Week 5 [30.3-05.04.20] Should we eat bugs?

Eating insects hasn't reached acceptance in the West yet. To most people, eating bugs or insects in general is something to eat on a dare or novelty while traveling. However, bugs feed over 2 billion people a day and most of us don't know that changing our eating habits might be good for the environment as well as our health.

How is that? Learn from the video below:

Questions:
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

Comments

1. Yes, I was aware that insects are part of the diet of people, but not I was aware that it affects many people. It certainly is interesting topic. However, as people, we should be careful what we eat. Coronavirus was caused by eating an infected bat.

2. No, I haven't had the opportunity to eat an insect in my life. I disgust them a bit, all in all, if I'm not forced, I will never eat something like that.

3. Yes, I know that insects have a large amount of protein in themselves. However, I have never considered adding it to my diet. As I wrote earlier - I loathe insects.

1. Yes, I was aware of that. Eating insects isn’t unusual in some countries. I believe that this habit may be due to a lack of other food in the past, people in this way tried to avoid hunger.

2. I've never tried to eat any insects and I'm not going to try, unless life force me to do it. I'm afraid of my stomach's reaction.

3. Insects have a lot of nutritional value but I don't think it's a good idea. In my opinion, it’s hard to switch the body to a new type of diet from day to day, besides, I think that such sudden changes are unhealthy. Although in the age of coronavirus it may turn out that we’ll be forced to change our eating habits.

1.
It isn't completely new to me, but I never did show any active interest in that topic.
In the less developed locations around the world, bugs could be the only good source of rich proteins in food.

2.
As most people in Europe, I have not. I am not a very adventorous type of person when it comes to trying out new weird food, so I don't plan on doing that in the near future.

3.
The same answer as above, I'm a little grossed out by eating animals as a whole, so I think I won't consider that an nutrtition option for me.

1. I had no idea that bugs are to this day part of diet, but I was aware of the fact that people used to eat all sorts of insects and that it is popular to this day as some kind of tourist attraction in Asian countries. I think it is also really popular in Mexico, where you can taste hundreds of different types of these “snacks”.

2. No, I have never. And I don’t think I would ever want to do so. I find them a bit repulsive, even though I must admit I’m a bit intrigued how they taste. Nevertheless, I try to avoid eating meat, so I don’t think me trying to eat an ant or a worm is something that can happen in the near future. There is one thing that I WOULD NEVER EVER eat, even for 1.000.000 dollars – spiders. Gosh! These creatures are not only hideous but also hairy! Seriously, even when I’m writing it, I can feel these hairy legs coming down my throat. YUCK!

3. No, I don’t think so. Maybe if doctors said it’s recommended to do so, or I wouldn’t have anything else to eat … But as I said before, I try to avoid eating meat as much as possible. Unless when they would force me to eat a spider, I guess I would die of starvation then.

I don't think eating bugs can be as dangerous as eating other animals, e.g. bats which you've mentioned. I might be wrong, but I assume that since eating insects is so common and a usual part of a diet of such big number of people, I think it can be considered safe.
Agnieszka Duda said…
As far as I know bugs are basically proteins and a little of fat, so I'm not sure if it would cause any "side effects", even to someone whose diet doesn't neccesarily consists of them.
Answering your questions:

1. I knew that bugs are a diet. But that they are the diet of millions of people - I didn't know that. This information made me slightly shocked.

2. No, I've never had a chance to eat an insect and I think that for all the treasures of the world I wouldn't do it.

3. As I mentioned above - no.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I totally agree. The idea of having a piece of huge and hairy spider in my mouth, or basically anywhere in my sight makes me wince.
Agnieszka Duda said…
Reading your answers made me think how do vegetarians and vegans feel about eating insects. I've met a few vegeratians who allow themselves to eat animals, which they don't consider "intelligent", such as shrimps or fish in general (but not octopus!!). I wonder if any of them would be also fine with eating a bug.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I was also quite surprised when I first found out about this, 2 billion people makes over 25% of world's population (!!)

