huge fun with showing our headphones colors with each other so that the rest could join channel we were listening to. Silent discos are already very popular, and I think that more clubs and events will use this solution.
In my opinion this concept is quite a good idea because a lot of people can have fun, dancing and listening to their favourite kind of music, different then others. So it lets people meet together even if they don’t like the same genre of music.
I have never been to a silent disco, but few of my close friends were. They told me it was quite interesting and fun, but the only disadvantage of that is that you can’t really talk to each other. If you want to, you need to take off your headphones but then all vibe disappear, because you don’t hear music anymore.
To be honest, I think it’s a great idea, but I’m not sure if this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future. I think it will be quite popular, but not as one of the most common kinds of parties.

1. This is a really interesting project. The fact that you listen to music and party with other people without disturbing others seems like a really cool idea. I was watching a movie on Netflix where a person who was hearing too much noise was getting annoyed, so they came up with this idea for him to do a school party with headphones. That way that person could participate as well. This show is called Atypical. By the way, I recommend it if anyone hasn't watched it yet.

2.Personally I have not been to such an event, but I saw once that a few people were walking around with such headphones , and I asked one of the group what it was about. And exactly as described above ... The color meant a genre of music and everyone who had headphones in this color had the same music as another person.

3. My thoughts are that it will never be that popular. Of course, there will be places where you can use it and very well, but I think that the classic clubs or events will remain more popular, if only because of the cost of such an event. Anyway, I think it's an interesting initiative and I hope that it will stay with us for a long time. Maybe one day I will have the opportunity to use it... :)
1.What do you think about this concept of a party?
I think it's great! Everyone gets to enjoy the music they prefer in the company of other people, just like in a regular club. It might be somewhat more dangerous due to the fact that other sounds are muffled by the headphones, but when you go clubbing, it's more about having fun, really.

2.Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
I've never been to that kind of party. I wish I'll get the chance someday, but now with the pandemic situation we're in, it's hard to tell when will those parties happen.

3.Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
It's hard to tell, really. It's obviously a lot easier to get out and talk with other people at a silent disco, compared to a regular disco. It surely has its benefits, but the old-school way is, I think, still more popular and favored by the majority of people.

What do you think about this concept of a party?
I think, it is pretty interesting concept, something new, uncommon. It looks a little bit strange, party without loud music and people with headphones. The biggest advantage is fact that everybody can have other type of music, and listen to own favourite hits.

Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?
Nope, i havent been to silent disco party. It sound pretty interesting and i hope after Covid, i will have a chance to try and see on my own.

Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?
I'm not sure if rapidly, but i guess it will be more common, and more and more people will be taking part in disco party. People are looking for a new impressions and i think silent disco party is good oportunity.
1. What do you think about this concept of a party?

I like that concept of a party. The host of that kind of the party do not disturb any of the neighbors and everyone can listen the kind music they like. At this type of event you may look weird as well as interesting for other people, so I don't think it's a big problem.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

I was at that kind of a party few times and I really liked it. When I was first time at Silet Disco party I was with my friends and all of us were curious about it. We know we could listen to different types of music served by several DJ's so we know it should at least be ok. And it was so I have good memories about Silent Disco.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

It may grow in the areas where neighbours are complaing on loudness, but is it replace "normal" parties with loud music? I don't think so.
1. What do you think about this concept of a party?

There are obviously some advantages, for example: everybody can choose the type and genre or music they would like to listen to and obviously there is not a lot of noise around the area where the party takes place. However, in my opinion it is not as great as it seems to be. There are some disadvantages like weird silence while taking the headphones down or people screaming sometimes, which is really irritating or even small things like weirdness of people dancing just to the different pace.

2. Have you ever been to a silent disco party? How was it if you did?

I was a couple of times, because after one of the Open'er Festivals it became very popular for a couple of months. Like I wrote in my previous comment, I was not really amazed by this type of party. Firstly, I was a little bit excited, but after a couple of minutes I was really disappointed. Furthermore, when you take down the headphones, you can hear only some weird noises without any music. Maybe silent disco is just not for me.

3. Do you think that the popularity of this kind of party will grow rapidly in the future?

To be quite honest, I really do not think so. In my opinion it really is not what people expect from parties. You can really listen to your favorite music during the house parties so I do not expect that it will suddenly and drastically change parties around the world.

1. Once upon a time I was on a party like that one and it was quite unusual experience. The colors help you in recognizing who is listening to the same music so it's easier to vibe with people. For me the concept is great, it's something different than the normal party in the club.

2. Yes I have been on several events like silent disco and I was getting fun of it. Different music that you can switch, but it was quite strange feeling when you take off your headphones and you see people vibing in a complete silence.

3. I think that this kind of party is a good substitute of normal parties but it will never become more popular than regular parties in the club, festivals or concerts. In my opinion they popularity of them will grow up.
