Week 6[19-25.11.18] Pharmaceutical companies: The other side of the coin

We all hear from news, social media how bad and inhumane the pharmaceutical companies are. From trials on people in China and animals, gossips of cure for cancer being hidden away from us, tells about the “it is better to make them cure for the long time rather than with two pills” and how it makes those corporations earn more and more on our suffering. Saying bad things about pharmaceutical companies seems to be a fashion for many years. Now, we see how dangerous it might have been with whole anti-vaccination movements. So lets take a look on the other side of the coin and see if “Big Pharma” might be doing something good for us all.

I am not the only one seeing how overly criticized the pharmaceutical industry is. John LeMattina has wrote for Forbes a fantastic article that I highly recommend to everyone. Did you know that the most generous companies in America are pharma companies? Probably not. Yet, they don’t stop on donations. Great example is an HPV vaccination program for cervical cancer in Rwanda. But how did the crowd reacted? Merck, the company responsible for this program was to be suspected of simply trying to make a new market for themselves and dominate Rwanda vaccination market. At the same time, Merck is one of partners in fight for eradicating river blindness in Africa. The WHO estimated that 40,000 cases are prevented because of that. Not in total but EACH YEAR. And this is just one of many companies trying to fight for better future of our species. And the doom of the worst of bacterias, parasites and viruses.

Lets look at other example. NTD. It is not any organization, nor company. It is an acronym for Neglected Tropical Diseases. One of them is dracunculiasis. All you need to do to get this little monster it to drink contaminated water. Some time later, you have a one meter long worm that needs to be removed from your leg. Horrible, isn’t it? In 1985 there were 3500000 cases of this dracunculiasis. In 2015? Only 22. And who defeated this tropical monster? You guessed it, pharmaceutical companies. Governments and health organizations couldn’t do it by themselves. The biggest health project in history of mankind to eradicate 20 of those NTD. In 2015 the drugs they gave FOR FREE provided treatments reached more people then the population of EU and USA combined.

Bad things were done and will be done by pharmaceutical companies. But the good deeds are done by them every year, even if they don’t get so much media attention as even they slightest mistake on their part.

1. Why do you think people hate pharmaceutical companies so much?
2. What is your opinion on such big scale health operations aiming to eradicate some of the worst diseases from our planet?
3. What is your personal opinion on pharmaceutical industry?

All this anti-vaccination movement is just to drag attention from some really important issues. Of course, it may sound like some conspiracy thing, but here s the catch: with all those anti-vaccination people some of the medieval diseases, which were marked as completely eradicated are coming back now! This is sure some long ball going on here. And a pharmaceutical companies are just tools for business. Yes, their deeds are huge, but nobody said that they should do this for free. And the ongoing damage, like people dying from cancer due to the delayed cure invention? Let's be honest, who cares? The only power is money, and the companies -- are the tools for making money. Africa is one huge golden mine with rare rhinos and elephants as well as many other treasures, thus, all those campaigns of eradicating deceases there are more dedicated to ease work there for companies rather than saving human lives. We got overpopulation, so this would be foolish to overengage into saving everyone. The huge mechanism of life should be balanced. If anti-vaccers want to die, let them. Just isolate them from others.

To be honest I was not prepared for such a dark comment and I have no idea what so say. Just... Wow. I don't think that big pharma is actually doing all that just for profit. What I mean is... They won't use Africa later for themself, they don't use rhinos or metals that are there.
Also what about this "delayed cure invention"? As I know many people in pharmaceutical companies I know that cure for any form of cancer is considered a holly grail and an golden egg. It gives fame and money, whoever is first to find it.

I think the reason is because Pharma companies has come to represent medicine at any cost for profit. This is perpetuated, from my perspective, mostly by people who are not in the medical field and do not have the background to understand the role of pharmaceuticals in medicine. They fail to understand that no medication is without risk, and that prescription always entails weighing risk against benefit. for example Martin Shkreli,Pharmaceuticals CEO who raised HIV drug price by 5,000% 'also hiked cost of pill taken by children with incurable kidney disease'.
In my opinion, eradicating some of the illnesses on a large scale is of great use. All humans around the world need to help each other to help and cure patients, pharmaceutical companies should spend part of their revenues on providing services to poorer countries, or part of their time for ongoing treatment and eradication Disease.
In my opinion, pharmaceutical companies are an integral part of human security. We all need medication to treat our illness, and pharmaceutical companies help health and longevity by researching diseases and providing therapeutic or medicinal methods.

1. In my opinion, people are skeptical about pharmaceutical companies because these companies earn when people are sick. Many companies offer very similar medicines and promise a quick recovery. The same is true of dietary supplements, which in most cases do not even absorb, but advertisements say that they should be eaten daily.
2. I believe that such initiatives are very necessary.
3. In my opinion, pharmaceutical companies should be more closely monitored by medical institutions. Each drug should be tested to detect side effects. I also think that advertising for drugs should explain their action more and not present drugs as magic pills that are a solution to any pain.

My guess is this: pharmacists create a large number of drugs, which are just a panacea but are very expensive. Doctors then prescribe these medications to patients, and if the disease is serious, then one panacea will not help. People die while spending big money on pills that do not help. But the corpse will not be able to sue.
I am glad that pharmaceutical companies are not indifferent to the fate of people who can not take care of their health to the best of their ability. Because as far as I understand, people in Africa suffer from such a terrible disease because they drink dirty water. But how many other microbes enter the body? why not finance an African water supply?
My positive, I have not come across medication other than flu. And of course, I am glad that I exist, vaccinations against various serious diseases that are made in childhood.