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes, just like other types of animals that in Europe aren't seen as such. Bats for example ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), but now for real, snails where eaten across Europe, even in Poland it was a delicacy for nobilities. I've heard about customs of eating spiders and beetles long ago though I never remembered the countries where they do so.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
Yes, a friend at work one day came with some South Africa fried bugs that they eat. Many people says it is sweet and spicy, but I couldn't get over to eat it.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Not sure, maybe I would get over it for some of them if I would first try them in a restaurant or so, but not for the majority of them. I would like to try grasshoper or dragonfly though, don't know why though.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes, I know that fact. But I could not even imagine that there are so many different ways to cook insects and that bugs are so healthy for people. They have high vitamin content loads of healthy minerals and protein.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No, I have never had a chance to eat any kind of insect. I can’t even imagine if I can eat some kind of bug. Now it is very popular in many shows to try dishes from beetles, maggots or worms. And none of the participants had ever said that it was tasty.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
I think I would not add bugs to my daily diet. I am a fastidious person and I dislike all these insects. But I was surprised by how many different dishes you can cook from insects, even some desserts.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I think it's seasoning that made them sweet and spicy. I've heard that bugs themselves tend to taste rather nutty, which is told to be caused by the fats they naturally contain. Anyway, I hope you'll get a chance to try grasshoper or dragonfly to form your own opinion :)
Agnieszka Duda said…
I agree, the number of dishes you can prepare with insects is really astonishing. There actually are some websites and cookbooks dedicated to bugs recipes only. One company even offers "bug box" subscription which comes with some edible bugs and instructions on how to prepare them or one-off buys for those who want to give them a try.
I knew that people eat bugs, but I didn’t know that they do it in such big amounts. I have never had a chance to eat any kind of insect before. But even if I did, I would never be able to do it. I hate bugs very badly. Spiders are the worst, but all other bugs are totally disgusting as well. To be honest I can’t really look at them for a longer period of time, not mentioning eating them. I think if I would try to eat any I would puke before even be able to swallow it. For me it doesn’t matter how healthy they might be I would never try it. Not even if they would give You superpowers, for me they are just too much disgusting.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?

The question is rather "Should we eat this?" It tastes good, but we grew up in a culture where insects have never been eaten, so I don't think that these are some particularly needed ingredients for our body, as the breeder is trying to present, since we survived thousands of years without it, after all, let's not hide the fact that it's hard for us to switch to eating bugs. If the Mexicans don't eat pickled cucumbers, considering them rotten, then we don't have anything to eat locusts.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
When I was abroad in thailand, I tried to try how the worms samakaya, but it's not my favorite food. In Poland, I ate Mayan cockchafer soup.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
That's how I read about it: Domestic fly pupae contain more than 60% of proteins with human-specific proportions of amino acids: arginine, lysine and methionine. They also contain large amounts of fatty acids: linoleic (omega-6) and linolenic (omega-3).

1. I knew that bags are a popular component of the Asians diet. I saw recordings from the streets where huge spiders and beetles were sold.

2. I have never consciously eat insects. However, during sleep, certainly not one spider got into my body. However, if I were to decide on a dish at the restaurant, I would prefer something less crunchy.

3. I wouldn't hesitate if they were ground. The ideal situation would be if the powder was placed in capsules. However, hard-shelled or hairy worms disgust me the most. And I wouldn't be able to swallow them even if they were cooked in sauce and with vegetables.
Agnieszka Duda said…
Thank you for your comment. But doesn't the fact that they are dead when eaten makes the whole idea a little bit bearable for you? Though to be honest, I don't really know how would I react when actually given a chance to try a bug.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I'm not saying that insects should be essential part of our diet, we should rather consider them a substitute for sources of proteins and other nutrients. Especially knowing that they are not that commonly eaten in this part of the world, because of which they are quite difficult to buy and also a little expensive.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I really like the idea of consuming grounded bugs! I've just googled it and you can actually get vanilla or chocolate flavoured cricket protein powder.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?

Yes, I know that many people around the world eat worms or insects because they contain a lot of good protein. Especially people living in Asia, Australia, Oceania or South America. It is said that hunger people will eat everything. And so it was on these continents but not only. In Europe, delicacies (e.g. locusts) prepared by Chinese chefs have been sought after for years. Today they are generally available and can be eaten.
Personally, I ate not only locusts or grasshoppers but also frogs and snails, seafood etc. and I'm live You have to, I think so try everything.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?

Look up. This is how a friend brought insects prepared for food from China, where her son lived and studied. You can eat and continue to live after them. Some eat snakes, and some horses!