I think it is mostly caused by the fact that it is hugeeee market so most companies are not driven to help people but to make profit. It is similar with many todays doctors. They are mostly looking for constant, proper job but even more rarerly becouse they have need to help other people. So it is not strage that people have concerns about those companies when drugs for some leathal deseases costs more then casual man earns in his lifetime.

Many people hate pharmaceutical companies because of the fact that they make a lot of money. Pharmaceutical companies are being said to put profit over people. That they don't care about people but about how much money they get. But I don't get one thing - people hate pharmaceutical companies but they still take pills etc. when they're ill. Thanks to medical treatments many people are alive these days because we can prevent epidemics and diseases. In my opinion pharmaceutical industry does good work. Research costs and testing takes a lot of money and time so it's not easy to patent something. Personally I don't care about how much money somebody makes as long as good things come from it.

At the same time answering your first and third question I will not agree that people hate pharmaceutical companies so much. I believe that everyone works as much as he can to survive and he is doing his best. I am strange man because I count only money and I believe that he end justifies the means.

I do not know what to say to the second question because I have never been interested in this topic.

People hate pharmaceutical companies for a simple reason - oftentimes, they hold a monopoly on a live-saving medicine, which allows them to raise the prices to insane levels, effectively extorting people of their money. Either you pay the insane price, or you die. Not every company does this, but it is enough to make people cynical towards pharmaceutical companies.
Big scale operations like this are, of course, always a good thing. There's not much to be said here - almost everyone can agree that getting rid of diseases is a positive thing.
As for how I personally think about the pharmaceutical industry, I think that most of the industry is completely fine - many of the pharmaceutical companies are a huge help for many people, and the medicine they provide saves lives. However, certain companies abuse the fact that they have exclusive rights to a certain medicine to drive the prices up to insane levels even though the medicine is cheap to make.

Thanks for your insight and interesting examples and ideas. I should look more into them, I am pretty sure that pharmaceutical companies already do spend part of their revenues on services for poorer countries.

It is hard to trust somebody who earn when you are in pain. I agree with that. And the supplements are the worst kind of joke we could imagine.
And I know that those companies are actually very closely monitored. I know people who work in them. There is so many steps when testing new drugs that it is hard to count them all.
Unknown said…
To be honest it is hard for me to agree with you. The pharmacists compete with each other to create best drugs possible. The one witch works the best wins market. Also, the family of such person can sue the company if the drug was faulty. The doctor won't prescribe something that have no chance to help. Medicine don't work always, but now, when we are using them, we tend to live 70 at average, not 34.

I know many young doctors and medicine students. And I can tell you, that especially in Poland, none of them have choose this path because of money. They spend 6 years, just to be able to choose specialization, earning shity money. They do it to help people.
Unknown said…
Thank you! You sir, have given very rational answer. I agree with you in 100%.
Unknown said…
As I see and talk with people, most of them tend to hate pharmaceutical companies for some kind of reason.
Unknown said…
Thank you for this answer. I agree with you, there are always some bad guys in the group, but we shouldn't make our mind looking only on what they do.

Perhaps there is some truth in the conspiracy theories of pharmaceutical companies. The fact that many of them themselves generate various kinds of diseases, so that the number of consumers grows every year. Pharmaceutical business is a well-established business mechanism of global scale, of which we can be sure. But do not forget that among the multitude of diseases there are those that are treated solely through pharmaceutical preparations. Therefore, in conversations about the benefits of pharmaceutical companies, I think there will always be two camps that will never come to a common opinion.
Thank you for the article. In my opinion, many people hate pharmaceutical companies for making money on our health. Perhaps this is a cliche. But nevertheless, it is impossible to deny that very often for the profit is more important than the health of the buyer. They can reissue a drug with a bad reputation under a different name many times, only for profit. But if you remove all the excess, the company wants to make money, which means that it wants people to get sick and buy their medicines, and it’s quite logical that people don't like those who want them to get sick.
Of course, this is primitive logic. It is impossible to deny that there are many scientists who are desperately want to fight with diseases. Such talented people should be encouraged in every possible way because they save our lives.
I do not have a specific opinion about pharmaceutical companies. I prefer not to think about them.

Why do you think people hate pharmaceutical companies so much?

Well their whole business model relies on us getting sick/ bad stuff happening to us, u never see a sick person go "yay im gonna see a doctor and then take more pills"

When it comes to any big scale efforts in eradication of diseases, people are always skeptical since on business will kill itself on their own, u wont see an anti cold pharma researching cure for cold would u ?

My personal opinion is "Cure those diseases which lead to deaths and make sick's people lives miserable, make money and never attempt curing on those annoying ones but non lethal"
It is said that pharmaceutical companies are no longer all about health, but all about money. This narration is pretty common and it can explain the hate.
I was amazed when I heard about this operation. Faith in humanity restored!
I belive that pharmaceutical industry helps us a lot by making medicines and stuff like that (of course!). And it's really hard for me to complain about the industry when I dont have any idea about it.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