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

In Poland, probably not. Well cooked, however, are hard to get. In Asian countries, I would probably include them.
1. Yes, I was aware of that. I read some Bear Grylls' books in which he mentioned how he ate worms. Maybe I did not think directly that it is a diet of millions of people, but that could be easily deducted.

2. I can't remind myself of such an opportunity, but I believe I tried it.

3. Yes, why not. But I would have to be sure that these are of good quality, let's say, the quality that they could be sold in shops. But I would have some strange feeling of eating these small legs like it was mentioned at the end of the video. I'd rather eat all kinds of worms than flying creatures.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Thanks for the video, very interseting and informative:)I didn`t know that it is that popular. I thought that it is rather exotic and rarely eaten, however I new that it is quite popular in some Asian countries and it is used in a daily ration.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No and I would not like to try it. May be If I didn`t know what exactly I am eating. However, even idea of this is a bit disgusting, these are rather prejudices, probably if the majority of people ate bugs, I would eat bugs as well as it would be a food tradition then.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
After watching this video I see that it is rational to add bugs to my daily diet. We would save a lot of natural resources:) We need to spread this idea further I believe, people should know all the benefits of eating bugs:)
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
I've heard that worms are eaten in many Asian countries. The most interesting fact is that
they are fine and apparently have a lot of nutritional properties. I once saw a television program showing dishes of worms
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
I did not have the opportunity and probably do not want to eat them. For me personally it is disgusting but sure
you have to break
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Ahh, it's hard to answer. If I had mixed it well and could not see the worms, maybe I would break
Hello, here are my replies to your questions!

1. Yes, I knew about that although they're not part of my diet and I do not plan to ever change that. Unless I would be starving, that is. Heck, who knows what will happen next with the current Coronavirus situation - maybe we will be forced to feed on the bugs anyway (hopefully not).

2. I don't recall ever trying insects. I have tried snails (and they were actually pretty okay) but I don't think that they count. I could try eating insects but only once just out of curiosity. Other than that, I wouldn't want to have them as a dinner.

3. Nope. I can get those resources from other sources which are definitely more delicious and better looking.
Agnieszka Duda said…
To me, worms are much more disgusting than bugs. The idea of it exploding in my mouth triggers a gag reflex in me. I think I would rather pick out a bugs leg of my teeth.
Agnieszka Duda said…
Yeah, it's nearly impossible to get them in Poland. I found only two online shops that sell them, but one of them was totally out of stock. I'm not sure if it is due to lack of supply or demand. If available - they are quite expensive, approx. 20-70 pln for 15 gram (!!)
Agnieszka Duda said…
I was also quite surprised when I first found out about all these environmental benefits we could achive from switching from eating meat to eating bugs. Some sources say that "producing" 1 kilo of edible bugs pollutes earth with 40 times less CO2 than producing 1 kilo of lamb. Only fish farming is more environmentally friendly.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I think the main reason they had no taste is the lack of seasonings used in production. Most worms of bugs don't have much taste themselves, it's the spices that make them tasty.
Agnieszka Duda said…
I agree, for most people eating them would much more bearable not knowing that they're actually one of the ingredients
1. I was not aware of amount of people whose daily diet it is. I knew that people eat bugs.
2. I had a chance when there was an ant in my food but I didn’t try it.
3. First I must try how they taste and I’m really curious of it. I don’t think I’m disgusted by them and If they taste well I may add them to my diet
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Nope it really suprised me. I don't find it disguisging and I would even try this diet.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No, but as I said before I would give it a try. I am not afraid of eating any kind of food and I always try to expand my culinary horizons.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Well, no. I would stick on vegetables and fruits and other also rich in values things to eat. Maybe if someone would prepare such meals for me I would give it a try for diet like this.
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes I knew that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people like for example in India you can buy them on street stall fresh and moving or baked ready to eat on the spot just like we can buy hot-dogs or hamburgers but what to do they don’t eat cows so they found a replacement maybe not better but always some.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
I never had a chance to eat any kind of insect (well at least not intentionally) and I probably never will try… or maybe… well there were some dip fried that didn’t look to bad so maybe there would be some that I would try out of curiosity like tarantula or maybe scorpion but nothing alive.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
I don’t think so maybe I would try some out of curiosity, but I would never ever consider adding them to my daily diet no matter what nutritional values it has unless there is no other choice.
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes. I heard about it that in asia a lot of bugs in many regions are a delicacy.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
I have once eaten a Grasshopper hot spices. It was something like eatings chips. I kinda liked it.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
I would totaly try to eat them if i would know that they would be prepared correctly. I like trying new tastes and something like bugs dosent disgust me at all.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?

Yes, I was aware of this fact. It is actually almost equally odd to include/not include bugs in the diet taking into consideration how many people actually eat bugs on daily basis.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?

I wish I had. I would definitely try it, no matter which bug would it be. I just had doubtful pleasure of swallowing some bugs while riding on the bike. I think that can still count.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

Rather not. It is something that I would try a couple of times rather than eat it regularly. There are much more pleasant sources of nutritional values than bugs.
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes, I have heard that in some countries insects are part of traditional food. A good example are people from the Indochina Peninsula. They eat locust. People from this countries grilling or frying meat of this insects.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
I have never had a chance to eat any kind of insect. I am very happy about that.
I couldn't eat any insects because I loathe them. That's stronger than me.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
For some people maybe its a good idea, but for me not. I don't like insects.
I know it's possible that when I try some of them I may think that they are delicious. However, I must not know that I eat insects because when I think that I could eat them then I'm sick.
1 / Yes, I think I knew about it but did not attach much importance.
2 / No, I didn’t have such a chance, and since I don’t really like insects, they will probably appear in the future.
3 / No, never and ever.
1. Yes, I've visited Thailand and seen plenty of those on the street markets.

2. I ate ants once, somebody brought them back from an Asia trip. They were fried and very crispy but didn't have much taste. I don't remember the details to be honest.

3. I don't eat meat now and I would count bugs as such but back in the day, I could add them to my meals. I was always very culinary curious. As a kid, my favourite foods were: caviar, green olives and blue cheese. I was never scared to try something new.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of a diet of millions of people?

Yes, worms are a delicacy for 113 countries around the world. Insects can be a source of wholesome protein, and their cultivation has no negative impact on the environment.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?

I haven't had the opportunity. If one day I visit a country where such delicacies are eaten, why not?

3. Being aware of the nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

Worms have nutrients important for humans. They are a rich source of protein and vitamins. Insect blood contains large amounts of mineral salts.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Of course! It's impressive, how many recipes they have invented to prepare any kind of bug. Other than food, they are also connected with aphrodisiacs around the globe.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
In the place called 'Nocny Market'. I tried big larvas and they were quite tasty, although I didn't liked their consistency. Ah this night was really crazy (I also tried bulls balls that night, and they were even better than larvas).

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Why not! Protein, protein and once more PROTEIN!
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
I knew that people eat bugs but I didn’t know the scale of it.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
In Rwanda, there is a period of the year where some insects called grasshopper are everywhere most around the lights and sometimes people cook them and eat them. and it is quite delicious.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
I'm not considering eating bugs daily because I'm not aware of which ones are eatable or not and the ones I know are eatable I don’t know where to find them.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes I know about this, I have chance to eat it, but it is too disgusting, I don't even want to touch them, anyway, if anyone is going to try to eat bugs, please watch Bear Grylls series first for safety.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
Yes, I actually ate it when I was young, it was a dish about egg and bugs, I ate it beacuase I didn't notice it was bugs inside...anyway, it tasted good! haha! but I can't overcome my fear to eat more bugs anymore.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Again we should watch Bear Grylls series first for safety, in case we will eat some bugs that are not eatable, but I don't want to eat bugs anymore no matter how good nutritional values it has, it is too disgusting.

1. Yes, I know, it's a wide-spread fact and depends only on culture and I think types of bugs in an area. And other animals too. Bugs are a great opportunity for example if there are no big herbivorous animals around your village.

2. Unfortunately, no. I think I would try not all of them but a spider or a scorpion. Yeah, there aren't in fact bugs, but you get the point. Maybe I would not like to taste cockroaches. It can be only my cultural beliefs about them but these beliefs are strong enough.

3. Yeah, why not. But they must be: 1. Not less tasty than meat dishes. 2. Not more expensive than meat dishes. Two simple rules and my diet don't mind them.

1. I realize that people around the world eat insects and it's quite popular. I think if you're raised in a culture where it's normal, it's not weird. I think it's like eating meat or frogs or snails.

2. My mother brought dried bugs (it's a snack like peanuts) from Mexico, but I didn't dare try it. I'm a little regretful, but I hope I' ll get a chance.

3. The hard question is, I don't think I can get used to eating bugs. But who knows what's gonna happen? I couldn't imagine not eating meat in the old days, and now I'm a vegetarian.
1. Yes, I knew about that many people replace meat with insects, as they are rich with protein. Insects are a daily diet in some cultures, while in other cultures this is considered a delicacy.

2. No, fortunately I haven't tried any kind of insect. I wouldn’t even want to try.

3. No, despite all the nutritional values of buggs, I would not be able to eat this. I think that food should be more or less edible to eat it.
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
I only knew that bugs eating is really popular in Asian countries like China, Japan etc.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No and I probably never will unless there will be a situation of life risk, I hope not.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
No, never. Bugs disgust me and even thinking about eating them feels horrible to me.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
I was on survival camp once when I was 12. Part of it was learning how to survive in the forest and we were all obligated to it some bugs/insects/worms that we found behind a bark on trees. Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
Why not! If they would be easly accessible in shops with a fair price tag on them I could consider it :)

1. Of course. Chinese for example eat literally everything they can lay their hands on.

2. Yes, I ate some kind of japanese caterpillars. But they were probably overcooked, because they were empty, too crunchy and with almost no taste at all...

3. Depending on how they are prepared. Snails are considered delicacy in France, for example.(I know that snail is mollusk, not bug)
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?

I have heard about it and that actually sounds very reasonable. Some tribes actually might face some problems with finding enough food for their people so using any source of additional protein sounds like a really smart thing to do.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?

3. No, I haven't. I wouldn't like to try it neither. Eating something so small that used to be alive seems like a little bit of misunderstanding. I have heard that there is an opportunity to try some delicious insects at Atelier Amaro but no matter how much would it cost and how fancy it might be - it does not interest me.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

No way. I don't know what would such insect have to cure for me to eat them regularly. I guess that they would have to give me some kind of super powers or cure the worst diaseases to make me interested.

No, I haven’t and I am not going to.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?

Nope, I am vegetarian.

1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
I knew that in some part of the Earth, few nations still make dishes with bugs, but I didn't expect it would be millions of people.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No, not really But I heard about theory, that in a lot of products (e.g. chocolate) there are included some parts of insects. So if that's true, most of us have had a chance.

3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
No, I wouldn't. Thinking about it is just too disgusting for me. And if they aren't well prepared, they can be a threat for our stomach.

I always have a change when I go outside. But seriously, I haven't and I would never eat any bug, insect or anything of that kind. I abhor every kind of bug.

1. Yes. One time, during a conference, years ago I met a polish guy who started a world company hat produces bugs to eat. For that time I was shocked, but he explained to me how necessary it would become in the future and there we are- Jakub was right.
2. Not now. I’m preparing for that while traveling through Asia.
3. Yes, if it would be tasty :)

I was aware that many people eat bugs on a daily basis but I wasn’t aware of the huge number of them.

2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?

2.Aside from times they flew into my mouth and I swallowed them, I didn't.

3. Yes, I try to eat healthy and the taste of the food doesn't really matter to me, so I would be more than keen to add bugs to my diet.
1. Did you know that bugs are a part of diet of millions of people?
Yes, I've seen some YouTube video about how much meat do we eat and the bug diet was presented as one of the alternative.
2. Have you ever had a chance to eat any kind of insect?
No. But I would like to try it, if well prepared. At least eating those bugs wouldn't cause another pandemic.
3. Being aware of nutritional values of bugs, would you consider adding them to your daily diet?
If I would like the taste of them - definitely yes. But I would never ate them raw, it would be disgusting.
1.Yes, I knew that in many countries people eat worms. For example, in Colombia, Mexico or Thailand.I also think that the preparation and eating of worms is becoming more and more common and maybe soon we will be able to taste bugs in Poland.

2.No, I never had a chance to try a worm, but if I had a chance, I think I'd eat it.I think you have to try everything in life so that in old age you don't regret not doing something. After all, you only live once.

3.I'm aware that worms have a lot of nutritional value . Eating insects is reportedly very healthy. Some insects are not only a source of protein, but also vitamins and iron. And to be honest, I don't know if I would add worms to my daily diet. I think it would depend on how it tastes, but I can't imagine it at the moment.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
